How To Heat Treat A Knife | The 4 Steps You NEED To Know

12:13
Knife Making - How To Heat Treat A Knife | Super Simple DIY heat treating. The 4 steps you NEED to know. More info below⬇️ Beginner knife making steel video. What steel I recommend⬇️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGml3gjDhek Heat treating simplified! In this video I show you how to heat treat a knife the easy way. I give you 4 steps to heat treating, which include : Normalizing, heating, quenching and tempering your diy knife. Heat treating is an exact science. However you can heat treat simple carbon steels using relatively crude methods. Simple carbon for knife making can include 1050,1060,1075,1080,1084,1095,5160 and others. However each of these particular steels have their own variations in both normalizing, quencing, and tempering temperatures. Some of these steels require soaking time at the austenitize temperature in order for the carbon to "diffuse" through the iron. This is why I wouldn't recommend 1095 or o1 as a beginner knife making steel. As soaking time at temperature is required in order for the carbon to get fully into solution before quenching. Yes, you can use these steels (1095, O1 ect.) and get a hardened blade using a forge, if you know what your doing, or get lucky. But, realize that you will most likely will get better results using a simpler steel like 1080 or 1084 that doesn't require a soaking at temperature. A 1080 steel blade will most likely Harden all the way through using crude methods where 1095 or O1 may not. Remember this is an exact science. If you have any more questions about temperatures for a particular steel please google "Time temperature transformation graph" for the particular steel you plan on using. Stay away from forums for info on heat treating. There is helpful info on forums if you already know how to sift through the mess of bad info. Quenching in motor oil, mixed with ice, heated to 180F, under a pale moon light, or any other home recipe, is generally a bad idea, and wont give you the full benefits of your particular steel. Steel manufactures spend literally hundreds of millions of dollars finding out EXACTLY what works on their particular steel, with their particular ingredients. Always refer to their info for questions regarding temperature and quench. This video is for the back yard knife maker looking to simply heat treat their knife using crude methods. Realize I can't go into every aspect of every steel in a single youtube video. AGAIN😉, this is a simple video explaining how to Harden/ heat treat a simple knife. If you have any questions please ask! However, If you have different "opinions" thats fine too, but I will most likely refer you to Time temperature graphs from the a steel manufactures website. And their recommendations for their steel. Hopefully this helps! Thank you for watching and hope you have a great day! HOW TO MAKE A KNIFE SHARPENING STROP FROM AN OLD BELT

05:31
How to make a knife sharpening strop out of stuff bought from Home Depot. Extremely easy! For around $10 you can buy stuff to make a knife sharpening strop. This works just as well as a strop bought from a manufacturer. You can choose what stropping compound to use as well. Keep in mind it take several uses for the excess compound to wear off. KNIFE SHARPENING TIPS BEGINNERS MUST KNOW 2 | HOW TO MAINTAIN AN ANGLE

This is my exact freehand knife sharpening method I use when I'm not filming. Note: In some of my older videos you may see me using a little bit different technique. Thats due to me filming, and trying not to block the camera. Separating the knife sharpening movements, and using two different joints, or muscle groups to help maintain the blade angle goes a long way. Some of these things I talk about in this video may seem simple and insignificant, however I believe they are extremely important in getting that hair whittling knife edge. RESTORING AND SHARPENING A RUSTY KNIFE FROM EBAY.

04:43
This knife was bought on ebay for $8 including shipping. So I decided to try a knife restoration. It had a huge bow in the cutting edge, some pitting in the blade, the handle was loose and cracking, there were no markings on this knife, and Im pretty sure it was hand made. The wood I used for the handle is local hickory. I realize its not stabilized, and might crack later down the road. I used cutting board oil for the handle. I don't know if it will work well, or cause problems, however, thats what I had on hand. I also wanted a food safe finish for this knife. This is my first knife restoration. Im definitely not a knife maker, but his was fun! Including filming and editing, this video took three 8 hour days to make. I sanded the knife handle to 1500 grit. I sanded blade to 600 grit. A lot of the knife restoration work was done with a regular belt sander. I also used a rasp to help shape the hard to reach areas. There was a lot of hand sanding involved! I feel like this knife restoration could be done by just about anybody. Its not hard. Just take your time and go slow. How I flatten my knife sharpening stones | Knife sharpening tips 4

05:04
How I flatten my whetstones. Its super important for some knife grinds to have flat stones. Although its not absolutely necessary and shouldn't be obsessed over, unless you want to. My method seems to be different then everyone else. I always seem like I'm wasting the sharpening stone by flattening to early. These Norton sharpening stones are expensive. I feel like I get more out of the stone if I work the knife on the high parts. I dunno. Some knife do absolutely require a flat stone such as scandi grinds and chisel grind knives. This is just how I do it, I've tried a lot of different ways, and I find this to be the easiest and cheapest. Your milage may vary. WEIRD KNIFE SHARPENING METHOD. Can you sharpen a knife on a file?

06:20
Can a file be used for knife sharpening? I have used files for axes for a long time but never thought about using them for knife sharpening. I got very interesting results on this one. Im not sure if these weird knife sharpening videos have any real merit but, maybe we will find something totally obscure that works really well! I do have some ideas I'd like to try that could work REALLY well. And maybe even provide an alternative to actual sharpening stones. 😀 The knife in the video is a spyderco pacific salt. I'm not sure if spyderco still makes this particular knife as I couldn't find anything available online. Spyderco does make the salt series of knives, which are similar in design and construction. TESTING A $12 KNIFE SHARPENING STONE FROM AMAZON. Knife sharpening doesn't have to be expensive.

08:43
What is the best beginning knife sharpening stone to buy? There are a lot of questions you need to ask yourself when looking at sharpening stones. In this video I go over some of those question and some things to consider when looking at sharpening supplies. I also test a $12 sharpening stone bought from amazon. This would make a good stone for a beginner looking to practice the basics of knife sharpening. I wouldn't recommend going out and buying a lot of expensive sharpening supplies, as you may end up deciding its not for you. Cheap sharpening gear is a much better place to start as you will not wast any money even if you decide to later on buy the more expensive whetstones. I would recommend a sharpening stone with dual grits like this combination stone. It will give you more options at almost no additional cost. I also ALWAYS recommend a strop. You can either buy one like the Knives Plus Strop Block, or DIY a strop from an old leather belt. Knife sharpening doesn't have to be expensive. 😀 The knife used in this video is a spyderco sage 1 in s30v steel I bought everything in this video with my own money and make no money if you purchase any of these knife sharpening items. I am not an "expert" and this is just my opinion. Your milage may vary. Music from epidemic sound

How to sharpen a chisel on sandpaper to hair whittling sharp.

10:57
Every time I've needed to sharpen my chisels I've never had my whetstones near. You can improvise, and get razor sharp chisels without the expensive stones. Every carpenter carries sand paper and the only thing you would need to add to your kit is buffing compound. Everything else can be improvised in the field. Keeping your woodworking chisels sharp is much easier then sharpening them from scratch. Maintaining chisel sharpness can be done on a simple wooden strop. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU TRY TO SHARPEN A KNIFE ON A COFFEE CUP?

06:15
I get this question a lot, "Can you just use a coffee cup to sharpen a knife?" I had tried to sharpen my knife on a coffee cup years ago and failed. After years of practice will I finally be able to sharpen on a coffee cup?? I definitely would not recommend this method for sharpening. Try this at your own risk. Its very easy to slip off the cup while sharpening and damage your knife. I would recommend REAL sharpening stones. The sharpening stones I use most are the edge pro stones, and Norton stones. Other sharpening stones id recommend are king stones. The knife used in this video is the spyderco pacific salt...spyderco may have stopped making this knife as I can't find it anywhere. They do make a smaller version though. If your into backpacking, hiking, knives, knife sharpening, bushcraft, and other outdoors related videos please subscribe! Thanks for watching!! Knife Making - How To Make A Belt Knife From An Old Broken File.

06:40
Knife making, how to make a knife from an old broken file. This is just me making a knife from a broken file. I first annealed the file so it could be drilled and worked easier. Then I shaped the knife out of the file and hardened the knife in canola oil. The knife was tempered at 400 degrees for 2 one hour cycles. I sharpened the blade to 8000 grit then buffed out the flats with white buffing compound. The belts im using are surface conditioning belts and are great for knife making. I was going for a rough polished look with this. The sheath was made from kydex. And has para-cord belt loops. Its pretty tough getting in and out but I think thats a good thing. BUSHCRAFT AXE FROM AN OLD CARPENTERS HAMMER

If your looking for a budget bushcraft axe option don't be intimidated by diy. Its very easy especially if you buy a handle. These old axes have great steel and hold an edge a LONG time. Not to mention you will have pride in your work! Making a mini bushcraft axe from an old carpenters hammer. Hand making the axe handle from hickory. And finally sharpening. Hand making an axe takes a lot of work. The sharpening was done on Norton sharpening stones. Polishing was done on the bench buffer. Don't be intimidated by a project like this. Hand making a handle is not necessary. Any hatchet handle bought from a hardware store or home depot will work just fine. Surface conditioning belts for knife making. These things are awesome! These came from Empire abrasives Heres what the say about them⬇️ Description: 4 inch x 36 inch Surface Conditioning Sanding Belts for back-stand belt sanders, portable belt sanders, or knife belt sanders are made with flexible non-woven, nylon mesh fibers, impregnated with abrasive grains. These non woven belts are the perfect option for cleaning, deburring, finishing or blending when minimal stock removal is required and the integrity of the work pieces is a high priority. These surface conditioning belts are particularly effective at corrosion removal, finishing stainless steel as well as creating a straight line brushed finish on a variety of metals and alloys. Spyderco Endura 4 zdp-189 review

LINK FOR THIS KNIFE⬇️ This is a review of the spyderco endura 4 with zdp-189 steel. Its a great knife with a couple problems. Been using the endura 4 over the last 6 weeks and I have to say despite its problems its becoming one of my favorite knives. The spyderco endura 4 is thin lightweight and strong. It also has the ability to move the pocket clip on any corner something I always look for in a knife. How this review helps. I've Discovered Something Strange. This Video WILL Be Controversial | Knife Edge Retention Testing

10:08
S30v vs 8cr13mov vs 1080 edge retention testing. So this is strange, s30v should WAY out perform 8cr13mov in edge retention. There is no funny business and I don't have an agenda. I just don't see that much difference between these 3 steels. I assure you there is nothing wrong with my spyderco sage 1. Ive tested it against other knives in other steels and it everything is very close. If your paying 3-4 times as much for a particular steel, especially one that is hyped to be SO much better shouldn't you see that during testing? Maybe I didn't cut enough? But heres the thing, By the time I was done testing neither knife was sharp and needed to be resharpened. The sage 1 (s30v) was, by most standards dull. So, both knives were dull....shouldnt there be a significant difference? I honestly don't know how anyone could tell a difference between these knives. Now, I have seen terrible edge retention with other knives in 8cr13mov. Practically dulling after the first cut. But it seems with proper heat treating these so called "cheap steels" can hold their own. Knife manufactures can leave their steel as hard or as soft as they see fit. If they are manufacturing a knife with a very low price point, it might be in their best interest to leave that particular steel softer, in case it was to be used as a pry bar (a softer tempered steel is stronger and less prone to shattering if broken). This is just a though. Expensive knives are less likely to be used as prying tools and maybe they leave that steel slightly harder in that application. Again, just a though. Just to be clear, this test was done over the course of 3 days. And I cut a lot more cardboard, carpet, and rope, then what was shown. Realize I have to edit this video down into about 10 minutes. Maybe next test will be a full un-cut test thats last 5 hours. 😩😉 This video will be controversial, please keep it civil Thanks! WHAT IS SCARY SHARP?? AXE EDITION | How sharp can you get an axe freehand sharpening?

What is scary sharp? Knife or axe sharpness is relative to what your cutting. if your knife or axe cuts what you need it to, its sharp. Sorry guys I had to make this video to compliment the "what is scary sharp" knife video😉 This axe was sharpened on Norton water stones. The stones used were 220/1000 and a 4000/8000. It was then stropped on a diy strop.
