Packing Light: How to Pack for Two Months in a Carry-On (CC)

03:09
Here's how to pack for two months abroad, without getting bored with your clothes! Twelve items become 40 outfits and fit nicely in a carry-on suitcase. (Closed Captioned) Specifically, I'm bringing: 2x shorts 2x dresses 1 skirt 2x tank tops 4x shirts 1 cardigan Everything mixes and matches. Here's how it all works... === The Backdrop: We spent May-July in China (eight weeks in total). For the first month, I co-led a study abroad trip that brought sixteen college students to the Nanjing University of Science and Technology to study beginning Chinese. I also co-taught a Travel Writing class. As part of that trip, we went to Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Yellow Mountain, and Slender West Lake. Once the students left for home, my husband Jesse and I traveled around China for a few more weeks. Our travels brought us to Xi'An, Chengdu, Leshan, Jiuzhaigou, Yangshuo, and Hong Kong. It was a life-changing adventure! === Connect with me! Twitter: https://twitter.com/Erin_Travels Blog: http://erinstravels.com Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/erin_travels

What We Eat at Home in Mexico

07:37
Here in Mexico, we do enjoy going out to eat (the food is so good! and so affordable!) but we don't always eat out at restaurants. We eat plenty of food here at home, and since that doesn't often make it to the vlogs, I thought I'd compile about a week's worth of meals and show them here. πŸ‘‹πŸΌ About me: Hi, I’m Erin! I live with my husband Jesse and our three-year-old daughter Harper in Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico. In the summer of 2018, we sold our stuff, packed our bags, and booked a one-way ticket to Mexico in search of a new life. What's the Best Travel Rewards Credit Card? Chase Sapphire vs. Barclaycard Arrival Plus

05:24
Last year, I spent a lot of time researching travel rewards credit cards. Two cards kept popping up in my results: the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Barclaycard Arrival Plus. Both cards came with attractive features and big sign-up bonuses, but there was one catchβ€”both had annual fees. The first year, however, was free, so I decided to do a little experiment. I signed up for both of the credit cards, used them throughout the year, and redeemed my points for free travelβ€”all to decide which card I would keep in the following year. My decision? Surprisingly easy. One of these cards came out way ahead of the other. All in all, I got a lot of free travel out of this experiment. Between the two cards, I redeemed more than $1,600 worth of completely FREE travel, which helped pay for part of my travels in China and in Maine. Disclaimer: I’m no financial analyst, but I know it’s a bad idea to open and close a bunch of lines of credit. We made the decision to open these accounts and close one after careful consideration of our specific financial and credit situation. This video isn’t intended to be financial advice of any sortβ€”I’m just sharing what I think about both of these cards after using them for a year. ==== LINKS: Chase Sapphire Preferred: https://creditcards.chase.com/sapphire Barclaycard Arrival Plus: https://www.barclaycardus.com/ ==== CONNECT: TWITTER: https://twitter.com/Erin_Travels BLOG: http://erinstravels.com PINTEREST: http://www.pinterest.com/erin_travels ==== CREDITS: Music: "Honey Bee" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

All Good Things Must Come to an End: Our last weekend in GTO with Greg (karaoke!)

09:39
It's Greg's last weekend in Guanajuato, so after a bit of house hunting with Nallely in the morning, Harper and I met up with Greg for some exploring in La Presa (and lunch!). We ate at La Victoriana, saw the lake and the dam, and then cafe hopped until Jesse was finished with work. We met up with him and went to Amatxi for an epic fancy dinner. After that we got a wild idea to do karaoke, so off we went, meeting up with a new friend from Canada and our Mexican artist friend Gaby along the way. It's days like these that I can't believe my luck in living here. πŸ‘‹πŸΌ About me: Hi, I’m Erin! I live with my husband Jesse and our three-year-old daughter Harper in Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico. Eating Tortas at the Artisan Market in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

04:09
The food in Mexico is absolutely glorious! Harper, Jesse, and I spend the afternoon at the Mercado de Artesanias in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where we are living as a digital nomad family. We eat the most glorious tortas: torta milanesa de pollo for me and torta Cubana for him. (Harper had two bites of quesdilla, not pictured.) We love browsing the market, with its trinkets and handicrafts, its fresh produce, and delicious food. Happy day! Is Mexico Dangerous? Our Day in Leon (Aquarium + Mall + Cathedral)

11:35
When we told family and friends we were moving to Mexico, the one question most people asked was....is it safe to live in Mexico? (What about the cartel?) When a lot of people in the US think of Mexico, they think of drug cartels and illegal immigration. But on a day trip to Leon, what I thought over and over was: I wish everyone in the States could see this Mexico. Maybe it would change the way we talk about our southern neighbors and their home... πŸ‘‹πŸΌ About me: Hi, I’m Erin! Travel Tips: Which packing method REALLY packs the most clothes? (CC)

04:41
Which packing method packs the most clothes in the least amount of space? Traditional folding, rolling, fancy folding, or space-saving bags? Over the years, I've done them all, but I've never actually taken the time to test the strategies in any real way. (Frankly, I've never wanted to pack the same bag twice!) So, in this video I try them all: the same amount of clothes, a toiletries bag, and a curling iron--the same bag--four different packing methods. And honestly, I was surprised by the results! Packing Light: How to Pack a Carry-On for One Week (CC)

03:33
This summer, a couple weeks after my return from China, I was off to Boston and Maine for a weeklong visit. I wanted to keep things light, so everything I brought fit into one small carry-on and one purse. Tips: 1. Take a bag that's under your airline's maximum allowed size--if you're not traveling long-term, you don't need all that space. 2. Plan your outfits ahead of time. Don't take what you don't need. 3. Packing cubes help you stay organized on the road. 4. When packing accessories, make sure they mix-and-match with most of the outfits you're packing--that way, you can take fewer items and still look cute for your vacation photos. Orlando Travel Guide: Beyond Disney World

03:26
Disney World may be the happiest place on earth, but Orlando, Florida, has a lot more to offer than just theme parks. If you want to get off the tourist track a bit, here are five sights you don't want to miss. 5. Lake Eola. This beautiful park is right in the heart of downtown, and it's the perfect place for a stroll or a paddleboat ride. 4. Mall at Millennia. Upscale shopping in the city's prettiest mall--spend a fortune or just enjoy the window shopping. 3. Canaveral National Seashore. An easy day trip from Orlando, this park is home to pristine beaches (the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the state of Florida), wildlife, nature trails, and lagoons. You can even glimpse space-related sights, including the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building). Note: the very northernmost beach is a nude beach, so families--consider yourself warned! 2. Leu Gardens. A natural oasis in the city, this gardens is beautiful year-round. 1. Winter Park. This upscale neighborhood is a must-see for any Orlando visitor. Shop along Park Avenue, take a scenic boat tour along the lakes and canals, and eat some of the best food in the city.

Packing Cube Review: Eagle Creek Pack-It Clean Dry Cube and Specter Set

05:32
Last year, a friend introduced me to something that has absolutely revolutionized the way I pack: the glorious packing cubes. Why did it take me so long to discover these wonderful things? Never mindβ€”the point is, I’m a changed woman. Now, I never pack without them. Not only do they help you pack more clothes in less space, but they keep your suitcase neat and organized, which makes travel that much easier and less stressful. I have two types of packing cubes, both by Eagle Creek. I have a standard-size Pack-It Clean Dirty Cube (also known as the 2 Sided Cube, or the double sided cube) and a Pack-It Specter Set. Between these four cubes, Jesse and I can usually pack all the clothes we need for just about any length of trip. (Click here to see the outfits I took for two months in China--all of the main pieces fit into one double-sided cube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idBP6T11YhU) The Clean Dirty Cube (10” x 13.5”) is double sided, with one side lined in a breathable mesh, and the other side lined with a clear nylon that’s supposed to be waterproof and odor-proof (I’ve not tested either). This one is perfect for keeping things organized. I like to pack tops in one side and pants/skirts in the otherβ€”which makes managing my clothes while traveling a breeze. The one downside is that this cube is structured and can be a little bulky. Because it keeps its shape, it's a breeze to use on the road and almost acts like a little drawer for your clothes. But if space is at a premium, the Specter Set can't be beat... The Specter Set comes in three sizes: large (10” x 14”), medium (10” x 7”), and small (8” x 4”). Extremely lightweight, this set is great for maximizing space without adding bulk to your luggage. I’m always surprised at how much these cubes will pack! If it’s organization you’re most concerned about, the double-sided cube is your best friend. If it’s space and weight, the Specter Set is the way to go. === LINKS Clean Dirty Cube: http://www.amazon.com/Eagle-Creek-Travel-Pack--Clean/dp/B00F9S8FZA/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1424880724&sr=8-1-fkmr2&keywords=eagle+creek+clean+dry+cube Specter Set: http://www.amazon.com/Eagle-Creek-Travel-Pack--Specter/dp/B007NZVY32/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1424880986&sr=8-5&keywords=eagle+creek+packing+cube === CONNECT TWITTER: https://twitter.com/Erin_Travels BLOG: http://erinstravels.com PINTEREST: http://www.pinterest.com/erin_travels

And we randomly ran into a bunch of booksellers. I'm amazed. Is this what it feels like to fall in love with a city? A window into life in Guanajuato: there's always a festival happening. There's always something to celebrate. Cost of Living in Mexico: Grocery Shopping + Prices (Digital Nomad Family in San Miguel de Allende)

11:33
We show you what a "get what you want" grocery shopping trip looks like--including prices. This isn't the cheapest grocery store, nor do we get the cheapest stuff. Later we'll make a video about how to shop when you're on a tight budget. But for now, here are some prices on a range of items, from flour to pasta to papaya. Our cost of living in Mexico is a fraction of what it was back in the States--and our quality of life is so much better here. WHERE WE ATE: El Rinconcito Salida a Celaya 57 ABOUT US: We are a digital nomad family, traveling with our three-year-old daughter. We are currently living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Why the US Should Build the Wall, an Expat's Perspective: Reading Negative Comments about Mexico

09:06
Late last year, I filmed a video warning my viewers of some of the dangers of visiting or moving to Mexico--the things most people don't want to tell you about. In the comments section of that video, I was kindly reminded that I forgot some things on my list! So in this video, I let those commenters warn you about Mexico in their own words... and I think by the end of the video, you'll understand why I think maybe the wall isn't such a bad idea after all. (Real talk at the end of the video: no trolls allowed.) πŸ‘‹πŸΌ About me: Hi, I’m Erin! I live with my husband Jesse and our three-year-old daughter Harper in Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico. Hipster Mexico: Living in San Miguel de Allende with Kids

San Miguel de Allende Part 2: Seeing Old Friends and Remembering Our Life Here...

10:43
Our last day in San Miguel de Allende started off with breakfast at our "regular" spot when we lived here--El Riconcito's. We used to love coming here. The owner is Manuel, who used to live in Charlotte, where we'd just moved from last summer, and he always went out of his way to make us feel welcome and at home. If you're looking for an authentic experience and good Mexican food, you've got to come here. (We were usually the only gringos in the place--which is saying a lot for SMA!) Making Friends After Moving Abroad: Or, How Moving to Mexico Changed How I Saw Myself

Beautiful Merida: Harper and I Visit the City We Almost Moved to...

Before we decided to head to San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, Jesse and I thought we'd move to Merida. The city has a good-sized expat population and people love it there. Are Gringo Prices Fair?

09:10
Everybody who moves to Mexico hears about it eventually: gringo prices. As a foreigner, you're likely to be overcharged for things... and people have a lot of tips and tricks for avoiding this "gringo tax." But how unfair is it, really? Note: In this video, I use the term "expat" and let me quickly clarify why. We could do a whole video about the terms expat and immigrant, and we should do that so we can have that conversation. Basically, an immigrant is someone who moves permanently to another country, and an expat is someone who is β€œcurrently” living in another country, but there’s less of a permanent element to it. There is a racial component of these terms, and because I’m white I am far less likely to be called an immigrant than a non-white Mexican who moves to the United States, even if our situations were identical. Again, that’s not what this video is about, but I needed to clarify that the reason I’m calling myself an expat is because that is the term that best fits my situation at the momentβ€”however, I’m not unaware that there is a racial component to these terms, and that’s a conversation we need to have in another video. ALSO, this is not a response video or a call-out video. This isn't about any specific YouTubers or videos--it's a commentary about general trends I've noticed and questions I have. πŸ‘‹πŸΌ About me: Hi, I’m Erin! I live with my husband Jesse and our three-year-old daughter Harper in Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico. San Miguel de Allende: Library, Art, and the Tuesday Market (Family Vlog in Mexico )

12:45
In SMA, there's something new and beautiful to see every day! We spend some time in the public library (I've never been in such a pretty library, with such a gorgeous cafe!), and then we head to an artisan fair at the Instituto Allende. On Tuesday, it's time for El Tianguis de los Martes, the Tuesday Market. You can find just about anything at this market--from furniture and clothes to horseback riding supplies to tools to tables and tables full of the most amazing produce. And, of course, the FOOOOOOOD. ABOUT US: We are a gringo digital nomad family currently living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. We have a three-year-old daughter, and we're absolutely smitten with Mexico. Are Gringos Ruining Mexico? (Let's talk about gentrification + San Miguel de Allende)

13:43
San Miguel de Allende has a sizable expat* population and a lot of people wonder--is the influx of foreigners wiping out the Mexican-ness of the city? Are gringos taking over? Is San Miguel still "real Mexico"? I'm worried about the effects of foreigners in Mexico--but I'm not worried about some of the things I hear complained about most. What I am worried about it gentrification. I'm worried about our presence causing prices to rise to the point where locals can't afford their own city anymore. This seems to have already happened in San Miguel...and I'm very concerned about it happening in Guanajuato too. * Note about my use of the word "expat." An expat is someone who currently resides in a country other than their country of birth. An immigrant is someone who makes a permanent move to another country. I use expat to describe myself because it fits my situation best; however, there is a racial component to these words, and because I am white, I'm more likely to be called "expat" by other people than "immigrant." A non-white Mexican person living in the United States in my exact circumstance is more likely to be called an "immigrant." Let's keep talking about why that is. My video about gringo prices: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxU3K6ACvk0 Articles I mentioned: Gentrification in Mexico City ("Looking for a Miracle in Mexico City") https://bit.ly/2FiwSA7 "This Land is Their Land" by Barbara Ehrenreich: https://www.thenation.com/article/land-their-land/ πŸ‘‹πŸΌ About me: Hi, I’m Erin!
