Watch more How to Work in Public Relations videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/508036-How-to-Ace-a-PR-Job-Interview-Public-Relations Here are my top interviewing tips for gaining a job in the field of public relations. First impressions are important, and in PR you need to dress the part. Wear something fashionable, on-trend, chic and not too corporate, unless you're applying for a corporate PR position. But if you're applying for anything in entertainment, fashion and brands, it's important again to dress on-trend. The next thing is being prepared. Come to the interview with writing samples, a clip book of press that you've pitched and placed. Now, I know if this is an entry level position, you may not have these things yet. But the fact that you know about them and that they exist and that you know that that's what you're going to be doing once you gain that job in PR, be prepared. So, have a sample of the way that you write. Give an example of what a prospective client would be for you and the sections and the placements you would like to get for them. If you came in to an interview with me, and let's say you didn't have any experience but you knew that field of PR, and you said, "If this was my client, this would be the pitch that I would pitch for them, and this is the sections in the magazine that I would get them in," and give me an example in that interview I'd be sold. And no one has done it to me yet. Like I said, your Rolodex is everything. So, you're going to be asked in an interview, "Who are your contacts? Who are your media relationships? What celebrity publicists or celebrity managers do you have relationships with?" Come in with three to five strong contacts that you can say, "These people will help me in the position at your company," because again, it's about who you know. Also, be prepared to have a list of magazines, blogs, and newspapers that you read on a daily basis. Being that our job is to get our clients in the news, you need to know the news. So during the interview, I want you to tell your future employer, blogs, magazines and newspapers that you read on a daily basis and that you're up to date on what's current.

Watch more How to Work in Public Relations videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/508055-Where-to-Pitch-Clients-Public-Relations So, a publicist's job is to pitch. And I find myself, I'm always pitching. No matter where I am, I'm always looking for opportunities of what would be a great place to have my client. You know, the world is... like there's so many places. You can get creative. And so, your mind needs to always be thinking on how to get your client placed somewhere. So, I'm always pitching. A publicist is always on. And so, you're always thinking, even if you're like out in night club and you're on. Like, you're networking. You're meeting people that can help you in your career or help your clients that you're representing. So, you're always pitching and you need to know every section of every magazine. I never read magazines the same any more because when I read a magazine, I'm looking at where I can pitch my client, where I can get them placed. Even when I go out to dinner, I represent the tequila brand, the manager of the restaurant comes and sits at our table and start asking him about his tequila. And he doesn't carry the brand of tequila that I rep, so all of the sudden, I find myself going into a pitch on why he needs to carry that tequila brand. And then I set up a tasting in the restaurant with the founders of the tequila the next day and they carry the brand. I mean, where to pitch... You can pitch everywhere. You, as a publicist, just need to have an innovative mind to always see opportunities that present themselves.

Watch more How to Work in Public Relations videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/508070-How-to-Work-in-PR-with-Kelly-Brady-Public-Relations Hi. My name is Kelly Brady and I've been working in the field of PR for almost ten years now. I am originally from San Diego. I moved to New York about 11 years ago. I started as an intern at Lizzie Grubman Public Relations. Lizzie was approached to do a TV show on MTV, so it was a show about her and her four PR girls that worked for her. So I was one of those girls. When this show was on their air, it was when the first season of The Apprentice was on and we followed Newlyweds. It was a long time ago, and it was way before its time. But it was a great way to get my feet wet in the field of PR. About two and a half years ago, or going on three, I decided to start my own PR firm with my good friend Matt Levine. We created Brandsway Creative. It's been a whirlwind. I can't even believe it's almost been three years. We represent people, places, and products. We have a very large talent division where we represent music artists, DJs, super models, actresses, actors, to personalities like fashion stylists and astrologists. We also have brands. We've got a health and beauty section where we represent this new fitness club called Chase 23. We've got the PR Michelle Salon. We've got a new fitness brand clothing. Then we get into hospitality where I represent The Stand, which is a new comedy club and restaurant. We've got the Hanky Panky club in Webster Hall. We've got Lucky Strike bowling alley. We've got Petaluma restaurant on the Upper East Side. I'm very proud of what I've created in the past three years. If you want to check out our website go to www.brandswaycreative.com, or follow us on Twitter at brandswaycreative, and you can also follow me at kellyjbrady.

Be as creative as possible: At Thames21, we created a 'flash mob the foreshore' event to great effect -- it proves you can create great impact if you spend a bit of time stretching yourself and playing with some creative ideas (which often don't cost an awful lot to create). Don't forget the power of Real-Time reaction. Oreo cookies Superbowl (or Oreo/Kit Kat interaction) -- a focus for a lot of conversation during Advertising Week in New York last week. Be nimble and be imaginative -- this was a social campaign that cost zero ad dollars. The power of partnership: Combine forces with other organizations, groups and companies that can help increase your amplification. Create content that can be easily repurposed by others. Ask favors: ask other groups to re-tweet you or share your content, you'll be surprised that most people will when you just ask. Ensure that your social media strategy is connected to everything else: Whatever your overall marketing approach -- ensure that social is a key component within it, be it a new direct mail campaign/lead generation campaign/events strategy/general communications strategy -- find a way to socialize the campaign. Mobilize your internal staff -- everyone has the power to help amplify your message. At OpenX we develop social media suggestions and recommendations for the entire company whenever we have a new initiative. b) Can you share a relevant industry blunder- either by your team or yourself- & suggest learning tips to prevent next time? Whatever error, it usually comes down to one aspect: not listening to your audience As social media professionals -- there's an invisible or implicit contract between you and your audience -- you are agreeing to listen. Eurostar's crisis example from 2009 is a key illustration -- several hours before the brand responded by which time the story was that of the customers not the brand. Your content strategy should be native not interruptive. We as a community can sometimes fall into the trap of using social media as a pure broadcast tool, it's not! It's an opportunity to listen and better connect with your audience -- customers/prospects/supporters (or non-supporters!) Listen to your audience, and learn from them how to be better. c) What are some new digital tools you're engaging to tell your story (or that of your clients). What's working, what isn't? Infographics are one of the best tools for us given the space we're in. They can soften a complicated story (Samsung infographic to explain the mechanics of a private marketplace for mobile ad inventory utilizing RTB) reached over 800,000 people. They can help you demonstrate thought leadership -- our 2012 Advertising Week infographic gave us great visibility throughout the week and reached 2 million people. Sponsored Tweets. We were a beta testing partner with Twitter from 2011 with sponsored tweets. If you're smart about the application and want to guarantee your visibility using certain keywords (visibility to an audience using a conference hashtag for instance) this can be incredibly rewarding. Our Japanese language campaign saw engagements rates of up to 14%. Image/video platforms Pinterest, Instagram, Vine -- we're playing around with a lot of these with limited success. If you have the right content, use the right channel to find your audience, you'll succeed.
