Juxtapoz x Adobe Present: Jeremy Fish "Yesterdays and Tomorrows" (Part 1)
San Francisco artist Jeremy Fish has played a major role not only in Juxtapoz's growth over the last two decades, but also in the growing movement of artists who grew up in skateboarding and who have formed successful careers in exhibiting art. Not only that, but we consider Fish a friend. He's a two-time Juxtapoz cover artist, and we look forward to all his immersive paintings and explorations into narrative-based exhibitions. For the next month on Juxtapoz.com, we will be documenting the process of Jeremy Fish and his friends as he builds his animated experience through a collaborative process on Adobe Creative Cloud and reminisces on being a working artist these last 20 years. And as we will find out, Jeremy will learn a few new tricks along the way. This is part 1 in a six-part video-documentary series. For more information, visit http://j.mp/1yjMUP7

Art Truancy: Celebrating 20 Years of Juxtapoz Magazine Group exhibition 557C West 23rd Street & 529 West 20th Street May 15 thru June 14, 2014 Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Art Truancy, a group exhibition celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Juxtapoz Magazine. The exhibition will take place in both locations of Jonathan LeVine Gallery (557C W 23rd Street and 529 W 20th Street) in Chelsea, and will feature works by over forty artists. "Juxtapoz has played an instrumental role in the development of the genre of work our gallery exhibits, contextualizing it within the spectrum of Contemporary Art. It gave a voice to the artists involved early on and continues to build upon that foundation, integrating the talent of new generations. The collective rise in popularity of this entire community has since achieved a level that not only infiltrates the more established and insular art market but also far surpasses it in fan following and recognition. I'm very proud to present this exhibition which celebrates and highlights some of the key players who have contributed to these past 20 years of Juxtapoz, and what is certain to be a lasting legacy." — Jonathan LeVine "Juxtapoz Magazine and the Jonathan Levine Gallery were born only a year apart, on opposite coasts, sharing raucous roots and a mission to be the agents of art. It's only fitting that Juxtapoz partner with this gallery to showcase and celebrate two decades of the makers who continue to amaze." — Gwynn Vittello, Publisher "The great part about celebrating our 20th Anniversary is not only to see how far and widespread this art community has grown and accomplished in two decades, but also just how many great artists continue to emerge and strengthen the core. There is an energy here in emerging and outsider art: it's as strong as ever, both Juxtapoz and Jonathan LeVine continue to reinforce its importance in contemporary art." — Evan Pricco, Editor ABOUT JUXTAPOZ Since 1994, Juxtapoz has covered the ever-changing landscape of contemporary art, culture and design in the pages of their monthly magazine and website: Juxtapoz.com. Inspiring, subversive and original, Juxtapoz offers a vibrant editorial mix that connects with a global audience of creative professionals, students and art enthusiasts. Featured subjects have included painters, photographers, musicians, designers, curators and tastemakers who help define creativity. From international headliners like Shepard Fairey, Banksy and KAWS, to icons such as the Beastie Boys, Tom Waits and Jean Paul Gaultier, Juxtapoz champions originators. Telling the stories behind works of art, murals, products, books, museum and gallery exhibitions, Juxtapoz has documented the history of the underground and its rise to dominate the language of popular culture, while often returning underground to find new generations of influencers. Juxtapoz Presents: A Studio Visit with Deedee Cheriel
Ahead of her upcoming show at Merry Karnowski Gallery in Los Angeles this Saturday, we stopped by Deedee Cheriel's studio for a little visit! Deedee Cheriel transforms personal experience into folklore through an amalgam of influences both personal and universal. East Indian Art, spirituality, environmentalism, ritual, and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest all inform the artist's work and give context to often-personal narratives. Cheriel’s latest body of work, In Search For More Than Another Shiny Object, radiates a profound philosophical sense of self-awareness and hopefulness. The influence of music and song support themes of light, love and guardianship while the intimacy between Cheriel’s signature anthropomorphic characters engenders a sense of communal nurturing. The quest for more than a shiny object implies a much-needed social shift, and is a reflective of a personal and metaphorically balanced approach to life.

A Discussion about Figure Drawing with Fantasy Artist Jeff Miracola
In this video, I discuss how drawing the human figure from life has helped improve my drawing abilities, which I've applied to my career in the fantasy art field. I compare drawings I created in high school with more recent drawings so you can see the progress that I've made. My hope is that this is encouraging to aspiring artists who are struggling with their drawing abilities.

Juxtapoz x Adobe Present: The Making of... A Jeremy Fish Drawing
For the past few months, we have been following a special project between Adobe, Juxtapoz, and Jeremy Fish, in which Fish will be creating an animated mural that utilizes the new updates to Adobe Creative Cloud and the new creative hardware, Adobe Ink & Slide. Previously we had asked, "What if Fish took his 100 drawings—telling not only his history but also a special story about San Francisco—and created an animation that could be projected in a public space in the city for passersby to see as part of a moving-mural experience?" At the end of July 2014, Fish will be projecting the mural in the North Beach neighborhood, which he calls home. Using Adobe Illustrator CC, Photoshop CC, After Effects CC, and the collaboration features in Adobe Creative Cloud, Fish and his friends will work together to bring the mural to life. In this video we show Fish's work in the context of his day-to-day art-making process. He is an artist who works with pens and ink, meticulously crafting his narrative drawings and paintings, which begin on an 11" x 14" piece of paper. As part of this series, which shows Fish transforming his work into a projection and mural that we hope creates new opportunities to share his art, we wanted to showcase the core of Fish's studio practice: drawing. Here we capture the making of one of Fish's iconic 11" x 14" pieces, which will be part of his mural animation. This is part 3 in a six-part video-documentary series. Juxtapoz x Adobe Present: Jeremy Fish's "Yesterdays and Tomorrows" (Part 2)
In this video Fish talks about being primarily an artist who works with pens and brushes, and the opportunity to expand his palate by using Adobe's wide selection of software all now available to him in Creative Cloud, and the new Adobe Ink and Slide digital pen and ruler and drawing apps. Although Fish admits to being an erudite when it comes to creating art with a pen and paper, his new mural project will have him stepping out of his comfort zone and learning some new tricks. For the next month on Juxtapoz.com, we will be documenting the process of Jeremy Fish and his friends as he builds his animated experience through a collaborative process on Adobe Creative Cloud. Emil Alzamora - Sculpted Human
Emil Alzamora was born in Lima, Peru in 1975. His family moved to Boca Grande, Florida when he was two. He later attended Florida State University where he graduated Magna cum Laude in 1998 earning a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts. Alzamora harnesses a wide range of materials and techniques to deliver unexpected interpretations of the sculpted human figure. He often distorts, elongates, deconstructs, or encases his forms to reveal an emotional or physical situation, or to tell a story. Alzamora's keen interest in the physical properties of his materials combined with his hands-on approach allow for the process to reveal and inform at once the aesthetic and the conceptual. Alzamora started his sculpting career in the Hudson Valley of New York working with Polich Tallix in the fall of 1998. Since his departure from the art foundry in early 2001, he has produced his work full-time and shown regularly throughout the United States and Europe. Alzamora's works have been exhibited in multiple solo and group shows, many national and international art fairs as well as the United Nations Building, Pepsico World Headquarters, The Queens Museum of Art, The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, and The Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas. His work has been reviewed by publications such as The New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, The L Magazine, El Diario, Boston Metro News, Juxtapoz, High Fructose, ArteFuse and Cool Hunting. He currently lives and works in Beacon, NY. Music; Irezumi - Untitled 4

The Art of Shopping Small
On November 29, 2014, Small Business Saturday will be celebrating its fifth year, a campaign that not only honors the importance of small businesses around the US, but encourages people to “shop small” in support of neighborhood and independent retailers. In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday to galvanize small enterprises on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This weekend has grown into a movement, and more and more communities are getting involved, including the art community. As part of the ongoing SBS programming, artists have been asked to paint murals in specific small business neighborhoods.

Juxtapoz × Adobe Present: Jeremy Fish’s “Yesterdays and Tomorrows” Animation in Progress, Part 2
In our last video following the progress of Jeremy Fish’s animated mural for his exhibition “Yesterdays and Tomorrows,” we were introduced to filmmaker, artist, and technical guru Brady Baltezore. Baltezore has been taking Fish’s 100 drawings, all done on 11x14-inch paper, and transforming them into one continuous animation that will be projected on a wall in North Beach in San Francisco. Baltezore’s vast knowledge of Adobe products — including the latest updates to Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, and Illustrator available through Creative Cloud, as well as new Adobe Ink & Slide — has been vital to this animation process. Baltezore has been schooling Fish in what these new tools could do to transform Fish’s work into a moving picture. Fish has always been able to create signature characters — characters that have become familiar figures in the contemporary-art lexicon. But Baltezore has made the art move. One of the reasons this project has been important to Juxtapoz is how it aligns with our desire to bring art out of galleries and museums and directly to the people. We know art institutions are historically intimidating, and for the past 20 years, we have expressed our goal to make art a celebration without pretension. Murals and public art are a celebration of access and community, allowing people to interact with their neighborhoods in ways that go beyond dollars. As Baltezore noted during the process, Fish’s work will lend itself to a “striking and modern take on the mural.” Art for the people — in a brand new way. We are excited to see the next step. For the next month on Juxtapoz.com, we’ll be documenting the process of Fish and his friends as they build this animated experience through a collaboration on Adobe Creative Cloud. Stay tuned for more videos, and see Fish’s new show at FFDG in San Francisco on August 15, 2014. This is part 5 in a six-part video-documentary series. For more information, visit http://j.mp/1yjMUP7

Juxtapoz × Adobe Present: Jeremy Fish's Yesterdays and Tomorrows Animation in Progress
At some point in the process of making his mural animation, Jeremy Fish was going to have to go to summer school — the Brady Baltezore School — where he would learn about all the advantages of Adobe's latest updates to Creative Cloud. Let's back up a second and introduce Brady Baltezore. "Baltezore is a designer with a deep knowledge of the ins and outs of Adobe programs, but on this animation project, he's better known as Fish's technical guru." When we first kicked off this Juxtapoz × Adobe--produced series of videos to document the making of Fish's animated mural, this was the working concept: What if Fish took his 100 drawings — relating not only his history but also a special story about San Francisco — and created an animation that could be projected in a public space in the city for passersby to see as part of a moving-mural experience? It turns out Fish needed help; he needed Baltezore to show him how these drawings could be brought into Adobe Creative Cloud and then shared as a collaborative project using Adobe Illustrator CC, Photoshop CC, After Effects CC, and the new Ink & Slide. In this video we spend time at Baltezore's studio as he explains how he took a collection of Fish's 11×14-inch drawings and brought them into various Adobe programs to convert the works into one continuous animation. Baltezore gives step-by-step instructions on how he made these static images move. For the next month on Juxtapoz.com, we'll be documenting the process of Jeremy Fish and his friends as they build this animated experience through a collaborative process on Adobe Creative Cloud. Stay tuned for more videos, and see Fish's new show at FFDG in San Francisco on August 15, 2014. This is part 4 in a six-part video-documentary series. For more information, visit http://j.mp/1yjMUP7

When Clarkson graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art in 2002, he was resolute in his decision to make a living as a graphic artist in the music industry. He was hired as the head graphic designer for a prominent record label in Los Angeles shortly thereafter. Embracing a vibrantly hyper realistic digital photo-manipulation technique, his first published album cover followed shortly after joining their ranks and quickly established a long list of published album covers for several bands on various labels. In 2005 an opportunity presented itself that renewed Anthony’s creative juices and he found himself diving headlong into a new career as an active artist in the new contemporary movement. His ghostly surreal work has shown in several galleries throughout the States and abroad and continues to attract an ever-growing collector base in the process.

Daily warm up sketch/design routine. A single brush study after a beautiful drawing by James Jean that I like a lot. Tried to remember it the best I could, no reference has been used. Well I did not remember the image is actually flipped in the original Fables Cover, but that makes it a bit more unique... Well... ok: I got it wrong :D I give myself 1hr limit to come up with some character design, illustration or graphic design element. Music: Music: Buromaschinen: Alestes http://www.soundcloud.com/buromaschinen Opening and closing jingles: mashup including amazing spiderman on the gameboy, YMO key, papers please vocals, ketsui kizuna jigokutachi breakthru jingle. Wilie Cole at VOLTA NY 2014
This video is brought to you by www.GalleryLOG.com | Bespoke video content | Value and versatility Willie Cole (beta pictoris gallery, Birmingham, AL) — VOLTA NY 2014 March 6--9 Cole is a renowned "urban archaeologist", and his emotive upcycled assemblages (referencing both consumer culture and Dada readymades) and inventive printmaking (utilizing a steam iron) are subject of his two-year nationally touring career survey Complex Conversations: Willie Cole Sculptures and Wall Works. VOLTA NY 2014 | March 6--9, 2014 | www.ny.voltashow.com An invitational solo project fair for contemporary art. 82MERCER | New York, NY 10012 About VOLTA NY: With mutual acknowledged VIP access and shared shuttles with The Armory Show VOLTA NY is an invitational show of emerging solo artists' projects and the American incarnation of the successful young fair founded in Basel in 2005. VOLTA NY was conceived in 2008 by Artistic Director Amanda Coulson as a tightly-focused, boutique event that is a place for discovery, a showcase for relevant art contemporary positions regardless of the artist's or gallery's age. By refocusing the fair-going experience to solo-artist projects, VOLTA's New York edition promotes a deep exploration of the work of its invited participants and offers the opportunity for new discoveries. VOLTA showcases galleries — whether young or mature — that choose to work with the most exciting emerging artists. These galleries must maintain deeply meaningful connections with their artists and follow them throughout their careers. In turn, select galleries exhibit in the airy loft surroundings of VOLTA NY's SoHo venue, elevating their respective platforms for an experience mutually beneficial to fair visitors and the galleries alike. VOLTA NY is a platform for challenging, often complimentary -- and sometimes competing -- ideas about contemporary art. The strict solo format gives the New York fair its unique character, which curators and collectors often compare favorably to experiencing a series of intense studio visits.

Robert Williams Q+A
Robert Williams has enjoyed a diverse and profoundly influential career expressing a singular artistic vision. Emerging from the West Coast hot rod scene (where he produced graphics for Ed "Big Daddy" Roth), Williams produced some of the finest underground comix of his era in the pages of Zap. Williams proceeded to produce a body of intense, phantasmagorical paintings and jumpstarted the so-called "lowbrow" art movement, founding the influential Juxtapoz Magazine in 1994. He will discuss his career in comics and fine art with critic and curator Carlo McCormick (Paper Magazine)
