220 - 60 Seconds to Sharp!

05:12
Original post on our site with additional information, plans, questions & comments: http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/60-seconds-to-sharp/ Most videos about sharpening, including my own (http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/my-sharpening-system/), focus on how to tune up and old tool or properly set a new one. Thankfully, once you do that process it isn't likely you'll have to do it again for a very long time. From that point on, you'll be sharpening in maintenance mode. So while some sharpening systems lend themselves well to that initial setup process, the thing we should probably evaluate is how fast they allow me to sharpen a slightly dulled edge. After all, that's the lion-share of sharpening you'll be doing throughout your woodworking career. Fortunately, most systems that work well for the initial setup of an edge also work well for maintenance. If yours doesn't, you might consider looking into other options. I know I'm not alone when I say that if the system isn't fast and convenient, I won't use it as frequently as I should. And it isn't all about the gear either. Some techniques work better than others and your methodology can have even more impact than your sharpening medium. How it's Done! Now I can't claim my setup is the fastest one out there, but it certainly is fast enough for me. Most tools can be sharpened in 60 seconds or less. In order for this to work, the tool has to be set up properly in the first place with a flat back and a polished bevel of the appropriate angle. Also, the tool can't be excessively dull. Well, it can be, but that just means taking more time to work with the lower grits. Sharpening Medium My sharpening medium of choice is an 8000 grit Shapton Ceramic Stone: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008NPKZB8/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B008NPKZB8&linkCode=as2&tag=thewoodwhispe-20&linkId=HIDXP4BXTRTWVVWO While expensive, this stone will likely outlast my career and the trait most pertinent to this discussion is the fact that it doesn't require soaking like other water stones. Instead, a quick spritz from a spray bottle is all I need to prep the surface. Secondary Bevel The importance of the secondary bevel can't be overstated. The more metal you have to polish, the longer the process takes. So if we isolate our sharpening efforts to the very tip of the chisel, it doesn't take nearly as long to establish a sharp edge. The real trick with a secondary bevel is being able to hit that exact same angle each and every time you sharpen. Honing Guide Honing guides are one of those hotly debated topics in woodworking. I myself am an unapologetic honing guide user. I can get decent results going free-hand and some tools just won't fit into a honing guide. So I will go sans honing guide when necessary, but for maintenance sharpening I really enjoy the accuracy and repeatability of a honing guide. The one I use is the Veritas Mk.II. The reason I like this one in particular is because it allows me to easily set the blade for micro-bevel sharpening, which is essential to this quick sharpening system. Technique I'll do about 20 strokes on the bevel and then another 20 strokes on the back. That's it. About half of the 60 seconds is spent messing with the jig and the other half is spent on actual sharpening. With a grand total of one minute invested, you can see how this system allows you to develop a good habit of sharpening early and often. Dull tools are dangerous and the longer you put off sharpening, the more you put yourself at risk. Not to mention, your work benefits greatly from sharp tools. So get yourself a system that's quick, easy, and convenient and you'll never regret it! ----------------------------- The Wood Whisperer is education and entertainment for the modern woodworker! Sharp Blades KRX Survival Knife!

02:36
This series of knives have been developed primarily for use on bushcraft and survival. Therefore, the knife is substantially more massive structures. Moreover, it is provided with a hammer on the end of the handle, which can crush the stones and hammering nails. Due to the partial hardening is achieved that knife when really big stress rather bend than break. This is a big advantage, because in crisis situations, it is better to have a fully functional and a little bend knife than half broken.

These instructions are in English and in German. The knife itself comes in really nice leather, dark brown sheath, which has also a sling for attaching it to the leg or you can also attach it to your belt and then on your leg. It has interesting two safeties for the knife, so even if you unleash this traditional safety the knife still stays in the sheath, so you have to remove this sling and here you go. This is Original Bowie made by Puma. You can see here, each knife gets measured for the hardness. It was tested here, before it leaves the company. And as you can see, this knife is quite big, it is long, not too heavy and has a traditional Bowie design. It is almost, well it is 28 centimeters long, the blade itself is 15.5 centimeters long, it has a thickness of 4 millimeters and is a one piece, full tang design. The blade goes from here all the way to here, to the end of the handle. It weight 200 grams and is made of 440 C stainless steel, it has a satin finish and for handle material a natural stag horn is used. It has really nice finish and is very durable natural material. Smooth, as you can see in some parts this material is polished, it is not satin anymore like the blade. So it was really a lot of attention was invested in the details in this knife, when it was produced. The knife is handmade, so you can that every piece has some unique features. The knife also has a steel bolster, here, between the handle and the blade. And it has a brass sling hole, and brass bolsters for the handle. It is robust, reliable but still precisely handmade knife made by Puma in Solingen Germany. So, this was a short review of Puma Original Bowie and for more information, please click the link below in the description window of this video.

Precision Knife Sharpening in The Field

Keeping your knife sharp is as important as keeping your feet dry, and your gun clean. In this video I demonstrate how to sharpen small knives, and my preferred method on sharpening large knives and how to do it with improvised materials in the field. Find the Tahoma Field Knife at http://tinyurl.com/muzz8cu Eze-lap 510: http://tinyurl.com/ksvuxs3 Eze-lap 530: http://tinyurl.com/kufsjza In this video I use the Eze-lap 510 (400,1200 grit) and an Eze-lap 530 (1200, ceramic) and am able to get an edge with a CONSISTENT angle and sharper edge than what comes from MOST factories. Viper Golia knife review

06:54
http://www.sharp-planet.eu/en/viper-golia-knife.html The content of Viper Golia knife review: Welcome to another video review about Viper knife. This time about Viper Golia knife. This knife is made in Italy in Maniago, where Viper or if we are more precisely Tecnocut company is based, and where all the knives under Viper brand are produced. You probably noticed that also many other Italian manufacturers of knives are based in this city. Knives which are made in Maniago have very good reputation for high quality since decades. This time Golia! It is a tactical knife designed by Tommaso Rumici and it is a member of David & Golia series. Golia knife is bigger, while David knife is smaller. The knife comes with basic instructions in Italian and English, like all other Viper knives. This sheet of paper caries some basic information about Materials used, about proper care, maintenance and also some precaution about injury. It also caries warranty information and explain the Maniago quality system. All the knives, which are made in Maniago comply to this rules about Maniago quality. The knife comes with really advanced sheath made of Cordura and with reversible ballistic rubber core for the blade. It also has a two position safety for the handle. It is MOLLE compatible with all NATO standards about how it is possible to attach this sheath to your equipment, to your belt, to your clothes etc. It is really advanced. You can also see here, it has a special belt for attaching it around your leg. It also has a sling for attaching. It also has an additional pocket for sharpening stone or something similar. And what is the most interesting, that it is made in Italy. Like it is almost a fashion by most of the tactical knives, that this sheaths are made in Asia and they are not on the same quality level as a knife. This is not the case here. The sheath is really high quality and nicely made; with all small details, which are really special. The knife itself is also very beautiful. Even though it is quite a big knife and meant for tactical or outdoor use, and although it is big, all the details on knife are really nicely made. It has a high quality finish. You can see it here. It also caries Maniago quality sign, Tommaso Rumici design logo, and of course Viper logo, and Golia as a name. As you can see, the blade edge is plain, it is really nicely designed, a drop-point design, and really attractive. At the same time it is really robust; the thickness of the blade is almost 6.0 mm. It is really robust, but beautiful at the same time. The length of the knife is roughly 23.0 cm and the blade is 12.0 cm. It weight a little bit less than 300 g; 280 g to be exact. It is made of D2 tool steel. This steel is also heat treated in vacuum, without air and it is of high quality. The used material is on really on the level of the knife it is by looks and quality of finish. The quality of material is on the same very high level. It is PVD coated, that means Physical Vapour Deposition. It is black, non-reflective and the coating is the same on every and each spot of the knife; really nicely made. The blade hardness is 58-60 HRC. And as you can look, it has nice grooves for the thumb rest. It is not only beautiful, but also easy to use. It has two sling holes, if you want to attach a sling on the knife or if you want to attach the whole knife to stick. The handle is made of black canvas. These are black canvas scales. They are attached to the knife with two hex (inbus) screws. As you can see the blade is, the knife design is full-tang. It also has a feature similar to glass-breaker at the end. The scales have special grooves for better grip. It is also very ergonomic, handling is really superb for my hand especially. The texture of the scale is called Viperskin; made only by Viper. It is really nice, offers great grip in wet or any other condition and at the same time you really get a feeling of nice quality. This was a short review about Viper Golia knife. If you need any additional information about this knife, you can visit our web page by clicking the link bellow. Thank you for watching.

Polymer Clay Blades - A Must Have Polymer Clay Tool

06:25
Video #508: Slicing polymer clay canes and flat sheets requires the right tools... here are some options and ideas for you. More Info: http://www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?p=18489 Polymer Clay Tutor. Topics Covered In This Video: * Polymer clay cutting blades. * Sharp kitchen knife can work, but the top edge of the steel blade makes it more difficult for cutting canes. * Exacto knives are good for cutting and carving intricate pieces, but not so good for slicing canes. Most Xacto blades are too short. * Polymer Clay Blades are best suited for working with clay. Go figure. * Amaco Clay Blade: Available at craft stores like Michaels. Inexpensive. Fairly sharp. Stiff. Good for cutting canes. Great for removing sheets of clay from work surfaces. * Sculpey Super Slicer Set. Readily available. Reasonable priced. Very thin, fairly sharp blades. Several blades in set (stiff, flexible, large ripple, small ripple). Two interchangeable snap on handles. Good for cutting canes and curved pendants. Great for removing sheets of clay from work surfaces. * PVClay Blade (polymer clay product from Brazil). Must order from Brazil. Plastic/metal type material. Won't cut skin. Very thin blade so it cuts clay and canes nicely. Best choice for kids to use. * Tissue Blades (medical grade). Incredibly sharp - not for kids! Not readily available. Steal blade can rust. Many professional clayers swear by them. * Related Video: How To Slice Round Polymer Canes Without Distortion... http://www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?p=16908 * Related Video: Sugru Hack for the Amaco Bead Rack... http://www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?p=16030 * And... more info about today's video is at my blog... http://www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?p=18489 * Polymer Clay Tutor... Maserin Trigger 273 knife - review

04:13
http://www.sharp-planet.eu/en/maserin-trigger-273-knife.html #Maserin 273 #Trigger #knife is a #everydaycarry #EDC #pocketknife with advanced locking system, lever is located on the side of the handle. #Knife is designed by Claudio Riboni. More about Maserin Trigger: http://www.sharp-planet.eu/en/shopby/series_outdoor_nav-maserin_trigger.html Video review content: Hello! This is going to a short video review of a foldable Maserin knife called Trigger. This knife was designed by Claudio Riboni. It is made in Maniago in Italy; very famous city, from where Maserin Company originates. As you can see, knife comes with a short introduction list of a Trigger line with all information about Claudio Riboni, when it was designed, what are the main features, what kind of steel is used, also the dimension and weight. It also comes with basic warranty information and maintenance and care instructions in English and in Italian. The description also comes in English and in Italian. As you can see, the knife doesn't come with any pouch or a sheath. And it is foldable, you need both hands to open it, it has a similar design feature as a nail-nick but a little bit bigger; on the both sides. You can also see engraved Riboni design, model number, Maserin logo and of course a Trigger name. What is really special about this knife is a Trigger lock. Lock is being operated with one hand as you can see. You pull this down and you can unlock it. This lever actually enables back-lock to be released. The knife is 18.5 cm long, its blade is about 8.0 cm long and it has a thickness of 4.0 mm. The knife also has a nice belt-clip, on both side have wood for better grip and nice, quality feel. It weight 86 grams and it is made of a stainless steel, a really good one, you don't need much care and maintenance, we could say care free steel. All parts are bead blasted; you can see that they have this nice finish. Except the belt clip is made from different material; it is made of titanium. The handle can be either from bocote wood, like on this knife, or from olive wood, and also some other materials. It doesn't have any sling hole or anything else, it only has three nice bolts, also made of stainless steel, nice screws. Like we mentioned before, a really safe and interesting lock. This was a short review of a Maserin Trigger folding knife and for more information you can always click the link bellow in the description of this video.
