The first human settlement arose in the hamlet of Alpicella in the 2nd millennium BC. Later, in the immediate vicinity of the local railway station, in the first century a Naval shipbuilding center of the Roman Empire emerged.  The first official citation of the name, shown on the Peutingerian Table, dates back to the X century with the medieval name Varagine  ("place where ships are launched").
And the flourishing activities related to the construction of ships and boats were the preconditions for a continuous struggle, in medieval times, between the municipalities of Savona and Genoa for the control of the fief and the territory of the warehouse. Already a member of the Aleramic brand, from the 12th century it became a fief of the family of Bosco and Ponzone (in the domains of the marquisate of the same name); In 1227 it was formed in a common autonomous and then inherited by the Malocello family (or Malocelli). Returning to the Genoese orbit, following the drafting and peace agreements of Varazze of 1251 on the division of the territories of Savona and Genoa, the feud was sold in 1290 by Malocello to the Republic of Genoa, which raised the village of Varazze to its homeland Podesteria having territorial jurisdiction today's villages of Cogoleto, Celle Ligure, Albissola Marina, Albisola Superiore and Stella.

In 1312 the sailor Lanzarotto Malocello surpassed the mythical Hercules Columns and landed on the island of Lanzarote, to which he would give his name, and discovered the archipelago of the Canary Islands.
In 1525, during a naval battle, Ugo of Moncada, commander of the fleet of Charles V, was here defeated and imprisoned. Then he followed the fate of Genoa and his naval republic, obtaining its statutes.
With the fall of the Republic of Genoa (1797), in the wake of the French Revolution and following the first Italian campaign by Napoleon Bonaparte, the warehouse municipality returned from December 2, 1797 to the Letimbro Department, with its capital Savona. In 1815 it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia, as it established the Vienna Congress of 1814 and later in the Kingdom of Italy since 1861. From 1859 to 1927 the territory was included in the fifth homonymy of the district of Savona belonging to the province of Genoa; In 1927 also the commune of Varazzi passed under the newly formed province of Savona. In 1864 he obtained the title of the city.
In the Astoria villa, at the end of the Second World War, a "Prison of the People" was established, in which 10 Fascists were killed on 1 May 1945, including retired Ulderigo Nassi and his wife .
From 1973 to 31 December 2008 he was a member of the Mountain Community of Jupiter.
