This was an interesting stop to say the least. We happen to catch the city of Tallinn during their hottest day of the year, so it was a warm one! None the less, we enjoyed touring the castle and spending the day in a new city. The end of the day just might be the best part, so make sure you watch all the way to the end! Thank you for watching, we'll see you tomorrow for our first day in St. Petersburg, Russia!

The Hanseatic League dominated long-distance trade from the 13th to the 16th century. The Hanseatic cities of central and eastern Europe are hoping to revive old traditions.Gdansk, Tallinn, Vilnius and Riga were every part as much of the Hanseatic League as Hamburg and Bremen. Even today, the cities' beautiful medieval buildings are a reminder of that age. Now that the states along the eastern Baltic have joined the European Union, the old Hanseatic cities are rekindling their old bonds. In the Middle Ages, the Hanseatic League's influence extended across much of Europe, and trade flourished. The Hanseatic cities even had their own legal system, which was an important factor in their economic and political success. Some experts say the Hanseatic League could serve as a useful model for European integration today.

This is a documentary about how lost fishing gear continues to fish over decades. It is a waste of resources and a level of cruelty to animals which has not been acknowledged in this way before. The film was financed by the Baltic Sea 2020 foundation and was broadcasted on TV4 Fakta in all Nordic countries. After the film was shown, several newspapers and news programs have also taken on the subject. In December 2011 the film received the environmental award at the international underwater film festival in Belgrade. This film was directed, produced and edited by Joakim Odelberg, Per W Rönnecke and Peter Isaksson.

I went from my home town Västervik on the Swedish east coast north via Leksand and Umeå to Haparanda at the very tip of the Baltic Sea and then south through Finland via Vasa and Kotka to the Russian border. I rounded the Gulf of Riga into Estonia, Latvia and Lethuania. After Balticum I rode through Poland and Germany from where I entered Denmark before crossing the bridge to Sweden. All in all 6.200 kilometres ofer 23 days.

This is a video of my trip to Åland Islands I did in August 2011. The Åland Islands is an autonomous, demilitarised, monolingually Swedish-speaking region of Finland that consists of an archipelago lying at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. Collectively, the islands in the archipelago form the smallest region of Finland, constituting 0.49% of its land area and 0.50% of its population. Åland's autonomous status means that those provincial powers normally exercised by representatives of the central Finnish government are largely exercised by its own government.

Kronborg is a castle and stronghold in the town of Helsingør, Denmark. Immortalized as Elsinore in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, Kronborg is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list (2000). The castle is situated on the extreme northeastern tip of the island of Zealand at the narrowest point of the Øresund, the sound between present Denmark and the provinces of present Sweden that were also Danish at the time the castle was built. In this part, the sound is only 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) wide, hence the strategic importance of maintaining a coastal fortification at this location commanding one of the few outlets of the Baltic Sea. The castle's story dates back to a stronghold, Krogen, built by King Eric VII in the 1420s. Along with the fortress Kärnan, Helsingborg on the opposite coast of Øresund, it controlled the entranceway to the Baltic Sea. From 1574 to 1585 King Frederick II had the medieval fortress radically transformed into a magnificent Renaissance castle. The main architects were the Flemings Hans Hendrik van Paesschen and Anthonis van Obbergen, whereas the sculptural work was coordinated by Gert van Groningen. In 1629 a fire destroyed much of the castle, but King Christian IV subsequently had it rebuilt. The castle also has a church within its walls. In 1658 Kronborg was besieged and captured by the Swedes who took many of its valuable art treasures as war booty. In 1785 the castle ceased to be a royal residence and was converted into barracks for the army. The army left the castle in 1923, and after a thorough renovation it was opened to the public. music: Travelers Notebook by Rafael Krux (CC license) Action Strike by Rafael Krux (CC license)

Because it is almost entirely enclosed, the Baltic Sea is the world's most fragile and most polluted bodies of water. It receives pollution from nine countries that have widely disparate natural resources, economies, social structures and mores. Some states are active in protecting the environment, but others are not. With these geographical circumstances, the Baltic suffers from pollution, utrification, invasive species, oil spills, and dumped World War II chemical weapons. As a result, it has more than 800 toxic hot spots. Under the patronage of His All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch and His Excellency Mr. Romano Prodi, former President of the European Community, in this film theologians, scientists, policy makers, environmentalists and journalists generate practical initiatives to protect the Baltic. It illustrates the ecological damage in the Baltic as well as the considerable efforts underway to heal it. In addition, it explores the paticipants' continuing quest for a wisdom-based environmental ethos for the world.

Travel video about destination Lithuania in Europe. Lithuania is situated on the Baltic Sea and has a long history, fortified castles and splendid palaces, a country that has many religious buildings and where religious faith has become an art form. Vilnius, the capital, is a city of Baroque mixed with Gothic, Renaissance and Classicism, a melting pot of culture. Its main landmark is Castle Hill with its red-coloured Gediminas Tower that marks the beginning of the city's history. The Boulevard begins in Cathedral Square where, adjoining the cathedral, is a fine white bell tower. The Cathedral’s interior still radiates a Gothic sense of space. The local people are particularly proud of the cathedral’s copy of the Turin Shroud. In the Middle Ages when the Grand Dukes ruled, the ancient capital of Trakei was the political centre of Lithuania’s power. The later built Water Castle is the real landmark of Lithuanian history. Grand Duke Vytautas had the castle extended and from it ruled a vast empire which, for a short time, stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Around forty kilometres northwest of Vilnius lies the archaeological site of Kernave, Lithuania’s ‘Troy’. The exhibits date from the tenth century B.C. until the Early Middle Ages. During the first centuries A.C., large settlements were established in the Pajauta Valley, which were protected by the Castle Mountains. On the edge of the Zemait Highland in the north lies Şiauliai, Lithuania’s fourth largest city, much of which had to be rebuilt after the Second World War and that since the sixteenth century had been an important market and trading city. Sundial Square is the city’s main landmark with its impressive sundial that was created for the city’s seven hundred and fiftieth jubilee in 1986. Full of European history, Lithuania has become a modern day country with magnificent castles, ancient towns, nature and culture and is a destination that is bound to please! -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. The Ministry of Defence said in a statement that it located the aircraft as it was heading towards the Russian border over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea. After this the Su-27 was sent to the air that approached the American plane at a safe distance and identified it as a surveillance aircraft, according to the Russian ministry. After the American plane turned around and started to leave the area near the Russian border, the SU-27 jet returned to its base. The Pentagon has not commented on the incident so far. 15/6/2012, PRESS RELEASE THE TREASURE HUNTERS, OCEAN X TEAM, DISCOVERED SOMETHING UNIQUE WHEN THEY DOVE DOWN TO THE MYSTERIOUS CIRCLE-SHAPED OBJECT IN THE BALTIC SEA Treasure hunters confirm they have found something abnormal in the seabed STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 15, 2012 The Ocean X Team dove down to the circle-shaped object in the Baltic Sea and met something they never experienced before. First they thought it was just stone or a rock cliff, but after further observations the object appeared more as a huge mushroom, rising 3-4 meters/10-13 feet from the seabed, with rounded sides and rugged edges. The object had an egg shaped hole leading into it from the top, as an opening. On top of the object they also found strange stone circle formations, almost looking like small fireplaces. The stones were covered in something resembling soot. "During my 20-year diving career, including 6000 dives, I have never seen anything like this. Normally stones don't burn. I can't explain what we saw, and I went down there to answer questions, but I came up with even more questions ", says Stefan Hogeborn, one of the divers at Ocean X Team. The path to the object itself can be described as a runway or a downhill path that is flattened at the seabed with the object at the end of it. "First we thought this was only stone, but this is something else. And since no volcanic activity has ever been reported in the Baltic Sea the find becomes even stranger. As laymen we can only speculate how this is made by nature, but this is the strangest thing I have ever experienced as a professional diver", continues Peter Lindberg, one of the founder Ocean X Team. Right now, scientists are examining samples from the circle-shaped object, and experts in sonar imaging are processing data from the ship to hopefully shed more light over the mysterious object.
