President Putin's New Limo President Putin, inaugurated for a fourth term on Monday, drove the estimated 200m distance from the Kremlin's Senate building to Andreevsky Hall in the brand new Russian-made extended wheelbase limo. Project Kortezh, officially called the 'Unified Modular Platform', envisions the creation of a family of luxury vehicles, including a limousine, sedan and minivan, based on a single platform. The vehicles, developed by the NAMI State Research Center in cooperation with automotive holding company Sollers, are expected to be marketed under the 'Aurus' brand (a blend of the Latin word Aurum, i.e. 'Gold' – and Rus, Russia). The cars have been manufactured in the framework of the project called "Cortege," on the basis of a single modular platform (EMP) developed by the State Research Center NAMI in Moscow. As a result of the thorough work, a new automotive concept has been formed. It is expected to be used for manufacturing different types of cars whose target audience would be not only prominent political figures, but ordinary people as well. The project's proclaimed strategic task is to bring a new generation of Russian cars to the market, based on the most advanced technologies in the automotive industry. Ford, Changan Ford and Alibaba.com's Tmall Vehicle launched a brand new brand experience pilot program to provide consumers with a "Super Test Drive" service. The project will use a combination of online digital technaology and offline entities to provide consumers with a more convenient, efficient, and in-depth test drive experience, and ultimately lead potential consumers to the Ford brand more accurately. Authorize dealerships and ultimately help facilitate offline transactions. From now on until April 23, Ford will enter the "Super Test Drive" vending machine building located in Baiyun District of Guangzhou as the exclusive co-brand of Tmall. The whole building is equipped with intelligent lifting system and advanced identity authentication system. It can accommodate up to 42 cars at a time. Visitors to the SEAT booth at the Expo can discover the new solutions for improving mobility developed by SEAT Metropolis:Lab Barcelona such as ride-sharing and Bus On Demand which XMOBA is going to implement as a pilot test next year; the evolution of the SEAT Cristobal concept car, now equipped with 5G technology; the new socially responsible navigation project partnering Waze with the Barcelona City Council; or the brand’s first vehicle of its urban micromobility strategy, the SEAT eXS powered by Segway. XMOBA and Metropolis:Lab collaborate for better mobility Teams at XMOBA and Metropolis:Lab, two independent SEAT Group companies, are working together to continue developing smart solutions that enhance mobility in cities. The Bus on Demand project, developed by Metropolis:Lab, aims to improve the efficiency of public transport with a service that adapts to user needs, including modifications to both the route and frequency of scheduled bus lines. The goal of the project is to optimise the use of existing buses by offering flexible routes that adapt to real time demand. The initiative is beginning now with a pilot test in Wolfsburg (Germany) and will be coming to Barcelona in upcoming months to begin its implementation in a second pilot phase. The second solution presented is a ride-sharing app developed by Metropolis:Lab. Following an initial pilot phase carried out with a selection of SEAT employees in Martorell, the app will be open to all users in the next year. The return of SEAT Cristobal, now 5G SEAT is also showcasing Cristobal 5G, the prototype that integrates advanced safety assistants for the reduction of risks and accidents. As part of its evolution, Cristobal now features 5G technology and enables the car to connect with the pedestrians and streets in its surroundings. A use case was recently presented in Segovia and Talavera de la Reina in collaboration with Telefónica. Cristobal’s three functions that are in the final stage for inclusion in new SEAT launches are the “Exit-Assistant”, a sensor to detect approaching cars or motorcycles when opening the door; the “Display-Mirror”, a door mirror that does away with blind spots; and the “Advanced ACC”, which automatically adapts driving speed to the permitted limit posted at all times. Socially responsible navigation with SEAT, WAZE and the Barcelona City Council Following the agreement reached in 2017, SEAT became the first brand to integrate Waze cooperative navigation in its vehicles. Now, in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council, both brands are taking a further step in their cooperation. By analysing data furnished by the Barcelona City Council and through the use of artificial intelligence, SEAT can predict events that could cause traffic disruptions, such as football matches, concerts or school drop-offs and pick-ups. With this information, Waze will inform users of the reasons for proposing route changes. This will improve urban mobility and prevent possible accidents at peak times during these kinds of common events. SEAT’s first urban micromobility vehicle Visitors to the Smart City Expo will have a chance to take the new eXS for a test run in an exterior venue prepared by SEAT which is open to the public. The SEAT eXS powered by Segway was designed exclusively by SEAT for its customers, and features Segway’s leading electric technology built into the platform of its ES2 model. This vehicle enables users to cover the remaining distance of any trip, even reaching places which are difficult for cars to access. Thanks to its large 8 inch diameter wheels, it is easy to ride and its front and rear suspensions give it smooth handling. The battery and engine combination enables it to travel up to 25 km/h. The eXS can also connect an additional battery to further increase its range, which reaches a maximum of 45 km depending on the conditions. The SEAT eXS can be purchased at all of the brand’s dealers beginning in December 2018, at a cost of €599. It will be available in Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Portugal before the end of the year, and in the rest of Europe in 2019.

Bugatti has transformed a virtual project into a tangible reality. the french super sports car brand presented the ‘vision grand turismo’ – digital renderings that celebrate racing history and their state-of-the-art motor sport technology. the project is the brand’s tribute to its great racing tradition of the 1920s and 1930s and its victories in le mans 24 hour races. the front face features the classic horse shoe grille the designers drew their influences from the brand’s historical themes, in particular, the bugatti ‘type 57 tank’. the bugatti ‘vision grand turismo’ brings the classic blue two tone finish of the ‘type 57 g tank’, which simultaneously evokes the colors of the historical french race cars of that period. the virtual race car was developed in cooperation with the bugatti engineers to embody the brand values and focus on details that make the vehicle have a real function. these ideals were based on cutting edge racing technology and precise aerodynamic analyses. the concept includes lines found on today’s bugatti veyron, the designers transferred the most important characteristics of bugatti’s DNA into the styling of the virtual race car. the side view, for example, of the bugatti ‘vision gran turismo’ is characterized by the famous lines of today’s models. in addition to the lines, the virtual car is labeled with a recognizable symbol of a bugatti – the horse shoe on the front grille. placed in the centre of the front air intake, the three dimensional sculpture supports the structure between the wings and the aerodynamic front splitter. the front styling is flanked by the eight eyed headlights, which were developed especially for the bugatti ‘vision gran turismo’.

Find us on: http://classiccarpictures.us/: When it comes to China and automotive doppelgangers, it's Chinese manufacturers cloning Western carmakers' models, but what you're seeing here is a European company turning one of its own cars into a Chinese-badged product, in this case, BMW using the X1 as a base for its upcoming Zinoro brand. At least that's what it looks like because BMW may further alter the design of the car before it reaches production. The spy shots show a current generation X1 wearing a different face that ditches the Bavarian brand's double-kidney grille, while also gaining different lights and bumper. The profile remains the same but at the back it appears that the prototype bears some changes to the tailgate and bumper designs. Zinoro is a new China market-only brand created by the BMW Group in cooperation with its main local partner, Brilliance Automotive, with the initial goal of building electric cars -- the first of which is believed to be a crossover based on the prototype you see pictured here. While we had heard rumors about BMW's plans on a new Chinese joint venture before, the German carmaker only made it official at the Auto Shanghai 2013 in late April. "A decade ago, we established our production presence in China," said BMW Group China CEO Karsten Engel. "Since then, we have invested 1.5 billion Euros in our production facilities with our joint venture partner, Brilliance Automotive and our close cooperation with BBA continues. Just last week, together we announced 'ZINORO', a new car brand designed for the Chinese market. Underpinning BMW's activities in China is not only our strategy development through the BBA joint venture, but also our exclusive partnership with Brilliance Automotive." BMW is not the only foreign carmaker to enter China's electric car market with a new brand, as Nissan is doing the same with the Venucia nameplate and Mercedes with Denza. That is why this carbon-bonded wooden component graces the boot floor in the BMW Individual M760Li inspired by Nautor's Swan. The boot is also intricately fitted out in Alcantara Smoke White. The interior trims, entry sills and floor mats are also made with teak and have been produced by Nautor's Swan. You can feel and see the yachting flair in every inch. This is enhanced by the presence of the Finnish brand’s insignia. The Nautor's Swan signet is stitched into the headrests and cushions. It also adorns the sun visors and interior trims made of European oak on the driver’s side and the central console. Elegant and discreet exterior design details. The cooperation between the two brands is also apparent on the exterior. The brake calipers on the BMW Individual M760Li, which are exclusively finished in the same colour as the car, each bear a sublime, raised Swan logo, which is manufactured in an extra procedure. The boot lid of the car is also decorated with the Nautor’s Swan arrow, which is usually to be found on the side of the yachts. The first stage in the process will be a virtual project developed by the luxury super sports car brand in cooperation with Polyphony Digital Inc., creators of the Gran Turismo video game franchise. For the first time, Bugatti will be represented in the "Vision Gran Turismo" category. This will make the extremely exclusive brand available to millions of car fans and Bugatti enthusiasts throughout the world. In addition, the "Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo" project will give an outlook of Bugatti's new form and design language. This virtual project is to be presented at the 2015 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn and Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche announced today that their companies have agreed to establish a 50:50 joint venture, the business entity that will oversee construction and operation of the new plant in Aguascalientes in north-central Mexico. The new plant will be built in the immediate vicinity of an already existing Nissan plant and will have an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles when fully ramped up. Start of production is planned for 2017 with Infiniti models. The production of Mercedes-Benz brand vehicles will follow in 2018. Daimler and Nissan will share the total investment cost for Aguascalientes of approximately €1 billion. The companies will add almost 5,700 jobs (including engineering, line workers and support staff) by the time the plant reaches full capacity, expected in 2021. In addition, a high localization rate will significantly increase the Mexican supply base. Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance: "Joint development of compact premium vehicles and joint production in Aguascalientes together represent one of the largest projects between the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler. Growing together in Mexico In Aguascalientes both partners will enjoy access to Nissan's award-winning, highly efficient workforce. Nissan has been producing vehicles in Aguascalientes since 1992, and the plant has expanded significantly just in the past year. In November, Nissan opened the first stage of a US$2 billion manufacturing complex in Aguascalientes. This increased Nissan's total capacity in Mexico to more than 850,000 vehicles annually. Mexico is already an important market for Daimler. The company has production plants for trucks and buses in Saltillo, Santiago Tianguistenco and Garcia, a parts distribution center in San Luis Potosí and a remanufacturing plant in Toluca. For passenger cars Daimler has a pre-delivery-inspection and a training center. Four years of increasing collaboration The French-Japanese-German industrial cooperation of Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance began in April 2010, with three "pillar projects" primarily focused on Europe. Since then, the portfolio has increased to twelve significant projects, including major initiatives from the Americas to Japan. Just yesterday, Infiniti and Daimler launched production of four-cylinder gasoline engines in Decherd, Tennessee, USA. With an annual production capacity of 250,000 units, the Decherd facility produces engines for use in the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and in the Infiniti Q50. Family for the US market will be an SUV * New electronics architecture forms the basis for digital services that enhance everyday driving At the Los Angeles Auto Show Volkswagen is offering visitors a look at the future of its electric mobility campaign. Volkswagen is presenting three show cars at the Californian show – the compact I.D., the spacious I.D. BUZZ and the elegant I.D.CROZZ SUV. They represent a completely new vehicle architecture that has been consistently designed for electric drive systems. By 2025 the Volkswagen brand plans to sell one million electric vehicles per year and is aiming to be the market leader in electric mobility. The first model from the all-electric I.D. Family for Europe will be a compact model, while in the USA the first model will be an SUV. "Cars stand for freedom and individuality", says Jürgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand responsible for Sales, Marketing and After-Sales. "The mistakes of the past have speeded up many things at Volkswagen and a real opportunity arises from the crisis. We believe in electric mobility and in a great future for the automobile. It is the most important means of transport in the USA accounting for almost 80 per cent of passenger kilometers travelled." The Volkswagen brand will meet the challenges of the future with the I.D. models. They are based on the all-electric architecture that will be used group-wide. The new e-vehicles offer zero-emission long-distance travel, fast charging capability and spacious, flexible interiors. "The special features of our architecture are the new proportions with long wheelbases and short overhangs", says Christian Senger, head of the e-mobility product line at Volkswagen, and he adds: "This enables us to create a completely new space concept offering great flexibility for vehicle occupants and cargo." Senger uses the example of the I.D. compact car to demonstrate how the size of the interior has grown: "It has the exterior dimensions of a Golf, but offers as much interior space as a Passat." This is possible thanks to a space-saving axially parallel e-drive and the high-voltage battery housed in the vehicle floor. This also applies to all other body shapes: "The all-electric architecture enables all kinds of different vehicle types to be developed, from the compact class to a seven-seater SUV." In Los Angeles Stackmann revealed that in addition to the three models already presented (compact vehicle, SUV and MPV) new members will be added to the I.D. Family in future, including a saloon. Not only do all models have electric drive as a common feature, but also a new kind of connectivity. Instead of a large number of control units, in future the vehicle electrical system will have powerful central board computers with central software that can always be updated and upgraded. This new architecture is the basis for new digital in-car services that enhance everyday driving. "The technological innovations we are currently working on will further increase the potential of the automobile", says Stackmann. "As well as a highly attractive design and numerous ways of meeting individual customer requirements, we will do everything we can to meet the growing demands that people make on sustainable mobility." This starts with approaching customers in the right way. In a joint project with the US software group Adobe, potential customers are targeted in social networks and will then find information on the I.D. generation customized according to their profiles on a new Volkswagen internet portal. Even before visiting a Volkswagen dealership customers can virtually experience the new electric vehicles, also in unusual places. Stackmann says: "We are cooperating with Microsoft here: augmented reality allows us to present the new car virtually in space or in a particular place with the help of HoloLens glasses, for example in cafés and shopping malls." Further cooperation between Volkswagen and an IT group concerns infotainment being realized together with IBM called Predictive We Services. The basis for this is the digital assistant "Watson", who researches possible intermediate destinations for shopping or dinner online and is also able to book them with voice command during the journey. "For more than 70 years Volkswagen's strength has been in making technologies and above all mobility accessible to people, regardless of the drive system. And that's the way it will be in the future. We make high quality electric mobility accessible to everyone", is how Jürgen Stackmann summarizes Volkswagen's targets.

The new Mercedes-AMG Project ONE is the most ambitious project the performance and sports car brand has ever planned. The hybrid engine from Formula 1 and the electrified front axle provide a fascinating combination of performance and efficiency. This high-performance hybrid is said to produce over 1000 horsepower and reach top speeds beyond 350 km/h (217 mph). The show car combines outstanding race track performance and day-to-day suitable Formula 1 hybrid technology with exemplary efficiency. This is a world first. The overall responsibility for the realisation of Project ONE lies with Mercedes-AMG. The complex development work was carried out in close cooperation with the Formula 1 experts at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth and with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport team in Brackley. Together with the four-door AMG GT Concept, the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE provides another insight into the future performance-hybrid drive strategy of the sports car brand within Mercedes-Benz. The 1.6-litre V6 hybrid petrol engine with direct injection and electrically assisted single turbocharging comes directly from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car. The four overhead camshafts are driven by spur gears. To achieve high engine speeds, the mechanical valve springs have been replaced by pneumatic valve springs. The vehicle is mid-engined (ahead of the rear axle) and it can easily reach speeds of 11,000 rpm, which is currently unique for a roadgoing vehicle. However, for higher longevity and the use of commercially available Super Plus petrol instead of racing fuel, it remains significantly below the F1 engine speed limit. The electric motors on the front axle are also true rev wonders, with rotor revolutions up to 50,000 rpm – current state of the art is a speed of 20,000 rpm. The very high-revving engine is additionally boosted by a high-tech turbocharger. The exhaust gas and compressor turbines are separated from one another and located at an optimum position to the exhaust side and to the intake side of the V6 engine, and connected to one another by a shaft. This shaft features an electric motor with approximately 90 kW which, depending on the operating status, electrically drives the compressor turbine with up to 100,000 rpm – for instance when moving off or following load changes. The Formula 1 designation for this unit is MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit Heat). At the end of 1992 BMW GB withdrew from the championship after the rules had been changed in a direction which BMW felt disadvantaged them. Prodrive, which had run the works operation for BMW, picked up their now famous Subaru contract to build rally cars. Prodrive had been expected to be entering a works Mercedes Benz team in cooperation with AMG, running the C-class. Prodrive stalwart Tim Sugden and Bernd Schneider were due to drive for the team. The plans were for a late season appearance leading to a full challenge in 1994, but this eventually came to nothing. Vic Lee Motorsport was liquidated after owner Vic Lee’s drug scandal. The assets of the team were taken over by Steve Neal and Ray Bellm, who picked up personnel from Euroracing’s discontinued sports car effort and merged it into Neal’s Rimstock Racing outfit, creating Team Dynamics. Bellm would sell his share in the team later in the year, leaving Steve Neal as the only owner. The team started the 1993 season with three 1992-spec 318iS cars piloted by Matt Neal, Ray Bellm and Alex Portman, later dropping down to two. Only weeks after BMW GB withdrew from the BTCC, BMW withdrew their Schnitzer Motorsport-run works operation from the German DTM championship, also there because of their disagreement with new rules. With few other series to contest in Schnitzer Motorsport were sent over by BMW to the British championship along with works drivers Steve Soper and Joachim Winkelhock. Andy Rouse had lost his Toyota contract to famous Toyota tuners TOM'S Norfolk-based European arm known as Tom’s GB, who had previously run Group A Toyotas in BTCC in the eighties. Andy Rouse’s seat was taken over by Julian Bailey, and the new shape Carina E GTi replaced the older model. Toyota also supported a junior team run by Park Lane Racing, who would run two older shape Carinas for James Kaye and Bobby Verdon-Roe. Rouse himself had landed a Ford works deal, but the new Mondeo would not appear until after the season had started. Vauxhall retained their John Cleland / Jeff Allam line-up in the Vauxhall Cavalier and their Ecurie Ecosse semi-works team; at Ecurie Ecosse David Leslie retained his seat and was after a few races joined by fellow Scotsman Harry Nuttall. Peugeot added Eugene O’Brien and Ian Flux to Robb Gravett for a three-car line-up in the Peugeot 405 Mi16 (with Flux’ car being run by Roy Kennedy Racing); Nissan ran three cars for Keith O'Dor, Win Percy and Tiff Needell, and Mazda returned with Patrick Watts in a brand new Xedos 6. Renault was the new manufacturer to join the championship with Alain Menu and reigning champion Tim Harvey as their drivers in the Renault 19 16v The BTCC then headed to Wales for Round 8 at Pembrey, where Ford made its debut. Winkelhock won the race with Hoy in second and Soper in third.

On April 18, Chinese state-owned automaker FAW Group officially unveiled its L4 self-driving truck and announced that the all-new Jiefang J7 has been off the production line. As FAW Group’s self-owned commercial vehicle (CV) brand, the Jiefang delivered around 90 thousand MD/HD trucks in the first quarter this year, jumping 16.3% year on year and occupying 24.2% market shares in this segment nationwide. According to FAW Group’s introduction, the Jiefang J7, regarding European's counterparts as benchmark, has been upgraded in exterior, interior, configuration as well as manufacturing procedure. At the launching ceremony, the automaker also showcased its AI intelligent driving system UNI. Hu Hanjie, general manager of FAW Jiefang showed a demo that demonstrated how a Jiefang truck with L4 autonomous driving system runs on roads. Then the company launched a world premiere of its ICV (intelligent container vehicle) which was designed for port operation. After the launching ceremony, FAW Jiefang signed strategic agreements with Port of Qingdao and Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) respectively to extend broader cooperation in intelligent commercial vehicle development, core technology research, marketing promotion and operation etc. It is worth mentioning that FAW Group received provisional licenses from Changchun municipal government that allow some specified autonomous models, including the Hongqi H7, the 2018 FAW Besturn X80 SUV and the Jiefang J7, to be tested on roads. Just one day later, the group obtained a similar license for its Hongqi H7 from another city Chongqing.

The development of a Group-wide platform and digital services for the "Volkswagen We" ecosystem is being accelerated. The Group plans to invest 3.5 billion euros in digitization by 2025, making the car the central hub on the Internet of Things. “We have a clear vision: we will continue to build vastly superior vehicles. But going forward, our Volkswagens will increasingly become digital devices on wheels”, Jürgen Stackmann, Volkswagen Brand Board Member for Sales, said today at a press conference in the Group Representative Office in Berlin. “Our customers will become part of an ecosystem that we have named ‘We’. This system complements the Volkswagen experience on wheels and enables customer to take their world into their vehicle”, Stackmann commented, adding that the brand hoped open interfaces would also encourage third parties to participate in creating a strong community by contributing their own software. Volkswagen already offers its customers the following applications: "WePark", the parking app with integrated billing, "WeDeliver", parcel delivery to the trunk, and "WeExperience", personalised offers and recommendations near the car park. Volkswagen is now expanding its portfolio with "WeShare" and entering car sharing. The offer starts in Berlin in 2019 and includes 2000 electric cars from Volkswagen (e-Golf & e-up!). From 2020, the fleet will gradually be converted to models of the I.D. electric family. Following its launch in Berlin, "WeShare" will make its debut in other major German cities, and is planned to enter European core markets and selected cities in North America from 2020. Michael Jost, Chief Strategy Officer of the Volkswagen Brand and Head of Group Strategy Product, emphasized that software and the associated services would make a significant contribution to differentiation in the automobile industry in future. According to Jost, “to deal with this development, we need to reinvent the automobile in some ways.” That includes a redesigned, much simpler vehicle IT architecture, which will celebrate its premiere in the I.D. family of electric models from 2020. This IT architecture dispenses with a large number of separate control units that run on manufacturer-specific software – today, there are as many as 70 such units in a vehicle. Instead, vehicle intelligence will be concentrated in just a few computers with a unified programming language. In future the software will come from one source – the customer will experience services based on the “vw.OS” automotive operating system. As Jost explained, “separating the hardware from the software lays the groundwork for continuous updates and upgrades.” Furthermore, this means climbing to the next level on the road to autonomous driving. 2020 will therefore be a turning point for the Volkswagen brand. While today, some 1.5 million vehicles with no online access can already connect with the Internet thanks to the “Volkswagen Connect” retrofit solution, 2020 is the year when Volkswagen begins connecting its entire fleet. Each year, over five million new vehicles will then become part of the Internet of Things. Volkswagen has also realigned its sales model to keep the ecosystem as open and accessible as possible. For the first time, the new dealer contracts allow Volkswagen to engage direct with customers over the vehicle’s entire life cycle. Customers can thus receive tailor-made offers without having to make an appointment with a workshop. The backbone of the ecosystem will be a Group-wide, primarily cloud-based platform, the “One Digital Platform” (ODP). This platform is mainly based on cloud-technology and connects the car, the customer and the services. The ODP ensures the connection with our IT architecture comprising Volkswagen services or such of external partners which are integrated in the Volkswagen ecosystem. “Volkswagen is spearheading the development of the OPD in collaboration with the Group brands. And we are seeking additional external support. We will soon be announcing cooperation projects and partnerships”, Christoph Hartung, Head of Digital & New Business / Mobility Services at the Volkswagen brand, said. With its “Transform 2025+” strategy, the brand launched the biggest change process in its history. By 2025, Volkswagen intends to play a leading role in the new automobile industry, set up innovative mobility solutions and become the world market leader in e-mobility. The focus is on the evolution from an automaker to a mobility service provider with a connected fleet. The Volkswagen brand is planning to spend some €3.5 billion on its digitalization offensive during this period and intends to generate sales revenue running into billions from digital offerings and services.

It ranges in microcars and subcompacts, primarily the Fortwo and Forfour with its primary assembly plants located in Hambach, France and Novo Mesto, Slovenia. Marketed in 46[2] countries in Asia, North and South America, Africa, Australia and Europe, production of the Fortwo had surpassed 1.7M units by early 2015. The design concept for the company's automobiles began at Mercedes-Benz in the early-70s and late-80s. After brief backing by Volkswagen, the first model was released by Daimler-Benz in October 1998. Several variants on the original design have been introduced, with the original being the "Fortwo". smart derives from cooperation with Swatch and Mercedes: Swatch Mercedes ART. In its branding, the company lowercases its logotype and the logo incorporating a "c" and an arrow for "compact" and "forward thinking" respectively. In late 1982, SMH (makers of the Swatch brand of watches) CEO Nicolas Hayek began developing an idea for a new car using the same type of manufacturing strategies and personalization features used to popularize Swatch watches. He believed that the automotive industry had ignored a sector of potential customers who wanted a small and stylish city car. This idea soon became known as the "Swatchmobile". Hayek's private company Hayek Engineering AG began designing the new car for SMH, with seating for two and a hybrid drivetrain. While design of the car was proceeding, Hayek feared existing manufacturers would feel threatened by the Swatchmobile. Thus, rather than directly competing, he preferred to cooperate with another company in the automotive industry. This would also relieve SMH of the cost burden in setting up a distribution network. Hayek approached several automotive manufacturers and on July 3, 1991, he reached an agreement with Volkswagen to share development of the new project. By 1993, Ferdinand Piëch had become CEO of Volkswagen and he immediately sought to terminate the project with SMH. Volkswagen had already been working on their own "three-litre car": a car which would consume three litres of fuel per 100 km of driving (the eventual Volkswagen Lupo 3L). Volkswagen's own concept was believed to be a better business proposition, featuring four seats and more cargo room. Hayek had suspected that Piëch would seek to end the agreement with SMH upon his ascendancy to the CEO position; therefore, he discreetly began approaching other car companies with the Swatchmobile project. Rebuffed by BMW, Fiat, General Motors and Renault, he finally reached an informal agreement with Daimler-Benz AG, maker of Mercedes-Benz cars. A deal was announced on March 4, 1994, at a press conference at Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Stuttgart that the companies would join forces in founding Micro Compact Car AG (MCC). 49% of the initial capital of 50 million Swiss francs were provided by SMH and the remaining 51% by Daimler-Benz. The company consisted of two subsidiaries: MCC GmbH based in Renningen (a suburb of Stuttgart) which would design the car, and the then-unnamed manufacturing plant. SMH Auto SA, owned by Hayek, would design a hybrid electric drive system for the car, while Hayek Engineering would audit the design and manufacturing. The press conference also featured the debut of two concept cars: the eco-sprinter and eco-speedster, styled by Mercedes-Benz's design studio in California.[12] The cars were similar to the eventual smart City-Coupé. No mention was made of the fact that SMH had no input in the design of these concepts,[13] and they were badged as Mercedes-Benzes. By the end of April 1994, MCC had set up a head office in Biel, Switzerland.
