Portrait Painting Tutorial | Keeping it Classical (part 1) - Real Time

01:04:45
In this week's portrait painting video we are going to keep it classical. We will start off with a charcoal drawing directly onto our canvas, go over that with pastel pencil, and then create an underpainting. This is a very relaxing way of working, and it's also an "old master" style approach. Now, I'm not trying to perfectly copy the photograph, nor am I claiming that any old master actually painted like this. This is purely aimed at guiding you through an "old master" inspired painting demonstration. If you would like to see more of my artwork, please follow/check out my Instagram page at: https://www.instagram.com/yuparifineart/ If you would like to contact me or commission a painting, here is a link to my website: https://www.yuparifineart.com The materials used in this video are listed below, Canvas: 11x14" Cotton Canvas Acrylic Primed (toned with burnt umber oil paint a week or so before filming) Oil Paints: Winsor & Newton- Titanium White Plaza Brand- Raw Umber Mineral Spirits: Mona Lisa brand Charcoal: Nitram Fusain Round Pastel Pencil: Faber-Castel Burnt Umber Brushes Used: Princeton Summit 2 Round 6100R (the green one) Master's Touch Size 6 Flat Bristle Brush and 4 filbert Princeton Catalyst Polytip Bristle Size 4 Filbert

08:51
ArtistsNetwork.TV invites you to preview Classical Painting: The Realist Sight-Size Method with Judith Kudlow for an introduction to realism and the sight-size method working from a still-life set up. Join Judith in her Spanish Harlem atelier to learn how to set up a still life and make size measurements based on what your eyes actually see. You'll learn to stand back from your painting and use plumb lines to mark off the height of the objects of your still life. You'll also learn how to determine and mix all of your colors before you make the first brush stroke. Finally, you'll learn how to give form to the objects in your painting to achieve a natural, realistic look. Then, visit http://ArtistsNetwork.TV for access to the materials lists and to stream the entire video to learn all about realistic painting using these easy painting techniques. Judith Kudlow maintains a studio and atelier in a century-old cabinetmaker's building in New York City. She studied painting with acclaimed classical painters in New York and Italy. Her working method is based on the 19th-century academic tradition that emphasizes working from life to produce paintings based on precise drawing, careful modeling to produce the three-dimensional illusion, harmonious and accurate colors and values, and compositions based on time-honored rules.

Classical style speed painting of a live model by Jonathan Hardesty

05:45
Hi Everyone, My name is Jonathan Hardesty and I teach and paint for a living. This painting was a quick sketch over a 2 hour period. I did it as a live demo for my online students, but decided to increase the speed by 2000% and put it up here on youtube. I love doing these quick sketches of models because it is a nice departure from the longer, more involved pieces that I send to my gallery. These type of sketches, while not perfect, are fun because you can focus on capturing a person using your first impression. I paint exclusively from life and you can see the model there at the end taking a look at the painting. You can see more of my work at http://www.jonathanhardesty.com . I teach the classical methods online as well at http://www.classicalartonline.com . I get questions about my materials a lot as well so here is a list: Palette colors: (Rembrandt - Ivory Black, Ultramarine Blue, Viridian, Asphaltum, Transparent Oxide Red, Permanent Red Medium, Yellow Ochre Light, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Lemon) (Gamblin - Alizarin Permanent) The medium I use is gamsol with about 25-30% poppy oil. I use silver grand prix filbert brushes, and langnickel 5590 sables. My canvas is Claessens Type 13 oil primed.

Painting in oils : how to art instruction in classical tonalist manner with art entertainment & fun

14:50
Painting in oils can sometimes be intimidating. Often times, dedicated how-to oil painting art lessons are too complicated. Sometimes you just need to simply and calmly watch an experienced artist work. Aspiring artist can learn much in this time-tested manner. In this video I show you how a full-time professional artist works. Notice the brush work, the underpainting and the speed with which I paint. Speed is often underated. Often times simply painting faster can improve your work drastically. Speed turns off your analytical left brain and enhances your creative right brain. If you are not an aspiring artist you may just enjoy watching a professional artist at work. That is great too! The creation of a painting is a truly wonderful thing. It comes from that place inside that cannot be named. It is mysterious...it is beautiful...it is love. Copying a Velazquez - Painting a classical portrait in oils

02:16:31
Support these videos on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/paintingcourse http://painting-course.com In this uncut version you can see the entire process I go through to create a copy of a Diego Velazquez portrait. . As I state in the video, I'm still not really happy with the finished product, but I don't think much more could be gained from a tutorial point of view. Pay attention both to how I mix my colors and create new flesh tones, as well as how the painting evolves. I did have to wait for the painting to dry completely before doing some glazing in the second half of the video using Zinc White instead of Titanium white. I get a lot of requests from students who simply want to learn by watching, so I've done my best to accomodate you all. Watch it at your own pace, or hop around in the timeline to see the changes. Another fun feature that Youtube has is that you can actually speed up the time yourself in the Youtube settings in the bottom right corner of the video. I'll also upload a timelapsed version soon. Shieh has been working on his style of meticulous painting for over a decade, depicting modern subject matters, often infused with a distinctive sense of humor. In this class, Shieh will demonstrate claborate-style painting techniques with which participants will create a self-portrait of their own childhood from old photographs. ABOUT WILSON SHIEH Wilson Shieh, a painter trained in the Chinese fine-brush (gongbi) technique, works on various media ranging from Chinese ink drawing on silk to acrylic on canvas to paper cut-out collage. Classical style speed painting #2 of a live model by Jonathan Hardesty

08:21
Hi Everyone, My name is Jonathan Hardesty and I teach and paint for a living. This painting was a quick sketch of a friend over a 1 hour and 20 minute period of time. I love doing these quick sketches of models because it is a nice departure from the longer, more involved pieces that I send to my gallery. These type of sketches, while not perfect, are fun because you can focus on capturing a person using your first impression. When something is an hour and 20 minutes you really need to move fast. You have to see things accurately from the beginning, place them, and then pretty much leave them. You don't have time to mess around with things too much.

The same is true to become a great painter. I can't tell you how many students come to me who have had years of art school, have never been "taught" how to paint! But their frustration ends here! Whenever an Artist speaks about a "linage" of instruction, it is a proud declaration of where their knowledge came from. Ours is a fusion of Northern European, Classical Italian and California Impressionism. With this background we can hone in on an individual's choice of style once foundations in painting are achieved. The first “initiation” exercise that students seeking to Master Classical Oil Painting should accomplish is our Compass Rose exercise. This exercise teaches the student first, basic skills for blending, glazing etc. as well as the Zorn palette of colors, introducing the student to a new way of “seeing.” Students Will Learn Renaissance Painting Techniques Monochromatic studies How to deconstruct a painting How to apply color & how to mix paint Using mediums Glazing Secrets

Today I'm going to be coloring this linework: (http://lol.disney.com/games/coloring-pages/rapunzel-tangled-the-series-coloring-page) by studying this painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the Swing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Swing_(painting) This is a great way to dive into a classical piece of art and try to apply it to your own paintings. I have a lot to learn and I would love to revisit this challenge in the future when I have some more experience under my belt. From what I can see, this challenge was started by Ryan Wood. So show him some love for this amazing idea! Amazing Classical Paintings In Motion - "Beauty" by Rino Stefano Tagliafierro

02:04
This video is the Short Version http://www.rinostefanotagliafierro.com/beauty_video.html Animator and filmmaker Rino Stefano Tagliafierro has always found the intensity of the emotions he encounters through classical paintings unmatched by other art forms. And when he sat down to craft his latest short film, Beauty, he sought to convey the emotional impact of that artwork on him to an audience who might not be otherwise moved. "The idea of Beauty is born from the desire to (convey) the main emotions that every person encounters throughout his life path," says Tagliafierro. "Classical art has always attracted my most intense emotions, so I decided to (let it) represent them." The resulting project, Beauty, is a tour through the human life cycle—from birth to death—that draws on those classical paintings to tell that story in an absorbing way. By adding subtle animation to the artworks he chose, Tagliafierro actively depicts the motion that's only ever implied in the original pieces. The result is a stunning, haunting series of moving images that makes the work feel alive in different—often surreal—ways. The possibility that these images could be both beautiful and jarring by adding motion is something that Tagliafierro was aware of when he conceived the project. "I've always found the idea to move a frozen image interesting," he explained. "The movements are suspended in a distant time, or appear to come from the imagination of the viewer." In an earlier short, 2011's My Super8, (which screened at nearly a dozen film festivals around the world) Tagliafierro used a similar technique to animate photographic images—which taught him the power of using surreal imagery to convey difficult-to-reach emotions. "[In My Super8], I moved the characters in surreal ambiance," he explained, while in Beauty, he says, "the gestures and looks of the characters can be surreal and bewitched, and this aspect is part of my imagination—a bit creepy and restless—that shines through in all of my work. But my intent was first to convey the emotions you feel when I find myself in front of the masterpieces of classical art. Since Beauty is an emotional story, my main focus was to arouse strong emotions. I hope I succeeded." The answer to that question is up to the individual viewer, but the diligence of Tagliafierro's process means that, if someone watching Beauty is unmoved, it's not for lack of trying. "I elaborated the images with photo editing software, and used cut-out digital," he explains of the techniques he used to bring Beauty to life. "It's a meticulous process that consists of the characters cut out from the depths of rebuilding and redesigning the hidden parts. Then, I animated the subjects with After Effects." He passed the work on to the project's sound designer, Enrico Ascoli—but, he says, "The search and selection of images lasted years." The result is a nine-minute film that spans 115 paintings and the journey from birth to death. There's plenty of beauty to be found in that.

Classical Landscape Oil Painting Demonstration - Part 1 (Drawing)

18:58
This is part 1 of a series of videos peering over my shoulder as I paint a 5x7 landscape scene. I typically begin my classical-style paintings with a line drawing or tonal study to help establish where things are in the composition. I stain my canvas with a thin mixture of solvent and a fast-drying earth color such as umber or sienna. I allow the stain to dry for about a week or so and then go back in to create the drawing. This process allows me to prepare a foundation for the blocking layer that will be added once the drawing layer has dried. I prefer to work traditionally, allowing my paint to dry naturally without adding modifiers. If you want the stain to dry faster, you can use a color infused with an alkyd dryer such as Gamblin's Fast Matte or Winsor & Newton's Griffin.
