How does an Oracle database start? - Database Tutorial 38

12:39
Video 38 How does an Oracle database start? - Database Tutorial 38 How does an Oracle database start? - Database Tutorial 38 The startup of sequence of an Oracle Database. 1) Startup process looks for a parameter file in the default location. 2) If a parameter file is found, it then parses it and gets the information about the control files. 3) With that information, it reads the control files. 4) Upto this point, we can say that the Oracle Instance has been started in nomount mode. 5) The same can be achieved by issuing the following command in sqlplus. a) startup nomount; 6) Then, from the control files, the Instance gets to know about the details of the database and its related files. 7) It then 'mounts' the database. 8) At this point, the database has been started. But it can be only accessed by the DBAs. 9) This is called 'mount' mode. 10) The same can be achieved by issuing the following command in sqlplus. a) startup mount; 11) Then, once the database has mounted, it gets opened for other users. 12) This is called 'OPEN' mode. 13) This is the final mode of a startup process after which the database is available for use. 14) The same can be achieved by issuing the following command in sqlplus. a) startup 15) That concludes the startup.

ORACLE DBA Startup Stages

02:33
The Startup 'nomount' Stage When you issue the startup command, the first thing the database will do is enter the nomount stage. During the nomount stage, Oracle first opens and reads the initialization parameter file 'init.ora' to see how the database is configured. For example, the sizes of all of the memory areas in Oracle are defined within the parameter file. After the parameter file is accessed, the memory areas associated with the database instance are allocated. Also, during the nomount stage, the Oracle background processes are started. Together, we call these processes and the associated allocated memory the Oracle instance. Once the instance has started successfully, the database is considered to be in the nomount stage. If you issue the startup command, then Oracle will automatically move onto the next stage of the startup, the mount stage. Starting the Oracle Instance 'Nomount Stage' There are some types of Oracle recovery operations that require the database to be in nomount stage. When this is the case, you need to issue a special startup command: startup nomount, as seen in this example: startup nomount The Mount Stage When the startup command enters the mount stage, it opens and reads the control file. The control file is a binary file that tracks important database information, such as the location of the database datafiles. In the mount stage, Oracle determines the location of the datafiles, but does not yet open them. Once the datafile locations have been identified, the database is ready to be opened. Mounting the Database Some forms of recovery require that the database be opened in mount stage. To put the database in mount stage, use the startup mount command as seen here: startup mount If you have already started the database instance with the startup nomount command, you might change it from the nomount to mount startup stage using the alter database command: alter database mount; The Open Oracle startup Stage The last startup step for an Oracle database is the open stage. When Oracle opens the database, it accesses all of the datafiles associated with the database. Once it has accessed the database datafiles, Oracle makes sure that all of the database datafiles are consistent. Opening the Oracle Database To open the database, you can just use the startup command as seen in this example startup If the database is mounted, you can open it with the alter database open command as seen in this example: alter database open;

Dropping Oracle Database 11g Manually with Drop Database Statement

05:17
DROP DATABASE Purpose Caution: You cannot roll back a DROP DATABASE statement. Use the DROP DATABASE statement to drop the database. This statement is useful when you want to drop a test database or drop an old database after successful migration to a new host. Prerequisites You must have the SYSDBA system privilege to issue this statement. The database must be mounted in exclusive for RAC and restricted mode, and it must be closed. Semantics When you issue this statement, Oracle Database drops the database and deletes all control files and datafiles listed in the control file. If the database used a server parameter file (spfile), it is also deleted. Archived logs and backups are not removed, but you can use Recovery Manager (RMAN) to remove them. If the database is on raw disks, this statement does not delete the actual raw disk special files.

Dropping a Database via RMAN

01:44
In Oracle Database 10gR1 Oracle introduced the RMAN command DROP DATABSE. This one simple statement has the ability to completely remove a database including all RMAN backups with the optional INCLUDING BACKUPS clause. DROP DATABASE removes all data files, control files, online redo logs. The DROP DATABASE command can optionally delete backups including backup sets, proxy copies, image copies and archive redo logs from the target database from all configured device types. If the target database is connected to a recovery catalog at the time DROP DATABASE is issued the target database will be unregistered as well as drop delete any backups known to catalog. If the command is issued in NOCATALOG mode then any backups known to the catalog will not be dropped but they will not be in the target database control file either. The DROP DATABASE must be executed in RMAN while connected to the target database that is mounted and not open and started in RESTRICT SESSION. Below is a demonstration of the DROP DATABASE command that will drop the database and all backups associated with the database. The Database in the example was not registered with a recovery catalog.

We can also say that SQL tables are kind of data structure which are used by database for efficient storage of data. To create a table in our database we use SQL CREATE TABLE command. SQL CREATE TABLE is a type of DATA DEFINITION LANGUAGE also known as DDL. To Create a table in your schema you will require CREATE TABLE system privilege. In our future videos we will see what are system and object privileges and how to grant them to a user. Today for this video we will be using Sample schema HR which already has all the necessary privileges. Ohk Let's see the syntax. CREATE TABLE table name ( column name1 Data-Type(size), column name2 Data-Type(size), ..... ); CREATE TABLE is an oracle reserved word or say an Oracle key word whereas There are 3 different ways of creating a table in Oracle database. Creating a table using Command Line Interface (CLI) in Oracle database For demonstrating how to create table in oracle database using CLI, I'll be using Command prompt. Thats how we create table using command prompt. you can check your table structure by DESCRIBE command for that just write DESC and your table name. Like this Another way of creating a table is by using Graphic user interface (GUI) in Oracle database To demonstrate how to create table using GUI we will use SQL developer. Lets open our SQL developer I am connected to HR schema if you do not know how to create a connection to database using SQL developer please watch my oracle database tutorial 4 that explains database connectivity using SQL developer and command prompt. Link for this video is in the description below. So lets create a table. Creating a table using SQL developer is very easy we do not have to fire any query here. Let's start First of all right click on your connection in which you want to create a table and choose schema browser. This will open a separate schema browser pane or you can expend your connection by clicking this + sign and then right click on table and choose New Table. However I prefer working with schema browser so let's skip to schema browser pane here from the first drop-down list you can choose connection name and in the second drop down list you can choose what database objects you want to work with we want to create a table thus I'll choose table and then click this arrow here and choose option for new table Ok we have created a table wizard first of all give a unique name to your table and add some column as well. For this, click the green plus button. Now we already have a column so give it some name. Also choose a datatype from the list and specify any size you can check this not null column if in case you want to make this a mandatory column you can also specify default value and constraint If you want to make this column a primary key you can click here In my future video i'll show you what are these constraints and different ways of applying them on a column in a table. for this video we will concentrate on create table only so when you are done with all your columns click ok Thats your table You can double click on your table here and can see its structure. Thats it

SQL archive log list; Database log mode No Archive Mode Automatic archival Disabled Archive destination /u02/app/oracle/oradata/orcl/arch Oldest online log sequence 25 Current log sequence 27 SQL Now we shutdown the database and bring it backup in mount mode. SQL shutdown immediate Database closed. Database dismounted. ORACLE instance shut down. SQL startup mount ORACLE instance started. Total System Global Area 849530880 bytes Fixed Size 1339824 bytes Variable Size 511708752 bytes Database Buffers 331350016 bytes Redo Buffers 5132288 bytes Database mounted. SQL Lastly all that is needed it set archive log mode and open the database. SQL alter database archivelog; Database altered. SQL alter database open; Database altered. SQL archive log list Database log mode Archive Mode Automatic archival Enabled Archive destination /u02/app/oracle/oradata/orcl/arch Oldest online log sequence 25 Next log sequence to archive 27 Current log sequence 27 SQL We can now see that archive log mode is enabled. Notice that Automatic archive is enabled as well. In Oracle 9i an earlier another parameter needed to be set in order to enable automatic archiving. This in no longer the case in 10g and 11g as automatic archiving is enabled when the database is placed in archive log mode. You can switch to the log file to see that an archive is written to archive log location. SQL alter system switch logfile; System altered. SQL host [email protected] ~$ ls /u02/app/oracle/oradata/orcl/arch 1_27_711369564.dbf [email protected] ~$ exit exit SQL The following are the steps required to disable archive log mode on an Oracle 10g or 11g database. Verify the database log mode. [email protected] ~$ sqlplus / as sysdba SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.1.0 Production on Thu Apr 8 12:54:05 2010 Copyright c 1982, 2009, Oracle. All rights reserved. Part 2 of the Video Series "Oracle Application Express on Google Compute Engine" In this video, we provide steps on how to setup and install Oracle Database Express Edition 11g on Google Compute Engine. Below are the steps done: Pre-requisites 1. yum install unzip libaio bc flex 2. Swap https://www.tecmint.com/create-a-linux-swap-file/ In this example, we will create a swap file of size 2GB using the dd command as follows. Note that bs=1024 means read and write up to 1024 bytes at a time and count = (1024 x 2048)MB size of the file. dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/swapfile bs=1024 count=2097152 And then set the appropriate permissions on the file; make it readable only by root user as follows. chmod 600 /mnt/swapfile Now setup the file for swap space with the mkwap command. mkswap /mnt/swapfile Next, enable the swap file and add it to the system as a swap file. swapon /mnt/swapfile Afterwards, enable the swap file to be mounted at boot time. Edit the /etc/fstab file and add the following line in it. /mnt/swapfile swap swap defaults 0 0 Download Oracle Database Express Edition 11g https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/database-technologies/express-edition/downloads/xe-prior-releases- 5172097.html Oracle Application Express 5 on Google Compute Engine Video Series ----- Part 1. Oracle Data Guard Tutorial - Open the Standby Read Only (Part 2 of 4)

16:49
This tutorial provides a quick review of what Data Guard is, and then goes on to show how you can extract value from Data Guard in every-day usage: how you can use it to enhance performance, and to reduce (yes, reduce!) your need for Oracle licences. Opening the standby database read-only. This has in fact been possible since the automation of redo transport and redo apply when it was first introduced in release 8i. Redo is received on the standby database but is not applied. So the redo is written to the RFS, slave to standby logs, archive to standby logs into archive logs but there's no apply done. So recoverability is not compromised. There's still no danger being lots of data. You're still receiving. The thing is open read-only. What does that mean? It means you can run queries against it. You can offload all your heavyweight queries from the primary to the standby. When I say all of them, even queries that require vast massive temporary space, those horrendous queries, those doing hash joins between multi gigabyte tables, they'll be generating many gigabytes of temporary data. You can write temporary data. Provided that you're using proper temporary tablespaces which you're certain you should be, you can run any query no matter how big, no matter how much temporary data it needs. You can also write audit data and this is important because with version 11, there's quite a lot of auditing enabled by default. By default, that auditing goes to the database, writing database tables. And you can't write to a database table in a read-only database. That we can configure for automatic switching and direct the audit records to the operating system or the trail instead. The queries you run, why is this such a good facility? First, you're taking stress off the primary. I'm sure that we're all DBAs here and we all know how difficult it is to tune your database or a concurrent workload that includes both high volume DML and includes heavyweight queries. Basically, you can't tune that way at all. Offloading the queries to the physical standby will reduce a lot of stress from the primary. So your DML should run significantly better and you can even do a certain amount of tuning on the standby to tune for optimal query performance. The most obvious tuning one would do, would be the memory parameters. No one could for example give the primary a massive PGA aggregate target and the much smaller SGA target or use indeed automatic memory management, perhaps cell tuning. One can adjust many parameters to do with tuning the optimizer to drive the optimizer to a certain execution plan, to exploit the environments. All that can be done on an open read-only database. How does one do it? It really couldn't be simpler. If we look at my physical standby here, this thing database role, physical standby - and if we select the open mode from v$ database, we find this in mount mode. How do we actually open at read-only? First off, we have to stop the recovery process because remember redo is received but no applied. You have to cancel the recovery. So "alter database recover managed standby database cancel." That will give us a read consistent version of the database. The command is intelligent enough to know that there might be incomplete transactions. Long-run transactions could've been partially received. We will end up with a read consistent version. To cancel it, all we do is alter database open read-only. It is that simple.

SQL Server Live Mount for Development and Testing Purposes

11:26
Mike Preston (Technical Marketing Engineer) walks through utilizing Rubrik Live Mount for multiple testing and development use cases, including table comparisons and database health checks. Rubrik's Live Mount for SQL Server capability grants near-instant access to specific point-in-time copies of production databases. Live Mount requires no upfront storage provisioning and does not transfer large amounts of data across the network. Instead, point-in-time copies of databases are mounted directly from the Rubrik cluster.

Acura & Jonathan Jarvis at al. - Interactive Oracle, Multi-Touch Audiovisual Interface 2006/2007

01:52
Each of the three Oracles that we built consist of a tabletop based projection with a high lumen projector mounted underneath, and a multi-user, multi-touch sensor system above. As visitors move their hands across the surface, Acura related graphics and symbols come to life with a flourish of activity and sound. Two interface elements allow visitors to control the experience. An inner slider / handle lets users select from four different categories of visuals: technology, connected, performance, and design. The two outermost sliders / handles, allow a user to control the color spectrum, from which the symbols will randomly select, when they generate themselves.
