The Dead Sea has already lost more than one third of its surface area over the years. The water level is currently dropping by over 1 meter every year and its shoreline is expected to drop from 411 meters to 430 meters below sea level by 2020, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East. Traditionally, the Jordan River is the Dead Sea’s inflow source. However, 50 years ago it was diverted to supply cities, reducing the water inflow level to the Dead Sea to just 5% of its original volume. The hot and dry climate of the region makes it difficult for the Dead Sea to restore itself. That added to the rapid loss of water has resulted in the increased salinity of the lake. The group also points out that the Dead Sea is threatened by cosmetic companies that extract mineral water from the region to make beauty products. Hotels and attractions built along the shoreline also release untreated sewage into the Dead Sea. Even though the Dead Sea does not have any wildlife in itself, the region around it is known for supporting several endangered species such as ibexes, leopards and the indigenous Dead Sea Sparrow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. I grew up learning that if you want to have a nice conversation, avoid religion and politics - but since I’ve arrived in the Middle East, that’s completely thrown out of the window in this 29-minute video all about religion and politics. Ok, let’s be real, I did dive into the Tinder scene in Palestine, as well as what they’re watching on Netflix. I also had approximately 500 questions for all of my taxi drivers…and I think I got them all answered in this video too. A complete guide to visiting Masada, the Dead Sea, Ein Gedi and Qumran. This video will show you all you need to know about the main sites in the Judaean Desert. Here’s what this video is about: Masada: How do you get there? A brief history of Masada and information about the best way to see Masada – an unknown trail that surrounds Masada. The Dead Sea is one of the wonders of the world. It is the lowest point on earth and you can float on its dense salty waters! Where are the best beaches and what do you need to be aware of? Ein Gedi is a national park that is home to two spring-fed streams with drinkable water that flow all year round - Nahal David and Nahal Arugot. A visit to Ein Gedi combines history – there is an ancient, 6,000-year-old temple, and a beautiful synagogue with a mosaic floor – and wildlife – there are plants that originally come from Africa, and you get to see animals including the ibex and the rock hyrax. Ein Gedi is perfect for those who love hiking. Most visitors go for two to three hours, but there are also longer full-day treks. Qumran is a small archeological site. I describe it as the most important unimpressive site in the world. The site is hardly spectacular in itself, but in order to understand it you need to look at the cliffs all around and know the history of the place. The Dead Sea scrolls were found in the caves set in the cliffs around Qumran. This is one of the most important archeological finds in Israel and the world. The Dead Sea, bordering the Middle Eastern countries of Israel and Jordan, and the Palestine territories, is reportedly losing water, with the surface receding at the rate of around three feet annually, due to irrigation water taken out of its tributary, the River Jordan. The Dead Sea, bordering the Middle Eastern countries of Israel and Jordan, and the Palestine territories, is reportedly losing water, with the surface receding at the rate of around three feet annually, due to irrigation water taken out of its tributary, the River Jordan. An agreement has been signed by officials from Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority in an effort to save the Dead Sea from disappearing by bringing water from the Red Sea to a desalination plant in Jordan and piping the resulting brine to the Dead Sea. Hydroelectric energy will be used to power the desalination process that will also provide drinking water for the area. The deal was signed at the World Bank headquarters in Washington D.C. with a projected cost of between 250 and 400 million dollars. The Dead Sea not only provides water for the area, but is also popular with the health and tourism industry thanks to its unique mineral properties. These industries are threatened by the loss of water, which some estimates say could disappear by 2050. However, environmental advocacy groups are also concerned over the possible effects of the brine on the area's fragile ecosystem. What do you think about the plan to bring brine from the Red Sea to restore the Dead Sea' s water level?

Killing the Dead Sea (1996): A report on the environmental dangers faced by the Dead sea. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Synopsis: In the last 40 years the sea level of the Dead Sea has sunk 16 metres, leaving behind white, salty residues on the sandy shore. Ecologist Gidon Bromberg believes industry and over-development may have robbed the sea of its chance to rejuvenate. For years, the shimmering waves and oases of palm trees have provided a natural spa tourists. Lured by the therapeutic benefits of low humidity and oxygen rich air, they can float in the water and read books or cover themselves in black mud to soak up the medicinal effects. But as new international hotels spring up, Bromberg laments the lack of co-operative strategy between Jordan and Israel. He says, "there is no holistic plan" and worries that industrial mineral plants on both sides of the sea continue to drain the basin. If there is still hope of hydrating the patchy ground and sandy shelves surrounding the sea, then development of this historical and geographical treasure must be properly controlled. (21 Jun 2017) LEADIN: Scientists in Jordan say a mega drought that devastated the Middle East thousands of years ago is set to return. Evidence found inside bubbles trapped in salt below the Dead Sea predicts another mega drought heading for the area at some point during this century. The findings point to a bleak future for the Middle East where the water in the Dead Sea watershed that is currently used by Israel, Palestine and Jordan might vanish completely. STORYLINE: The air vibrates with heat along the lowest point on Earth 430 metres or 1,412 feet deep below sea level. This is the shoreline of the Dead Sea near the Wadi Zarqa Ma'in canyon in Amman, Jordan. The water glitters in the hot sun, the shores are rimmed with sharp salt crystals. But the salt lake is slowly shrinking – losing a metre of depth a year – as climate change and human water consumption deplete its resources. Geologists from Jordan, Israel and the United States are collecting preliminary samples from ravines and waterfalls across the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. Ancient clues buried in mud, rock and salt just might help these scientists learn more about the future of this area - that many believe will likely be even more arid than it is today. While the western side of the Dead Sea in Israel is well-studied. The team here hopes to fill in what they describe as "the blank map" of Jordan with geological data that can help them explain when and how the Dead Sea has grown in the past. Yael Kiro, a geochemist at the Columbia University Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory says: "We want to learn what's going on in the Dead Sea in terms of how much water from the eastern side and what is the composition of water and what is the composition of sediments. We can't understand without this the changes that we see in the Dead Sea and therefore we can't understand the climate without knowing what is going on here." Kiro lead a Dead Sea drilling project in 2010 along with fellow geologists, Moti Stein and Stephen Goldstein. A floating drill discovered evidence of cyclical growth and shrinkage of the salt lake. At times it stretched to the Golan Heights; other times mega droughts devastated the watershed and drove the Dead Sea 100 metres deeper than it is today. When water flows downhill it carries with it soil, salt, trees and other detritus like animal carcasses. Over thousands of years this material forms layers coloured by its contents – ashen white for dry summers and dark grey for fertile winters. Geologists can read the history in these bands of colour – and use sophisticated laboratory experiments to discover intricate details of changes of climate 200,000 years ago until today. "Now we are with our partners and colleagues from Columbia University to study and sample different water resources from the eastern part of the Dead Sea and besides that we are sampling rocks and different soil profiles to see any indicators of the paleoclimate which is the climate thousands of years ago to have a clear idea about what was the climate, what is the climate now, and then we can forecast the future climate of the Dead Sea area," says Marwan al-Raggad, a hydrologist at the University of Jordan. "Our main objective is to study the climate in the area and to see how the climate affects the Dead Sea and for sure if the climate is affecting the Dead Sea it will affect the ecosystem it will effect the whole community of the area in the Middle East and Northern Africa areas that is contributing to the Dead Sea areas." Goldstein is a geochemist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. He has studied the Dead Sea for 30 years. What's so special about the Dead Sea? The Dead Sea is the world's largest Natural spa. He is at the lowest point on earth (410 meters below sea level) and abundant variety of minerals with healing properties proven cosmetic benefits. Life-giving waters of the Dead Sea have a high mineral concentration in the world - an astounding 32%. Sedimentary layers of clay, made mineral rich black mud, producing extraordinary concentrations of natural elements (ten times more than ocean water) such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, strontium, boron and iron - are essential to maintaining healthy skin and soft. Finally, the low altitude creates a dense cover of pure oxygen, clean pollution, which provides additional protection and filters the sun's harmful rays. These are only some of the reasons why people come from all over the world to enjoy a magical oasis that heals.

Hello Friends Welcome to My Youtube Channel I visited this place 2 years back and now I want to share my experience with you guys but first let's start with some facts. The Dead Sea – bordering Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan – is a salt lake whose banks are more than 400m below sea level, the lowest point on dry land. Its famously hypersaline water makes floating easy, and its mineral-rich black mud is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments at area resorts. The surrounding desert offers many oases and historic sites. PLEASE ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• SUBSCRIBE. LIKE. COMMENTS. There is one special place that simultaneously terrifies and has unexplainable pull: 300 ships gone missing, 75 aircrafts never found; you're right, that's all about the Bermuda Triangle. Few people are aware of what the life is like at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle – are you ready to meet the most shocking and scary creatures ever? Dragonfish live at the staggering depth of 5 to 7 thousand feet. This fish looks quite terrifying, with its black coloring and the light it produces on its own. Unlike other deep-water inhabitants, dragonfish produces light in the infrared range while the blue and green range is what other fish stick to. Vampire Squid has the largest eyes in terms of proportions in the world and is born to live in the depth. These animals are also covered with photophores which distract predators and lure prey. The mouth of the gulper eel is loosely hinged which makes it extremely wide and big. In fact, the length of the jaw of the eel reaches one-fourth of the length of their body. Despite being the owner of an enormous mouth, the gulper eel has tiny teeth, and this means that it isn't supposed to prey on large animals. The Goblin Shark reaches 13 ft in size and is also called the Vampire Shark due to the fact that it avoids light at all cost. Due to this feature, you can see the shark in its natural habitat only if you go as deep as 890 to 4300 ft. Pharynx, a complex feeding apparatus that helps Eunice Aphroditois catch the prey, can turn inside out, not unlike glove fingers. It has strong and extremely sharp mandibles which can easily cut the prey in half due to the strength and speed of the worm's attack. These are just some of the creatures that lurk in the depth of the Bermuda Triangle. Who knows what other unbelievable horror-movie beasts we can meet there? Nobody knows for sure what makes crafts disappear in this area. -Dragonfish looks quite terrifying, with its black coloring and the light it produces on its own in case of danger. -The Vampire Squid has is bright red eyes and crimson cloak that looks like webbing. In case of a threat, these creatures can invert their skin exposing their spines. -The pouch-like structure of the lower jaw allows the eel to deposit its prey there. Even the stomach of the eel can stretch so much that the creature can hold there a huge amount of food. -The Goblin Shark reaches 13 ft in size and is also called the Vampire Shark due to the fact that it avoids light at all cost. As soon as the prey appears in the vicinity, the jaw of the shark will elongate and grab it. -The worm buries itself in the seafloor with just a fraction of its body exposed. It has five antennae it uses to sense the prey. Join me on a trip to Ein Gedi, as well as the Dead Sea (the lowest point on planet Earth)! The day started off with a multi-hour hike at Ein Gedi, followed by a visit to the beach to float in salty waters of the Dead Sea. We also saw Masada from the bus while en route. The Sea of Galilee, also Kinneret, Lake of Gennesaret, or Lake Tiberias (Hebrew: יָם כִּנֶּרֶת, Judeo-Aramaic: יַמּא דטבריא, Arabic: بحيرة طبريا), is the largest freshwater lake in Israel, and it is approximately 53 km (33 mi) in circumference, about 21 km (13 mi) long, and 13 km (8.1 mi) wide. The lake has a total area of 166.7 km2 (64.4 sq mi) at its fullest, and a maximum depth of approximately 43 m (141 feet). At levels between 215 metres (705 ft) and 209 metres (686 ft) below sea level, it is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake overall (after the Dead Sea, a saltwater lake). The lake is fed partly by underground springs although its main source is the Jordan River which flows through it from north to south.

The Dead Sea, also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west. Its surface and shores are 429 metres (1,407 ft) below sea level, Earth's lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 304 m (997 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 34.2% salinity (in 2011), it is also one of the world's saltiest bodies of water, though Lake Vanda in Antarctica (35%), Lake Assal in Djibouti (34.8%), Lagoon Garabogazköl in the Caspian Sea (up to 35%) and some hypersaline ponds and lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica (such as Don Juan Pond (44%)) have reported higher salinities. It is 9.6 times as salty as the ocean. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 50 kilometres (31 mi) long and 15 kilometres (9 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley and its main tributary is the Jordan River. The Dead Sea has attracted visitors from around the Mediterranean basin for thousands of years. In the Bible, it is a place of refuge for King David. It was one of the world's first health resorts (for Herod the Great), and it has been the supplier of a wide variety of products, from asphalt for Egyptian mummification to potash for fertilizers. People also use the salt and the minerals from the Dead Sea to create cosmetics and herbal sachets. The Dead Sea water has a density of 1.24 kg/litre, which makes swimming similar to floating. The Dead Sea is an endorheic lake located in the Jordan Rift Valley, a geographic feature formed by the Dead Sea Transform (DST). This left lateral-moving transform fault lies along the tectonic plate boundary between the African Plate and the Arabian Plate. It runs between the East Anatolian Fault zone in Turkey and the northern end of the Red Sea Rift offshore of the southern tip of Sinai. It is here that the Upper Jordan River/Sea of Galilee/Lower Jordan River water system comes to an end. The Jordan River is the only major water source flowing into the Dead Sea, although there are small perennial springs under and around the Dead Sea, forming pools and quicksand pits along the edges. There are no outlet streams. Rainfall is scarcely 100 mm (4 in) per year in the northern part of the Dead Sea and barely 50 mm (2 in) in the southern part. The Dead Sea zone's aridity is due to the rainshadow effect of the Judaean Mountains. The highlands east of the Dead Sea receive more rainfall than the Dead Sea itself. To the west of the Dead Sea, the Judaean mountains rise less steeply and are much lower than the mountains to the east. Along the southwestern side of the lake is a 210 m (700 ft) tall halite formation called "Mount Sodom". In the early part of the 20th century, the Dead Sea began to attract interest from chemists who deduced the sea was a natural deposit of potash (potassium chloride) and bromine. The Palestine Potash Company was chartered in 1929, after its founder, Siberian Jewish engineer and pioneer of Lake Baikal exploitation, Moses Novomeysky, worked for the charter for over ten years. The first plant was on the north shore of the Dead Sea at Kalya and produced potash by solar evaporation of the brine. Employing Arabs and Jews, it was an island of peace in turbulent times. The company quickly grew into the largest industrial site in the Middle East and in 1934 built a second plant on the southwest shore, in the Mount Sodom area, south of the 'Lashon' region of the Dead Sea. Palestine Potash Company supplied half of Britain's potash during World War II, but ultimately became a casualty of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Following the 1948 war, the Kalya plant in the West Bank was shut down, having been dismantled by the Palmach prior to their retreat. Operations restarted at the southern Sodom plant in 1952, and have continued to the present. The remnants of the Palestine Potash Company were nationalised and Dead Sea Works Ltd. was established in 1952 in its stead as a state-owned company to extract potash and other minerals from the Dead Sea. In 1995, the company was privatized and it is currently owned by Israel Chemicals. From the Dead Sea brine, Israel produces (2001) 1.77 million tons potash, 206,000 tons elemental bromine, 44,900 tons caustic soda, 25,000 tons magnesium metal, and sodium chloride. Israeli companies generate around US$3 billion annually from the sale of Dead Sea minerals (primarily potash and bromine) and from other products, which are derived from Dead Sea Minerals. Israel has 15 hotels along the Dead Sea shore, generating total revenues of $291 million in 2012. Most Israeli hotels and resorts on the Dead Sea are on a six kilometer stretch of the southern shore. The Palestinian Dead Sea Coast is about 40 kilometers long. The Palestinian economy is unable to benefit from Dead Sea chemicals due to restricted access, permit issues and the uncertainties of the investment climate.

http://davidsbeenhere.com/ DBH Unplugged continues its journey through the Kindgom of Jordan to the city of Madaba. Here David tours Saint George's Church, home to the famous mosaic floor map, which is the world's oldest, intact depiction of the Holy Land. This is only the beginning of Madaba's mosaics though, with hundreds more unearthed and on display throughout this 'city of mosaics'. Tour this ancient side of Madaba as David displays the ruins and remains of churches, houses, columns, roads (and of course mosaics) left behind from the Roman period. With sites still being excavated and discovered today, you can get a sense of how important this ancient city has been throughout history. Continue on towards the capital with David for even more temples, theatres, statues and ruins providing more insight into this country's rich history. Tour these amazing sites and get all the history with the DBH Guide: Dead Sea, also available for your Kindle. Travel with me at http://blog.davidsbeenhere.com/ http://www.visitjordan.com/
