That is, the API call that returns a GUID is guaranteed to always return a unique value across space and time. Its related to MAC address based On network card and the system time. The uniqueidentifier data type in SQL Server is stored natively as a 16-byte binary value. We can get a Guid from NewID() or NewSequentialID() NEWID() - randomly generates a guaranteed unique value based on the identification number of the server's network card plus a unique number from the CPU clock. We can use this in Insert, Select Statement. NEWSEQUENTIALID() - generates these values in sequential order as opposed to randomly. We can use this in Create Statement default value and We can’t use in Insert, Select Statement The major advantage of using GUIDs is that they are unique across all space and time. This comes in handy if you're consolidating records from multiple SQL Servers into one table, as in a data warehousing situation. GUIDs are also used heavily by SQL Server replication to keep track of rows when they're spread out among multiple SQL Servers The main disadvantage to using GUIDs as key values is that they are BIG. At 16 bytes a pop, they are one of the largest datatypes in SQL Server. Indexes built on GUIDs are going to be larger and slower than indexes built on IDENTITY columns, which are usually ints (4 bytes)

Instead you should be using parameters. Notice in the following example, we are creating dynamic sql queries by concatenating parameter values, instead of using parameterized queries. This stored procedure is prone to SQL injection. Let's prove this by creating a "Search Page" that calls this procedure. Name it "DynamicSQLInStoredProcedure.aspx". This is an example for good dynamic sql implementation. Create Procedure spSearchEmployeesGoodDynamicSQL @FirstName nvarchar(100) = NULL, @LastName nvarchar(100) = NULL, @Gender nvarchar(50) = NULL, @Salary int = NULL As Begin Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Declare @sqlParams nvarchar(max) Set @sql = 'Select * from Employees where 1 = 1' if(@FirstName is not null) Set @sql = @sql + ' and [email protected]' if(@LastName is not null) Set @sql = @sql + ' and [email protected]' if(@Gender is not null) Set @sql = @sql + ' and [email protected]' if(@Salary is not null) Set @sql = @sql + ' and [email protected]' Execute sp_executesql @sql, N'@FN nvarchar(50), @LN nvarchar(50), @Gen nvarchar(50), @sal int', @[email protected], @[email protected], @[email protected], @[email protected] End Go On the code-behind page, use stored procedure spSearchEmployeesGoodDynamicSQL instead of spSearchEmployeesBadDynamicSQL. We do not have to change any other code. At this point run the application one more time and type the following text in the "Firstname" textbox and click the "Search" button. ' Drop database SalesDB -- Notice "SalesDB" database is not dropped, So in this case our application is not succeptible to SQL injection attack. Summary : Whether you are creating dynamic sql in a client application (like a web application) or in a stored procedure always use parameters instead of concatnating strings. Using parameters to create dynamic sql statements prevents sql injection.

Difference between sequence and identity in SQL Server

sql server identity vs sequence In this video we will discuss the difference between SEQUENCE and IDENTITY in SQL Server This is continuation to Part 134. Please watch Part 134 from SQL Server tutorial before proceeding. Sequence object is similar to the Identity property, in the sense that it generates sequence of numeric values in an ascending order just like the identity property. However there are several differences between the 2 which we will discuss in this video. Identity property is a table column property meaning it is tied to the table, where as the sequence is a user-defined database object and is not tied to any specific table meaning it's value can be shared by multiple tables. Example : Identity property tied to the Id column of the Employees table. CREATE TABLE Employees ( Id INT PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY(1,1), Name NVARCHAR(50), Gender NVARCHAR(10) ) Example : Sequence object not tied to any specific table CREATE SEQUENCE [dbo].[SequenceObject] AS INT START WITH 1 INCREMENT BY 1 This means the above sequence object can be used with any table. Example : Sharing sequence object value with multiple tables. Step 1 : Create Customers and Users tables CREATE TABLE Customers ( Id INT PRIMARY KEY, Name NVARCHAR(50), Gender NVARCHAR(10) ) GO CREATE TABLE Users ( Id INT PRIMARY KEY, Name NVARCHAR(50), Gender NVARCHAR(10) ) GO Step 2 : Insert 2 rows into Customers table and 3 rows into Users table. Notice the same sequence object is generating the ID values for both the tables. INSERT INTO Customers VALUES (NEXT VALUE for [dbo].[SequenceObject], 'Ben', 'Male') INSERT INTO Customers VALUES (NEXT VALUE for [dbo].[SequenceObject], 'Sara', 'Female') INSERT INTO Users VALUES (NEXT VALUE for [dbo].[SequenceObject], 'Tom', 'Male') INSERT INTO Users VALUES (NEXT VALUE for [dbo].[SequenceObject], 'Pam', 'Female') INSERT INTO Users VALUES (NEXT VALUE for [dbo].[SequenceObject], 'David', 'Male') GO Step 3 : Query the tables SELECT * FROM Customers SELECT * FROM Users GO Output : Notice the same sequence object has generated the values for ID columns in both the tables To generate the next identity value, a row has to be inserted into the table, where as with sequence object there is no need to insert a row into the table to generate the next sequence value. You can use NEXT VALUE FOR clause to generate the next sequence value. Example : Generating Identity value by inserting a row into the table INSERT INTO Employees VALUES ('Todd', 'Male') Example : Generating the next sequence value using NEXT VALUE FOR clause. SELECT NEXT VALUE FOR [dbo].[SequenceObject] Maximum value for the identity property cannot be specified. The maximum value will be the maximum value of the correspoding column data type. With the sequence object you can use the MAXVALUE option to specify the maximum value. If the MAXVALUE option is not specified for the sequence object, then the maximum value will be the maximum value of it's data type. Example : Specifying maximum value for the sequence object using the MAXVALUE option CREATE SEQUENCE [dbo].[SequenceObject] START WITH 1 INCREMENT BY 1 MAXVALUE 5 CYCLE option of the Sequence object can be used to specify whether the sequence should restart automatically when the max value (for incrementing sequence object) or min value (for decrementing sequence object) is reached, where as with the Identity property we don't have any such option to automatically restart the identity values. This means a given student can be enrolled into many courses and a given course can have many students enrolled. Below is the question asked in an interview for SQL Server Developer role. Write a SQL script to insert data into StudentCourses table. Here are the rules that your script should follow. 1. There will be 2 inputs for the script Student Name - The name of the student who wants to enroll into a course Course Name - The name of the course the student wants to enroll into 2. If the student is already in the Students table, then use that existing Student Id. If the student is not already in the Students table, then a row for that student must be inserted into the Students table, and use that new student id. 3. Along the same lines, if the course is already in the Courses table, then use that existing Course Id. If the course is not already in the Courses table, then a row for that course must be inserted into the Courses table, and use that new course id. 4. There should be no duplicate student course enrollments, i.e a given student must not be enrolled in the same course twice. For example, Tom must not be enrolled in C# course twice. Answer : To avoid duplicate student course enrollments create a composite primary key on StudentId and CourseId columns in StudentCourses table. In this video we will discuss NTILE function in SQL Server NTILE function 1. Introduced in SQL Server 2005 2. ORDER BY Clause is required 3. PARTITION BY clause is optional 4. Distributes the rows into a specified number of groups 5. If the number of rows is not divisible by number of groups, you may have groups of two different sizes. 6. With any data that your going to import into a database there are problems with the way the data has been entered down to calculations displaying values to too many decimals. To correct this you need to look at cleansing the data. this can be done inside the source data itself. I.e. fix the data within Excel or SQL first. More often than not you cannot change the source data and instead need to "convert" it to the destination. So how is this done you may ask? Well with SSIS you can use two components specifically designed for this job. These are: Data Conversion Derived Column I don't know about you but they sound the same don't they? What if there are 20 or more such filters. This stored procedure can get complex. To make things worse what if we want to specify conditions like AND, OR etc between these search filters. The stored procedure can get extremely large, complicated and difficult to maintain. One way to reduce the complexity is by using dynamic SQL as show below. Depending on for which search filters the user has provided the values on the "Search Page", we build the WHERE clause dynamically at runtime, which can reduce complexity. However, you might hear arguments that dynamic sql is bad both in-terms of security and performance. This is true if the dynamic sql is not properly implemented. From a security standpoint, it may open doors for SQL injection attack and from a performance standpoint, the cached query plans may not be reused. If properly implemented, we will not have these problems with dynamic sql. In our upcoming videos, we will discuss good and bad dynamic sql implementations. For now let's implement a simple example that makes use of dynamic sql. In the example below we are assuming the user has supplied values only for FirstName and LastName search fields. To execute the dynamicl sql we are using system stored procedure sp_executesql. sp_executesql takes two pre-defined parameters and any number of user-defined parameters. @statement - The is the first parameter which is mandatory, and contains the SQL statements to execute @params - This is the second parameter and is optional. This is used to declare parameters specified in @statement The rest of the parameters are the parameters that you declared in @params, and you pass them as you pass parameters to a stored procedure Declare @sql nvarchar(1000) Declare @params nvarchar(1000) Set @sql = 'Select * from Employees where [email protected] and [email protected]' Set @params = '@FirstName nvarchar(100), @LastName nvarchar(100)' Execute sp_executesql @sql, @params, @FirstName='Ben',@LastName='Hoskins' This is just the introduction to dynamic SQL. Recycling Sequence values : When the sequence object has reached it's maximum value, and if you want to restart from the minimum value, set CYCLE option ALTER SEQUENCE [dbo].[SequenceObject] INCREMENT BY 10 MINVALUE 100 MAXVALUE 150 CYCLE At this point, whe the sequence object has reached it's maximum value, and if you ask for the NEXT VALUE, sequence object starts from the minimum value again which in this case is 100. To improve performance, the Sequence object values can be cached using the CACHE option. When the values are cached they are read from the memory instead of from the disk, which improves the performance. When the cache option is specified you can also specify the size of th cache , that is the number of values to cache. The following example, creates the sequence object with 10 values cached. When the 11th value is requested, the next 10 values will be cached again. SELECT Name, TRY_CONVERT(INT, Age) AS Age FROM Employees If you use CONVERT instead of TRY_CONVERT, the query fails with an error. SELECT NAME, CONVERT(INT, Age) AS Age FROM Employees The above query returns the following error Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value 'THIRTY' to data type int. Difference between TRY_PARSE and TRY_CONVERT functions TRY_PARSE can only be used for converting from string to date/time or number data types where as TRY_CONVERT can be used for any general type conversions. In this tutorial we're going to walk you through different options available into which document formats they apply. You can specify the mode text to use. This is applicable for the format system process, job aid, training guide, instructor manual, test document, test case and presentation. Screenshots are included in the document based on the settings for the topic in the topic editor includes screenshots option allows you to over add those settings. The source and destination tables may be in the same database or in different databases and these database can be on the same sql server or in different servers. In Part 18 we discussed, loading xml data into sql server table using sqlbulkcopy. We will be continuing with the example we worked with in Part 18. Step 1 : Create a new database. Name it SourceDB. Execute the following sql script to create Departments and Employees tables, and to populate with data. This means we no longer have to use multiple statements for performing Insert, Update and Delete. With merge statement we require 2 tables 1. Source Table - Contains the changes that needs to be applied to the target table 2. Target Table - The table that require changes (Inserts, Updates and Deletes) The merge statement joins the target table to the source table by using a common column in both the tables. Based on how the rows match up as a result of the join, we can then perform insert, update, and delete on the target table. Merge statement syntax MERGE [TARGET] AS T USING [SOURCE] AS S ON [JOIN_CONDITIONS] WHEN MATCHED THEN [UPDATE STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN [INSERT STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN [DELETE STATEMENT] Example 1 : In the example below, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE are all performed in one statement 1. When matching rows are found, StudentTarget table is UPDATED (i.e WHEN MATCHED) 2. When the rows are present in StudentSource table but not in StudentTarget table those rows are INSERTED into StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET) 3. When the rows are present in StudentTarget table but not in StudentSource table those rows are DELETED from StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE) Create table StudentSource ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentSource values (1, 'Mike') Insert into StudentSource values (2, 'Sara') GO Create table StudentTarget ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentTarget values (1, 'Mike M') Insert into StudentTarget values (3, 'John') GO MERGE INTO StudentTarget AS T USING StudentSource AS S ON T.ID = S.ID WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET T.NAME = S.NAME WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN INSERT (ID, NAME) VALUES(S.ID, S.NAME) WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN DELETE; Please Note : Merge statement should end with a semicolon, otherwise you would get an error stating - A MERGE statement must be terminated by a semi-colon (;) In real time we mostly perform INSERTS and UPDATES. The rows that are present in target table but not in source table are usually not deleted from the target table. Example 2 : In the example below, only INSERT and UPDATE is performed. We are not deleting the rows that are present in the target table but not in the source table. Truncate table StudentSource Truncate table StudentTarget GO Insert into StudentSource values (1, 'Mike') Insert into StudentSource values (2, 'Sara') GO Insert into StudentTarget values (1, 'Mike M') Insert into StudentTarget values (3, 'John') GO MERGE INTO StudentTarget AS T USING StudentSource AS S ON T.ID = S.ID WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET T.NAME = S.NAME WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN INSERT (ID, NAME) VALUES(S.ID, S.NAME);
