Battabox brings you exclusive footage from this festival which attracts tens thousands of Osun worshipers, tourists and people who believe in the traditional religions from all walks of life and different parts of the country. "It's spiritual, because today is a very special day to the people of Oshogbo, It's a sacred day as well, it's like a promise being fulfilled from history.", said Totoola Olayiwola, an Osun Priestess. According to Mr Kolade Olayiwola, an Osun High Priest, before the day of the festival, the oracle needs to be consulted to see if there would be any premonitions for the festival. "If there is any bad or good thing, through the definition, we know what is going on", Said Mr Kolade. But In Yoruba land, the only way of knowing the definition is by tendering a sacrifice "Esu" the messenger of god, for the safe journey of people who are coming for the festival and to waive off every evil. The Yeye Osun tenders this sacrifice to "Esu" herself, accompanied by other servants of Osun. Chickens and goats are slaughtered for sacrifice as the blood is used to appease the gods, Kolanuts are broken to foresee the future, palm oil, salt, pepper , alcohol etc are also some of the ingredients used for sacrifice for the Osun Oshogbo festival. "The traditional should not be abandoned, we shouldn't say because we are Christian or Muslim, we should abandon the traditional, it's not done, because this is home, When you beg Osun to give you something and you have the faith, you will surely get it" Says one woman. The buzz of people coming in for blessings before the main festival is always one of the highlights of the day. **** CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE FOR NEW BATTABOX VIDEOS EVERYDAY: http://battabox.com/subscribe/ ... Annual voodoo festival at the Saut d'Eau waterfalls

Believers of Haiti's most celebrated patron saint, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, travelled to the Saut d'Eau waterfall on Tuesday to pay her tribute and make requests. Worshippers performed voodoo cleansing rituals in the water by stripping off their clothes and using leaves to wash away bad luck and their sins. They also made requests to the saint to improve their lives in various ways. Thousands come to Saut d'Eau every year to honour the virgin, who is said to have appeared on a palm tree in 1847. 62-year-old Lionel Saint Jean said that, after losing his house in Haiti's catastrophic 2010 quake, he asked thesaint for a new one and she granted it. "So, I came this year to thank her for that," Jean said. Voodoo is a mix of African religions and Roman Catholicism and evolved in the 17th century among African slaves, who were forced by French colonisers to practice Roman Catholicism. Many slaves secretly held onto their African religions by using images of Catholic saints to serve as African spirits. Wide shot of Pamungkas smearing blood on his face STORYLINE A renowned Indonesian black magic practitioner performed a voodoo ritual on Thursday in a bid to jinx US President George W. Bush and his entourage during a brief visit to Indonesia next week. The throats of a goat and a small snake were slit, before Voodoo priest Ki Gendeng Pamungkas stabbed a black crow in the chest, then stirred their blood with spices and broccoli before drinking the resulting potion and smearing some on his face. "I don't hate Americans, but I don't like Bush," said Pamungkas, who believed the ritual would succeed, claiming, "the devil is with me today." He said the jinx would send spirits to possess Secret Service personnel guarding Bush and leave them in a trance, leading them into falsely thinking the president was under attack, and causing chaos in Bogor Presidential Palace, where the American leader was scheduled to meet the President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on Monday. Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country, but many still practise animist rituals, including black magic and voodoo, that predate Islam's arrival in the Indonesian archipelago. "Nobody asked me to do this and no interest is behind me. I've seen what he's done in Afghanistan and Iraq," he told reporters after he conducted the gory ritual, about a kilometre from the palace. Bush is deeply unpopular in Indonesia because of the U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Muslim and nationalist groups are calling on the government to cancel the trip. REAL Voodoo Ritual Explained..Happy Halloween! Please Subscribe to us today! Jerry Gondolfo from the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum to discuss Voodoo Religion, Real Hoodoo Attacks, Voodoo Curses and Voodoo Dolls! Louisiana Voodoo, also known as New Orleans Voodoo, describes a set of spiritual folkways which originated from the traditions of the African diaspora. It is a cultural form of the Afro-American religions which developed within the French, Spanish, and Creole speaking African American population of the U.S. state of Louisiana. Voodoo is one of many incarnations of African-based spiritual folkways rooted in West African Dahomeyan Vodun. Voodoo became syncretized with the Catholicism and Francophone culture of south Louisiana as a result of the slave trade. Louisiana Voodoo is often confused with—but is not completely separable from—Haitian Vodou and southern Hoodoo. It differs from Vodou in its emphasis upon Gris-gris, voodoo queens, use of Hoodoo occult paraphernalia, and Li Grand Zombi (snake deity). It was through Louisiana Voodoo that such terms as gris-gris (a Wolof term) and voodoo dolls were introduced into the American lexicon. Haitian Vodou (/ˈvoʊduː/, French: [vodu], also written as Voodoo /ˈvuːduː/; Vodun, or Vodoun /ˈvoʊduːn/, etc.) is a syncretic religion practiced chiefly in Haiti and the Haitian diaspora. Practitioners are called "vodouists" (French: vodouisants [voduisɑ̃]) or "servants of the spirits" (Haitian Creole: sèvitè). Vodouists believe in a distant and unknowable creator god, Bondye. As Bondye does not intercede in human affairs, vodouists direct their worship toward spirits subservient to Bondye, called loa.Every loa is responsible for a particular aspect of life, with the dynamic and changing personalities of each loa reflecting the many possibilities inherent to the aspects of life over which they preside. In order to navigate daily life, vodouists cultivate personal relationships with the loa through the presentation of offerings, the creation of personal altars and devotional objects, and participation in elaborate ceremonies of music, dance, and spirit possession

Haiti Vodou: Ritual Music From The First Black Republic [CD 1]

45:23
Haiti Vodou: 1937-1962 Folk Trance Possession (Ritual Music from the First Black Republic) Fremeaux Heritage, FA5626, 3XCD, France. Release Date: 2 Feb. 2016. Release: A fascinating account of the mystic Afro-Haitian rituals inherited from the days of slavery. With these songs, drums and trances of possessed initiates, vodou deities were called upon in authentic ceremonies considered by French colonists as the work of the Devil. This complex religion inspired fi ctional zombies and magic, united slaves and spurred the fi ght for Haiti’s independence as the fi rst black republic in history. Thousands of Haitian slaves deported to Louisiana and Cuba spread this voodoo legacy throughout North America, where it became one of the deep roots of jazz (and then rock and funk) and Afro-Cuban musics. In this companion- set to “Jamaica Folk-Trance-Possession”, Bruno Blum invokes Papa Legba, the spirit of communication, and deciphers some rare sound-documents, the best of the recordings devoted to voodoo: the supreme key to Afro-American music forms. -- Patrick FRÉMEAUX Tracklist: CD 1 01 - The Saul Polinice Louis Et Cicéron Marseille Group - Danbala Wedo Tokan Koulev 00:00 02 - Francilia - Ayizan Belekounde 01:24 03 - Hibbert Lena - La Famille Li Fai CA (Ibo Dance Song) 02:39 04 - Borderau Libera - Cote Yo Cote Yo (Mais Dance Song) 04:28 05 - Lafrance Belvue - Ogoun BalinDJo (Invocation) 05:35 06 - Lafrance Belvue - Ezilie Wedo (Invocation) 07:04 07 - Vodou Priest - Spirit Conversation 8:22 08 - Lafrance Belvue - Moundongue Oh Ye Ye Ye (Moundongue Dance Song) 10:21 09 - François Aleanne - Ou Pas We'm Innocent (Secular Song) 12:11 10 - Lafrance Belvue - General Brise (Kita Dance Song) 13:11 11 - Inconnu - Vodoun Dance (Three Drums) 14:58 12 - Inconnu - Petro Dance (Two Drums) 17:48 13 - Inconnu - Quitta Dance (Two Drums) 19:02 14 - Inconnu - Baboule Dance (Three Drums) 20:26 15 - Inconnu - Congo Payette Dance (Three Drums) 21:39 16 - Inconnu - Congo Larose Dance (Three Drums) 22:54 17 - Inconnu - Ganbos (Bamboo Stamping Tubes Ogan) 24:23 18 - Inconnu - Vaccines (Bamboo Trumpets Sticks) 26:32 19 - Inconnu - Bumba Dance (Two Drums) 27:13 20 - Inconnu - Ibo Dance (Three Drums Ogan) 29:54 21 - Inconnu - Ce Moin Ayida (Zepaule Dance) 33:22 22 - Inconnu - Ayida Deesse Arc En Ciel (Mais Dance) 35:28 23 - Inconnu - Ayida Pas Nan Betise (Petro Dance) 37:36 24 - Inconnu - Mambo Ayida (Congo Dance) 40:03 25 - Inconnu - Legba Aguator (Nago Dance) 41:55 Total:45:09

Haitian Death Ritual

01:52
In a village just outside Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti, a young woman has died. Everyone will come together to mourn. The Feast of Death is announced. Women are responsible for preparing coffee for everyone to help them stay awake during their vigil of the deceased woman. The night before the funeral, chants and dances are performed to help the soul of the woman return to her ancestors. The following morning, everyone dresses in their best clothes to attend the funeral. The grief of the dead woman’s husband is clear to see. The funeral cortege passes through the village several times: this is to confuse the soul of the deceased woman so she will not know the way back home and disturb her family.

25 True Things You May Not Know About Voodoo

08:11
Few things conjure up more thoughts of spells and ritualistic ceremonies than Voodoo. The history of Voodoo has its roots in West Africa, transferring to the Americas via the slave trade. But something that has become clear to us is there are two kinds of voodoo: the real kind and the Hollywood kind. Hollywood has, in typical fashion, exaggerated various parts of the story to sell more movies; it has mixed various religious traditions and has overstated (or wrongly attributed) various practices such as the making of dolls and dark arts. Even the recent Disney movie "The Princess and the Frog" used the character of Dr. Facilier as a black magic trickster and the character of Mama Odie (the "Voodoo Queen of the Bayou", a reference to legendary Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau) as an example of a positive magical conjurer. Voodoo is, in fact, a community based religion which recognizes one supreme being and various lesser spirits. (Sound familiar?) Voodooists emphasize a moral code and refrain from hurting others. They are also known for their energy-filled drum and dance ceremonies. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Papa Legba Haitian Meditation Music ( Very Powerful )

03:49
Papa Legba Meditation Music Papa Legba Ritual Meditation Music Papa Legba is a mighty Loa (God) from the New Orleans and Haitian Vodou Traditions. He is seen as an elderly black man with a cane, wearing a straw hat and either smoking a pipe or sprinkling water upon the ground. He is sometimes accompanied by a black dog or a rooster. His colors are black and red and his number is 3. His day of the week is Monday and he is associated with St. Lazarus and St. Peter. Papa Legba governs over choice and the paths that we all walk. He presents us with opportunities and also tests our progress with challenges as we travel through earth life. This responsibility has given him the title of being the ultimate trickster god. He challenges us to step out of ourselves and to examine the habits and beliefs that we identify with. The choice is to either examine our lives or continue to fail the tests that Papa Legba sends to us over and over again. To Papa Legba, choice is of the utmost importance for it is choice that displays the maturity of the heart and mind. Papa Legba is one of the very oldest Loa and has been around since the beginning of time. He has seen everything which is why he is the Master Story Teller and the keeper of man’s history. He is like the Kemetic/Egyptian record keeping God Tehuti in this light for he has an unimaginable amount of data stored in his memory. He is the griot with the tales of heroes and the origins of all things. He can speak these stories to anyone on the planet for he is King of all linguists and therefore knows all languages. 6-year-old Frantzcia Saintil will be scarred for life. She suffered second- and third-degree burns over 25% of her body, including her face, torso and legs. However, this was no accident. Frantzcia Saintil was the victim of a voodoo ritual perpetrated on her by her own mother, Marie Lauradin, 29 and her grandmother, Sylvenie Thessier, 70. Meet Brooklyn's Voodou Queen: Edeline St. Armand

06:51
Watch more on VICE here: http://www.vice.com/devilsduemovie Being possessed, it turns out, is exhausting work. Just ask Mambo Edeline St. Armand. While popular culture portrays Vodou as full of curses and sticking pins into little dolls, the religion has in fact played a central role in Haitian cultural identity since the country's birth, a result of the New World's first and only successful slave rebellion. Since Brooklyn is home to the largest Haitian population outside of Haiti, we sent Thomas Morton into our own backyard to witness the realities of being possessed by Vodou's multitude of rowdy, rum-thirsty spirits. Plaine Du Nord, Haiti - July 2009 - Haitian Vodou

05:09
A first-hand glimpse at Haiti's infamous Plaine Du Nord Vodou ceremony. Many people claim that participants are often demon possessed. You can even hear one man say that a couple of times in this video. After visiting this event, it was easier to see why outsiders are quick to label such activity as "demonic" or "evil." There were lots of unique customs and plenty of live animal sacrifices. Blood was everywhere along the ground. For my part, I was not convinced of any demonic possession at this particular event. You should watch and decide for yourself.

WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT The following events as depicted, including animal sacrifice, occurred among a small, specific group of Vodouisants in a remote region of Haiti. Not all current practitioners of Vodou include the ritual of sacrifice in their ceremonies or engage (or follow) such intense practices as shown in this film." BACKGROUND: Vodou has continued to be practiced by over 50% of the population in Haiti, often hiding their faith among various sects of Christianity, but still honoring the religion of their African ancestors. Once a year, an isolated segment of Haitians make a pilgrimage to a sacred mountain in the interior of Haiti to find strength in the religion of their ancestors.
