Juxtapoz Presents: A Studio Visit with Kennedy Yanko
On the eve of taking part in the group show, Alchemy, at BRIC House in Brooklyn on June 27, 2018, Chop em' Down Films and Juxtapoz visited the studio of Kennedy Yanko. Kennedy Yanko (b. 1988, St. Louis, MO) is an artist whose practice explores the primacy of the senses as a means to gain knowledge and disrupt immediate associations. Yanko grounds herself in a physical practice. She says, "I've always understood life through movement and my senses; I have to create something physically in order to truly understand it intellectually." Most recently, her three dimensional sculptural paintings have served as the foundations for immersive experiences in physical spaces. For four years, Yanko alternated between a residency at The Living Theater in New York — one of the first and arguably the most influential experimental theater troupes in the U.S. — while dedicating herself to her studio practice in St. Louis. Throughout this period, her work was showcased in a trio of solo exhibitions in St. Louis (2009’s “Wu-Wei,” 2010’s “Paroxysm,” and 2012’s “Permutation”) that coincided with major developments in Yanko’s experiments in painting. In 2017, Yanko participated in the Derrick Adams-curated show at the Jenkins Johnson Project Space, "Hidden in Plain Sight," and created a custom installation for PULSE Contemporary Art Fair at Art Basel Miami. So far in 2018, she's shown work with VOLTA NY as part of Mickalene Thomas and Racquel Chevremont's curated section, and will be showing with the Caroline A. Feuerman Sculpture Foundation at Mana Contemporary this April. This summer, Yanko will complete a large-scale installation for BRIC Arts in downtown Brooklyn, and in the fall, she'll have a solo show with Leyendecker Galeria. https://www.bricartsmedia.org/art-exhibitions/alchemy https://kennedyyanko.com/feel-for-exhibition/ https://www.instagram.com/chopemdownfilms/

Juxtapoz Magazine @ Urban Nation, Berlin, Opening Party 2017
In September 2017, Juxtapoz Magazine celebrated the grand opening of the Urban Nation Museum in Berlin, Germany. To kick off the opening, Juxtapoz and the artist Grotesk donated the "Juxtapoz Newsstand" to the museum as a piece of graffiti and street art history from the magazine that has been covering the scene for over two decades. During opening week, we chatted with street art and graffiti legends Blek le Rat and Martha Cooper about the widespread impact that the culture has had around the world, and how they have seen this grassroots movement become an international phenomenon. Video filmed and directed by Fifth Wall TV (www.youtube.com/user/FifthWallTv) Music by Aesop Rock and Cosimo Fogg Thank you to everyone at Urban Nation for the support!

Juxtapoz Presents: A Studio Visit with Deedee Cheriel
Ahead of her upcoming show at Merry Karnowski Gallery in Los Angeles this Saturday, we stopped by Deedee Cheriel's studio for a little visit! Deedee Cheriel transforms personal experience into folklore through an amalgam of influences both personal and universal. East Indian Art, spirituality, environmentalism, ritual, and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest all inform the artist's work and give context to often-personal narratives. Cheriel’s latest body of work, In Search For More Than Another Shiny Object, radiates a profound philosophical sense of self-awareness and hopefulness. The influence of music and song support themes of light, love and guardianship while the intimacy between Cheriel’s signature anthropomorphic characters engenders a sense of communal nurturing. The quest for more than a shiny object implies a much-needed social shift, and is a reflective of a personal and metaphorically balanced approach to life.

Juxtapoz x Adobe Present: Jeremy Fish "Yesterdays and Tomorrows" (Part 1)
San Francisco artist Jeremy Fish has played a major role not only in Juxtapoz's growth over the last two decades, but also in the growing movement of artists who grew up in skateboarding and who have formed successful careers in exhibiting art. Not only that, but we consider Fish a friend. He's a two-time Juxtapoz cover artist, and we look forward to all his immersive paintings and explorations into narrative-based exhibitions. For the next month on Juxtapoz.com, we will be documenting the process of Jeremy Fish and his friends as he builds his animated experience through a collaborative process on Adobe Creative Cloud and reminisces on being a working artist these last 20 years. And as we will find out, Jeremy will learn a few new tricks along the way. This is part 1 in a six-part video-documentary series. For more information, visit http://j.mp/1yjMUP7

Inside INSA's London Studio with Juxtapoz Magazine
A never before seen video capture of graffiti and fine artist INSA's London studio. This was recorded during our interview with the artist for an article featured on the Juxtapoz Magazine September subscriber cover. "His Southeast London studio views more like the workshop of sexy elves than the creative base of a highly sought after contemporary artist. Coffee cups litter a worktable alongside spray cans and markers. Sawdust lines the floor, high heel prototypes perch next to staple guns and rows of pornographic lighters suggest an in-progress installation. A custom lowrider bike hangs from a wall opposing a four-foot square mechanical spinning lightbox with gold and chrome mirrored panels featuring Darlene from Ice-T's 1988 album Power." --Katie Zuppann, Juxtapoz Magazine September 2010 Song: "I'm Your Pusher" by Ice-T from the album 'Power' www.juxtapoz.com www.insaland.com

"Juxtapoz x Superflat" curated by Takashi Murakami and Evan Pricco
[Video by Matthew Williams] "Juxtapoz x Superflat" is a manifesto for new creative practices that can no longer be adequately described by the traditional categories of art and production. Presenting the work of more than 30 artists from Japan, China, Korea, Europe and the United States this remarkable exhibition offers a unique insight into contemporary art and its place in cultural life. Juxtapoz x Superflat was conceived by the renowned Japanese artist Takashi Murakami and co-curated with Evan Pricco, Editor-in-Chief of Juxtapoz Art & Culture, a legendary San Francisco-based magazine committed to contemporary art, design, fashion and graffiti. They conceived the exhibition as a survey of the most exciting visual art to emerge in recent years, with a heavy emphasis on artists who operate outside of the central hubs of the global art world. Expanding upon Murakami and Juxtapoz magazine’s interest in flattening high and low cultures, this exhibition includes work by artists whose practice has been shaped by a variety of sub-cultures including skate, surf, graffiti, street art, comics, design, illustration, painting, and digital and traditional arts. Juxtapoz x Superflat includes work by Chiho Aoshima, Urs Fischer, Kim Jung Gi, Kazunori Hamana, Trenton Doyle Hancock, John Hathway, Todd James, James Jean, Friedrich Kunath, Austin Lee, Christian Rex van Minnen, Rebecca Morgan, Takashi Murakami, Kazumi Nakamura, Elisabeth Higgins O’Connor, Otani Workshop, Paco Pomet, Parra, Erin M. Riley, Mark Ryden, David Shrigley, Devin Troy Strother, Katsuya Terada, Toilet Paper Magazine, Yuji Ueda, Yuji Ueno, Sage Vaughn, Ben Venom, He Xiangyu and Zoer & Velvet.

Exhibition merges cars with underground art culture
(29 Oct 2018) LEADIN: A new exhibition in Los Angeles is celebrating the US cult of custom cars. 'Auto-Didactic: The Juxtapoz School' features art, fashion and vehicles that represent the custom culture of the hot rod era that began in Southern California in the 1960s.   STORYLINE: A colourful car exhibition with a difference is turning heads at the world renowned Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. 'Auto-Didactic: The Juxtapoz School' is intersecting cars and underground art. The work of more than 50 artists accompanies the car display to create an eclectic display that examines the works of Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine. The magazine was created in 1994 by a group of artists and collectors, including Robert Williams, C.R. Stecyk, Greg Escalante, and Eric Swenson, to define and celebrate urban alternative and underground contemporary art. This exhibit looks at the impact of the art and culture magazine and the Southern Californian 'Kustom Kulture' phenomenon -  which is adapting cars, hot rods, surfboards, as well as urban and underground art. It includes works, ranging from sculpture and paintings to instruments and illustrations, from key artists such as Von Dutch and Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. C.R. Stecyk is the exhibition co-creator: "This exhibit is a compendium of art, be it sculpture, painting, automotive art, modified automobiles and kind of exhales the inner relationship of art culture and commentary between the two as propelled by motorized mechanized transport." Joseph Harper, co-curator, art historian and Assistant Curator at Petersen Automotive Museum says the museum sees cars beyond their purpose and highlights them. "Juxtapoz Magazine was founded in 1994 and it came out of an exhibit that happened here in Southern California called Kustom Kulture. Kustom Kulture is a movement that goes back to the 1960's where hot-rod culture sort of predominated and figures like Von Dutch or Ed "Big Daddy" Roth really became household names. Out of that exhibition many of the artists and people who organized it later started Juxtapoz magazine and we are now here 25 years after that founding along with the 25th anniversary of the Petersen Automotive Museum. We really wanted to explore where that connection has gone over the last quarter century," says Harper. The exhibition highlights notable custom cars including, a 1932 Ford Roadster named "Prickly Heat" that was restored in 2001. It is owned by Robert Williams, one of the founders of Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine. The car is widely considered the first definitive hot rod. Painted in shocking purple and chartreuse. "The Orbitron" by "Big Daddy" Roth was created in 1964. This fiberglass car has the aesthetic of the 1960s with asymmetrical design and bubble top. It was discovered in 2007 in Juarez, Mexico outside a bookstore. Stecyk says it went through extensive restoration. This 1970 Kenford Truck is by Von Dutch, well known for his creative and abstract designs. The truck which Dutch owned was crated by grafting a 1947 Kenworth cab to a 1956 Ford chassis. It was featured in the first issue of Juxtapoz as part of a feature article on him. The 1959 Cadillac titled "The New and Improved Ultima Suprema Deluxe 2012" by Kenny Scharf is a show stopper. It features pop culture icons, cartoon characters and futuristic scenes. It has creatures floating among space-age cultural symbols and outer worldly found objects, pop culture references and a retro-future timeline.
