Leadership styles
There is never a one-size-fits-all leadership style for every business – all companies operate differently and certain traits will be more successful in some environments than others. However, having a thorough understanding of various leadership styles enables senior executives to not only adopt the correct characteristics for themselves, but also choose better managers throughout the organisation. Here is a list of nine common leadership styles and a brief summary of their advantages and disadvantages. Transformational leadership Often considered among the most desirable employees, people who show transformational leadership typically inspire staff through effective communication and by creating an environment of intellectual stimulation. However, these individuals are often blue-sky thinkers and may require more detail-oriented managers to successfully implement their strategic visions. For more information on transformational leadership traits, please click here. Transactional leadership Transactional leadership is focused on group organisation, establishing a clear chain of command and implementing a carrot-and-stick approach to management activities. It is considered transactional because leaders offer an exchange; they reward good performances, while punishing bad practice. While this can be an effective way of completing short-term tasks, employees are unlikely to reach their full creative potential in such conditions. Servant leadership People who practice servant leadership prefer power-sharing models of authority, prioritising the needs of their team and encouraging collective decision-making. Research by Catalyst has claimed this style, described as altruistic leadership by the company, can improve diversity and boost morale. However, detractors suggest servant leaders lack authority and suffer a conflict of interest by putting their employees ahead of business objectives. Autocratic leadership A more extreme version of transactional leadership, autocratic leaders have significant control over staff and rarely consider worker suggestions or share power. Ruling with an iron fist is rarely appreciated by staff, which can lead to high turnover and absenteeism. There can also be a lack of creativity due to strategic direction coming from a single individual. This leadership style is best suited to environments where jobs are fairly routine or require limited skills. It is also common in military organisations. Laissez-faire leadership More commonly used to describe economic environments, laissez-faire literally means “let them do” in French. This is typically translated to “let it be”. As such, laissez-faire leaders are characterised by their hands-off approach, allowing employees to get on with tasks as they see fit. This can be effective in creative jobs or workplaces where employees are very experienced. However, it is important that leaders monitor performance and effectively communicate expectations to prevent work standards slipping. Democratic leadership Also known as participative leadership, this style – as the name suggests – means leaders often ask for input from team members before making a final decision. Workers usually report higher levels of job satisfaction in these environments and the company can benefit from better creativity. On the downside, the democratic process is normally slower and may not function well in workplaces where quick decision-making is crucial. Bureaucratic leadership Bureaucratic leadership models are most often implemented in highly regulated or administrative environments, where adherence to the rules and a defined hierarchy are important. These leaders ensure people follow the rules and carry out tasks by the book. Naturally, this works well in certain roles – such as health and safety – but can stifle innovation and creativity in more agile, fast-paced companies.

Leadership style and continuous improvement
Your Leadership Style might be holding back Continuous Improvement in your Organization Most leaders want continuous improvement to take place in their organization. But do you ever stop and question your own leadership style and whether it promotes or hinders people from making improvements? Last week I attended the Salon sur les Meilleures Pratiques d’Affaires (https://www.qualite.qc.ca/salon-mpa) (Best Business Practices) organized by le Movement Québecois de la Qualité. The well attended trade show and conference was full of companies showcasing examples of their continuous improvement successes as well as vendors of all types of quality programs, consulting services and training courses. What was very clear from those promoting best practices was the importance of leaders adapting a participative leadership style. All the best practices for assuring quality standards and high performance are based on employee participation. This translates into empowered, autonomous employees and teams. So what is a participative leadership style and how to develop it? It means involving people in decision making and coming to consensus on decisions that employees are responsible for implementing. It means establishing expectations for performance and productivity and empowering teams to work together and solve problems on their own to continuously improve their work. It means listening and giving feedback but not telling. It means coaching people rather than ordering or ignoring. Participative leadership is just one style. On one end is autocratic leadership and the opposite end is democratic. There are times you must be autocratic in your style. For example the fire chief practices participative leadership when there is no fire. But when there is a fire he becomes the director and shouts orders. However, everyone accepts this because they understand the situation and trust the leader. They know this style is required under the circumstance. The same is true in business. Sometimes you need to practice participate leadership and at other times autocratic. But to promote teamwork and continuous improvement you need to adapt a participative style most of the time. This requires a shift in thinking and behaviour. The fundamental behaviors for the leader to put into practice to be a participative leader are: 1. Maintain and grow the self-esteem of employees 2. Listen and respond with empathy 3. Ask for help to solve problems 4. Provide support without removing responsibility There fundamentals are well explained in the narrative book Zapp! The Lightning of Empowerment (http://www.amazon.ca/Zapp-The-Lightning-Empowerment-Productivity/dp/0449002829). In fact we use this book as part of our Style of Leadership and Team Development (http://www.optimusperformance.ca/your-leadership-style-might-be-holding-back-continuous-improvement-in-your-organization-2/) training program for leaders. Leaders must strike a balance between being and doing. In other words before doing the practices associated with quality programs and continuous improvement initiatives, they must start putting into practice the behaviors that foster trust, openness and engagement. The key is to start step by step. Develop an understanding by reading Zapp or get some training in interpersonal behavior skills aimed at coaching people and developing a participative leadership style. Hold problem solving meetings at the management level to eliminate problems that cause you to be fighting fires too often. If you can shift more time to plan, set goals, coach people etc. you will start becoming a participative leader. Our leadership styles and team development training program provides a foundation for developing the core competencies of becoming a participative leader and stimulating teamwork. Innovation Webinar Leadership & Culture for a sustainable business
Leadership and culture are at the heart of sustainable success of organisations Research shows and experience tells us that leadership style, organizational culture and the employee experience are at the core of your customer experience and business performance. These play a key role in strategy execution, productivity, profitability, innovation, customer engagement, quality of products or services, long term growth, sustainability, employee engagement and team performance. The challenge is, what has helped many organisations achieve ‘success’ to date is no longer the way of the future. We have two major forces to contend with including, the unprecedented pace of change faced by companies in today’s world and an ever-growing human desire to attain purpose, individual growth, positive impact and greater connection within organizations. In this webinar, Joanna will share how the organisational landscape is shifting in response to the changing needs and desires of people, and discuss the levers that need to be balanced in working toward building a high performing and engaged team that contributes to the sustainable success of a business.

The connections between organisational culture, leadership style...
https://www.oxford-review.com/downloads/connections-organisational-culture-leadership-style-organisational-learning-innovation-capability/ An interesting and fairly large – scale study has just been published in the Chinese Language Journal of Quality that conducts a form of factor analysis called Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) on data from 398 organisations. The study looked at the level of influence the following factors have on each other: 1.Organisational culture 2.Leadership style and 3.Organisational learning, and how they affect innovation capability and performance within organisations. Findings The study found that: The culture of an organisation significantly impacts on and predicts its performance. The culture of an organisation has a positive impact on performance when it promotes and rewards innovation and creativity. Leadership style has no direct impact on an organisation’s innovation capability. There is a significant link between the ability of the organisation to learn and unlearn (reversal learning) and its performance. That the link between an organisation’s ability to learn and unlearn and the performance of the organisation is strongly associated with its innovation capability.

Leadership Styles Pt1 - Business Leadership Development
http://www.leadershipmadesimple.com/ When we do management and leadership development, we like to invite the managers involved, as well as employee leaders, to look at extremes of leadership styles. The process also distinguishes somewhat between management and leadership. Please rate and comment this video. Give us feedback on its value. Have to have it? Subscribe! Websites to check out: http://www.leadershipmadesimple.com http://www.enleadership.com http://www.facebook.com/edoakley http://www.twitter.com/edoakley History of Enlightened Leadership Solutions The best place to begin is where we got our name. The Allied Forces had just won a quick and decisive victory in the first Gulf War. The efficiency and the effectiveness of the forces were notable. One of our principals was watching CNN interview one of the Generals in Saudi Arabia . The General who shared his observations and analysis on why the Allied Forces were so successful commented: The chain of command has empowered the armed forces in the field to get the job done. Decisions are being made at the battle front, not by the brass in Washington . Now thats enlightened leadership. Three years later, the book was published by Simon & Schuster. The book is in its 31st printing and has sold over 230,000 copies worldwide. What weve learned is a profound demonstration about the power of human capital, and unleashing that power is at the very core of our work. Philosophy of Enlightened Leadership Solutions We believe that people are the cornerstone to success. People are the single biggest opportunity to realize performance gains without expending or investing in additional resources. Attitude, alignment, communication, focus and commitment are critical differentiators between those who thrive and those who just survive. We consistently find that individuals, teams, and organizations who execute these areas well, out-perform those who may have more technical knowledge or talent. We believe that what makes people tick doesnt change much from company to company. The behavior that is driven by management philosophy, culture, process, systems, procedures, and structure is unique to each organization. Research has concluded that cultural alignment is a significant factor behind failed mergers and executive retention. Much of the knowledge we have gained over the years will impact individual performance. Organizational performance is further dependent on what, how, and when that knowledge is applied to those unique organizational factors. We also believe that innovation and knowledge transference is critical and that the greatest measure of our success is how fast organizations integrate and apply the capabilities that we initially provide them. Our goal is to create independence, not dependence on us for success. We are a catalyst and guide for change, not the holder of the process. The more organizations are accountable for success, the greater and more sustaining the performance improvements. Developing that accountability is an important part of our work. 1730: Why Product Leadership Is Critical To Building An Innovative Company And Team
Richard Banfield is the CEO and co-founder of Fresh Tilled Soil, a leading Product User Experience Design Firm in Boston, and the co-author of the best selling book, Product Leadership: How Top Product Leaders Launch Great Products And Build Successful Teams. We dig deep into why product leadership is so important, how to bring that skill to your work, building fast innovation cycles, determining the signals from the noise, and driving good decision making. Key Takeaways: [1:21] You need a good leader to have a successful product. Leaders must be able to deliver and measure value to their customer. Find out what’s different in the role of a product manager and a product leader. You must listen to the customer and seek out negative feedback. [6:12] Richard shares advice so that you can be less emotional and more objective about feedback. It’s like any skill that requires effort. You have to get out there and practice it! [8:17] Is this feedback I can do something about? Find out about gravity problems and how to address them. [9:29] Prototypes are more important than PowerPoints. Prototypes should pose a question that generates an answer for you. [12:43] Why is product leadership so relevant today? [15:44] Modern companies with any real desire to succeed will actively pursue the voice of the customer. Product managers aid in soliciting the customer's voice. [16:33] How does a company build and nurture high-performing teams to achieve success? First, the teams must be cross-functional teams that represent all units within the organization. Second the teams must be co-located, connected, and working with each other. Third, autonomous; they must have the training and coaching to make good decisions. [18:49] People must be taught to make good decisions. However, not every decision will be good. Don’t go for the big reveal. Work in a quick microcycle to deliver value, and fix problems along the way. Innovate, tweak, fix, and revolve as you move through the process. [20:47] Richard believes the innovation team should be coaching and training everyone else how to think within the company. [23:42] Successful product companies ship a lot of experiences and deliver hIgh rates of  value, around 5-10 experiences a month. [24:42] Richard talks about some “aha” moments that he experienced while writing his book, Product Leadership. It’s OK to say, “I don’t know.” [26:33] How does one divide the signal from the noise? Leadership must paint a clear vision for everyone, and explain why it’s meaningful, and how to get there. [29:29] How can you identify product leadership? It needs to be obvious by intention. You need to get people on board, and then organize the effort. Leaders need to possess  empathy, organize and present well, and have the energy to go and perform every single day. [32:06] Product leadership is one of the keys to making sure innovation is happening.  All aspects of the business must be part of innovation. [33:44] Richard shares an analogy of the doctor making a house call to the crazy cat lady. Go and observe the customers in action and live in their shoes. Walk through the manure. [38:24] Why is it necessary to be a lifelong learner? {40:00] Connect with Richard on Twitter or on Richard’s homepage. Purchase Richard’s book on Amazon.
