Mastering Style: The Learning and Teaching of Writing

The Harvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching (HILT), in collaboration with the Harvard Writers at Work Lecture Series, welcomed Professor Steven Pinker and Visiting Professor Jill Abramson on December 9th, 2014 in a talk at Harvard titled, "Mastering Style: The Learning and Teaching of Writing." The discussion, inspired by the recent publication of Professor Pinker’s book, The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person’s Guide to Writing in the 21st Century, was focused on the teaching and learning of writing, associated challenges, and practical recommendations. The starting point of effective writing, Pinker shared, is for the author to determine a mental model of the communication scenario between the writer and the reader. Pinker shared the “classic style” theory of interpreting writer/reader communication from literary scholars Francis-Noel Thomas and Mark Turner. Classic style aims to help the reader see objective reality, which can be accomplished by focusing on the thing being shown and not on the activity of studying it, as well as by avoiding clichés and “metaconcepts” (concepts about concepts), among other recommendations. Academic writing, in contrast, is frequently written in postmodern or self-conscious style, one that includes apologizing and hedging.

My name is Emma, and in today's video I'm going to teach you something very important for if you're taking any type of test that has a writing component. So, if you are taking the IELTS, the TOEFL, the CELPIP, even just a university test, it can be any type of test, but if you're asked to write something like an essay or a paragraph, this video is for you. Okay? So I'm going to teach you a very important skill that will help improve your marks when it comes to writing on tests. So, let's get started. So, I have here an essay question. This question is actually... I've seen it on the IELTS. You know, you have similar types of questions on the TOEFL, sometimes in university. The question is this: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country. Do you agree or disagree?" Or maybe: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" So, this is an example of a question you might be asked. Now, a problem a lot of students have is in their answer to this question. They see this, and they think: "Okay, education is the most important factor in the development of a country, yes, I agree." So then they... Or: "I disagree", and they start writing. And what do they write? Usually the very first thing students will write is this: "I agree that education is the single most important factor in the development of a country because..." So, what is the problem with this? Is there any problem to start off your essay with something like this, or to start off your answer? There's a big problem. So I want you to take a moment and think: "What could be the problem with starting your essay off with this sentence?" Okay, well, if you noticed, you have here the word: "education, education, is, is, the single most important, most important factor". If you notice, these are the same. They're the exact same, except for: "I agree that" and "because". The student, here, has used the exact same wording that is in the question. So, if you do this on the IELTS-and many students do this, same with on the TOEFL-you actually will lose marks, and same with in university, because you're not showing your abilities; you're just copying what somebody else has said or what the essay question is. So, in this video, I'm going to show you first off... First off, I'm going to tell you: Don't do this, don't copy. And I'm going to teach you ways in order to improve yourself and your answer by changing this wording. How can you change your introduction so it's different than what the question is? Okay? So, let's look at how to make these changes. Okay, so what we are going to do in order to change the question into a proper answer that doesn't just copy the question, is we are going to paraphrase. So, the word here is: "paraphrase". This might be a new word for you. What does it mean to paraphrase something? Well, when we paraphrase, it means we take a sentence that, you know... We take somebody else's sentence and we change it into our own words. Okay? So, we change the words of a sentence, we also change maybe the sentence structure, but we keep all the same meaning. Okay? So, the meaning from the sentence you copy, it stays the same, same meaning, but different words and different sentence structure. Okay? So it's in your words, but this other person's meaning. So, we are going to paraphrase this example of a question into our own words. So, first we're going to look at how to do that using vocabulary and synonyms. So, we have here the same question: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country." How can we put this into new words or our own words that keep the same meaning? Well, we can use synonyms. So, this might be a new word for you, too. A "synonym". "Synonyms" are words that have the same meaning, but are different words.

Today's lesson is an IELTS lesson, so as usual, I'll be speaking a little bit faster than normal, give you a little bit of listening practice. And today we're going to look at specifically the essay types, the types of essays you're going to have to come across for those of you taking the IELTS test in the writing section task two, the independent essay. I'm going to talk about the types of essays, and a very general idea, a very general discussion about how to approach, generally again, the essay. I want to make... Talk about templates, but I'll do that a little bit later. So first of all, the main thing to remember, you have essentially three types of essays that you're going to come across on the IELTS writing test. You're going to have an essay that asks for an opinion, you're going to have an essay that does not ask for an opinion, and then you're going to have a hybrid, you're going to have a combination of the two. Okay? So first let's go over the types of questions you might see that ask for an opinion. Now, it's very important to recognize that not all of you... Sorry, not all of the questions are going to be specifically mentioning the word: "opinion", or "think", or "believe", but you still have to recognize. So: "Do you agree or disagree with whatever has been mentioned before?" or whatever is written there. "Do you agree or disagree?" Take a side. "I agree with this because", reasons. "I disagree because", reasons. And similarly: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" A quick word about "to what extent", I personally recommend completely, totally, fully agree with whatever you agree with because it's a much easier essay to write. If you say: "I somewhat agree", then you have to look at both sides and tell me what you agree with, what you disagree with. If you say: "I completely agree with this idea", then you only have to focus on that idea. It's much easier. "Do you think" something, so this is a very direct question about your opinion. "What do you think about this?" or "What do you think are the causes of", "What do you think are the main issues or problems?" Now: "Do the benefits outweigh the drawbacks", or: "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" As soon as you see, here, the word: "Do", it's a yes/no question, you have to say yes or no, and we're going to talk about yes/no questions. But this word: "outweigh"... "Are there more drawbacks or are there more benefits?" This is an opinion question. You decide if there are more drawbacks or opinions. "Which is better: This situation or this situation?" Okay? "Is it more important to do this or to do that?" So, again, these are all yes/no... This is a choice question because you have the "better", you have the comparative. And, again, you have this, plus the yes/no. So as soon as it's a yes/no question, it's an opinion question. Make sure that you answer very specifically yes or no, this side or this side, and say why you think so. Support your opinion. And yes/no, if a question begins with: "Should some... Should somebody do something?", "Should this be done?", "Do... Do people need to do this?" for example. Excuse me. Any yes/no question is asking for an opinion. Okay? Make sure that you give an opinion, make sure that you support that opinion. Okay, now, let's go on to the non-opinion questions. "Discuss", so they're going to give you two attitudes, or two views, or two approaches to something. They say: "Discuss both views. Discuss both attitudes." This is not asking for your opinion. So, one thing, it's a general rule of thumb, don't always apply it because some of you don't like to use the word "I", but if the question has a "you", the answer can, and in most cases should, have an "I". Okay? You don't have to use the personal pronoun. It's not wrong to. A lot of people are afraid, they think academic essays shouldn't use "I". Totally okay, recommended for a lot of people. If you can't make your views clear without using the "I", then use the "I". Here, don't use the "I".

Here we are with a writing lesson. We are looking at the skill of showing, not telling, and it's going to transform your writing as long as you put it into practice afterwards. "Show, not tell. What's he talking about?" When we're writing we want to avoid simple statements that don't really add any description or flavour. For example: "The man was stressed." [Snores] Boring. Instead, I want you to paint a picture, I really want you to describe the man is stressed without telling me that he is. So how can you do that? We're kind of trying to avoid this word, and describe it instead. So what's he doing? "The man was fidgeting. Ah, he's fidgeting. He's so stressed, he can't sort of stay still. And biting his nails." Okay? So pick out a couple of details that show how the person was. Next one: "The room was messy." Again, it's a simple, simple sentence. It's just one sort of main clause and it's not very interesting. Much better to describe the items in the room that make it messy. For example: "There was a leftover pizza, dirty clothes were strewn"... I'll write that word for you. That means they were covering the floor. "...and there were dirty plates and cups". Okay? These details give us the idea that it is messy. Example three: "The woman was confident." Okay, but it would be much more effective if you described how she was confident. So, how does she move? How do other people react to her? "She strode", that means she walked, but with purpose. Okay? So I've picked an interesting verb. "She strode into the room, and everyone turned their heads to notice her." Okay? Much clearer, more vivid idea of confidence than just saying she was confident. Example four: "The boy was careful." Tell us how he was careful. "He placed his favourite magazine in the top drawer of his cabinet." Okay? So we need to say exactly what he is placing, the object there has been missed out. "He placed"... There's no room for me to write it. You get the idea, he places his favourite book or magazine, and look how specific it is: "the top drawer of his cabinet". Next example: "The stadium was full." Again, I'm bored with this simple sentence construction. We need to make it more interesting. "The sound from the stadium was deafening", okay? And then give us some main action perhaps: "The sound from the stadium was deafening as the crowd rose up to chant the player's name." Okay? Give the sense that the stadium is full from what you can see and what you can hear. Okay? A couple of ones to describe weather. "It was hot." Okay? Well, a very young child could write a sentence like that, so if you're sort of a teenager or an adult, it's time to raise the bar. How can we tell that it is hot? Well: "The sun was causing damage to", "The sun was melting", "The sun was burning", "The sun was causing the lady's skin to turn red". Okay? Pick out details that show the effect. "It was cold. It was cold." How do we know it was cold? How cold did it feel? What can you see? "Drainpipes were freezing, ice was as thick as"... I don't know. "It was three inches thick." Whatever, you've got to show details rather than just stating things. -"It was windy." -"The umbrella was totally bent out of shape. The umbrella"-you know for keeping the rain off us-"was totally"-that means fully-"bent"-Yeah? Bent-"...out of shape", out of its normal position. "He found it funny." Right? How funny did he find it? Okay? Better to... For us to get the idea to picture what he was doing: "He was rolling around the floor in hysterics." Okay? When you're so... Find something so funny, you're like: [Laughs]. Okay? He can't control his body he finds it so funny. "Hysterics", that means like totally lost control. "Hysteria". Okay? Hysterics. "In hysterics" means finding something really, really funny. "The castle was captured." Right. I want to get a sense of drama. I want to imagine what's happening there at the castle. Is the king having his head cut off? Are the new army marching in? What's happening? "The new flag was hoisted up on high, greeted by a cheer from the crowd." Okay? Paint pictures, pick out details. Okay? It's good to have a range of adjectives, but how can you show those adjectives? How can you describe them instead? Thank you for watching today's video. If you need to do the IELTS general exam, I'm sure it's for a very important reason. Perhaps you're trying to immigrate to another country, or get admission to a college program, or join a professional training program. Whatever your reason, I know you want to get the highest marks possible. Right? Of course. So I'm going to help you to do exactly that in one particular area of the exam, and that's in your writing section. Now, in the writing section there are two parts, one is a letter and one is an essay. In this lesson we will focus on how you can get the highest marks possible in the letter-writing section. Okay? The 14 tips that I'm going to give you I promise you, if you apply each one of these things, step by step you're going to get more and more marks. Okay? So stick with me and we will go through them. Let's get started. So, the first thing you have to identify when you read the letter-writing task is: What type of letter am I being asked to write? Is it a formal letter, is it a semi-formal letter, or is it an informal letter? Well, how do you know that? Well, you can know it in a few ways and I'm going to explain them, but one of the ways that you can know it is to look at the second point that you need to understand, is to identify the purpose of the letter because some purposes are more formal than other purposes. All right? For example, some formal letters might ask you to request information; or apply for a job; or complain about a product or a service, maybe to an airline, maybe to a store, something like that; or to make a suggestion or a recommendation. All right? To a shopping mall, to a restaurant, something like that. These are more formal situations. These are when we are writing to people or companies that we don't know. All right? That's the clue: You don't have anybody's name, you just have the name of the company. All right. Semi-formal letters might include things like this: Complaining to a landlord; or explaining something, a problem or a situation to a neighbour; or asking a professor for permission to miss an exam or to submit your assignment late. Whatever it is. Okay? The details vary. Doesn't matter. And here, what's...? What identifies the semi-formal? The semi-formal we know it's still a kind of a formal situation, but here we usually do know somebody's name. You would know the name of your landlord, or your professor, or your neighbour, for example. Right? So that means something in terms of the way that you write the letter, the language, the tone, the style. All of this is affected by whether it's formal, semi-formal, or informal. And I'll explain more to you as we go along. Now, examples of informal letters might be where you're being asked to invite a friend, or thank a friend, or apologize to a friend, or ask for advice from someone that you know. Okay? Here what's important is that you really know this person well and you're probably going to call them by first name. So I'm going to explain exactly how all of this translates into the next step, which is how you begin your letter. So the first step was to identify the type of letter. Second step, the purpose. Now the third step is to open and close the letter correctly. Once you've done steps one and two, you will know how to do this step. Because if it's a formal letter then you start with: "Dear Sir" or "Madam", and you end with: "Yours faithfully". Okay? That's how it is. If it's a semi-formal letter, you will start with something like: "Dear Mr. Brown" or "Dear Ms. Stone" or "Mrs. Stone". "Ms." Is when you don't know if a woman is married or not, or if she's just a modern woman. And you end the semi-formal letter with something like: "Yours sincerely". Okay? What we're trying to do is to match up the formality of the situation with these terms that we're using. Okay? The opening and closing salutations they're called, these are called. All right? Next is the informal one.

The belief in learning styles is so widespread, it is considered to be common sense. Few people ever challenge this belief, which has been deeply ingrained in our educational system. Teachers are routinely told that in order to be effective educators, they must identify & cater to individual students' learning styles; it is estimated that around 90% of students believe that they have a specific learning style but research suggests that learning styles don't actually exist! This presentation focuses on debunking this myth via research findings, explaining how/why the belief in learning styles is problematic, and examining the reasons why the belief persists despite the lack of evidence. Dr. Tesia Marshik is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her research interests in educational psychology include student motivation, self-regulation, and teacher-student relationships. In this writing lesson we will look at how to construct good paragraphs and improve writing with better flow and clarity. After the lesson, take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/writing-skills-paragraph/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is about the paragraph. It's a writing lesson, and I want to show people what a paragraph is and how to construct one, what to do, what not to do so you can write very clear, very tight paragraphs. This is especially important for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students but everybody has to follow the exact same rules. Now before I even begin, I must say that I'm talking mostly about academic writing or even business writing. Creative writing like novels or short stories, anything fiction, you can do anything you want. Only always remember: somebody has to read what you wrote so it has to be clear. But academic essays, for example, certain rules you have to follow; you have to be very careful about them. So let's begin. In terms of like the actual way a paragraph looks: you have to indent or skip a line. So let me just make sure you understand what an indent is. This is an indent, the first line a little bit pushed in or you can make sure you skip a line between paragraphs. But don't do both. If you skip a line, don't indent. Okay? That's the main thing. Now, that's in terms of the way it looks. In terms of content -- and this, I can't stress this enough -- very, very, very important: one central idea in one paragraph. Okay? I've seen many people, I've seen many essays where you start a paragraph talking about one thing, and then you go off on a tangent and talk about something completely unrelated. So for example: if you start a paragraph and you're talking about apples, continue to talk about apples. If you go to oranges, that's maybe okay because you're still talking about fruit. But if you start with apples, go to oranges, go to bananas, and then end up with monkeys in space there's a bit of a problem; the reader has no idea what you're talking about. One paragraph, one central idea. Now, make sure that you tell the reader what this central idea is. This is your thesis statement. Okay? It's a very general sentence. All it does is introduce the topic of the paragraph, nothing else. All the details comes after. So speaking of details, we'll talk about details in detail, but all other ideas, all the other sentences, all your sentences with the details must directly relate back to the main idea. So let's say here is your thesis statement; very general, every sentence after must relate back to that thesis statement. Okay? You can't go off to another idea. Everything must support this, must talk about the same topic. Very important. Okay? How long should your paragraph be? Technically, a paragraph could be one sentence, but in an academic essay that rarely happens. But it could be any length you want, as long as you're still on that one topic, as long as you still have things to write and things to say about that topic, say it. If you have four sentences, fine; if you have 10 sentences, also okay. Again, for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students: four, five sentences should be your limit. You can't be too long because you don't have time and you're going to start making mistakes. So now, the details. Very important to have lots of details. Why is this topic important to your overall idea of your essay? Not only tell me what is the topic, what is the thesis statement of the paragraph, make sure you explain to me why this is important to the general idea of the essay. Give me your reasons. Now, why is it important? And then reasons, why you think what you're saying supports this idea. Examples, always use examples because giving me the reasons is okay; examples make me see exactly what you're trying to say. Very easy for me to understand what you're trying to say. Now, in terms of flow, in terms of the way the reader can approach the paragraph, you have to have bridges. What is, what do bridges mean? Basically, when you have one idea in this sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence. Every sentence must have a link to the next sentence. This creates flow, makes it much easier to read and understand, and it keeps you on the one topic. Now, key terms. If you're talking about something specific and you have to use a key term, use it as many times as you need to. Otherwise, avoid repetition. Try not to use the same word more than once in one paragraph. Okay? For example: if you're using the word "moreover" in the paragraph, don't use it, don't use "moreover" again -- use "in addition to", use "furthermore", "another", etc. Try to avoid using one word more than once, especially in the same paragraph.

What we're talking about today is writing introductions. And I'm going to give you three ways that you can write introductions, and you can use any of these three ways to answer an IELTS exam for the discursive essay or discursive essay questions in the CAE exam. So let's take a look at the kind of question I'm talking about. I'll read the question to you first of all. "In Britain, elderly people may go to live in a home with other old people where nurses look after them. Sometimes the government has to pay for this care. Who do you think should pay for this care?" And then in the IELTS question it would say: "Give reasons and support your answer with your own opinions." So this is a discursive essay. And if you look at it, there are two... There are two sides in the question. The first side is the government paying for the care. And the other... The other side is implied, doesn't... Doesn't tell us who the other side is. But if the government's not paying, it's implying that it's the... The children of the elderly people. So: "children of elderly people." So, in all these discursive essays, there's going to be some kind of opposition; one side and a different side. So now we found the two sides, the two ways of looking at this question. And what we're going to look at now is the first way that you can answer this question in an introduction. Because what happens is when you get there and you're writing an exam, many people just get stuck and they don't know what to write for the introduction; they don't know how to begin. And, of course, you can waste time if you don't know what to say. So what some people do is basically just rewrite the question and just maybe change a couple of words, but it's not really an introduction if you do that. So let's look at rhetorical questions. You can use a rhetorical question to write an introduction. What's a "rhetorical question"? I think I just made a rhetorical question. It's when you... When you speak directly to the reader, asking a question, but of course the reader's not going to be able to answer you, so you answer the reader in the course of your argument. So it's taking the question and making your own question out of it, essentially. So, an easy way to do it is by using: "should" to form your question. So remember we've got two sides, we've got an opposition. We've got government paying for the care and we've got the children of elderly people paying for the... For the care. So here we go, here's the first example: "Should the government or family pay for the care of elderly people?" So, in my answer, I've called them "family" here, it's a little bit... It's a little bit more direct and succinct, rather than saying: "children of elderly people". So there's one example. "Should the government be responsible for providing care for elderly people?" I forgot my question mark there. You don't need to write your rhetorical question with "should". You could use other question structures. For example: "Is it the responsibility of government to pay for the care of elderly people?" You don't have to use "should", but I find "should" is an easy... Easy way to generate your question. But then, you know, that's not the whole introduction; you need to say something else. What do you say then? Well, you follow with the context. So, what's the context of this? Well, it's telling us what happens in Britain, elderly people go to homes and the government pays or sometimes the family pay, but maybe there's a different context in other countries. For example: the country you're from. Again, it's implying that, that it's not the same system everywhere in the world. So you could... You could bring this context into the next sentence in your introduction. So here is some sentences you can use for writing about the context. And I haven't... I haven't finished the sentences, I'll just improvise some endings. For example: "This question" - talking about the rhetorical question - "generates a lot of debate because..." and now I'm going to improvise. "This question generates a lot of debate because the care for elderly people is very, very" - not very, very - "is very expensive."

How to Find Your Writing Voice — Improve Your Writing Style!

Hiya WriteRighters, Josh Rueff here, welcome to the WriteRightRite! Wow this video took forever... But it was totally worth it — if it helped me remember the best strategies to finding my writing voice, I'm sure it'll help others as well. Many thanks to the photographers, funny pic-makers and composers who helped make this tutorial easier to watch (: I've given you attribution below in the first comment because it wouldn't fit here. Here's the transcription of the information we went over in the how to find your writing voice video: This is one of the best questions I hear from new writers. How do I fine-tune my writing voice? I believe this is one of the most important questions any writer can ask, whether you're just on the brink of making the plunge into writing, or a seasoned writing veteran. It's like your clothes, hobbies, your work if you love it — the art you create, the music you listen to and those glorious DIY projects you build from scratch. Your writing voice is what sets you apart; it's what brings readers to you and fuels your motivation — because writing, once you've found your voice, becomes an extension of your personality, a way to connect with people and a channel to express who you are. There's a lot of noise in the world around us, and as a writer, part of your craft is being heard, and the way we do that is by showing who you are, how you're unique from everyone else and why your voice is important to listen to. This is how you can start finding your writing voice: 1. Find your personality. If you could choose one vehicle that would best communicate your personality, what would it be? If you had to wear 3 sets of clothing to express your personality, what would they be? What are the top 3 foods that you would be if you reincarnated into a culinary dish? (That's assuming you've completely jacked your karma of course) 2. Using the answers you chose from those questions, describe yourself with 3 words. For example, I may say that I'm Inventive, Quirky, and Honest. 3. Now pay attention to how you talk in every day conversation. Do you joke a lot? Maybe you like to debate or dig to the root of every issue — on the other hand you may prefer jumping lightly from topic to topic because you get bored without variety. 4. Using that info, compare it to your writing. Ask yourself, Is this how I talk? One of the most common mistakes a writer can make is to write with words she or he would never use in every day conversation. This will come across as awkward, clumsy and even pretentious at times. 5. What are your favorite books? Do the authors of those books write in a voice you'd like to emulate? If so, study their voice as you read — note how they use punctuation, imagery, metaphors and rhythm. Look for the quirks and nuances that make their voice different from everyone else's. 6. Another great thing to learn about yourself is your life passions. What are your favorite hobbies, sports, pastimes? Choose the word that best describes your favorite activities in life, and add that to the description of your voice. 7. What emotions do you feel most often? Add them to your writer's voice toolbox. 8. Sometimes other people know us better than we know ourselves. Your writer's voice is something your friends and family will know better than anyone — including yourself. Tell them you're honing your writing craft and you need to learn more about your voice. Ask them questions like, what makes the way I communicate different from everyone else? You need to know every odd choice of words, speech ticks, unique expressions and body language. Ask them the same questions you just asked yourself, and make sure it's not all about you — tell them how you think their personality is unique and learn about how they'd describe themselves. After you've done this — keeping notes of your answers and other people's answers, keep the good and trash the bad. If you have a tendency to ramble, learn to be succinct. If your vocabulary is bland, expand your mind with new words — once you've used a new word in conversation twice a day, every day for a week, you've gained ownership of that word. Try it, you'll see what I mean. Weed out everything you don't like about your current voice, and strive to create the voice that you want. Don't worry about being a copycat — if you start writing like Hemingway it'll come across as... not real. But over time with lots of deliberate practice, your voice will emerge with only hints of influence from Hemingway and your other favorite writers. One last thought I'd like to add is that finding your writing voice takes time. Be patient and be as deliberate as possible in learning your current voice, choosing your ideal voice, and creating the perfect writing voice that expresses who you are, and makes the statement " I am important to listen to".

Essay Format - How to Write an English Composition in 4 Easy Steps!

Essay Format - http://www.singlishtoenglish.com/essay-format/ - how to write an English essay An essay or composition is a written piece of work that is short and usually addresses just one subject. Many kids have trouble with their creative writing assignments and essays because they don't know the essay format and so don't have a clue on how to develop the subject matter. I'm going to break down essay format and simplify it so that essay writing becomes a breeze! English essay or composition writing can be a scary prospect even if you are fluent in the English language. I'm going to simplify and demystify essay writing and help you write the best essay ever. Here's the guide to essay writing in 4 easy stages. Now, how to start an essay? When you first get your essay topic, read it carefully. Then you can work out the essay plan. This is the first step in writing your essay. The essay plan is the essay structure and can be divided into 3 parts; the introduction, body of the essay and the conclusion. Each of these is made up of paragraphs. Paragraphs are a group of sentences which revolve around a single idea. The second step is the introduction. The essay introduction is the first paragraph in composition writing. It is usually very short and sets the scene or 'introduces' the subject of the essay. The readers attention should be snagged right here at the introduction. If you are writing about a pet or hobby, say your pet cat, then introduce the 'subject' here in the introduction. The introduction paragraph can even be just 1 dramatic sentence or 2 to 3 sentences long. If it's your cat that you are writing about, it will be introduced here, giving it's name and a brief description in this paragraph. The third step in essay writing is the body of the essay. The body of the essay is really the main story itself. Here you can go on to describe your pet and its habits. The number of paragraphs that make up the body of the essay depend on the number of points you wish to write about. If we take the example of the pet cat again, in the body of the essay, you will write about the your cat's favorite food, the way your cat plays, any amusing habits, favorite toys and so on. You can divide up each of these points into a paragraph which will collectively make up the body of the essay. It will be good to include some relevant idioms to your essay add depth and interest to it. For some examples of idioms and their use, please watch my Idioms videos. I'm sure you will find them instructional and amusing. Once the body of the essay is complete, it is time to wrap up your composition. This is the fourth step or the conclusion of the essay. The conclusion is literally the wrap up, where you give your impressions and complete the story. Back to the cat essay, in conclusion, you write your feelings towards your cat and perhaps how your cat expresses his feelings towards you. You could finish it with an amusing anecdote which will be satisfying to the reader. That's it! Your essay is complete. It is really important to have an essay outline in place before you start so that you can move from 1 point to another seamlessly. This will help you write an excellent essay effortlessly. Here's a quick recap to writing the best essay ever. Plan your essay and divide it up into 3 parts, the introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction is where the subject of the composition is introduced. The body of the essay is where the different aspects of the subject are discussed and in the conclusion, the essay is finished with your impressions of the subject.
