Acoustic Guitar Sessions: Richard Osborn's Steel-String Ragas
Richard Osborn is not well-known, but his story stretches back to the Berkeley branch of Takoma Records’ steel-string guitar legacy in the late 1960s. He emulated the playing of John Fahey and studied for almost a year with the great Robbie Basho, who pioneered what Osborn calls “free raga style,” which combines some of the structural elements of Indian classical music, improvisation, and acoustic guitar fingerpicking into a hypnotic and at times rhythmically intense weave. Along the way he was also heavily influenced by sarod master Ali Akbar Khan. Then came a years-long immersion in classical guitar, which came to an abrupt halt when he suffered a severe injury to his left hand. It would be three decades before Osborn regained his form and emerged from his musical hiatus, again bent on further developing his unique strain of American raga guitar. His comeback began in earnest in 2010 with an appearance on a Tompkins Square label compilation called Beyond Berkeley Guitar. He’s followed that up with a pair of releases of his own: 2012’s Giving Voice: Guitar Explorations and his 2015 disc, Freehand. He showed up for Acoustic Guitar Sessions with a pair of fine instruments: A Tsuneyuki (“Tony") Yamamoto 12-string and, serendipitous for what turned out to be the one-hundredth Session, a 100-year-old six-string made by a Philadelphia luthier. He performed a pair of instrumentals from his Freehand CD, “Cloud Towers” and “A Singing in the Blood.” Prepare to be transported! acousticguitar.com/Sessions
Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents William Fitzsimmons
With a hushed, introspective style that calls to mind artists such as Nick Drake and Iron & Wine, singer-songwriter William Fitzsimmons will stop you in your tracks. His deeply personal songs and deft guitar touch make for an arresting combination. Fitzsimmons stopped by the AG studios to share a couple of original songs and talk about his approach to songwriting, his fascination with fingerpicking and alternate tunings, and his new-found love for Martin guitars. Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Eliza Gilkyson
Singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson has been a mainstay of the Austin scene, thanks in large part to her soulful, engaging voice and vibrant social consciousness. Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Bruce Cockburn
The March 2015 issue of Acoustic Guitar will feature an excerpt from Bruce Cockburn’s new memoir, Rumours of Glory, in which the Canadian singer, songwriter, and guitarist talks about why, at 23, he left ’60s-era folk-rock to focus on solo acoustic music. He’d met fingerstyle guitarist Fox Watson, who taught Cockburn how to play in alternate tunings. “I was sort of disdainful of open tunings back then because I didn’t like most of what people did with them—playing the same four chord formations in different tunings, trying for a specious variety in their sound without going to the trouble of actually learning their instrument,” Cockburn writes. “But when Fox played in any of several tunings he used, what came out was fluid as a mountain creek and agile as a gull.” That was more than four decades ago. Since then, Cockburn has returned to playing electric guitar in rock bands, but he never left an acoustic guitar far behind, and he’s developed a style that is unmistakably his. In this special half-hour edition of Acoustic Guitar Sessions, senior editor Marc Greilsamer talks at length with Cockburn about his love of acoustic guitars and the singer-songwriter performs three tunes: the instrumental “Bohemian 3-Step,” “Waiting for a Miracle” and his most famous song, the politically fierce “If I Had a Rocket Launcher.” - See more at: http://www.acousticguitar.com/Sessions/

Jack Williams: Acoustic Guitar Sessions
You could just call Jack Williams a singer/songwriter, but then you might miss out of the fact that he’s an old-school troubadour with a gift not only for song (as an arranger and composer), but stellar fretwork and gorgeous guitar tone. He’s been associated over the years with the likes of Harry Nilsson and Mickey Newbury. Yet, he’s not well known. “Being able to draw on resources compiled [58] years of experience as a performing musician, it should come as no surprise that Jack Williams is one of the most talented and accomplished performers on the folk circuit today,” the All Music Guide opined. “What does come as something of a surprise is just how little recognition Williams gets for his mature blend of introspective genre-dyfing music.” Equipped with a battle-scarred 1974 Martin D-35, Williams stopped by the AG studio to share his gift of song with a solo-acoustic performance of “A Natural Man,” his tribute to Josh White,” as well as the cinematic original “Thirsty Town” and a cover of the Mississippi Sheiks classic “Sitting on Top of the World.”

Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Caitlin Canty
While on tour for her excellent new album Reckless Skyline, singer-songwriter Caitlin Canty stopped by the Acoustic Guitar offices to play three songs on her 1930s Recording King guitar and talk about her recent move to Nashville. Watch Canty, joined by pedal steel and guitar player Eric Heywood (Ray LaMontagne's Pariah Dogs, Tift Merritt, The Pretenders), perform "Get Up," "I Never," and "Southern Man." Canty also shares how she went from wanting a new Gibson J-45 to picking up a vintage Recording King and falling in love with the way it complements her vocal range. "This guitar inspired a lot of the songs," says Canty, referring to her new album. "It felt like co-writes." Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Aoife O'Donovan
With her absolutely gorgeous crystalline voice and unique singing style, Aoife O'Donovan has become one of folk music's leading lights. Upon going solo a few years ago, she practiced guitar incessantly so that she'd be able to accompany her singing, and in the process developed a distinctive, syncopated two-finger picking method. O'Donovan talks to AG about her "crash course" in guitar playing and shows off her 1934 size-0 Martin as well. We also discuss her array of influences--from mid-'90s Lilith Fair favorites to traditional folk and bluegrass--and, best of all, get to hear two lovely tunes. See more at: http://www.acousticguitar.com/Sessions/
Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Della Mae
This week, AG Sessions welcomes Della Mae, whose blend of bluegrass, folk, and pop make for engaging listening. Boston's Della Mae was formed in 2009, when fiddle champion Kimber Ludiker was determined to start an all-female bluegrass band. Today, Della Mae is an internationally renowned act and a favorite on the festival circuit. Though each member of Della Mae can flat-out play, they are equally as concerned with song structure, melody, and vocal prowess. The result is a winning synthesis of heartfelt songwriting, wonderful harmonies, and top-notch musicianship that puts a contemporary spin on traditional bluegrass music. Hear Della Mae perform a couple of their most popular songs and discuss a range of topics from their State Department-sponsored world travels to their deep connection with Bourgeois guitars. - See more at: http://www.acousticguitar.com/Sessions/
Chris Robinson Brotherhood Acoustic Guitar Session
Chris Robinson is best-known for being the lead singer and principal songwriter for the bluesy rock band the Black Crowes (along with his guitar-slinging brother Rich), but for the past three years he’s been more active fronting the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, which Robinson has labeled as a “farm-to-table psychedelic band.” The CRB (as they’re often called) can still rock hard, Crowes-style, but in general their music has a looser, more melodic and lyrical feel, perhaps showing the influence of the time both Robinson and lead guitarist Neal Casal (previously with Ryan Adams & the Cardinals) have spent playing music with former Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. When the CRB was in Northern California to play some gigs in late July, Robinson and Casal stopped by our offices with their acoustic guitars to play a couple of songs from the new CRB album, Barefoot in the Head. Appropriately enough, Robinson was barefoot as he sang “Hark the Herald Hermit Speaks” and “If You Had a Heart to Break.” Both are cool tunes; some lovely harmonies on that second one, particularly.

A lot of things can make a vintage guitar special. The way it looks, the way it feels, the way it sounds.. the truly special ones posses all three. Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents James McMurtry
Texas singer, songwriter, and guitarist James McMurtry arrived at the AG studio recently, surly and travel-weary, with a new haircut, an old fishing cap, an Ovation 12-string guitar, and a deep well of stories to tell in song. McMurtry’s most recent album, Complicated Game — highly praised in the April issue of Acoustic Guitar — has more of an acoustic focus than his previous 10 releases dating back to 1989. Watch him play a pair of songs from the new album — the dark “Copper Canteen” and the comparatively lighter “How’m I Gonna Find You Now” (which, he grumbles, is “a little comic relief” after the first one) — followed by his famous new-millennium protest anthem, “We Can’t Make It Here,” from his 2005 album Childish Things.

How to Adjust an Acoustic Guitar Truss Rod (Excerpt)
When a quality guitar leaves the factory, the truss rod is adjusted according to the maker’s taste in setup specs. But a change in string gauges, climate (especially a change in humidity), or simply the player’s taste may require an adjustment, even on a new guitar. If you have a guitar that played great when you got it, but has developed a higher, stiffer action over time, it may be time to learn how to adjust your truss rod so you can keep the action just the way you like it. Two primary signs tell you that your truss rod needs adjusting: 1. There’s a noticeable change in the action; the height of the strings over the frets has become either too high or too low. The most common scenario is that the strings get higher as the neck upbows from the string pull. 2. Some strings buzz on the frets between the nut and the fifth fret. This indicates that the neck is either too straight or it is backbowed from the truss rod’s slow, constant pressure over time. Excerpted from Acoustic Guitar Care and Maintenance

Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Julian Lage
AG Sessions is pleased to present the phenomenal Julian Lage, who shares a few tunes from his new solo release, World's Fair, and discusses everything from his enormous stylistic range to his brand-new Waterloo guitar. Still just 27 years old, guitarist Julian Lage has already made a huge impact on the music world. After first making a name for himself playing straight-ahead jazz with the legendary vibes player Gary Burton, Lage has branched out in a variety of directions--bluegrass and fiddle tunes with Chris Eldridge, avant-jazz with Nels Cline, and almost everything in between. During our far-ranging conversation, Lage talks thoughtfully about developing his own guitar voice, his impressive genre-hopping, and how he's able to maintain a "delicate touch" on his instrument. Of course, his astounding solo-guitar work is featured as well on three tunes, including an inventive, engaging take on the Elizabeth Cotten classic "Freight Train." - See more at: http://www.acousticguitar.com/Sessions/

Yamaha F310 Acoustic Guitar Review by Rikki's Music Shop, Edinburgh
http://www.rikkismusic.com/Yamaha-F310-Acoustic-Guitar-Pack Solid construction, ease of use and stunning sound make the Yamaha F310 acoustic guitar an excellent choice for beginners. If you're looking for an amazing affordable guitar, the F310 is the one for you. The Yamaha F310 acoustic guitar is a very attractive and well finished guitar. The classic dreadnaught shape is ideal to hold and comfortable to play either standing up or sitting down. The guitar is extremely user friendly and offers an outstanding playing experience. It is very easy to tune and it stays in tune for a long time. Yamaha have carefully selected the tonewoods when designing this guitar resulting in a fantastic sound for a budget guitar, one which simply blows away similarly priced competition. Yamaha F310 Acoustic Guitar Main Features Include: - Spruce top provides a very natural sound with superbly resonant qualities and brilliant projection of sound. - Meranti back and sides enhances the overall stability of this instrument both in the way it is constructed and the way these choice timbers react with sound waves, helping it project the tone forward towards the sound hole. - Nato neck gives a great feel to the player and offers such a smooth feel on the palm of the hand. This timber doesn't just feel good when used for a guitar neck but it has excellent tonal qualities too. - Rosewood fingerboard is a very warm sounding material which is perfect for an acoustic guitar. It is also worthy to note that the feel of the fingerboard on this particular guitar is superb. Individual notes resonate brilliantly, as do chords. - Rosewood bridge is a very hard wood which is perfect for this part of the guitar as there is a lot of stress on this area of the guitar created by the strings which are pegged into the bridge and secured at the other end of the instrument. The bridge is such an important area of the guitar so Yamaha have made a winning decision not to scrimp on quality here. Yamaha F310 Acoustic Guitar Package Includes: - F310 acoustic guitar as above. - Digital guitar tuner YT100 which is very easy to use and ensures your guitar will always be in tune. - Spare set of strings to cater for the breakages which inevitably occur. - Strap to hold your guitar comfortably whilst sitting or standing up. - Instructional DVD to get you started playing your new guitar.

Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Darrell Scott
Americana veteran Darrell Scott stopped by the Acoustic Guitar Sessions studio to perform three songs on his Stefan Sobell guitar. “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” is from his 1997 album Aloha from Nashville (Sugar Hill), written after trying to find information about his mysterious great-grandfather whom his family won’t discuss, except to note that he played banjo, was from Harlan county, Kentucky, and “did something bad.” Next he performs “Down to the River” from his 2016 release The Couchville Sessions (Full Light/Thirty Tigers), which features a voice-over from country-folk legend Guy Clark that was 14 years in the making. He rounds off with a song his father wrote the lyrics to, “With a Memory like Mine,” from 2000’s Real Time (Full Skies).

David Crosby Talks About His Impressive Acoustic Guitar Collection…and the One That Got Away
Our January issue features the one and only David Crosby, who spoke to AG from his sprawling home in California’s Santa Ynez Valley about some of his most prized acoustic guitars. Watch above as the founding member of the Byrds, CSN, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young offers his opinion on which company makes the best acoustic guitars; the first (good) guitar he ever purchased; the “Crosby” tuning (EBDGAD); and his wistful remembrance of the guitar that got away—a 1939 Herringbone he traded for “substances” during his years in the grips of a $1,000-a-day cocaine and heroin addiction. “It’s not a pleasant memory,” Crosby says, in a near whisper. “It’s just one of those things I gotta live with. I’ll regret it for the rest of my life. But there it is—I did it. That’s how it was.” Crosby’s passion for acoustic guitars is deeply felt in this short video, in which he also talks about his first job as a busboy at a coffeehouse in his hometown of Santa Barbara, where he worked for free just for the opportunity to sing harmonies with the paid folksinger. “The only reason I got through high school was the choir,” he says. “Every once in a while we’d get all in tune, and the whole rest of the room would lift up and get magical for a minute. I love that shit! It feels real good.
