Let Oracle Do the Heavy Lifting: using compile-time warnings

13:35
The PL/SQL compiler does more than make sure your code can execute. If you turn on compile-time warnings, the compiler will also give you recommendations on improving performance, taking full advantage of PL/SQL features, improving overall code quality. Examples: the compiler can tell you under a number of circumstances that a runtime error will occur; that there are unreachable chunks of code, and more. ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. SQL Prompt - find invalid objects

01:47
SQL Prompt is a code completion, code formatting, and refactoring tool for SQL Server. It’ll plug into SQL Server Management Studio or Visual Studio. You’ll find you can work more quickly and accurately with SQL queries, as well as standardize across your team by sharing formatting styles and commonly used SQL snippets. Try it free for 28 days at www.red-gate.com/sqlprompt In this tip Data Platform MVP Ike Ellis explains how to use SQL Prompt to find invalid objects, so you can catch problems earlier in development and resolve issues quickly. For more tips for writing SQL effortlessly check out the #SuperSQLTips playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhFdCK734P8A_q6XHDXi4CQzys3R0Jw3X Transcript: Hi I'm Ike Ellis and I’m going to show you a cool feature of SQL Prompt. One of the issues with T-SQL is that doesn't really tell you when you have dependencies with your objects by default. So if I create a table right here like the customers table and then I create a stored procedure that's dependent on the customers table and then later on at some point I delete the customers table like I drop table customers, there's no warning here telling me that I've got a procedure using that table. Software development teams have struggled with this for a very long time. Often what they'll do is at one step in the release pipeline they'll drop and recreate all the stored procedures, or all their views or all their functions and then it will warn them to tell them that they have a dependency in the drop and recreation. But the problem with that is you have to remember to do it - you have to do it manually or automatically - and you actually have to do it at the last step of your release pipeline, well after you've made any schema changes or else you really didn't do anything useful. But one thing you can do with Redgate SQL Prompt is you can right-click on your database and you can say ‘find invalid objects’ and it will warn you, it will say “hey this store procedure is dependent on a table that's no longer here”. And if you get used to doing this you can do it way earlier in the development process. You can do it every day or at the end of every day or before you check in a source control, and then you can catch your problem before any other developer on your team finds the problem. We know that when a developer finds his own problem or her own problem that it's far cheaper, way easier to resolve, all good things. So thanks, hope you enjoyed this tip and you find out for yourself by downloading the latest SQL Prompt. Thanks have a great day.

Regular Expressions (Regex) Tutorial: How to Match Any Pattern of Text

37:55
In this regular expressions (regex) tutorial, we're going to be learning how to match patterns of text. Regular expressions are extremely useful for matching common patterns of text such as email addresses, phone numbers, URLs, etc. Almost every programming language has a regular expression library, so learning regular expressions with not only help you with finding patterns in your text editors, but also you'll be able to use these programming libraries to search for patterns programmatically as well. SQL Prompt - script object as ALTER

01:01
SQL Prompt is a code completion, code formatting, and refactoring tool for SQL Server. It’ll plug into SQL Server Management Studio or Visual Studio. You’ll find you can work more quickly and accurately with SQL queries, as well as standardize across your team by sharing formatting styles and commonly used SQL snippets. Try it free for 28 days at www.red-gate.com/sqlprompt In this tip Data Platform MVP Steve Jones explains how to use SQL Prompt to script out objects as an ALTER statement in just a couple of clicks. For more tips for writing SQL effortlessly check out the #SuperSQLTips playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhFdCK734P8A_q6XHDXi4CQzys3R0Jw3X Transcript: Hi I'm Steve Jones from SQL Server Central and I've got another quick SQL Prompt tip brought to you by Redgate Software. One of the things people love about SQL Prompt is that I can type things like this store procedure and I'll get information about it and if I actually highlight at the end of it I can click on this and I can see the code. But that's sometimes hard to read and I have to expand this out to look at the rest of the code. If I want a quick look at what's inside of this I can right-click it and select Script object as ALTER. When I do that I’ll get a new window with all the code for the stored procedure listed including the alter procedure already set up, so if I need to change some code - perhaps I wanted to actually change this - then I could actually do that and compile it very quickly. Or if I just want to look at the code I can see it and then when I'm ready, go back to my original query. Hopefully this quick tip is something you'll use in SQL Prompt. I'm Steve Jones for SQL Server Central and Redgate Software.

SQL: Change User Password

02:38
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to change user password in sql plus PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. PL/SQL includes procedural language elements such as conditions and loops. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. It can handle exceptions (runtime errors). Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

2. An exception raised does not automatically roll back uncommitted changes to tables.

02:51
Any non-query DML statements that complete successfully in your session are not rolled back when an exception occurs - either directly in PL/SQL or propagated out from the SQL engine. You still have the option of either committing or rolling back yourself. If, however, the exception goes unhandled out to the host environment, a rollback almost always occurs (this is performed by the host environment). How to solve ORA-01940: cannot drop a user that is currently connected

06:12
This video demonstrates how to solve the ORA-01940 cannot drop a user that is currently connected error. This error is raised when we try to drop a user that is connected to the database or having an active connection to the database. We will demonstrate a solution in which we would kill the user that is connected to the oracle database by its serial# and PID. This tutorial will guide viewers on how to kill an active session and then drop the user.
