Building Amazing Homes & Mobile Spaces Using Shipping Containers!

06:32
In this video we explore and learn how to use shipping containers as strong, durable and mobile building blocks to create amazing structures of all kinds, like a house, addition, office space, or cabin; and we feature a few stunning projects to get you inspired! Anthony Ruggiero from Storstac Inc. (http://www.storstac.com/) showed us around their yard in Toronto, Ontario and took the time to teach us about the ins and outs of building with shipping containers. We're excited to share the tips and information we learned with you. Shipping containers come in standard 20 foot and 40 foot lengths, and there are other specialty custom sizes like the 10', 45', 48', 53' long containers. Almost all shipping containers are made in China, and can be bought used (after they've been used for 10-20 years), or new, which means they've one been used once. Since there are no shipping manifests for used containers to show what was transported in them over the course of their lifetime (it could be anything from clothes to nuclear waste), it's better to build with a new shipping container that's only been used once. They're made with COR-TEN steel, which is a weathering steel that can withstand harsh weather conditions and elements like salt water because the rust on weathering steel creates a protective patina to keep it strong, whereas rust on mild steel would actually weaken the metal. While building with shipping containers is not necessarily cheaper than conventional building, it does have advantages because the containers are modular, movable and mobile, durable, and have a unique, modern look. They can be do it yourself friendly if you've worked with steel before, or if you find a company to take care of the steel work for you so you can focus on how to frame it and finish it from the inside. Let us know what you think of shipping containers as alternative building blocks in the comments! Magical houses, made of bamboo | Elora Hardy

10:18
You've never seen buildings like this. The stunning bamboo homes built by Elora Hardy and her team in Bali twist, curve and surprise at every turn. They defy convention because the bamboo itself is so enigmatic. No two poles of bamboo are alike, so every home, bridge and bathroom is exquisitely unique. In this beautiful, immersive talk, she shares the potential of bamboo, as both a sustainable resource and a spark for the imagination. "We have had to invent our own rules," she says. Incredible Shipping Container Home By The Sea Is A Small Space Marvel

19:37
After spending it’s life on the open ocean, this shipping container landed on the shores of New Zealand where it was transformed into a spectacular home for a dynamic young couple. After living in the container home for three years, a new addition to the family inspired a renovation project which saw the tiny house transform into a family home. Support our show: https://www.patreon.com/livingbig Kim and James have done an incredible job with the design and build of their container home. Completely council consented, they constructed their home from a 40ft shipping container which was chopped down to 30ft to be able to fit onto the section and fit in with local regulations. Around the container home, they have constructed a large deck and a wonderful outdoor living area. Read more: https://www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com/incredible-shipping-container-home-by-the-sea/ The home is positioned above two 20ft shipping containers, one which acts as storage space and one which functions as a base of operations for the couple’s company, a t-shirt design and printing business. Ultimately here, James and Kim have created a spectacular work / home balance thanks to some very clever small space design. Kim is also an author who has recently published a children’s book about an architect deigning a tiny house. Vipp Shelter tiny prefab as precise industrial-era appliance

19:32
The Danish company VIPP (famous for its iconic 1939 wastebasket, now in the MOMA) has created a prefab tiny home designed down to the last detail (flashlight included). Their 592-square-foot “plug and play getaway” wasn’t designed to blend into nature, but to float above it; fifty thousand pounds of glass and steel serve as a frame for the surrounding landscape. VIPP designer Morten Bo Jensen explains that the shelter wasn’t designed as a piece of architecture, but an industrial object. The prefab structure is built in a factory and the four modules are transported by truck to the site. The shelter can be constructed in 3 to 5 days using just bolts for the modules and 9,000 screws for the steel plates. The small prefab can house 4 people: 2 on a daybed and 2 in a loft bedroom. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls slide open and closed with mechanical rollers, designed to move the 400 or 500-kilo doors with ease. “We kind of like this idea that you just grab it and slide it open,” explains Jensen, “instead of motorized solutions that would be more different from our philosophy of very mechanical products that just last for a long time.” https://www.vipp.com/en/shelter/the-vipp-shelter/ Original story: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/vipp-shelter-tiny-prefab-as-precise-industrial-era-appliance/

The Fairytale Tiny House Shaped Like A Shoe

Underground dome house stays warm in Omaha winters

12:13
Rebecca Weitzel and Jeff Waschkowski live in a buried home in Omaha, Nebraska and while winters temperatures can hit negative 30 degrees (record lows), inside the home is affected by the temperature of the earth, not the air, and rarely drops below 55°F (13°C). Built as a labor of love by Lloyd Texley, the former head of science for the Omaha Public School District, the underground home took him 10 years to build. He buried 3 rebar-enforced concrete domes under up to 15 feet of dirt. The home's only opening is a glass wall facing south. Waschkowski explains that because the indoor temperature reflects the heat of the surrounding earth, it mostly fluctuates between 64 and 74°F. The couple explain the home is also very quiet and soundproofed from the noise of their busy street. With all the cement, the home was fairly expensive and Waschkowski argues that berm houses (earth-sheltered homes) are about half the cost with most of the same benefits.

Homesteading Family Living Off-Grid in a Spectacular Earthship

14:35
This inspiring off-grid homesteading family lives in a renovated stone earthship. They grow their own food, collect rainwater, use solar power, have composting toilets, and they have a pond that filters their grey water. On top of living an eco friendly lifestyle, they dedicate their work to important projects like urban gardening and promoting industrial hemp as "Hempbassadors." To follow their exciting project, check them out on Facebook and Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/hempbassadors/ https://www.facebook.com/hempbassadors/ Off-Grid Living playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLslKBpzJILet38X4jewEbINeMM9MJCMXe Earthship playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLslKBpzJILeszhgpmnHfNQwoRgAcXYBXr During the winter, they typically take 2-4 months off to travel, which is financially possible for them because they don't have a mortgage (the house only cost $15,000 when they bought it). Their daughter, Emma, is in the first grade, but they take her out of school while they travel and homeschool her on the road. Francis & Marie have dreamt of being self-sufficient for a long time. For 8 years they renovated their earthship home, planted their permaculture gardens, and prepared for the day they'd be able to live their dream full-time. For over 2 years now they've been living on their dream homestead. They grow apples, berries, and other fruits which they preserve for winter. They also grow vegetables, and collect eggs from their chickens. In the summer, their grocery bill can be as low as $30/week because they produce so much of their own food. Much of their harvest is kept cool in their root cellar although they would like to have a fridge. The home is a passive solar home with a greenhouse in the front. It can stay above zero degrees on it's own, but they have a wood stove – an Amish Pioneer Princess – to heat the house, to cook, and to heat their hot water. For rainwater, they have 3 collection systems. One is a tank in front of the house that collects water from the greenhouse, and they use a solar powered pump to transfer it into an underground cistern. Another tank collects rainwater from the roof, and a third collects rainwater from their shed. In total they can have 10,000 litres of fresh water when all of the tanks are full. They don't have a well yet so they get their drinking water from a cabin they have access to down the road. Building with Cob - A Natural & Affordable Way to Build a House

09:19
Bryce from Dreamweavers Collective explains the benefits and challenges of building with cob! Cob is a natural building material created from clay, sand, and straw that can be used to build load bearing walls, window and door frames, and much more. It's an affordable and natural way to build using materials that are typically found locally. In fact, building with earth and natural fibres is a technique used in many places around the world. This style of construction can have different names, like earth building, adobe, mud bricks, etc. Unlike conventional buildings, cob is a simple way to build that can be an interesting and easy option to build a DIY green home using little, if any, toxic materials. Bryce teaches natural building and cob workshops in person and online. You can find out more about his courses on his website here: http://www.dreamweaverscollective.org/ He calls himself a 3rd generation cobber because he learned cob building techniques from Pat Hennebery at Cobworks: https://www.cobworks.com/ And Pat learned about cob from Ianto Evans, Linda Smiley, and the rest of the team at The Cob Cottage Company: http://www.cobcottage.com/ We hope you enjoyed learning about this interesting, natural, affordable, and alternative building technique :) We think cob houses are incredible and beautiful structures! Modern Caveman - Man Builds A $230,000 House In 700-Year-Old Cave

04:42
SUBSCRIBE to the Barcroft network: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj THE pressures of modern life mean that most of us have probably dreamt at one time or another of fleeing to the hills. But real-life caveman Angelo Mastropietro has made his hermit dream a reality - by spending over £160,000 turning a 700-year-old cave, carved into 250 million year old sandstone cliffs in the the Wyre Forest, into his dream home. The 38-year-old, originally from Worcestershire, was living a high-flying life as the head of a successful recruitment company in Australia when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007. The condition led to him being temporarily paralysed - and inspired him to seek a simpler life. Log Cabin TIMELAPSE Built By ONE MAN In The Forest

04:59
No talking viral timelapse video of Shawn James off grid log cabin build by one man alone in the wilderness of Canada, from 1st tree I cut to last floor board I laid. Please SUBSCRIBE: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIMXKin1fXXCeq2UJePJEog?sub_confirmation=1 So Why Should You Subscribe To My Channel? To watch me build my next cabin - bigger and better than this one!.. To relax… To virtually immerse yourself in nature… To see how I live debt free, stress free and low cost… To see how I build things alone… To see how I cook with no electricity or gas… To hear what steps I took to retire in my mid-forties so I could live my dream life… To interact with the happiest and most helpful community of viewers on YouTube… To become more self-reliant. If you want to build a rustic log cabin or tiny off grid home alone in the wilderness and you haven't seen the rest of my videos, this is a good primer. It's super fast motion though, so if you are interested in building a primitive log cabin like this, take a look at the "Log Cabin The Bear Den" playlist on the channel. At the beginning of the video, I show a winter drone photo of the cabin in the snow in December. Then I flashback to the first balsam fir tree I cut down with a saw and axe near the cabin. I drag the trees into place and clear the cabin site. All summer, I cut the notches in the logs as I built the cabin up, offsite. Once I was finished notching the logs with a log scribe, saw, axe, adze and wood carving gouge, I loaded up the entire cabin of logs and moved them to my land near Algonquin Park, Ontario Canada. Once on site, I spent a month reassembling the cabin on a foundation of sand and gravel. Once the log walls were up, I again used hand tools to shape every log, board and timber to erect the gable ends, the wood roof, the porch, the outhouse and a seemingly endless number of woodworking projects. For the roof, I used an ancient primitive technology to waterproof and preserve the wood - shou sugi ban, a fire hardening wood preservation technique unique to Japan and other areas in northern climates. Because the cabin is offgrid, I have used handtools for most of the build and without power, I have no options on site regardless. The tiny house will continue to be operated with power, not even renewable energy for now, so I'm heating the cabin with a woodstove fire place, which I also cook on. The cabin is made of cedar fence posts, twelve feet long and the cabin measures 10 feet x 20 feet inside with a one hundred square foot sleeping loft on the second floor. The floor is made of two inch thick pine planks, torched to help repel water and to give them a rustic barn board appearance. Tune off sound if you don't want to hear the music, - there is no talking in this silent video. If you are a subscriber or long time viewer, there is some new footage at the end of the video, but otherwise you have seen most of this. As always, I'll release a new video on Friday showing the progress I made this week on the door and the ice box for food storage. Build a Log Cabin with Fence Posts In My Backyard

13:59
What happens when the logs need another 6 months to season but I need to get my log cabin built? Build it in my backyard with cedar fence posts! In this video, I explain what I'm doing with fence posts, what the next steps are and when I hope to get this cabin built before I build another one with the trees I cut down earlier.z

13 BIGGEST Houses

08:02
13 BIGGEST Houses From mansions to palaces to crazy people who got money in ways we don't understand these are the 13 BIGGEST Houses. Antilla is the name of a giant futuristic mansion in Mumbai, India and is the first billion dollar residential home to ever exist. It was commissioned by the world’s fifth richest man Mukesh Ambani, who is the owner of the biggest company in India, Reliance Industries. Mukesh’s 27 story mansion towers above the surrounding apartment high-rises and comes complete with a cinema complex, helipads, a health center, and hanging garden. Hala Ranch is a 95 acre estate just north of Aspen, Colorado in the Rocky mountains. Hala Ranch originally belonged to a Saudi Prince named Bandar bin Sultan before it was purchased by an American hedge fund manager named John Paulson.10 years ago Hala Ranch was the most expensive estate ever listed in the U.S., priced at $135 million dollars in 2006. 135 million seems like a fair price for a 56,000 square foot area that trumps the White House in size. 50 Poplar Hill Drive, in Farmington Connecticut is the address of 50 Cent’s crazy crib. His 51, 567 square foot mansion comes complete with all the amenities any rapper could need: 21 bedrooms, 25 bathrooms, an indoor pool, a gym, a basketball court, a green screen studio, a recording studio, and an underground disco room complete with stripper poles. This pimped out mansion is as lavish as they come but has unfortunately cost 50 cent more than a million and has spiraled him into bankruptcy. The Manor, also known as the Spelling Manor named after its previous owners, now belongs to a British heiress named Petra Ecclestone. The Manor is a 56,500 square foot estate in the posh neighborhood of Holmby Hills, California. Previously the most expensive home in America priced at 125, million dollars, it was sold at the low low price of 85 million to the heiress. The Hearst Estate is a huge property that spans several hundred acres and includes a huge ranch and a herd of zebras. The property is actually made up of one main house and several smaller guest houses. Casa Grande, the main house is 65,000 square feet, with the other houses amassing a total of more than 10,000 square feet. This huge house has seen many celebrity guests and has famously been used as a backdrop in the Godfather films. Although originally a residence for the Hearst family, it was registered as a California State Park in 1957 and has been open for tourists to visit since.

Thoreauvian simple living: unelectrified, timeless tiny home

06:46
Seven years ago Diana and Michael Lorence moved to a 12-foot-square home without electricity in the coastal mountains of Northern California.  They're not back-to-the-land types- they're not growing their own food, nor raising animals-, but, like Thoreau, they were looking for a place where they could get away from the noise of society and focus on their inner lives. For nearly 30 years they have lived in tiny houses, often in guest homes, though their current abode is the smallest and most fitting their needs. It was designed by Michael based on their experiences living in nearly 20 tiny homes across the country before finally settling here.  They don't have electricity nor any other type of alternative energy (i.e. solar power). They don't have a refrigerator so they eat a lot of vegetables, fruits, grains and nuts.  There's also no oven, but Diana says she doesn't bake anyway and she cooks their meals with their one cast iron pot over the fire. The fire is also their source of hot water, heat and light (in addition to candles). The Lorences are a private couple, but recently they have begun to speak out more about their lives in hopes of showing others that options such as theirs exist. Until now, the couple has turned down requests appear on video, not wanting to be categorized as simply another couple choosing to live in a tiny space. So I was pleasantly surprised when Diana and Michael agreed to let me visit their home with my camera. The color of military uniforms, signs, vehicles, and world fashion spanning decades needs to be accounted for before even opening digital software like Photoshop. That means digging through sources like diaries, government records, old advertisements, and even consulting historical experts to get the colors right. But even after the arduous research, restoration, and blending of color, the image still isn’t finished. In order to achieve true photorealism, the physics of how light works in the atmosphere needs to be taken into account. Colors look different depending on the lighting conditions when the photo was taken, so artists rely on shadows and the location of light to make an educated guess about the time of day in a black-and-white photo. More than work: Tokyo office grows own food in vertical farm

10:13
In a country with very little arable land (only 12% compared with 20% in the US), in one of the most populated cities in the world, one company chose to give up 43,000 square feet of valuable workspace to grow food. In the Tokyo headquarters of human resources company Pasona Group they grow 200 species of fruits and vegetables and even rice that are harvested and served to employees. The indoor urban farm doesn’t just provide food, but by mixing work space and farm space, the company tries to provide a healthier quality of life for employees. Here green isn’t just a window dressing: immediately upon entering the building you walk over a 1,000-square-foot rice paddy, continue through an okra field and you enter the vine-covered “tomato guest room” or the “vegetable factory” filled with hundreds of hydroponic heads of lettuce. On the second floor, fruit trees form partition walls between meeting spaces, bean sprouts are grown under benches and herbs grow on shelving along the walls. Even the outside of the building is covered in plants helping keep the building cool in summer and warmer in winter. According to the farm’s designers Kono Designs, “it is the largest and most direct farm-to-table of its kind ever realized inside an office building in Japan.” Original story: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/more-than-work-tokyofice-grows-own-food-in-vertical-farm/
