Last season’s Prada men’s show (though now billed as men’s and women’s) took us to the high seas, and for SS17 again Miuccia Prada took us on a journey, citing travel and the blending of cultures as the key starting point for the collection. In a show space transformed into a mesh metal box lit with fluorescent lights Prada’s intrepid travellers filed out, replacing last season’s doomed sailors with a brighter sense of optimism, and focussing on spring’s hero piece – the rucksack.
The magic of Miuccia Prada is that from season to season you never know what you’ll get next. The creative polymath seamlessly flits from concept to concept for each new show, and yet with only a few short months between each you’re never left feeling like she could have given any more – a rarity in an industry that moves at breakneck speed and has suffered several casualties at top level in recent memory. But at Prada, the well never runs dry.
For SS17 Mrs P continued the theme of travel, but presented it in a completely different way to what we saw last season. Backstage she discussed the idea of interpreting “what is happening now” and the melding of cultures, and creating a collection to this effect. Clad in leggings or an easy tailored suit with socks and sandals the intrepid lot all shared one item in common – the rucksack. With what seemed like their life packed into it, each rucksack had a number smaller bags dangling from it, cagoules hanging from straps and even a second pair of shoes attached. Dress shoes for men and vinyl heels in red or pink for women, capable of changing the dynamic of the outfit in a matter of seconds if the wearer felt like swapping the roving hills for the club floor. Not billed as strictly a men’s show there were about as many women’s look on show as men’s, but then this has been the case at Prada now for several seasons, and as usual where Miuccia has lead others have followed. No doubt that will be the case again for the SS17 show – expect to see plenty of imitations in the coming months- but sadly for the rest, Miuccia Prada is inimitable. Source: Hunger TV.
