The fastest way to test this is to send samples into Amazon FBA and see how long it takes for them to sell. If the product sells within a week, the demand is probably very high. Some products need reviews before they take off. So don't let the one week test be the final test. The wider you spread your seed the greater your chance of seeing the fruit of our labor. Even if just one out of 10 products took off, if that product sold well, you'd make all your money back and then a whole lot more.

Despite the fact that water is the ultimate commodity product, these Madison Avenue masters have taken positioning a brand to a whole new level. Gone are worries about tying the brand back into priority features. This is an advertising task that begins with the ultimate blank slate: a pure, featureless, and ultimately uninteresting product. Marketing generic products like bottled water forces marketers to firmly ground their advertising in the place where all marketing should begin - the customer's experience of herself. When clients are ready to advertise, they will come to an agency typically having fallen in love with their own product. They don't typically ask themselves, "what is customer focus?" They believe that their product's feature set is divinely inspired to move customers and that their product is the obvious choice. The best television ads will take that dazzling product and temporarily set it aside. When positioning a brand, they will bring the customer's own sense of identity to the top marketing chain, then decide how that product furthers her own personal goals. Many marketers asked themselves, "what job is the customer hiring this product to do?" This clearly puts the marketing on a solid base of customer experience and forces both the agency and the client to put aside their own love of the product they worked so hard to create. The truth is that most customers treat the products they use as everyday commodities. From soap, to detergent, to beer, to coffee, we just don't think that much about purchases that we make. Most of our product preferences are grounded in gut instinct, not an objective comparison of features. We just like the product, and we don't think that much about why. The best advertising campaigns never forget this and always market from a customer-centric vantage point. This is the transcendent mindset that great marketers of generic products understand. Because their wares are the quintessential definition of an uninteresting product, the pretense of an exemplary feature set is gone. Everyone thinks they're one-of-a-kind, even though most products really aren't that much different. Now a few products really ARE revolution, like Dyson vacuums. That roller ball proves it's different! Or the greatest couch potato invention in history! Now there are some industries where new features are rolled out constantly, like the mobile phone business. The advertising must continually explain new calling plans and new features. Product feature marketing works great when the features are continually improving, but this is the exception, not the rule. The trick is to avoid one of marketing's biggest mistakes - crowing about a small product improvement that no one's gonna care about. So what do you do when you can't market the bells and whistles any more? Well look no further than that ultimately generic product - bottled water. They've created a brand out of absolutely nothing. Dasani is the rebellious, thrilling water for those who don't follow the rules, and are always looking for a walk on the wild side. Perrier is the risk taker's water. Danger is what they want from a bottle of water. Evian is the young water...This is water we're talking about here - totally generic - but these companies have built an entire persona, out of nothing. This is marketing built entirely on how the customer wants to see herself, not how she feels about water. So remember, take a hard, honest look at your product. Is it truly unique? If so, embrace that, and put your features out on display, but if not, then you should build your marketing from the customer's ego up, not from the product features down. As you come up with ideas for new products, you’ll need to consider whether each one of them is worth pursuing In other words, is there a good “Product-Market Fit.” The first thing to answer is whether there is a problem worth solving. Enough people have to need it AND be willing to pay for it. Your company has to be able to develop and eventually market a product that solves their problem in a compelling way that makes them want to buy it. If the answer is yes, then you need to decide whether your company has, or can build, the right capabilities to successfully bring the product to market. And finally, you need a business model that makes the company money and/or supports your overall strategy. Each corner of this triad has its own discovery process and changes to one corner can affect the other two. Think of it as spinning three plates: one in each hand and one on your foot. It’s hard to keep everything spinning and balanced at the same time. We’ll talk about Product Market Fit a lot in this course so that you become an expert in determining whether to bring new ideas to market. As you work through the first phase of the Optimal Product Process, which is the Conceive phase, it can help to foresee issues you might run into with regard to product market fit. Here we see a grid with four Product Market Fit “Uncertainty Quadrants.” Knowing which quadrant your product is in will help you set your strategy and approach to what the next steps should be. For both the Problem and Product Solution, you can either be in a defined or undefined state. Type I ideas have well-defined problems and solutions and you’re most likely optimizing or improving on an existing idea. If you have a well-defined problem, but the product is new, you fall into Type 2, which is Market Driven. This is where product management is really important. It’s an opportunity to discover customer problems that aren’t being solved today. Customers may not even realize they have a need. Type III is technology Driven. You may have a technology that your engineers have created and you’re looking for a problem to solve with it. Type IV, Visionary, is when both the problem AND the solution are undefined, but there may still be a unique opportunity. An example of this when it first came out was Twitter.

Contrary to common belief that the US government's 45-year-old embargo blocks all trade with the communist government, the United States is the top supplier of food and agricultural products to Cuba. In fact, many Cubans depend on rations grown in Arkansas and North Dakota for their rice and beans. Since December 1999, governors, senators and congressmen from at least 28 U.S. states have visited Cuba, most to talk trade. On Monday, Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman arrived in Havana with a farm delegation. "This has been a very significant and a very meaningful relationship for our state. It's been a terrific opportunity for us to look at an expanded relationship," Heineman told reporters. "That's why we're down here again. That's why I've been here three times now, probably more than any Governor of all 50 Governors," he added. Maine state's Governor John Baldacci travelled to Cuba in late 2005 to complete agreements to export 10 million (m) US dollars' worth of Maine-produced seed potatoes, lumber and fish to the island nation. Maine's legislature in 2002 passed a resolution, backed by farmers, to lift a trade embargo and normalise relations with Cuba. Washington's sanctions choke off most trade with Cuba, but a law passed by Congress in 2000 authorised cash-only purchases of U.S. food and agricultural products. It was cheered by major U.S. farm firms like Archer Daniels Midland Company interested in the untapped Cuban market. Cuba refused to import one grain of rice for more than a year because of a dispute over financing, but finally agreed to take advantage of the law after Hurricane Michelle in November 2001 cut into its food stocks. Since then, Cuba has paid more than 1.5 billion (b) US dollars for American food and agricultural products, said John Kavulich, senior policy adviser at the U.S.-Cuba Trade and Economic Council of New York. The 340 million (m) US dollars in exports in 2006 represented a drop of about three percent from 2005, which was down from nearly 392 million (m) US dollars in 2004. Some believe American interest in Cuba's new oil exploration efforts could change the political tide. How do they work individually, and how do they work together? Starting off, Product Discovery’s purpose is to help you find incredible products to sell. It’s difficult coming up with new product ideas, and YouProduct Discovery helps pull out the GREAT ones. You input what you’re looking for, click search, and build a list of relevant and incredible markets you didn’t even know existed. There are four ways to find products with Product Discovery. On top of finding new products for you, Product Discovery also gives you the chance to do a number of other things. Full brand breakdowns allow you to either pull up brands that are doing well, or type in a competing brand to keep an eye on the competition and replicate other brand’s success. Full subcategory breakdowns allow you to see how entire categories or subcategories are performing. Product Discovery lets you dig into data to not only make smart sourcing decisions, but to keep up to date on what’s happening in each market and with your competition. Product Discovery gives you the idea for the product, and Market Intelligence helps you dig into even MORE data for the product market. You’ll use Market Intelligence to either say - “Hey, this actually IS a great market” - OR - “Nope, this market SUCKS”. If Product Discovery is step one, Market Intelligence is step 2. Find the product with Product Discovery, validate it with Market Intelligence. Now, you can also use Market Intelligence to validate an idea of your own. If you have an idea for a market, but you found it outside of Product Discovery, you can plug it into Market Intelligence, and look at the data to say either of the same thing - “YEP” or “NOPE”. Alright, so Product Discovery was step 1. Market Intelligence is step 2. Keyword Research is present, and should be used, throughout the research process. It IS it’s own ‘step three’, however is also involved in ‘Steps 1-3’ . It’s purpose is to help you really dig into two primary things: search volume and relevant keywords. Simply put, it is it’s own tool, and has its own step in the product research process, but is directly integrated into both Product Discovery and Market Intelligence to be involved throughout the entire research process. As you’re using product discovery to find product markets, you’ll be able to use Keyword Research to see exactly how many people are searching for that market. As youre using Market Intelligence, you’ll be able to do the exact same thing. On its own, however, plugging in a keyword will bring up the most relevant keywords to build out your listing. You’ll be able to see exact search volume, search trends, and a whole lot more. With Listing builder, you’ll also be able to plug your ASINs listing in directly, and use the tool to build-out your products listing using a combination of our search algorithms and exact search volume from Amazon. Keyword research you’ll be using in conjunction with Product Discovery and Market Intelligence to see exactly whether people are searching for those products or not, and you’ll be using it on its own to look up other, extremely relevant and valuable keywords as well as build out your listing. Experts predict growing competition in Africa as technology companies and others attempt to meet the needs of young and middle class populations. DHL calls itself the "logistics company for the world." Logistics is the process of planning complex activities involving people and resources. DHL provides transportation by train, road, sea and air. The company sees Africa as a place where its business can expand. But, for that to happen, more international companies will need to invest and set up operations there. Sumesh Rahavendra is with DHL. He says there is a lot of evidence of growing operations by multinational companies in Africa. They include SAP, IBM and Hisense, a Chinese state-owned company. Sumesh Rahavendra is the company's head of marketing for sub-Saharan Africa. He says the area offers many possibilities for growth. He points out that many people who never used a desktop computer are now using tablets and smartphones. He describes the continent's one billion people as a largely untouched market for many kinds of products.DHL has been operating in Africa for more than 35 years. Sumesh Rahavendra predicts that as more and more companies set up operations in Africa, DHL's business will increase. DHL says Africa is now the world's second largest mobile technology market, by connections, after Asia. In addition, it is the fastest growing mobile communications market in the world. Today we’re going to be talking about product market fit and how it’s an undervalued role or skill set for a search marketer. If you’re in SEO or PPC, learning how to reposition the solutions, products, or services the organization you work for or with is a vital role to how you accomplish success. Today, we’re going to talk about how you can do that for yourself or for your company. Marketing is all about finding a niche or customer base and serving them better than anyone else. That’s how a lot of people treat their businesses. They ask themselves, “Okay, what are we going to be the best in the world at and who are the people we can be the best in the world for?” This isn’t a bad business principle. We try to focus on working with B2B and enterprise. The problem is if you’re doing search marketing in a very narrow niche, it’s oftentimes difficult to generate the volume of traffic necessary to get your opportunities, leads, and revenue to match your goals. For example, if only 100 people a month are looking for the service you offer, it’s going to be difficult to get the 100 leads your CEO or VP of Sales want. With that in mind, let’s talk about how you can leverage your product market fit while expanding your audience to increase volume. Understand the Broader Category First, we need to understand the broader category that we exist within. For example, at Directive Consulting we are a B2B SEO agency. Unfortunately, that has only a couple hundred people searching it a month. We need to ask ourselves, “Okay, does the broader market even know that a B2B-only solution exists? If they don’t, where can we position ourselves so that when they’re looking for it unknowingly, we can stand out?” What we do is look at the search engine results page for “SEO agency“, “SEO company“, and “SEO service” related keywords — the broader category that we exist in. For yourself, maybe you’re a very specific type of cybersecurity company. You only do endpoint protection but you know that there are not enough people looking for endpoint protection every month for you to hit your sales goals. What you want to do is go broader into the cybersecurity category and figure out to reposition your endpoint protection deliverable to stand out from the competition. We need to think broad and stand out with our ideal customer persona through our unique selling proposition. Third Party Sites One of the best ways to do this is to go to third-party sites. We talk about this a lot here. For our industry, it’s Clutch, 10 Best SEO, and other sites like that. For your industry, it might be Capterra, Software Advice, G2 Crowd. Whatever that is, we want to figure out the broader category that we exist in and then use our product name, callouts, or our titles to differentiate it. These areas are opportunities to stand out and make our brand unique so that our ideal customer persona sees that and says, “Wow, I never even knew that solution existed but that’s exactly what I wanted” — then process to click on our ad or site. Using Product Fit to Increase Volume Hacks Now, before I finish I want to give you a couple little hacks. Write Content For Industry’s Trade Publications One way to really improve your brand awareness in search and to be able to control industry conversations is to take the broad keywords for the categories you exist in and write content on your industry’s trade publications. For example, I wanted to rank number one for “B2B SEO” but I didn’t think I could do that with my own website. So, I wrote “A Fresh Perspective on B2B SEO” for Search Engine Land, knowing that if I took a more authoritative site and could write for them that I could start to rank for the broader category of keywords for my business. I could then start to control the conversation around B2B SEO so that our service offering stands out compared to the rest of the conversation. Don’t write to CIO about of your new product or some thought piece you have, but to write the definitive guide on endpoint protection for CIO. So that you could rank number one for endpoint protection — via their site — so that you’re able to control the conversation of what people are looking for when it comes to endpoint protection. By doing this, your endpoint protection software solution service stands out, is driving traffic, leads, and revenue — all because of how you positioned your product in the greater market.
