Classical Management Theory
Classical Management Theory, broadly speaking, is based upon Henri Fayol, Frederick Taylor, and Max Weber's overlapping management theories. These three management theories came together to form what we generally refer to nowadays as Classical Management Theory. Virtually all areas of organizational studies from management, to business, to organizational communication put these three theorists at the foundation of most modern day organizations for developing theories of 1) Administrative science, 2) Scientific Management, and 3) Bureaucracy. Taken together, they form the basis for how we organizational structures and relationships between managers and employes. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1433131234/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=1433131234&linkId=6bfd9c333c786d16025c5a7c70a3ef4c The Organizational Communication Channel provides supplemental lessons for traditional, hybrid, and 100% online courses for students and teachers everywhere. Social Media & Public Relations: Innovative Strategies for a New Age
Just about every Public Relations agency and client department claims that it is integrating social media into its practices -- but using these new tools effectively is far more complex than simply reducing a press release to a 140-character Tweet. Embracing this technology also requires changing mindsets about how clients and stakeholders should share information and opinion, and the role PR professionals should play in shaping that new dialogue. What are the most innovative strategies to enhance the role of Public Relations in this new age, and what are the smartest ways to approach social media engagement? Key questions discussed in this panel: Is social media having a truly significant, measurable impact on how reputations are built and managed -- or have we all just fallen for the hype? As PR agencies continue to advise their clients to become more transparent and directly engage their stakeholders, what added value can PR professionals provide? What are the next key trends in social media that will shake up the way PR professionals facilitate dialogue between organizations and their stakeholders? Watch it all here!

Kenneth Owler Smith Symposium - PR's Hottest Trends, Practices and Perceptions
April 5, 2012: The 22nd Annual Kenneth Owler Smith Symposium - "PR's Hottest Trends, Practices and Perceptions: Key Findings from USC's Seventh Generally Accepted Practices (GAP) Study" USC Annenberg and the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Los Angeles present the 22nd annual Kenneth Owler Smith Symposium. Jerry Swerling, director of PR Studies, will be leading the presentation of the results of the USC Annenberg Strategic Communication and PR Center's seventh Generally Accepted Practices (GAP) Study. Joining him will be assistant professor Kjerstin Thorson and associate professor and associate director of the Strategic Communication and Public Relations Center Burghardt Tenderich. GAP, which is the most comprehensive and in-depth study of the PR/Strategic Communication field, will help practitioners at all levels better understand the rapid and revolutionary changes the profession is going through and successfully adapt to them. It provides actionable data on important issues like use and control of social media, budget size and allocation, evaluation methods, organizational structure, working with agencies, and many others. More than 620 senior level professionals - a record number - participated in GAP VII, in large part because of support provided by PRSA, the Arthur W. Page Society, the Institute for PR, and IABC. That unprecedented level of industry-wide support, and the huge response it created, means that the GAP VII data can be relied on when making the case for PR. About the Zimmerman School of Advertising and Mass Communications
The Zimmerman School of Advertising and Mass Communications at the University of South Florida is located in the Tampa Bay metro area, the 11th largest media market in the country with abundant opportunities for internships with media organizations, public relations firms, advertising agencies, professional sports teams, and other major organizations. Our students also benefit from relationships with on-campus organizations and departments such as University Communications and Marketing, the USF College of Health Sciences, the USF Department of Athletics, WBUL-AM radio and our award-winning campus newspaper, The Oracle. Our students are also active in School of Mass Communication clubs such as the AdClub, the Walter E. Griscti Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), and Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) that provide extensions of classroom learning and the opportunity to network with professionals. We want students to be achievers in the classroom and in professional workplace. With over 1,300 undergraduate majors, we're large enough for a "critical mass" of students who work collaboratively on projects in professional communications and media, but small enough for individual attention. Our accomplished faculty provide a balance of academic and professional credentials and emphasize "hands-on" instruction in advertising, multimedia journalism and production, and public relations. At its core, the Zimmerman School of Advertising & Mass Communications emphasizes strategic thinking, persuasive speaking and presentations, clear and compelling writing, and the use of digital media in professional communications and media distribution. Our curriculum is a blend of theory and practice and introduces students to the theories, principles, and practices of professional communications and media based on the concept of freedom of information as the cornerstone of constitutional democracy. Our curriculum and faculty prepares students for current and future positions in professional communications and media and for future leadership roles in professional communications and media. With an active and accomplished list of alumni, our graduates of the Zimmerman School of Advertising & Mass Communications understand the structure and functions of mass media systems as well as the basic processes of professional communication. Students specialize in an area of mass communications (advertising, multimedia journalism and production, or public relations) to blend a strong introduction to theoretical orientation with professional skills. Our modern facilities mirror the workplace. Our goal is student success. We are here to prepare you for your first professional position and to prepare you for a lifetime of success. TVAD Talk, Nick Lovegrove: Crisis Communication: BP’s public relations after Deepwater Horizon
Wednesday October 8th 2014 – Nick Lovegrove, ‘Crisis Communication: A visual history of BP’s use of public relations after the Deepwater Horizon accident’ The project I will introduce is part of a larger body of work I created whilst conducting my MA in 2012. After extensive research, I produced a series of rhetorical pieces of design that explored how graphic design's techniques of persuasion could be used to expose and critique the Public Relations industry. They attempted to explain the nature, history, practices and ethics of the industry to the public, drawing attention to the way organisations attempt to control and manipulate their public image. One of these outcomes was a book that acts as a critical reaction to BP's crisis management of the Deepwater Horizon accident. Using the firm's own press releases, commissioned imagery and publicly available data I created a one-off publication that acts as a timeline charting the company's response to the disaster. After presenting the project at a conference at LCC in August, this method of visually documenting an event has resulted in a number of potential collaborations with academics from varying fields who usually rely on the written word to communicate their practice. This takes graphic design away from its usual commercial constraints, towards a wider role as a research tool.

One of the best exercises for you to do is make a list of companies or businesses that you go back to over and over and over again, and ask yourself why. On the left, list five companies you return to again and again, and on the right write the reason for doing so. For instance, on the left write, "I go to this restaurant at least once a week" and on the right write, "I go there because _____________."
