Oracle SQL Tutorial 22 - Why Primary Keys Shouldn't Change
In the last video I mentioned that with our database design it is important to make sure that nobody tries to update a user's username. What happens if they do? Nothing horrible, Oracle will just throw an error. That's not such a big deal, but if you are hoping to make some kind of application that allows someone to change their username, this is not the best set up. Why? If you look at the projects table, we have a foreign key that references the username. Let's assume for a moment that Oracle allows you to do anything with your data. That means that if a user updates their username, there will be projects created by users that don't exist. Or a user could change their name to the previous owner. To fix this problem, we would need something such as an ON UPDATE CASCADE command for our foreign key. That would mean that if the user updated their username, the columns that reference that username would also update to the new value. This exists in some database management systems, but this does not exist in Oracle at the time of this video. How do we get around this problem? I'm sure we could conjure up something to allow us to update the username, but the easiest solution is to reference the user_id instead of the username. That way, when the username is updated, nothing changes inside of the foreign key. As a general rule, primary keys should never change. Foreign keys CAN change, but they should not change because a primary key changed. So, if we did happen to use a username as a column, it would be frowned upon if the username had to change because the column it references changes. However, it would be acceptable to change the foreign key if we needed to point to a new entity in the users table. Even if a username is never intended to change, these complications bother a lot of people. You can mitigate these problems by only referencing surrogate keys in foreign keys. This has the downside though that when you retrieve the data, you are going to have to do more work to make the data readable. For example, we had a table that was called project_users. It is essentially a table that says what users are part of what projects. We could have the foreign keys reference the project's name and the user's username. Then when you could say SELECT * FROM project_users. The data would be completely readable without doing anything. If you switch to only referencing surrogate primary keys, you will have a bunch of random numbers that don't mean anything and will have to be joined with other tables…which is really super frustrating when later you have to join a thousand tables to read anything. Which side do you prefer? Pick a side. Choose wisely. ID column in Departments table is not the primary Key and DepartmentId column in Employees table is not the foreign key. But we can still join these tables using ID column from Departments table and DepartmentId column from Employees table, as both the columns involved in the join have same data type i.e int. Select Employees.Name as EmployeeName, Departments.Name as DepartmentName from Employees join Departments on Departments.ID = Employees.DepartmentId The obious next question is, if primary foreign key relation is not mandatory for 2 tables to be joined then what is the use of these keys? Primary key enforces uniqueness of values over one or more columns. Since ID is not a primary key in Departments table, 2 or more departments may end up having same ID value, which makes it impossible to distinguish between them based on the ID column value. Foreign key enforces referential integrity. Without foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, it is possible to insert a row into Employees table with a value for DepartmentId column that does not exist in Departments table. The following insert statement, successfully inserts a new Employee into Employees table whose DepartmentId is 100. But we don't have a department with ID = 100 in Departments table. This means this employee row is an orphan row, and the referential integrity is lost as result Insert into Employees values (8, 'Mary', 'Female', 80000, 100) If we have had a foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, the following insert statement would have failed with the following error. Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint. The conflict occurred in database "Sample", table "dbo.Departments", column 'ID'.

This version was announced last month, but it was only yesterday that the installation DVD images appeared on public mirrors. From the release announcement: "Oracle is pleased to announce the general availability of Oracle Linux 7 Update 4 for x86-64 servers. What's new? Enhancements to Oracle Linux 7 included in this update are included for several key areas, including security, support for Cloud and Container environments, and performance. Oracle Linux 7 Update 4 continues to enhance your security stance with several new capabilities. UEFI Secure Boot - a system in Secure Boot mode loads only those boot loaders and kernels that have been signed by Oracle. Oracle has updated the kernel and GRUB 2 packages to sign them with a valid Extended Validation (EV) certificate. The EV certificate has been compiled into the shim binary and has been signed by Microsoft. The basic program unit in PL/SQL is the block. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords partition the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. Example of a Block DECLARE bonus NUMBER(8,2); emp_id NUMBER(6) := 100; BEGIN SELECT salary * 0.10 INTO bonus FROM employees WHERE employee_id = emp_id; Exception When NO_DATA_FOUND THEN null ; END; This is a typical PL/SQL block where 10% of salary is selected and stored on a temp variables bonus. If for some reason there is no employee with empid = 100 then the control will come to exception area and the code in the exception area will be executed. These blocks can be entirely separate or nested one within another. The basic units (procedures and functions, also known as subprograms, and anonymous blocks) that make up a PL/SQL program are logical blocks, which can contain any number of nested sub blocks. Therefore, one block can represent a small part of another block, which in turn can be part of the whole unit of code. Anonymous Blocks Anonymous blocks are unnamed blocks. They are declared at the point in an application where they are to be executed and are passed to the PL/SQL engine for execution at run time. You can embed an anonymous block within a pre-compiler program and within iSQL*Plus or Server Manager. Triggers in Oracle Developer components consist of such blocks. Subprograms Subprograms are named PL/SQL blocks that can accept parameters and can be invoked. You can declare them either as procedures or as functions. Generally use a procedure to perform an action and a function to compute a value. You can store subprograms at the server or application level. Using Oracle Developer components (Forms, Reports, and Graphics), you can declare procedures and functions as part of the application (a form or report) and call them from other procedures, functions, and triggers (see next page) within the same application whenever necessary. Note: A function is similar to a procedure, except that a function must return a value.

03 Dead Lock in oracle database
DML Locks DML locks or data locks guarantee the integrity of data being accessed concurrently by multiple users. DML locks help to prevent damage caused by interference from simultaneous conflicting DML or DDL operations. By default, DML statements acquire both table-level locks and row-level locks. The reference for each type of lock or lock mode is the abbreviation used in the Locks Monitor from Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM). For example, OEM might display TM for any table lock within Oracle rather than show an indicator for the mode of table lock (RS or SRX). Row Locks (TX) Row-level locks serve a primary function to prevent multiple transactions from modifying the same row. Whenever a transaction needs to modify a row, a row lock is acquired by Oracle. There is no hard limit on the exact number of row locks held by a statement or transaction. Also, unlike other database platforms, Oracle will never escalate a lock from the row level to a coarser granular level. This row locking ability provides the DBA with the finest granular level of locking possible and, as such, provides the best possible data concurrency and performance for transactions. The mixing of multiple concurrency levels of control and row level locking means that users face contention for data only whenever the same rows are accessed at the same time. Furthermore, readers of data will never have to wait for writers of the same data rows. Writers of data are not required to wait for readers of these same data rows except in the case of when a SELECT... FOR UPDATE is used. Writers will only wait on other writers if they try to update the same rows at the same point in time. In a few special cases, readers of data may need to wait for writers of the same data. For example, concerning certain unique issues with pending transactions in distributed database environments with Oracle. Transactions will acquire exclusive row locks for individual rows that are using modified INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements and also for the SELECT with the FOR UPDATE clause. Modified rows are always locked in exclusive mode with Oracle so that other transactions do not modify the row until the transaction which holds the lock issues a commit or is rolled back. In the event that the Oracle database transaction does fail to complete successfully due to an instance failure, then Oracle database block level recovery will make a row available before the entire transaction is recovered. The Oracle database provides the mechanism by which row locks acquire automatically for the DML statements mentioned above. Whenever a transaction obtains row locks for a row, it also acquires a table lock for the corresponding table. Table locks prevent conflicts with DDL operations that would cause an override of data changes in the current transaction. Table Locks (TM) What are table locks in Oracle? Table locks perform concurrency control for simultaneous DDL operations so that a table is not dropped in the middle of a DML operation, for example. When Oracle issues a DDL or DML statement on a table, a table lock is then acquired. As a rule, table locks do not affect concurrency of DML operations. Locks can be acquired at both the table and sub-partition level with partitioned tables in Oracle. A transaction acquires a table lock when a table is modified in the following DML statements: INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, SELECT with the FOR UPDATE clause, and LOCK TABLE. These DML operations require table locks for two purposes: to reserve DML access to the table on behalf of a transaction and to prevent DDL operations that would conflict with the transaction. Any table lock prevents the acquisition of an exclusive DDL lock on the same table, and thereby prevents DDL operations that require such locks. For example, a table cannot be altered or dropped if an uncommitted transaction holds a table lock for it. A table lock can be held in any of several modes: row share (RS), row exclusive (RX), share (S), share row exclusive (SRX), and exclusive (X). The restrictiveness of a table lock's mode determines the modes in which other table locks on the same table can be obtained and held.
