Hygge is a Danish term defined as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” In the past year, this concept of Scandinavian coziness has made inroads with an international audience. At least six books about hygge were published in the United States this year, with more to come in 2017. Author of the international best-seller The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking takes VICE News on a hygge tour of Copenhagen coffee shops, library gardens and wine bars that epitomize the lifestyle trend. The Danish company VIPP (famous for its iconic 1939 wastebasket, now in the MOMA) has created a prefab tiny home designed down to the last detail (flashlight included). Their 592-square-foot “plug and play getaway” wasn’t designed to blend into nature, but to float above it; fifty thousand pounds of glass and steel serve as a frame for the surrounding landscape. VIPP designer Morten Bo Jensen explains that the shelter wasn’t designed as a piece of architecture, but an industrial object. The prefab structure is built in a factory and the four modules are transported by truck to the site. The shelter can be constructed in 3 to 5 days using just bolts for the modules and 9,000 screws for the steel plates. The small prefab can house 4 people: 2 on a daybed and 2 in a loft bedroom. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls slide open and closed with mechanical rollers, designed to move the 400 or 500-kilo doors with ease. “We kind of like this idea that you just grab it and slide it open,” explains Jensen, “instead of motorized solutions that would be more different from our philosophy of very mechanical products that just last for a long time.” https://www.vipp.com/en/shelter/the-vipp-shelter/ Original story: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/vipp-shelter-tiny-prefab-as-precise-industrial-era-appliance/

Scandinavian or Nordic style is very attractive and fashionable today because it's rustic, minimalist and cozy at the same time. Scandinavian style is amazing for Christmas décor as Scandinavian people know well what a real winter is. Natural wood, black and white, fir tree wreaths and rustic lanterns compose a classical Nordic décor. Wanna some color? Add red berries, fabric tree ornaments, stockings and carpets. Nature touches look amazing: natural wood accessories, tree branches, fir tree decorations, pine cone accessories and the place will get a cozy and inviting touch. In 1904, Danish silversmith Georg Jensen (1866–1935) founded one of the world’s most celebrated design companies: the eponymous Georg Jensen. After emerging during a fruitful period in Danish art and culture, Jensen’s practice in Copenhagen continued to evolve, contributing to the meteoric rise of Scandinavian design in the United States and around the world. This exhibition—the first major American presentation of Jensen silver tableware and products for the home—tells a sweeping story of the creation of a global identity for Danish design and the changing ideals for modern living across the 20th century. ”We make furniture for people – the customer can decide for themselves if the chair ends up in a home or an office,” says Swedese managing director Peter Jiseborn. Monica Förster’s at first simple-looking Breeze table is a typical Swedese product – cool, formal but with an irregularity – a wave – that makes it immediately memorable. ”It’s a detail completely devoid of function, but it adds magic,” says Jiseborn. “And if you know laminating technology, you know that it’s impossible to bend a detail into a table without the rest being affected.” Thus the wave is manufactured separately, then embossed into an existing table surface that is either copper or lacquered in white or black. The table harks back to the company’s founding idea; to create advanced, expressive furniture that is uncopyable.

Scandinavian Design is characterized by a seeming simplicity; though the complexities behind this careful aesthetic should not be underestimated. See Jonas' story and images here: https://www.phaseone.com/Jonas-Bjerre-Poulsen-Minimalism.aspx Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen is one of the founders of Norm Architects. He’s also a significant name in photography. Jonas uses Phase One equipment and we spoke with him about the Scandinavian design concept to find the bridge between his creation of minimalist physical spaces as an architect, and capturing these same spaces as a photographer. "In our designs, we always strive to balance — between richness and restraint, between order and complexity. In most Scandinavian designs, there are always details that take the product beyond the strictly simple and give it something extra. We try to reach a point where there is nothing to add and nothing to take away that can make the product better. We also focus very much on the quality of the details. As the American Designer, Charles Eames said; “Details are not details. It is the details that make the product.” – and when working with minimalism, this is very much the case. I think I have carried this design ethos with me into the world of photography.” Jonas on Scandinavian design and minimalism: "Scandinavian minimalism is not a modern style. Minimalism has been the norm in many cultures all over the globe since the beginning of civilization. Reduction and perfection has been the main goal for both craftsmen and inventors - because avoiding the irrelevant means emphasizing the important. All too often people think of architecture and design in terms of added grandness. But it is often the plain or the reduced that is most striking. In our work, we aim for a geometrical purity, a simple naturalness and a humble authenticity for a spatial sense of calm and repose. We want to arrive at the maximum of expressivity with the minimum of expression. We try to balance the visual, the tactile and the sensual to create an unusual but harmonious experience. We bridge the masculine and the feminine with an obsessive attention to detail. Our style is almost a non-style, which I think can be understood and appreciated by all people regardless of cultural preferences.” Jonas used the Phase One XF Camera System with IQ3 100MP Digital Back and Schneider Kreuznach lenses to capture Scandinavian minimalism. A small village on the east coast of Jutland is the setting for this tiny house on a foundation. Designed and built just last year by contractor Simon Steffensen, the home has a Scandinavian Modern flair to it. The exterior is black-stained wood, a traditional choice in Scandinavia, but here it was given a modern twist with perfectly-aligned rows of stainless steel fasteners, like contrasting stitching on a pair of black jeans. Generous overhangs protect the entry and shade the large glass areas on the south side, while the other two sides have no overhang at all. The front overhang appears flat but behind the fascia it actually slopes to the side, acting as a concealed gutter for the main roof. With only 24 m2 (258 ft2) inside, the tiny house is one room except for the bathroom. The vaulted ceiling and fully-glazed front wall does make it look reasonably spacious inside, though most people would probably want more of a kitchen than the tiny kitchenette in place now. The pared-back design with white walls, light wood and pale blue accents make for a pretty standard Scandinavian interior design. In one unique move though, the oak plank flooring was carried up the back wall. The sleeping loft’s ceiling looks high enough that some people will be able to stand below the ridge. For taller folks, at least there is plenty of headroom for sitting up in bed. This tiny house is currently for sale with an asking price of 485,000 Danish kroner, or roughly US$74,000. http://www.nybolig.dk/fritidshus/8400/sivsangervej/106199/e51274 Photographs courtesy of Nybolig. http://id.com.sg/discussion/671 Mixing a modern and Scandinavian interior style with a Victorian interior is something that few can pull off. The risk is that some people throw in bunch of cast-offs from their grandparents into a modern design home and expect perfection. The trick is to mix styles but in a well thought out way, not throwing and mixing things together. You sure do not want messy furniture. Let’s look at the examples. In the living room, you have clean, neat elements, mostly modern, but then you have the television cabinet fitted nicely and elegantly. The cabinet is clearly the retro, Victorian element, while everything else is modern. The dining table is another element that looks like it has come from the house of your grandparents. But the best part about the apartment and its design is the singled out glass office room. Another perfectly carried out mixture. The parquet is usually reserved for retro designs, but it fits just right in the modern room. And unlike other modern styles, the room is actually crowded with elements, a characteristic of the Victorian style. Once you get to the living room, you have the Modern Victorian style at its full display with rich colors and romantic atmosphere. (4 Nov 2016) LEAD IN: Scandinavian-themed decorations and muted colours - such as silver and grey - are a top trend when it comes to Christmas interiors this festive season. Exhibitors at London's annual Spirit of Christmas fair say less is more this year when it comes to choosing decorations. STORY-LINE: It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the annual Spirit of Christmas fair in London, but this is perhaps one UK visitors aren't so familiar with. The week-long event is hosting a collection of around 750 independent boutiques, many indulging in the latest trend for Scandinavian-style interior design. That includes London-based Danish Collection, which started when director Judith Jorgensen moved from Denmark to the UK. Many of the items on display here delight in 'Hygge', a Danish word for a cosy home ambience. "The Danes are very much about a little bit less is more," says Jorgensen. "So, we like very intricate details, we like designs, we like that a lot of hours have gone into the designs as well and the colours are not necessarily traditional red, blues and greens, we do mix it up with silver, we do a lot of gold as well, gold is coming back in as a trend. "And I really don't think there isn't colours that you can't do for Christmas, but it's about the right mix of colours, so it's about not having it in a right big old mess but, actually very fine-tuning the colours so they sit very nicely up against each other." And Danish Collection isn't the only one. Not far away, Naasgransgarden Swedish Designers are exhibiting a collection of quirky Scandinavian-themed Christmas decorations, including small Santa Claus figures and flying cow tree decorations. "I think what's in trend this year is very much Scandinavian goods," says Liselotte Osugo, the UK agent of Naasgransgarden Swedish Designers. "There's a trend in the general market within interiors and in TV and in lifestyle that's very much Scandinavian." Osugo says when it comes to Christmas, nowadays it's less about glitter and more focused on muted colours and fairy-tale themes. "We are seeing more sort of fairytale, traditional stuff, less glitter, less shiny lights, more traditional greys, dolls, dog collars, that sort of thing," she says. Even UK-based companies are embracing the trend for Scandinavian design. Cheshire-based Project Rudolph is exhibiting this collection of alpine, rustic, chalet-themed decorations. It includes sewn tartan baubles and decorative wooden ice skates. Owner Sarah West says seemingly traditional Christmas decorations, such as tinsel, are now a thing of the past. "When you say traditional Christmas, tinsel is probably quite old fashioned these days, we've never done anything tinselly or kind of old style, baubles, that kind of thing," she says. "It's all kind of warm, jute colours, tartans, just kind of natural products that we use where we can." Fair manager, Thi Dinh says the Scandinavian trend is linked to other areas, including fashion and homeware. "I mean, certainly Scandinavian design is more on trend at the moment, anyway cleaner lines, more graphics and prints," she says. "So it's certainly translating to the decorations side of things, but you can see that across fashion as well as homeware as well." The annual week-long fair opened 31 October and expects to welcome around 50,000 visitors over the seven days. Dinh says consumers are starting their Christmas shopping earlier and earlier every year. That's linked to big department stores unveiling their Christmas displays in summer. "It's certainly the case that more people are getting organised for Christmas shopping much earlier," she says. Spirit of Christmas fair runs 31 October - 6 November at London's Olympia exhibition centre.
