The Schwinn Traveler and Traveler III, mid-20th century touring bikes built in Japan, get the once-over from BikemanforU. Free shipping on new bike parts for your old vintage bicycle at http://www.bikemanforu.com Featuring lugged carbon steel frames, Shimano gearing, they were part of Schwinn's "X-Tra Lite" series from the late '70s and into the 1980s. The Traveler was still being built as late as 1991. These two road models were brought into Bike 'n Kite by different customers for tune-up and repair. Both Pearl blue models with randonneur handlebar, "dual-position brakes" with safety levers, and 27-inch alloy rims. Their components are very similar, featuring parts from Shimano and Dia Compe. BikemanforU notes the Traveler's weighted pedal and Shimano 400 derailleur. These "Schwinn-Approved" bikes were built in Japan for Schwinn in Chicago, according to the head badges. These particular models are 10-speeds, though the Traveler III went on to evole as a 12-speed and even a 14-speed 700c touring bike with a Cro-Mo frame by the late 1980s. Or because a magnet sticks to it. Recorded on 10/24/2016, which was a day when I had so many other things to do that I shouldn't have been making goofy bike videos in the city, but the thing was on my bike rack and I was down there anyway, so fuck it.

This video could be called, "Book Lady Assembles a Bicycle" - for the first time in her life. But I wanted to put the name of the bike in the title. Besides, I didn't put video of me actually assembling the bike in this video - that was done off-camera. You'll see. So far, I absolutely LOVE this bicycle. It is moderately low-priced but much better quality than the bike I owned before. The other one was fairly flimsy compared to the Sanctuary, which feels solid and reliable in comparison. I shed a little blood while fixing the brakes, and lots of sweat... NO TEARS... I didn't get that frustrated. Oh, the first day there was some frustration when I realized I didn't have the TOOLS I needed to put it together. If anyone on Amazon had mentioned that I needed a variety of tools like allen wrenches and a cable cutter, I would have bought them when I bought the bike, and been prepared to put it together. But no, I had no clue until the bike arrived, and then I had to walk two and a half miles to Walmart to get the tools I needed. That was sort of a let-down because I was really looking forward to riding that bike rather than ever having to make that long walk again. I'm a bit burnt out on walking right now. I want to ride. Well, you see, when I walk, it takes me most of an hour to get to Walmart. That's one way. But riding a bike, I can go about one mile every ten minutes, so it takes about 25 minutes to get to Walmart, and no foot pain. So far I've put thirteen miles on the new bike without any mechanical problems at all whatsoever. I'm very happy about that. The first time I took it out... everything went wrong. I didn't have the seat tight enough, the tires were flat, and the rear brakes didn't work at all. I adjusted everything, and since then it has been working perfectly. I aired up the tires with a tiny little bicycle hand pump I keep with me when I'm riding. I like to be prepared. It took a long time to pump up those tires with the pump so small, but I finally did it - then took it for a ride all the way to the Washington state border and back. Honestly, I have a long ways to go before I'll be ready for a long bike ride. I'm so disappointed that I'm not in better condition by now. I think the pathetic quality of my other bike kept me from wanting to ride much this year. And now the weather is starting to turn cold, and I'm not strong enough to ride 20 miles let alone the 40 miles it would probably take to get all the way from the Washington-Idaho border to Coeur d'Alene and back in one day. I'm not saying I'm giving up. I'm just reconsidering my September activities. I need to ride more frequently and get myself into better shape so I can do what I intended. Never say fail... that's my motto. Well, one of them, anyhow. Bike riding is such an awesome hobby. I'm glad I'm doing this. ... This is a women's Schwinn Suburban that we restored here at Just Riding Along in Bradford, PA. The bike was missing some original parts, so we did a Resto-Rod treatment. The hubs were laced to Velocity Deep V rims with Wheelsmith 14g stainless spokes and brass nipples. Continental 700 x 38 City Ride tires were mounted to the new hoops. We improved the brake system with Tektro levers and long-reach dual-pivot calipers and Jagwire stainless cables and lined housing. The Crank is a Dimension brand Chrome one-piece with a 40 tooth single chainwheel. We used a KMC rustbuster chain and a SunRace Chrome plated six-speed freewheel. The Shifter is a SRAM MRX six-speed index unit which controls the Shimano Altus Derailleur--mounted with a Sun-Race adapter since the frame has no built in hanger. The hubs, headset, stem, and handlebar are the original polished aluminum and chrome finishes. The seatpost is a cheap Wald unit with the step up head to run standard saddles. The saddle is a Bontrager Satellite comfort gel unit, and the grips are ODI flangeless BMX grips (shortened on the shifter side) This was a fun build. A lot of time went into polishing and cleaning, but the cost of the parts was not too bad... probably under $300 or so, not counting labor. This is the type of project that is more a labor of love that we did during the slow season in the shop for fun. These bikes are not really too collectable, and you can find decent stock bikes like this for $20 to $150 if they're nicely cleaned up and not too rusty....so we put more into this bike than what it's technically worth, but we came up with something very unique and fun to ride. Something that no one else will have on cruiser night! We hope you enjoy and can get some ideas for your project!

This video contains Six Road Bikes as featured in the early 70's Schwinn Catalogs, under the Lightweight Category. The bikes were listed in order of components offered and Catalog Sticker Price. The video is lengthy but it offers detailed information about the iconic American Brand, I hope you find it interesting and enjoy the bikes as much as I enjoyed finding and restoring these American Beauties.

http://www.youtube.com/bikemanforu A 1980s Schwinn World Tourist with Shimano's vintage Front freewheel system is dubbed "a good little bike." Free Shipping http://www.bikemanforu.com on bike parts, tires, tools, and cycle accessories. YouTube's how-to guru of bicycle repair shows us a crank design that the late great Sheldon Brown once called a "solution in search of a problem." As he shows us how the Front Freewheel system works, BikemanforU explains the freewheel in the front with the sprockets "lets you shift while coasting." He seems underwhelmed when he adds, "It lasted for about a season and a half. It's extremely heavy. The freewheel mechanism in here, the chain is constantly rubbing. It was Shimano's one hit wonder. They just love to pull that kind of stuff. But it is friction style shifters on this thing, with this mechanism of front freewheel system, called an FF system, is what it was. This schwinn, kind of standard Schwinn, is a good little bike, man." BikemanforU was a teen-ager, fixing bikes with his dad, Mr. Pump, at the family's Bike 'n' Kite shop in Westhampton Beach on Long Island, when the lugged steel 10-speed World Tourist hit the market in the early 1980s. "This was right around when schwinn went overseas with their manufacturing," he recalls. We get a good look at what's going on with the 27" wheels. "The chroming on this is not that great," he says, pointing to the rear. "This thing was a mess. It was all rusted. came out of the barn from somewhere. You can see the pitting and how it's starting to flake off. It's starting to rust underneath and bubble up the chrome. The front one's worse. You know why the rear one's always in better shape than the front in terms of chrome? Because of the gear chain and lubrication that splatters down...The front doesn't get that kind of action. The front one is really starting to corrode. Even with chrome polish, it's not going to come out." Overall, though, he notes, "(The bike) cleaned up pretty nice. We put a new set of BikemanforU 27 x 1 1/4 gumwall tires on this, and she's good to go." This model has it's original Schwinn-approved spring cushion trefoil saddle, and upright handlebar. "Good little bike," he says. "Basically in here for a kind of mini-tune, two tires and two tubes. (This is our ) bread and butter. It's keeping us in business. You know what I'm saying: Take the old bike and make it into a new bike." I show how to update a vintage 10 speed bike (Raleigh Grand Prix) to 14 speeds with Shimano SIS indexed shifting. I spread the chain stays to accommodate a wider wheel. The 5 speed hub rear wheel is replaced with another 27" wheel with a 6/7 speed hub and 7 spd freewheel. I also replace the rear derailleur, chain. And the Huret friction shifters were replaced with Shimano indexed shifters. If I wanted to put the money into it, I could have easily spread the chain stays to 130mm, and upgraded the bike with an 8/9/10 speed hub wheel. But that would have meant going to 700c wheels. And the whole thing would have cost more. **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing. -Website: http://www.RJTheBikeGuy.com -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RJTheBikeGuy -Subscribe Here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=shyflirt1 -YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/RJTheBikeGuy
