Sea Urchin Facts: 18 Facts about Sea Urchins

04:16
Here are 18 facts about Sea Urchins to help gain a better understanding of these incredible creatures. They are a fascinating species far different from any other species we know, and here we delve into the wonder of these wonderful creatures. Synopsis There are around 200 species of sea urchins that are found across oceans around the world Sea urchins are found in warmer waters on ocean floors close to coral reefs They are a threatened species due to overfishing and pollution They range in size from between 1.2 to 3.9 inches in diameter. They have globe like shape which is covered in long spines and their bodies have a radial symmetry. They are protected by a shell formed of bony plates providing protection for the softer inner organs. They vary in colour depending in the species of the sea urchin. However the majority are black, brown, purple, red or green in color. They have five rows of paired feet on the underside of their body. These feet have suckers in them which means they can grip the ocean floor. Amongst the spines on their bodies are claw like structures which are known as pedicellariae that are used for protection against predators and also to collect food. There are species of sea urchin that also have spikes that are filled with venom They have a unique type of mouth called "Aristotle's lantern". The mouth has five sharp teeth which they use to drill holes in rocks They are omnivores by nature consuming both animals and plant life such as algae sea weed plankton and Other orgainc mattet The main predators of sea urchins are humans sunflower stars crabs fish birds and Sea urchins mate in the spring time and reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm cells in to the water in a process called external fertilization. the Fertilized egg will then go through a larval stage before it becomes a grown adult. Whilst the sea urchin is in its larval stage It will swim with other types of tiny creatures as part of zooplankton Sea urchins live up to 30 years. In fact the red sea urchin lives up to 200 years making it the longest living creature Sea urchins are not aggressive creatures however if they are touched most sea urchins will try to defend themselves using their spines and some species have spines that can pierce a divers suit. Some species like thr purple sea urchin, have an another defense mechanism called thepedicellarines which are tiny, jaw-like structures which clasp onto a diver's skin and inject a powerful poison. They are nestled down between re spines and are difficult to come into contact with unless the diver impales them self on it

Chariot of Fire - Fire Urchins with Coleman Shrimps, Zebra Crabs & Urchin Crabs

03:51
The fire urchin, Asthenosoma varium, is a dangerous sea urchin. It is characterized by a fiery coloration and by globular swellings beneath the tips of it's thousands of venomous spines. It can infict a very painful sting. Various crustaceans form commensal relationships with the fire urchin to protect themselves from predators. Coleman shrimps, Periclimenes colemani, usual live in pairs on top of the fire urchin. The female is larger than the male. Zebra crabs, Zebrida adamsii, and urchin shrimps, Allopontonia brockii, are often found near the bottom of fire urchin. They feed on organic matter on the substrate as the sea urchin moves. This type of symbiotic relationship benefits the shrimps and crabs but not the host urchin. Allopontonia iaini is a synonym of Allopontonia brockii. I shot this footage at Anilao in the Philippines while diving with anilao PHOTO hotel (https://www.facebook.com/anilaophotohotel) and with Crystal Blue Resort (http://www.divecbr.com) on their annual Critterfest workshop. Thanks to dive guides and critter spotters Ivan, Obet and Jomel. Crab uses sea urchin as spiny shield

This might look like an underwater hostage situation but it’s actually a perfect example of symbiosis. The carrier crab uses the sea urchin as a spiny shield, protecting it from any predators looking for a crabby treat. In return, the sea urchin gets a free ride to new feeding grounds. Hungry sea otter eats prickly sea urchin

01:48
Wally, a rescued and rehabilitated sea otter, enjoys a meal of red sea urchin and Dungeness crab. Sea otters, unlike other marine mammals, lack an insulating layer of blubber. Instead, they rely on their fur and high metabolism to keep warm. They eat over a quarter of their body weight every day. Wally was rescued off the west coast of Vancouver Island (near Tofino) in October. He was severely injured after being shot. He was transported to the Vancouver Aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Centre where part of his hind flipper was removed during surgery. Rescue staff also discovered that he was blind as a result of the attack. Despite his recent history, his hearty appetite is a good indication that he's on the road to recovery. Sea Otter feasts on abalone, kelp crabs & sea urchins

01:44
I have been watching a new female otter along the Coast Guard jetty in Monterey, CA. She is not tagged and her nose is not scarred, but she can be identified by a large patch of red algae that is growing on the back of her head. A few days ago I saw her eat an abalone, a kelp crab and some urchins – and then she repeated the food choices in the exact same order. You can see the red patch on her head at the end of the video.

Essential Destinations - Fanjove - Crab carries a Sea urchin

01:03
Fanjove, February 2017: wildlife lovers might be interested in spotting bottlenose dolphins, dive behind the reef around infinite numbers of fish and see what other signs of wildlife can be found in the area. While snorkeling in the shallow waters in front of the dining we have spotted this sea urchin being carried by a crab. There are studied cases of symbiotic relationship between the 2 species: the crab curries on its carapax the urchin for defense and the urchin gets free passages, left over from the crab meals and defense from fish predatory since it would be too heavy for the fish to take it.

Mucky Secrets - Part 3 - Squat Lobsters, Hermit Crabs, True Crabs & Sea Urchins - Lembeh Strait

05:11
Squat lobsters, hermit crabs, true crabs and sea urchins. Part 3 of my documentary, "Mucky Secrets", about the fascinating marine creatures of the Lembeh Strait in Indonesia. Watch the full 90-minute documentary at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJMZ6reOB0E In this video we first look at more marine crustaceans. First we meet squat lobsters. The elegant squat lobster, Allogalathea elegans, lives commensally on the arms of crinoid feather stars. It feeds on plankton collected by its host, and its colour often matches the crinoid for camouflage. Next we encounter squat lobsters of the Galathea genus fighting for territory on branching sponges at TK 2. Hermit crabs don't have a hard carapace like other crabs, so they recycle an empty gastropod shell to protect their soft abdomen. They carry their adopted home around with them, and long eye stalks ensure that the crab has a wide angle of view. We encounter whitespotted hermit crabs, Dardanus megistos, living in empty cone shells and conch shells. We also meet an anemone hermit crab, Dardanus pedunculatus, carrying sea anemones on its back in a classic example of mutual symbiosis. We then meet a pair of wingless box crabs, Cycloes marisrubri. The male box crab carries the female everywhere with him until she has moulted her shell and is ready to mate. Camouflage is important for Lembeh's true crabs. We encounter a rear-spined elbow crab, Aulacolambrus hoplonotus, and a decorator spider crab, Achaeus sp., perfectly camouflaged in their environment. A zebra crab, Zebrida adamsii, clings to the spines on the underside of a highly venomous flower urchin, Toxopneustes pileolus, using the last segment of its legs which has evolved into a hook. Blue-spotted urchins, Astropyga radiata, are also highly venomous and gather in groups at dive sites such as Hairball. Juvenile emperor red snappers, Lutjanus sebae, often shelter amongst these sea urchins in a commensal relationship. There are English captions showing either the full narration or the common and scientific names of the marine life, along with the dive site names. The full Mucky Secrets nature documentary features a huge diversity of weird and wonderful marine animals including frogfish, nudibranchs, scorpionfish, crabs, shrimps, moray eels, seahorses, octopus, cuttlefish etc.. Thanks to Tom Cusack of Leafy Lane Productions (http://www.freemusicforvideos.com) for the music track, "Mystery 2" and to Kevin MacLeod of http://www.incompetech.com for the music track, "Covert Affair".
