Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

In students of product design episode 5 I look at prototypes and model making. One of the reasons industrial design projects are not successful is because the designer didn't make enough prototypes to test ideas, prove concepts and highlight problems. Industrial designers have to make prototypes. You can never assume that just because something has been done before, you can progress straight to manufacture without prototyping your design. In this video I demonstrate this by designing a pair of pliers. A simple change to the handle means in use it pinches the palm of your hand. A quick prototype highlights this and saves time, money and embarrassment. So you have to do this phase in the design process to identify problems. But this isn't the only reason to prototype. Prototyping and model making is used to develop new mechanisms, test people's opinions, get important feed back in focus groups and trial different user interactions to work out how acceptable or feasible a new method of doing something would be. So for me, a good prototype is not the one that looks the most beautiful or is the most well made, it's the one that answers questions and moves you forward. Sometimes these are the ones that are a complete disaster as much as the ones that work. It can take more thought and effort to work out how to design the prototype to prove your idea, than the actual design itself. James Dyson said he had to make 5127 prototypes to get his first bag-less vacuum cleaner right, which is why today rapid prototyping is so useful, because of how accurately you can create prototypes from the data that will eventually go for manufacture. But rapid prototyping is not always cost effective or practical to use, most companies only have access to machines with relatively small bed sizes, so it's currently not the right method to use when developing anything large. There is still an important need for more traditional techniques. So don't underestimate how many questions you can answer quickly with card, sellotape, pieces of rubbish and Lego. Students of product design complain that they can't afford materials, but I learnt that everything we surround ourselves with can be repurposed as long as you always use appropriate safety gear and act responsibly. If you are in college or university, take advantage of everything available to you, because you will rarely have access to so much fantastic equipment under one roof again and progress to prototyping as soon as you can, because it will move your designs on faster. I hope you enjoy 'Students of Product Design Episode 5'. More of my work is here: www.producttank.co.uk

Sustainable product development (SPD) is a method for product development that incorporates a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD), also known as The Natural Step (TNS) framework. As the demand for products continues to increase around the world and environmental factors like climate change increasingly affect policies - and thus business - it becomes more and more of a competitive advantage for businesses to consider sustainability aspects early on in the product development process. SPD is not limited to the actual product development, but also the product design. Green design which is a part of SPD has two main goals: the prevention of waste and to minimize environmental impact. Environmental impact involves: deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource/material management, etc. The early stages of design tend to be the areas that effect the environment the worst, the extraction and refining.

The 21st century is the first in which the finite nature of our planet was clear from the first day - unlike previous centuries when the World was felt or treated as if it were infinite. Our advances in wealth creation, safety and comfort have lead many of us to lose connection with the nature of our planet and how we must learn to live symbiotically and healthily with it. https://media.ccc.de/v/bub2018-183-sustainable_product_and_business_model_innovation Robert Gerlach: The tools to make it happen This talk is about processes and design tools, such as the Sustainability Impact Canvas, that enable companies with an ICT focus to build more sustainable and innovative products and business models. The talk shows how the adaptation of comparably simple methods can make a significant difference in the corporate design process and help designers consider sustainability aspects when they are most important to consider: at the very start of the innovation process. The opportunities for the digital revolution to generate positive sustainability effects have long been recognised. For example, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have been estimated to be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020 by 20%. At the same time, it can be shown that digital companies who take sustainability seriously are not only more profitable, but also more innovative than those who do not. Nevertheless, many corporate product designers and strategists still treat sustainability as a cost creator, rather than a business opportunity. Why is that? Apart from the frequently discussed lack of effective government policies and regulations, there are two main company internal challenges that prevent companies from taking sustainability seriously. The first challenge is to effectively embed sustainability into core business strategy across the complete value chain and company hierarchy, and the incentivisation of the according behaviour via effective KPIs. The second challenge is the lack of effective processes and tools to implement sustainable business practices into daily operations and from the start of the innovation process. Both company internal challenges are interdependent and need to be addressed simultaneously. This talk is about the steps a company needs to undertake to address both challenges. It introduces and explains simple tools, such as the Sustainability Impact Canvas or the Sustainable Business Model Canvas, which can be implemented and applied to incentivise product designers and strategist to take sustainability related aspects into account from the very beginning of the product and business model innovation process. A game-oriented process to facilitate the adaptation of more sustainable business models, for example the “product as a service model” will be presented, and real-world examples of companies using these design processes are given.
