We are going to be looking into the catch part of front crawl and showing how you can improve this important part of the stroke. The stroke starts with the catch where your hand enters the water, the pull is the main underwater phase, the exit is as sounds, when your hand and arm come out of the water then the recovery is your arm coming over the surface of the water and back past your head. Without a good catch the rest of the stroke is going to struggle, getting hold of the water at the front of the stroke is vital for a strong pull. But what exactly is this part of the swim stroke we are talking about. The catch is when your hand enters the water at the front of the stroke; when your movement changes from moving forwards to pulling back and down under your body. The moment when your hand and forearm start to make this new movement is the catch, in theory you are “catching” this new body of water. The Pull - How To Swim Front Crawl | Freestyle Swimming Technique

The pull phase of the front crawl stroke is the propulsive phase - when the hand and arm are pulling against the water. Get this part of the stroke right, and you can considerably transform your technique; making it both easier and quicker. This maintains our body position in the water and begins to load the arms ready for the pull phase. With a perfect catch, you should see the elbow above the hand as the hands presses down and through the water. As the hand starts to come underneath your head, then this is the start of the PULL PHASE. There are different teachings on this pull phase, but the one that I recommend for symmetry, balance and efficiency - is a direct pull straight underneath the body. This prevents any movement or snaking from side-to-side. To do this effectively, you should have a slight bend in the elbow. Somewhere between 90-120 degrees. As demonstrated earlier, this really allows maximum force production. If you’re in a pool with a line on the bottom, as I am now...and you are fortunate enough to have a lane to yourself, or you’re in a squad session...then you can use this line to help teach this movement. Imagine the line is a ladder, and you have to pull yourself up this ladder. Each hand entry and pull should track over this line. Knowing how to swim smooth freestyle is essential for lap swimmers, triathletes, open water swimmers, waterpolo players, crossfit athletes and basically anyone wanting to swim as a workout. The first thing to note is the position of the body. The more horizontal your body is, the easier it will be to swim though the water without a lot of resistance. The main issue people have is that their legs sink. To compensate they start kicking faster, then they get tired and their legs sink. The next thing to master is to reduce excess drag. Advanced swimmers actually use very little energy to go forward while swimming smooth freestyle. This is because they have reduced the drag of their bodies as much as possible. One big part of it is the legs. Try to avoid bending your knees too much. For smooth freestyle doing a few narrow kicks, maybe one or two per stroke, should be enough to keep your legs a float. Finally point your ankles in plantar flexion, this will reduce your drag a substantial amount and will help you swim smoothly. If you want to take your smooth freestyle to the next level, work on your core. It will give you stabilization for a better horizontal position. Work also one your flexibility. This will give you a better range of motion and reduce drag. When you're doing the freestyle, the breathing is done to the side; very important that when you breathe to your side, you really just bring half your face outside the water, just enough for your mouth to come out and take a breath. As you take a quick breath to your side, the arm recovers and it fits right in front of your head, and you begin the stroke with the other arm. In freestyle, the breathing could be done at any time. You can really just swim at whatever level you're swimming at. So, what I'm trying to say about that is, in freestyle, breathing to your side could be done every stroke, every other three strokes, every other five strokes or seven strokes, depending on what kind of workout you are doing. So, I'm going to demonstrate to you, breathing to your side every stroke. So, this is going to be me breathing to my right side. Pull, take a breath, face goes right back in, pull with your left arm, your face stays in the water. Pull, take a breath, face goes right back in, pull with your left arm again. This is how we breathe when we are doing the front crawl.

Basic front crawl swimming technique can be broken down into five parts. http://www.swim-teach.com/front-crawl.html The five parts are: Body position Leg kick Arm action Breathing Timing and coordination Video Transcript: " The body must be kept horizontal, stretched and streamlined, with the face in the water and the eyes looking downward and slightly forward. The head leads the movement, only turning when a breath is taken. The shoulders and upper body rotate to maximize the reach and power of the arm action. Using a continuous movement that originates at the hips, the swimmer shows a steady alternating and rhythmical leg kick within the body width. The toes are pointed and the ankles relaxed and the knees bend slightly to take full advantage of the accelerating down beat. The feet make a small splash as they kick and remain near the water surface. The strength, power and depth of the leg kick will depend largely on the distance and pace of the swim. The arm action should be rhythmical, balanced and controlled. The finger tips lead the hand entry, entering the water at a point in front of the head between the shoulder and center line. The hand continues to lead the arm and shoulder into the swimmers full reach before starting the propulsive phase. The hand presses outwards and downwards to the catch position, causing the shoulder to rotate inwards and the elbow flexes to help provide power. The hand accelerates through an S shape pathway to the hip where the hand releases and the arm can be lifted, elbow first for the recovery. The arm is taken back over the water in a pathway close to the body, with the hand close to the head as it remains near to the water surface. When one arm enters the water, the other arm should be at its propulsive phase to ensure maximum continuous propulsion. The overall arm action should ensure the swimmer gains maximum distance per stroke Breathing should occur to both sides in a relaxed and sustained rhythm, while maintaining a horizontal and streamlined body position. The swimmer exhales fully as the head turns when the hand pulls through and past the hip. Inhalation then takes place quickly as the arm begins its recovery phase so that the face can be rolled back into the water as the hand reenters. The kicking, arm action and breathing must be coordinated and controlled. Each part of the stroke should compliment each other smoothly whilst maintaining a balanced and streamlined body position. All actions must be smooth and continuous. Learn how to do the front crawl / freestyle stroke with this online swimming lesson. How to do the freestyle. There are a couple of elements that go into having a nice freestyle stroke, also known as the front crawl. First you start off in a ready position from the wall to push off into a streamline position, which helps you glide and then kick into the stroke. After you do your streamline, you break into your freestyle stroke by doing a pull first. The pull is you catch the water with your arm, your palm, and your fingers pointing down and you push the arm all the way through your hips. Then you have the recovery, the arm comes out of the water and enters. In freestyle the breathing is done to the side. When you breath to the side, just half of your face usually comes out of the water, you take a quick breath, and then as your arm recovers your face goes right back into the water. As you're swimming it's important that you are exhaling in the water so you can clear your lungs to get more breath. You can breathe every stroke, which means to one side, or you can breathe to both sides, which is called bilateral breathing. So here's an example. You're gonna take three pulls, one, two, three, breathe to one side. One, two, three, breathe to the other side. Also when we're doing the freestyle we use the flutter kick. The flutter kick is done from the hips with a slight bend in the knee and the ankle should be nice and relaxed to help you propel through the water. That's how we do the front crawl.

Front crawl swimming can look smooth, fast and effortless. We are continuing to break down the stroke to perfect each stage in order to help you develop your front crawl. In this video we’re going to be looking at rotation. Subscribe to GTN: http://gtn.io/SubscribetoGTN Check out the GTN Shop: http://gtn.io/cd The front crawl stroke can be broken into four phases, the catch, the pull, the exit and the recovery. Rotation happens throughout all four and is essential to making the stroke smooth and efficient. You should actually only spend a moment totally horizontal throughout each stroke, when your right hand is underwater and “pulling” you need to rotate up on the left and vice versa. You don’t want to rely purely on your arm strength to pull you through the water, you need to add in full body rotation. Super flexible shoulders might well allow you to have the full range required for swimming but you’ll be losing out on a lot of potential power as well as being more vulnerable to injury. The rotation in front crawl should be purely around the longitudinal axis, imagine there is a line going from the top of your head down to your feet and your hips, shoulders and torso all rotate around this, no side to side bending movement should be seen. This will allow you to engage the larger muscles in your back and torso therefore generating far more power on each stroke. Mark and Heather are at the BEST Swim Centre in Mallorca and bring your their top tips for beginning your open water journey. Here are their 9 top tips for open water swimming: - Equipment: Buy a wetsuit that fits well to prevent fighting it or carrying lots of water in it. Make sure you can be seen with a bright coloured hat and ensure you have a good set of googles to be able to see the course and any dangers ahead. - Safety: This is paramount in open water swimming. Swim at a proper venue with water testing and make sure to swim with someone else or have a spotter on the side. Also, familiarise yourself with the course entry and exit point before jumping in. - Warm up: It can be difficult to warm up when the water is cold so limbering up before can make a big difference. A few press ups and arm swings will suffice. - Climatization: Sit on the edge with your feet in the water and splash some on your face to get your body used to the cold water. - Lie on your back: Enter the water slowly to allow your body to get used to the temperature change. A good way to relax is lie on your back and take several deep breaths to control your breathing. - Rescue: Should you find yourself in difficulty in deep water then roll on to your back and wave to catch someone attention. - Confidence: Build confidence by taking it one step at a time. Step one is to fully submerge whilst blowing bubbles do ensure you can control your breathing. - Start slowly: Don't rush in to a long swim, especially if you are new to the open water. So, we’re not necessarily looking for a crazy fast kick, but we are looking to get an effective kick for minimum effort. And most importantly, we don’t want our kick to be slowing us down! The kick should come from the hips with a soft flex through the knee. Make sure you’re not just kicking from the knees and keeping your thighs still. The kick should also follow right through to your toes, meaning a good flexion from the ankles to finish the kick. How to swim fast freestyle. Sprint front crawl

There are basically two ways to swim fast freestyle. By fast freestyle we refer to a distance of 25 or 50 meters or yards. There is the straight arm and the classic arm. The straight arm fast freestyle has become popular among sprinters. In both techniques there is little need to rotate the shoulders as the arms move so fast that rotating a lot would be a waste of time. To do a fast freestyle it is essential that you kick as fast as you can. There should be water splashing behind you as if you had a motor. In a 50 freestyle there is very little margin of error, that is why you need an explosive start and flip turn. Finally, very often you can win or lose by a tenth of a second so a good final touch can make you win the race. The final stroke is a little longer than the rest. You stretch your body as fast and far as you can, rotating more to your side. You should touch with your fingers not with the palm of your hands. Just strong enough to activate the touch pad but not strong enough that you injure your fingers. This takes practice to master, so start slow and build up speed to touch the wall properly. Learn how to do the crawl kick stroke in this swimming lesson from Howcast. How to crawl kick, also known as the flutter kick? The flutter kick is done from your hips with a slight bend in your knees and your toes pointed. A good way to practice the crawl kick is to begin practicing on your belly with your arms at the 11:00 position. You want your body to be right on top of the water, and you don't have to worry about the breathing for now. You can just push off the wall and do about a 12 repetition kick from the wall with your arms stretched out, your head nice and straight. This will really give you nice focus on the kick. When you do the crawl kick, if you learn that you don't kick too much where your feet are especially out of the water, too high when your feet are splashing out of the water, too low when you're barely getting in sort of traction or propulsion kick. It's very important to kick right on the surface of the water. Your heel should just be coming out with a light splash. The kick should be relaxed and done from the hips with a slight bend in the knee with an ankle that's relaxed and the toes are pointed. That's how we do the front crawl kick.

Swimming freestyle rotation drills. How to swim front crawl smoother

We have talked about the importance of rotation of the body in freestyle. I promised to post a video about drills to help you rotate properly. Here it is! We will go over three exercises. The first one is very similar to freestyle but without using your arms. Since you don’t have to worry about your arms you can focus on the rotation better. Try this exercise by kicking strongly. You will find that without the arms it is more difficult to stay a float. If you find it to distracting to stay on the surface and you want to just focus on the rotation try using fins. To do this exercise correctly you need to keep your head still. Moving it only to breathe. You will notice that the most challenging part is to keep kicking normally since your legs will also be rotating with your whole body. This is the part that you actually need to master with this drill. Once you get a hold of kicking while rotating you can move on to the next exercise. It is basically the same exercise but this time you add the motion of one arm. With this exercise you will practice breathing to one side and using the opposite arm. and you will also practice using your other arm and breathing to the other side. Yes! you know that one side that you don’t usually use? you will practice it like this. It is good to breathe to both sides because the rotation will be more symmetrical. Finally, the third exercise is freestyle with a pause. This exercise will make it obvious how much you are rotating. If you don’t rotate enough you will slow down fast. If you do rotate you will glide through the water better. Remember to keep your head still looking at a 45 degree angle, Moving your head quickly just to take a breath. I recommend doing these drills some time during warm up or right after warm up so you can swim better in the main set. When you swim at full speed try to remember the feeling of these rotation exercises and apply it to your normal swim. Thank you for all the nice comments on our past videos. So we've got the help of uber swimmer Lucy Charles and here are her top 5 tips to swimming faster. Subscribe to GTN: http://gtn.io/SubscribetoGTN Check out the GTN Shop: http://gtn.io/6v Lucy: So my first tip that I'm going to talk about is the catch, which is, basically, the front end of your stroke. And a lot of people, when you say catch, they're like what do you mean by catch. Basically, it is the front end of your stroke. You want to anchor it, you want to catch the water and you want to feel the water. And the main thing is really to be more efficient, so the more water your can catch, the easier you're going to get through the water and the faster you're going to move through it. My next tip is structured swim sessions. I think if you get in and you haven't got a plan and you're just floating up and down aimlessly, one, it's going to be really boring and you're also not going to get a lot from it. So if you've got a plan when you get in, you're going to get tonnes more from the session, and it's actually going to be way more enjoyable. Up next, I want to talk about arm rate, which is, basically, your cadence with your stroke. And for Triathlon in open water, a high cadence stroke rate often works a lot better, and I'm very lucky in that, even when I was a poor swimmer, I had quite a high cadence stroke rate. Well, if you compare me to my other half, Reese, he had quite a long, slow stroke rate, and he was always much faster than me in the pool, but when we went over to open water, he often struggled. So he's actually had to adapt his stroke rate now to a high cadence, especially for open water. Particularly, if it's really choppy in the water, it actually helps a lot more to have high cadence because you don't have to fight with the waves. Then it's bilateral breathing, which basically means being able to breath to both sides. And when I was a swimmer, I actually only breathed to the right hand side because I was a lot faster like that. And when I moved into triathlon, I actually found I had a lot of issues and some injuries from bike and run because I was so imbalanced from only rotating to that direction. So, in that respect, I would definitely say you should bilaterally breathe, but also in open water, you need to see what is going on on both sides of you. So yeah, I'd definitely say get in the pool and breathe to both sides. My final tip is speed work, and you may think this sounds pretty crazy because the distance I'm doing is an Iron Man, and it's very much endurance, but I definitely wouldn't neglect the speed work, you want to make sure you've got that initial speed to break out at the start, and then if somebody's going to surge in the swim, you want to make sure you've got that speed to be able to react. Freestyle kick technique. Swimming front crawl. Improve your position

The kick during freestyle should be something natural that you do without thinking about it. To improve your freestyle kick to the point where you no longer have to think about it you need to perfect it by doing drills everyday. The best way is to separate the kick and the stroke. To do that you will need a kickboard. If you don’t have a kickboard you can do flutter kick on your back. The first thing you need to focus and this is something you have probably heard me say before is the ankle flexibility. Here I show you the difference between kicking on dorsiflexion and plantar flexion. As you can see here I don’t go forward at all when my ankles are flexed like this. As soon as I change them I start moving forward. This means that the ankles can act as a parachute or as fins, depending on your flexibility. One problem with the kick board is that it puts your head out of line, and therefore the legs can sink a little. This is not a natural position of your head when you swim. So try kicking with the kickboard like this. You can put up your head to breathe like in breaststroke or butterfly. You will be doing your neck and your freestyle position a favor. You can also simply kick on your back with a streamline. This is how I usually kick because I don’t like the kickboard that much. Finally, you will notice that the kick is not wide. The wider the kick the more effort you will need to move forward. So focus on doing small kicks, trying to bend your knees very little.
