The Stylistics - We Can Make It Happen Again (1974)

04:01
Please Visit My FaceBook Wall https://www.facebook.com/pages/Monste... Another requested song... please enjoy!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After the Spinners and the O'Jays, the Stylistics were the leading Philly soul group produced by Thom Bell. During the early '70s, the band had 12 straight Top Ten hits, including "You Are Everything," "Betcha by Golly, Wow," "I'm Stone in Love With You," "Break Up to Make Up," and "You Make Me Feel Brand New." Of all their peers, the Stylistics were one of the smoothest and sweetest soul groups of their era. All of their hits were ballads, graced by the soaring falsetto of Russell Thompkins, Jr. and the lush yet graceful productions of Bell, which helped make the Stylistics one of the most successful soul groups of the first half of the '70s. The Stylistics formed in 1968, when members of the Philadelphia soul groups the Monarchs and the Percussions joined forces after their respective band dissolved. Thompkins, James Smith, and Airrion Love hailed from the Monarchs; James Dunn and Herbie Murrell were from the Percussions. In 1970, the group recorded "You're a Big Girl Now," a song their road manager Marty Bryant co-wrote with Robert Douglas, a member of their backing band Slim and the Boys, and the single became a regional hit for Sebring Records. The larger Avco Records soon signed the Stylistics, and single eventually climbed to number seven in early 1971. Once they were on Avco, the Stylistics began working with producer/songwriter Thom Bell, who had previously worked with the Delfonics. The Stylistics became Bell's pet project and with lyricist Linda Creed, he crafted a series of hit singles that relied as much on the intricately arranged and lush production as they did on Thompkins' falsetto. Every single that Bell produced for the Stylistics was a Top Ten R&B hit, and several -- "You Are Everything," "Betcha by Golly, Wow," "I'm Stone in Love With You," "Break Up to Make Up," and "You Make Me Feel Brand New" -- were also Top Ten pop hits. Following "You Make Me Feel Brand New" in the spring of 1974, the Stylistics broke away from Bell and began working with Van McCoy, who helped move the group towards a softer, easy listening style. In 1976, they left Avco and signed with H&L. The group's American record sales declined, yet they remained popular in Europe, particularly in Great Britain, where "Sing Baby Sing" (1975), "Na Na Is the Saddest Word" (1975), "Can't Give You Anything" (1975), and "Can't Help Falling in Love" (1976) were all Top Five hits. The Stylistics continued to tour and record throughout the latter half of the '70s, as their popularity steadily declined. In 1980, Dunn left the group because of poor health, and he was followed later that year by Smith. The remaining Stylistics continued performing as a trio on oldies shows into the '90s.

This absolute killer follow up features the same line up plus very special guests such as Jan Kincaid (Brand New Heavies) Snowboy and guitarist Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds) The band have fused all their favourite influences together throughout this album, from film soundtracks, latin jazz to psychedelic soul to great effect. The highlights include the opening track 'Tie One On' which is a nod to the soul jazz sound of the Prestige label circa late 60's, pumping drums sit underneath a crisp, irresistible horn riff that guitarist Al Cherry rides with an inimitable solo rooted in the style of legends like Cornell Dupree and Phil Upchurch and it's pure dance floor magic. The title of 'The Crisis Generator' was given to the band by legendary ex Clash front man Joe Strummer who the band met at Battery Recording Studio's in London during the summer of 2001 whilst the band were mixing the first 'Play Deep Funk' album. The two Jims (Watson & Hunt) feature here on organ and sax showing why they are both in huge demand as session players, great music just falls out of these guys and we are all better off for it. 'The Taking Of Peckham 343' was named after band mainstay Dom Glovers local bus in south London and an incident where he had to confront a couple of knife carrying youths, it features Jan Kincaid laying down a killer breakbeat. If the intro isn't sampled the massive beat will be! 'Greasin' The Wheels' is stunning return for The Sound Stylistics proving to anyone in any doubt that in the funky soul and jazz arena there' really isn't another band to touch them. Reviews for This Release: "The Sound Stylistics debut CD is something of a cult set among Deep Funk fans. The follow-up should re-emphasize their position as one of the tightest Funk/ Jazz bands around comprising some of the UK's greatest session musicians. Totally instrumental, the album kicks into high gear with 'Tie One On', but the blistering 'The Crisis Generator' is as hot as mustard with blazing horns, infectious guitar riffs and wicked solos. 'The Taking Of Peckham 343' has a 70's TV cop show soundtrack feel, and the summer-ish upbeat feel of 'El Nino' harks back to the days of Light Of The World/ Mass Production/ Blackbyrds. Every track is a blast as the musicians seem to have a ball inspiring each other to greater heights. Sound Stylistics whilst being their own band take inspiration from the likes of early Kool And The Gang, Funk Inc and those great Hammond Prestige albums of the early 70's" - Soul Brother Records "Sounding like a library soundtrack with breaks, beats and moog synths - my favourite is the mellow 'Eye Of The Storm' cut'" - Fitzroy (Soul Survivor Magazine) "Infectious, instrumental funk that summarizes all that's good and you need to know about this fabulous and rich kind of music. A highly recommended disc" - Teach (www.jazzandsoul.eu) "Greasin The Wheels is PURE FUNK! This album rocks and listen to The Taking Of Peckham 343 if you want a real treat!" - Paul Miller (BBC 3 Counties Radio) "Plenty of grease here -- given that The Sound Stylistics are one of the most cooking combos around!" - Dusty Groove America "Good god! Here's an absolutely top class funk album from start to finish! Nothing short of perfect!" - Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz)

Temptations & Four Tops Medley Live Motown 25

05:04
The Temptations and Four Tops competed in a "Battle of the Bands" style Motown 25 soul event at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, California in 1983. The only original or "Classic Five" Temptations performing were Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams, as Eddie Kendricks (who left the group in 1971) and David Ruffin (who left the group in 1968, and was replaced by Dennis Edwards) had a falling out with the group. Paul Williams (who also left the group in 1971) had died in 1973, and Al Bryant (who left the group and was replaced by Ruffin in 1964) had died in 1975. Joining Williams and Franklin were then-Temptations Dennis Edwards, Richard Street, and Ron Tyson. All of the original members of the Four Tops performed: Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, and Lawrence Payton, with Levi Stubbs providing the lead vocals. The two groups performed "Reach Out I'll Be There","Baby I Need Your Loving", "Get Ready", "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)", "My Girl" "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" and "I Can't Get Next to You", among other numbers. The joint performance was a success, and the Temptations and Four Tops toured together for two years following the Motown Records special. Source: Wikipedia Update February 2, 2018: Former Temptations lead singer Dennis Edwards died in Chicago from meningitis on February 1, 2018 at age 74. RIP Dennis Edwards.
