Fashion your future: Think more like a fashion designer | Suzi Vaughan | TEDxQUT

12:26
We live in times of unprecedented, disruptive change and uncertainty and most people find it challenging to thrive in those circumstances. If ‘design thinking’ is the new black, then thinking like a fashion design may just be the next big thing! This talk takes the idea of design thinking and translates it into a series of very practical tips that you can employ yourself, every day to help you think more optimistically in times of uncertainty and ambiguity. Professor Suzi Vaughan has settled (for now) in Brisbane, Australia having studied, lived and worked in Europe and Asia. After graduating from St Martins School of Art in London with a Ba Hons in Fashion, she started her professional career as a fashion designer, later moving into fashion education. Since 2011 she has been part of the executive team of a large Australian university. With over thirty years’ experience of design practice and teaching, she has become an advocate for the power and potential of design thinking. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

How designers turn inspiration into fashion collections

05:11
How designers turn inspiration into fashion collections: In my previous videos, we talked about how to create a fashion collection. We will do more exercises now to better understand the steps of any collection. Apart from the text part of any documentation - the phase when you read a lot about the topic you are interested in- there is the visual documentation. In this case, I took another image from a book of mine and use it as a starting point for some sketches. How to actually get inspired by an image? Try to decompose the image into elements. See what are the definitory elements that compose the image. In this case, you could use elements like: the pattern with stripes, the color, the sleeves and the lower part of the costume, the structures you see in the area of eyes and those elements near the ears. Use them separately, combine them, use them as modules: big or small, rotate them and so on.I used the shapes near the ears and I placed them in the center of my costume. I imagined those shapes will have holes inside, so that you can see the skin or the layers of my costume. You can use the elements and place them in other parts of your costume. For example, some sleeves could become scarfs or you could undo them and sew them again in stripes to create a rhythm to your future garment. If you used a lot of volume for the upper part of your costume, try to simplify the rest, there is no need to over-work the whole costume. As about the drawing style, use details and a black marker to add the contrast here and there, where you feel the need. For the second drawing, turn the page upside down and get inspired. Even if the elements are the same, they position will inspire you to see even more in the photo, to discover inspiration there where you did not know it exist. See how used the "let's say glasses" from my source of inspiration and used them as earrings.Mix the elements and play with them in unusual combinations. When sketching, there is no need to think of the human body. You can draw it only when it helps, if not, the costume will be enough. Use simple lines and add color because this will help you visualize the outfit. Also, write down your ideas regarding the colors or textures to be used in the final work. And now sit back and see how I used another image to finish my small collection inspired by African art.As I previously mentioned, try to really sketch after the photos I used and send me your collection by email. My email is: [email protected] Waiting for your sketches and I will come back with a feed-back.Thank you and please don't forget to subscribe if you liked my video.

Fashion collection concept ideas

03:15
Fashion collection concept ideas: With the next 2 videos I will continue with the plant series. The inspiration can come from anywhere but some of you wrote me asking for a fashion collection inspired by plants, so, here we are:) You were asking me how long I spend after doing my research. In fact, these drawings I made were not something I worked and over-worked. I just see the inspirational image, i decompose it instantly into parts and start drawing. That's why you see a lot of lines at the beginning of my videos. I try to capture the essence of the plant or flower I see in the moment I see it.I don't make any other sketches before shooting my videos. I do my research previously and I gather all the images in a folder. Then I start observing each of them, thinking if one plant or another will inspire me more. The nicest one will be the winner and I will just start sketching after it. My first sketches, you will see, are very close the the real model or shape of the flower. Then, the dresses will be more and more abstract until one can not guess from one glimpse the source of inspiration. This happens when you want to refine something and go deep and deeper into the creative process. When drawing I don't think of a color. I just start flowing and sinking into the theme I choose. After that, I put color to see what happens. Sometimes I don't like the color combination but i will keep the design of the outfit and re-color it.I don't think if the outfit can be worn or not. I will see that later. There is plenty of time to transform your outfit into a wearable one. Now it is the time to play. Also, when sketching, do not think of a certain part of your costume. Do not think or try to create a blouse or a dress. Let your pencil dance on the surface of the paper and the shape will come. It is always better to do this than imposing yourself to think of how can you transform a plant into a pullover or a skirt. And, as I previously said, try to use the same images I did to create a small collection. Then send it to me and I will include your drawings in my future video and we will discuss together the feed-back. This will help you learn faster. Now sit back and enjoy my video, thinking in the meantime how to explore different things of the same images in order to create a new collection inspire by plants. Thank you for watching, and, as always, please subscribe to my channel for more. Also, leave me your comments below and please reply to my question regarding: What should be my inspiration for my next collection?

**I'm going to post a separate video talking in detail about the Fashion Design program at UNT!** Here's a little glimpse of what I do as a fashion design major at the University of North Texas! We do projects like these all through out the semester, each one has a different theme. This one was the "Patterns Project" where we had to experiment with stripes, floral, or polka dots. I chose to do a Dolce and Gabbana inspired floral jumpsuit. It didn't turn out quite like I wanted, but here's the process! IELTS Speaking Test 2016 | Clothes, fashion, fashion industry,

03:02
February IELTS speaking test questions & answers: http://ieltsspeakingquestions.blogspot.com/2016/02/clothing-you-received-as-a-gift-recently.html Questions about: job, work, computers, learning, future plans, clothes, gifts, fashion, designer clothes, young people, old people, trendy clothes, uniforms How to pass the IELTS Speaking Test | Part 3 Top tips on how to respond to Part 3 questions in the IELTS speaking test In section 3 of the IELTS speaking test, the IELTS examiner asks you some additional questions (follow up questions) related to the topic you speak about in Part 2 of the test (the Cue Card Topic). The time allowance for Part 3 in the IELTS test is 4 to 5 minutes. How many questions you are asked will depend on the length of the answers you give to each question – around 40 seconds per question is a good guide. The format of the questions in part 3 is as follows: Part 3 consists of two main questions (Q1 and Q2), and each main question has three sub questions. Time management is important in this section of the test because if you spend 4 minutes answering the first question and the three sub questions – you will not be asked the second main question (Q2) and sub questions. Why is this important? Because instead of responding to six questions in total – you will respond to only three. The IELTS examiner only allows for four minutes in total. Therefore, if you speak for four minutes in response to Q1 – you will have no more time available to try and answer any other questions. It’s possible that some of the other questions provide a better opportunity for you to talk. For some test takers, it might be easier to give shorter answers (40 seconds) and attempt to answer all six questions. Important: Part 3 questions are related to the topic you talk about in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking test. This means that if you receive a Part 2 Cue Card Topic about food, for example, then the Part3 questions will also be related to food, in general. Part 3 Question Examples: We have been discussing a popular type of food in your country, and now I’d like to ask some more questions about this subject in general. Question 1 Firstly, I would like to discuss what things make a specific kind or style of food become popular in a country. Can you suggest some things which make a certain type of food popular? • Which types of food are the most popular in your country? • Why do you think these particular types of food are the most popular? • Do you think that other types of food might be popular in the future? Question 2 Now, let’s continue and talk about national variations in styles of food. Why do you think different types of food become popular in different countries? • Do you think it is important to be able to correctly cook the national food of the country you are born in? • What are some of the ways in which people can learn about and learn to appreciate food from different countries? • Do you think it’s possible that there might only be one kind of global food sometime in the future? Good luck in your IELTS Speaking Test!

Fashion Senior Addresses the Concept of Fast Fashion in Final Thesis Collection

01:40
Fashion design student Margaret Burton (B.F.A. Fashion Design ’16) created a senior thesis collection that offers a thought-provoking response to “fast fashion,” the fashion industry phenomenon that involves expediting the production of clothes in order to move catwalk trends into stores quickly and cheaply. Using textiles sourced by deconstructing items of clothing that came from friends, family, and thrift stores, Burton created the distinctive silhouettes she was seeking in looks that are the antithesis of disposable fashion. Burton’s collection was selected to be shown in the 2016 Pratt Fashion Show on May 5. This short video explores the thinking and processes that went into creating her collection.

Recycled Fashion Workshop by Swedish designer Maja Gunn

08:11
The Recycled Fashion Project is a series of ongoing workshops and events that bring together Swedish and Egyptian artists and fashion designers. The aim is to promote education, build the capacity of future fashion designers in Egypt and offer new ideas and perspectives on the world of fashion, such as recycled fashion. The project started in November 2012 with a Swedish-funded recycled fashion design workshop by Maja Gunn - Making & Remaking Fashion & Gender -- which offered new perspectives and practical applications using unconventional materials and garments that one already has. Leftover paper was draped into garments highly connected to the participants' identity and memories. This project is funded by the Swedish Embassy in Cairo in collaboration with Darb1718
Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Fashion Designers? [Amazon, Stitch Fix, Myntra]

07:12
Every time I visit any Fashion events, this has been one of the topics that often come up. Can Artificial Intelligence AI replace fashion designers? Fashion designer thinks it can not but tech folks say it can be done. So I started researching into what has been done and found 3 great examples for you. I want to give you a glimpse of what Amazon, Stitch Fix, and Myntra have been doing and using AI to design clothes. *************** Amazon: AI fashion designer *************** The effort points to ways in which Amazon and other companies could try to improve the tracking of trends in other areas of retail—making recommendations based on products popping up in social-media posts, for instance. And it could help the company expand its clothing business * “There’s been a whole move from companies like Amazon trying to understand how fashion develops in the world,” says Kavita Bala, a professor at Cornell University who took part in a workshop on machine learning and fashion organized by Amazon last week. A number of forward-thinking retailers are already using social networks like Instagram and Pinterest to track the latest fashion trends and react quickly. An Amazon team at Lab126, a research center based in San Francisco, has developed an algorithm that learns about a particular style of fashion from images, and can then generate new items in similar styles from scratch—essentially, a simple AI fashion designer. This work uses a cutting-edge tool called a generative adversarial network, or GAN. It consists of two deep neural networks operating in tandem to learn efficiently from raw data. The GAN internalizes the properties of a particular style simply by looking at lots of examples, and it can then apply that style to an existing item of clothing. *************** Stitch Fix *************** The in-house brand of subscription fashion startup Stitch Fix, Hybrid Designs employs a data science team that works with the company’s order data to predict which clothes customers will want to wear. The team identifies viable gaps in the company’s inventory—clothes that people would buy but a designer hasn’t made yet, says Stitch Fix chief algorithm officer Eric Colson. It works like this: A collection of three algorithms generate a starting point. The first algorithm picks three “parents,” recommended pieces of clothing that could be either combined or used as a template for a new piece. The second suggests three different attributes that have been shown to complement the parents’ style—maybe a different neckline or sleeves. And the third throws in a little bit of randomness, a suggestion that isn’t typical for the previously suggested style but might be interesting. Together, these algorithms search through a space of 30 trillion potential combinations of, for example, blouse attributes, to ultimately give just nine suggestions. *************** Myntra - Moda Rapido *************** Algorithms that would get their machines to produce images of T-shirts based on the discovered favorable attributes. It turned out that one category of the machine-created designs outsold the comparable category in each of the other 12 private brands owned by Myntra. Some of the other machine-created designs sold poorly, but the company knew they were onto something really big. “The core of the Rapid idea was to do fast fashion in an intelligent way, given that we have both a tech and a fashion DNA,” said Kenghe. “In the initial phase of the project, there was less machine and more designer-input. Over a period of time, there’s been more machine and less supervision.” Here&Now & Moda Rapido: By September, Moda Rapido and Here&Now were together bringing in sales of Rs12-13 crore every month, making them among the top 15 brands at Myntra. The two contribute 12.5% of Myntra’s private brand's sales, said, Narayanan. Moda Rapido and Here&Now are Myntra’s most profitable brands, **************** Other Videos You Might Like: **************** 13 Areas Artificial Intelligence will affect Fashion Industry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9Lp51oiCTo What is Artificial Intelligence? How To Dress Like A Fashion Designer

02:08
Fashion Designers dress in very diverse styles, but there are a few things most designers have in common, and it has more to do with how they get dressed, rather than what they’re wearing. The three considerations for fashion designers when choosing what to wear are: 1. Functionality. Designers tend to be no-fuss kind of people. They’re busy, and clothing that helps them stay comfortable throughout the day and focus on work, usually wins out. The outfits they put together tend to be clean, and minimal. 2. Quality. Designers understand the importance of quality in clothing. Not only do high quality fabrics and construction look better, but they last much longer. 3. Cohesion. When putting together an outfit, designers understand they can’t just consider each piece separately, and put them all on and go. They have to consider all pieces together as a united whole. They consider the colors, textures, shapes, proportions, and details. Then they consider how the pieces complement, or contrast each other. BONUS consideration: Consistency. Take the 3 considerations above, functionality, quality, and cohesion, and find your ideal wardrobe, and then wear it every day. Be consistent in what you wear. When you find something that works, stick with it. This essentially will become your daily uniform. Most fashion designers have a daily uniform because they found a style that works for them, and they stuck with it. Your style can look like whatever you want it to be. You can dress like Alexander Wang, or Betsey Johnson. It doesn’t matter what you look like, as long as it works for you. What would be your daily uniform? Let me know below in the comments! __________________________________________ Hi, I'm Emily. I approach fashion topics from a designer's point of view. Fashion Brand Failure: #1 Mistake Failed Fashion Designers Make & How to Avoid It

16:27
53% of Fashion Businesses fail within the first 4 years, according to Entrepreneur Magazine. In this video I cover 2 Topics: 1. The trap or the reason majority of first-time fashion designers tell themselves when they want to be in the fashion business. 2. A simple exercise that you as a future fashion designer must you do minimize your risk so you don’t add to clothing line failure rate and increase your chances of success. There are a number of reasons why clothing brands fail but in my experience, the #1 reason I have seen, especially for a new fashion designer is that they do not realize what is involved in running a fashion business. They often confuse their passion for fashion with fashion business. When you want to start a clothing business, its important understand that the goal of the fashion business is to make money. This tutorial lists how to find that difference and what are the costs involved in starting a fashion business that will cut in to a fashion designer's profit margin and could make the difference between a successful & failed fashion designer. ****************** Other videos: ****************** How to start a clothing line under $67? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JKL3xIc0Oc 8 Ways to Fund Your Clothing Business https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udT54wcRW-c
