Top 3 Continuous Lighting Options for Product and Flat Lay Photography or Videos

08:06
In this video we go through our Top 3 Continuous Lighting Options for Product and Flat Lay Photography or Videos We discuss our three different options including Compact Fluorescent Bulb Double Softbox Lights, Aputure AL-528W LED Panels and the Spectrum Aurora Gold Luxe LED Ring Light. When taking product photos or flat lays, it's important to get the lighting right for an evenly lit shot. Different continuous lighting options provide different results. A quick breakdown of the three we recommended include: Compact Fluorescent Bulb Double Softbox Lights Pros - Relatively inexpensive solution - Large softbox for a soft throw of light and less harsh shadows - Ideal for small or large products / flat lays Cons - Not as energy efficient therefore bulbs don't last as long - Produce a little heat when left on for extended periods - Not dimmable - simple on/off switch Aputure AL-528W LED Panels / LED Panels in General Pros - Energy efficient and about 8-10x longer lasting that fluorescent bulbs - No heat production when left on for extended periods - Can be battery operated / portable - Dimmable to control the light intensity Cons - More expensive than fluorescent bulbs - Harsher light if not used with softboxes or a light a diffuser Spectrum Aurora Gold Luxe LED Ring Light Pros - All the advantages of LED panels with being more energy efficient, no heat production, can be battery operated and dimmed - Some LED Ring lights are colour temperature adjustable between 3200-5500k so you can fine tune the colour temperature to suit the shot - The round catch light provides a nice even light for most shots. - Being a ring shape, it allows you to shoot through the ring light without obstructing the light and create shadows. Cons - Since the ring light is direct light onto the subject (typically positioned front and centre), reflections and hot spots are more prominent on reflective items. Diffusers are available to avoid this Overall we find that LED Panels and the Spectrum Aurora LED Ring Light provides the ideal continuous lighting solution for most product photography and flat lay photography scenarios. Being able to control the intensity of the light, not producing heat when used for extended periods and the ability to be battery operated to use on-location or outdoors if required make LED lights versatile for most situations. Product Photography Home Studio Killer Tips

17:16
http://www.brooklynphotoworks.com/product-photography-home-studio-killer-tips In this video, I take you guys thru the entire process of a home studio product photography shoot. I share with you every detail of my setup, every photo I take and how I made it. I give you my camera settings and flash settings. I also show you my mistakes and how I corrected them. Product photography requires patience. This is not a quick process and there's a bit of set up involved. There's also the mentality. Taking your time to get your exposure just right is critical to getting the right shots. In this video, I demonstrate the amazing Cactus RF60 speedlites and V6 transceivers using a 4-speedlite setup. The flexibility and power you have with this kind of setup is amazing. Being able to control power to each of your speedlites from the top of the camera is so important, especially when you're working alone with a lot of lights. These Cactus flashes and transceiver - receivers, have built-in radio transmitters so they can all send and receive signal. You can set up to 4 groups of flashes in multiple channels, all of which you control a the touch of a button or turn of a dial. Another amazing thing about the Cactus V6's is that they come pre-loaded with Canon and Nikon profiles for many of their popular flashes. In this video, I'm using Nikon SB-800 flashes on Cactus V6's as receivers and able to control the power with the V6 on my camera. AMAZING. And control flash power to the Cactus RF60's as well. This video is chock full of killer tips and nuggets. I pop a lot of tips on the screen to help along with the learning process. This is a simple setup and is great fo all sorts of simple product photography, with the camera set on a tripod it does not matter how long the exposure is so long as the lights are lighting the product. It is important to kill any ambient light as this can effect the image, if the item is reflected be careful as the scene will be reflected in it. LED Continuous Lights vs Strobes for Photography - which is the best studio lighting solution?

08:58
Shooting with LED continuous lights vs Strobes for photography - which should you be using? LED Lighting for photography has come a very long way in the last few years and all indications are that constant light sources and LED’s will be the future of portrait lighting and all photographic and video lighting. The real questions right now are do you really understand the differences between continuous lighting and strobes or speedlights? Why would you use one instead of the other? If you are a new photographer which type of studio lighting should you start with? The simple reality is that you will not find one light that is best suited for every situation you will encounter as a photographer. As I have shown you - there are pros and cons to both lighting systems. I actually consider myself lucky that I learned portrait lighting with those cheap silver reflectors and 150 watt bulbs mounted on top of light stands. It made it easier to learn how to see light - because the light was alway on. And it forced me to learn how to really see and manipulate light because the light quality from those cheap silver reflectors is horrible. If you are new to lighting and plan to shoot people like I do or even products, I would whole heartedly encourage you to start with LED lights. The constant light sources will allow you to really see what you are doing and will definitely help you develop your lighting skills much faster. And for you portrait photographers - here is a huge bonus that you get with constant LED’s… studio photographers have a bad habit of working in slightly darker studios so that they can see the effects of their modeling lights. The problem with that is that the modeling lights really aren’t very bright so your subjects pupils expand to gather more light. The result is that you see less of the iris and less color in the eye. Using LED lights for your portrait lighting will generally cause the pupils to contract which allows you to see more of the iris and more color. Some of you are going to ask about the new LED flash combos and if they are worth the money. In my opinion - at the time of this video - they are gimmicks and definitely not worth your hard earned money. If you are a geartographer and the GAS is killing you - go for it - they're interesting, but for practical purposes, they are too small and way too expensive. You can actually save yourself money by owning separate flash and LED systems compared to purchasing the few combination lights that are currently hitting the market. Please remember the newest gear and the most expensive gear don’t make you photography better. Only you can do that. Purchase your gear based on your real needs. Simple Product Photography Tips: 5 Min Portrait

08:21
http://froknowsphoto.com/product-photography-5min/ Click Here for the full res images. The reason I use the word "simple" in the title of this post is because this is a very basic setup that just about anyone can do. Product photography does not have to be overwhelming. You don't always need fourteen different lights, reflectors and assistants to capture a product shot. Of course in some situations where it is called for, you may need a more intense setup. If your goal is to simply get a product shot captured and online to help you showcase a something than the tips in this video will come in handy. When I am shooting photos of products on my kitchen table I like to use the natural light from outside and sometimes some continuos lights inside. In this case my main light was the daylight with a little bit of fill come from a continuous light that was meant to light me for the video. My goal was to capture a product shot of the Canon lens that could be used for an article, a sales page or just for practice. You will notice that I try and fill the frame as much as possible when I am capturing the image. Being that I do not crop my goal is to get the composition I am looking for as soon as I shot the image. Keep in mind when you are trying to capture shots like this that your background will play a major part in telling the story of the image. Will you shoot from the top down, bottom up, off to the side or smack dab right on. As you see in the video I had control of what my final background would look like by simply changing my own level. Did I want more of my kitchen in the background, did I want more of a blackgorund or did I want something else? I was able to make small adjustments that made each image look unique and slightly different. Who knew that a simple zebra pillow could totally change the image? Last minute I decided to see what would happen if we added a zebra pillow in the background. The hope was that I would get some very nice bokeh giving us a totally different picture. That is exactly what happened. We went form a dark background to a flashy white one with zebra stripes that were out of focus. Not only did the pillow give us a different background but it bounced light back into our subject creating some nice separation light. Don't get me wrong, there are so many different things I could have done in the studio to make this a more professional photo shoot. But for a simple 5 minute portrait that anyone can do as long as they have some daylight I think it does a great job. Do you know how people are always asking if they should go to school or study online? This assuagement is something that you would find in your first year as a photo student. The teacher would tell you to use natural light to photograph a product. That is all school is, it's assignment after assignment after assignment until you finally leave school. Use this as a personal assignment for you to practice product photography, that is the best way to practice before a real job comes along. Feel free to download the full res images from the photo shoot. I used the Nikon D4 with the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII with VR on to capture the images. I used Adobe Lightroom 5 to tweak and edit all the files. If you have a suggestion you would like to see for a 5 min portrait feel free to leave a comment below. product photography guide

18:47
product photography guide How to shoot amazing product photography for your online store. This guide will briefly talk about the equipment, settings and post editing for preparing running shoes photos for an online store. You can use any camera to take great images for product photography (even smartphones) but you will have more flexibility in post and less errors if you take photos in raw and in manual mode. Be sure to use a tripod to get consistent looking shots for all your images as well as reducing camera shakes and overall better quality images. Tripods also serve the purpose of reducing the ISO settings to capture sharper images. You can shoot jpegs or raw. Raw images will give you the advantage of advanced edits with the help of Lightroom. Lighting is also very important. You don't want harsh direct light. I used a soft box tent that helps diffuse light. Soft light will give your products a more stunning appearance. Once you have a tripod and controlled lighting, shooting in manual will give you better results with consistency. The reason to use an aperture of at least F8 is so that the entire product is in focus. If you use values like F3.5, some of the areas can get out of focus. ISO is the sensitivity of the sensor. You can get brighter images with higher values but will be more grainy in low light conditions. The shutter speed will need to be relatively slow to allow more light in. This is not a problem with a tripod. If you take handheld, you will introduce camera shakes. Also check the White balance of your camera settings if your going to shoot in jpegs. Not all lights are the same and you may end up with slightly yellowish or blueish images. Best Lens for Small Product Photography

Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D Autofocus Zoom Nikkor Lens https://amzn.to/2NQWjKm http://photofonz.com I get asked often "What is the best lens for me to use"? Well in this video I reveal the lens that I have been using for about a ten year span in doing small product photography, especially jewelry. This lens is the Nikon 28-105mm lens. It is sharp and capable enough to give you outstanding professional images. This lens can also be picked up for under $200 on ebay. The Nikon 28-105mm lens also has macro capability in case you need to use it for close-up photography. In this video you'll also see samples of jewelry and small products taken with this lens. In addition, these images were also taken with an older Fuji Finepix S2. Anyone on a tight budget can get amazing and beautiful photographs using this lens along with an older Nikon or Fuji body for around $300 or possibly less. Order NOW before coupon expires. https://www.udemy.com/mastering-small-product-jewelry-photography/?couponCode=YouTube_Special Course Summary: Do you know that great looking photos can dramatically make a difference in what the perceived value is of the item you are photographing? Yes, it’s true. Several years ago I started helping my wife build her eBay business while creating the photos of jewelry and small products that she was selling. Over and over again I saw her sell her items on eBay for many times more than what she paid for them. Her items sometimes would sell for 35 or 50 times more than what she paid. Sometimes even more than that. What’s the difference between the items? Nothing, except the photos that she showed were beautiful. They were lit and composed beautifully, had interesting backgrounds and overall, had the look that you might see in the photographs displayed at high end jewelers and department stores. As the result, this gave them a much higher perceived value and her customers were willing to pay more for these items. You are probably wondering, what’s the big deal? What makes these photos look so great? Can anyone learn to take photos like these? Yes, I absolutely believe anyone can? Here’s why: I have been a professional photographer for many years. Our studio specialized in portrait & wedding photography and we were quite busy. When she asked me to help her take her photos of jewelry and small products she started selling, I started doing so in a simple, easy and quick way since I didn’t have too much time to spend on her photos, I was quite busy taking my own photos and running the studio. What started as a simple and quick photo session of her items, has evolved through the years. I was able to fine tune the lighting, the set-up and overall way we photographed her items. Our method has remained simple, quick, easy to learn, and consistent. We step into our small studio room we have designated for taking these photos, turn on the lights, and begin the photography. If you would like to learn how you can take photos of the small products or jewelry you are selling, consider enrolling in this course. Instead of photographing your items on a carpet or bed spread with bad lighting. Say NO to bad photos and start making more money.
