A rap version of William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White's classic "Elements of Style." Music by Valentino. My name is Strunk And they call me White Here to teach you how to put the pen down right I see that your writing is a little bit wild These are the Elements of Style. Will Strunk in the house but don't call me junior Grammatical genius. Number one word groomer. I teach English 8 at the school of Cornell Choose your words carefully or I'll put you through hell. E.B. White on the mic, former student of Strunk A story that flows is all I need to get crunk Write for the New Yorker, papers marked up in scarlet I spin webs with words like my name was Charlotte. "In the last analysis" That's a bankrupt expression It's clear you're not learning So listen to my lesson. Omit needless words. Good writing is concise When I was in your class, you repeated that thrice 9 times out of 10 'student body' is wrong Say students instead. Move your story right along. My name is Strunk And they call me White Here to teach you how to put the pen down right I see that your writing is a little bit wild These are the Elements of Style. Split infinitive Never definitive Sounds unintelligent Dumb and inelegant. Just say it like you meant Always write with intent Each word precious Like Benjamin's that you spent. Do not join independent clauses with a comma. But I love it, it's cool. I don't care if you wanna. Jails and schools should not be called facilities. I hate all these writers with second-rate abilities. Don't use dialect 'less your ear be good You cover East Harlem, but you ain't from the hood. Be clear brief bold with each story told If it's your goal to turn ink to gold. My name is Strunk And they call me White Now you know how to put the pen down right When I read your work, you know I'm gonna smile Those were the Elements of Style.

The Elements of Style - William Strunk Jr

00:18
The classic style manual used by the greatest!! The Elements of Style also known as "the little book" by fellow cornell students is the product of a disciplined mind forged through years of studying rhetoric, form and logic. It has helped generation after generation of writer to improve their style of writing. A. B. White described it as a "case for cleanliness, accuracy, and brevity in the use of English." "There is little or no detectable bullshit in that book" … "every aspiring writer should read it" Stephen King, On writing, 2000. " ... distinguished by brevity, clarity, and prickly good sense." The New Yorker " …if you haven't seen it yet, it's never too late to get your copy of "The Elements of Style"... one of the best books on the fundamentals of writing..." The Boston Sunday Globe "Buy it, study it, enjoy it. It's as timeless as a book can be in our age of volubility." Charles Poore, The New York Times, 1959.

My favorite pointers: 1. It's spelled "All right", not "Alright" 2. Its spelled "O.K.", not "Okay" 3. One of (the ablest men who have attacked this problem) is... notice have, not has... it is plural 4. "Who" is in general, "whom" is specific 5. One topic per paragraph. Have an additional idea? or another? Start a new paragraph. 6. Be brief. Get to the point, and eliminate unnecessary words. 7. Unnecessary words include: "the fact that", "in this case", "in this sense", "which was", "who was", "certainly", "personally", "to be quite honest", "the truth is", "one of the most" 8. Be committed with your language- don't say "rather", "quite", "pretty", "somewhat", "maybe", "might", "may", "would/could/should". Be affirmative. Either yes, or no. I will do it or I will not do it. I am or I am not. 9. Use concrete examples- time and date, names and specific people 10. When starting a sentence, "Nevertheless" is acceptable. In the middle of the sentence, "however" is acceptable. Not the other way around. 11. In regard to. NOT "in regards to" 12. Don't say it is meaningful, or interesting, or nice. These are overused, shaggy words that create no impact on the listener. Show why, do not just say. 13. Use "very" sparingly. When overused, the listener loses faith in your opinion.

The Elements of Style AUDIOBOOK by William Strunk Jr, Part 2

10:17
49 "words and expressions commonly misused", and a list of 57 "words often misspelt(words often misspelled)'' and much more! -The Elements of Style is a prescriptive American English writing style guide in numerous editions. The original was composed by William Strunk Jr., in 1918, and published by Harcourt, in 1920. E. B. White greatly enlarged and revised the book for publication by Macmillan in 1959. That was the first edition of the so-called "Strunk & White", which Time named in 2011 as one of the 100 best and most influential books written in English since 1923.[2] The audiobook (the sound used in this video) is in the US public domain so you can freely use the sound for any purpose. However, note that the video itself is not in the public domain, therefore you can use only the sound. The information for the description is taken from Wikipedia, a free encyclopaedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elements_of_Style

The Elements of Style Workbook: Writing Strategies with Grammar Book

01:02
The Elements of Style Workbook, a stand-alone writing and grammar workbook, honors the original Elements of Style masterpiece by William Strunk, Jr. published in 1920, with relevant updates for modern times. We have adapted Strunk's original Elements of Style to include essential exercises (with an answer key located in the appendix). These exercises help writers gain command of grammar as well as stylistic structures and devices through guided practice. Essential for today's writers, Strunk's original chapters regarding rules of usage and principles of composition are represented in this Elements of Style Workbook. These original lessons, along with style exercises that teach writers to flex their writing style at will, include grammar concepts, sentence writing, paragraph writing, and style writing exercises that amplify the impact of the original Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr. True to Strunk's original masterpiece, this Elements of Style Workbook addresses the most common grammar and writing issues novice writers face, which are the same grammar and writing issues that have plagued English writers for over a century. We honor Strunk's identification of these main writing challenges, and do not dilute the prominence of these points with either less difficult lessons or more advanced lessons in regard to either grammar or writing. In this way, we retain Strunk's original focus on the essentials. We have reproduced these essential lessons here and provided targeted practice to enable writers to strengthen those skills. While holding true to the original Elements of Style, this Elements of Style Workbook also amplifies some troublesome yet vital stylistic points of practice with the following augmentations: * Grammar on past perfect * Expansive style section * Excerpts from literature masters as style examples and guides None of these highly useful components were present in the original Elements of Style, nor have they been represented in any Elements of Style edition since then. Style Types included The style section draws from Noah Webster's articulate delineations of style types. Each style type draws from a master of literature illustrating that particular style. Writers are challenged to imitate, recreate, and eventually alter the styles of the given passages by shifting the writing passages from one style to another. The following style types are included: 1. Forceful writing style 2. Vehement writing style 3. Elegant writing style 4. Brief writing style 5. Copious writing style 6. Precise writing style 7. Neat writing style 8. Loose writing style 9. Feeble writing style 10. Plain writing style 11. Diffusive writing style 12. Ornamental writing style Together, these style types represent the vast majority of writing styles used by literary masters in the English language. The Elements of Style Workbook--An English writing workbook like no other With its loyalty to the highly acclaimed and extremely successful original edition of Strunk's The Elements of Style, augmented by Webster's clearly defined articulation of style types and supplemented by ample, targeted, and clear exercises for both writing and grammar, The Elements of Style Workbook offers an essential grammar and writing resource like no other. Whether you are beginning your journey to quality writing or would like to refine your command of voice and style, you will find this updated version of a tried-and-true resource, a vital aid to both grammar and writing.
