How to Install Cypress Bevel Siding

02:18
Cypress is a superior exterior siding material that offers natural beauty, with a rich grain, texture, and color that complements any architectural style. A naturally occurring preservative called cypressene makes cypress extremely decay, rot, and insect resistant. Cypress typically requires less repair and maintenance because of natural weathering, durability, cracking, and stability characteristics. Before we begin, please note that these instructions may be more restrictive than local building codes, but local building codes must be followed in instances when they are more stringent. Cypress is manufactured to perform under ordinary service conditions when stored properly, installed on structures with proper vapor retarders and ventilation, and finished and maintained in accordance with the following instructions. Cypress siding is a quality wood product dried in accordance to the Standard Specifications for Grades of Southern Cypress. Finish grades contain a maximum moisture content of 15%, whereas Common grades contain a maximum of 18%. Before installation, store cypress in an area that is undercover, dry and well-ventilated so that it achieves its in-service moisture content. Apply a finish to all surfaces, including ends. Factory applied finishes are best. In addition, walls should be designed with a vapor barrier, such as 6 mil polyethylene or foil-backed insulation to prevent moisture vapor from within the exterior wall cavity. Install cypress siding over standard sheathing material, such as building felt paper or a water-repellent wind barrier, with maximum stud spacing of 16 on-center. Two types of nails are commonly used with siding: finishing nails and siding nails. In this demonstration, we are using stainless steel siding nails with a ¼-inch head, long enough to penetrate 1-½ inches into studs, with a blunt point to reduce splitting of the siding. Remember to account for sheathing material when determining nail length. Ring shank or thread shank nails will provide increased holding power but must penetrate studs at least 1 inch. For caulking, we suggest a high-grade, non-hardening acrylic to seal gaps around windows, doors, corners, and other exterior joints. Please note that drip caps and flashing must be used over doors, windows, masonry, other types of siding, and siding returns at dormers. Corner Boards must be used at inside and outside corners. They come in several sizes, depending on the thickness of the siding. Interior corner boards must be square. To install bevel siding, begin by determining the lap. The minimum lap for bevel siding should not be less than 1 inch. For weather resistance and appearance, the butt edge of the first course of siding should coincide with the top of the window drip cap. The bottom of a siding course should be flush with the underside of the window sill. Begin installing the siding with the bottom course, blocked out with a starting strip the same thickness as the top of the siding board. Each succeeding course will overlap the upper edge of the lower course. Nail the siding to each stud or on 16-inch centers, approximately 1/8 above the overlap to allow for slight movement of the siding due to moisture change. Avoid butt joints wherever possible. Use longer sections for long stretches, like under windows and shorter lengths for areas between windows and doors. When necessary, always make butt joints over a stud, and staggered between courses as much as possible. Square cut the siding to provide a good joint at window and door casings and at butt joints, to prevent moisture penetration. Dip fresh-cut ends of siding in a water-repellent preservative before boards are nailed in place. Before finishing, repair all nail holes and surface irregularities. All surfaces should be clean and caulking should be in good condition. Seasoned cypress siding should be finished promptly at the time of installation to protect against moisture absorption, discoloration from rain, and mildew. However, under no circumstance should siding be finished when it is wet. For complete installation guidelines and proper design, storage, application, finishing, and maintenance of cypress siding, please visit www.cypressinfo.org.

Introduction to T1-11 Plywood Siding

03:54
T1-11 Siding Ever heard of it? If you're a contractor, of course you have. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, maybe not. If you haven't heard of T1-11 siding I wanted to give you a brief introduction and tell you why you might want to use it on a project. T1-11 type siding generally comes in 2 different forms. One is based on Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and the other is plywood based. You can get 4x8 sheets of either type at the local lumber store. The OSB type has a wood grain look embossed on the exterior of the sheet, whereas the plywood based T1-11 has a rough- sawn wood appearance on the exterior. Both types have vertical grooves 8 inches on center. The plywood type T1-11 is what I used so that's what I'll be talking about in this video. I like it because it has 5 plies and is about 5/8 inches thick. The edges of the sheet are half lap joints so that when it is installed you can't see the seams between sheets. T1-11 is used on all types of residential and commercial buildings. Everything from sheds, to houses, to restaurants and small office buildings. I used it to re-side a house recently and wanted to show you how it looks. Since so many houses have vinyl siding on them, T1-11 gives a unique look. Also, at $33 for a 4x8 sheet the price is reasonable. Before I show you my project, I wanted to share some things I did to the T1-11 before attaching it to the building. Since this is a wood product I wanted to paint all sides before installing it. This may seem like overkill, but I wanted to protect against future water damage. Just think of this as insurance. I also painted any edges or cuts that I made. A good paint for the finish coat is Valspar Duramax available at Lowe's. It's a paint and primer in one and is great for the exterior side of the siding but it is a bit expensive. With that in mind you probably want to buy and use a regular primer for the back side of the T1-11 sheet. Regular primer will still be over $20 a gallon but will save you some money when compared to the expense of the Valspar Duramax. Another thing you will need is caulking. The one I like is called OSI Quad Advanced Formula Sealant for windows, doors, and siding. It is paintable but comes in various colors and is flexible even in very cold temperatures and costs about $5 per tube. Now, here's some footage of my project. You can see we set up some saw horses and painted everything before we installed it. We painted the back of the siding with regular primer and we painted the front with Valspar Duramax. To make things easier and safer, we rented some scaffolding from Home Depot. Other than that we just worked across the house, one 4 by 8 sheet at a time. We removed the old rigid insulation and replaced it with 2 inch rigid insulation under the siding and taped the joints. After installing the trim, we caulked the top but left the bottom open so moisture wouldn't be trapped. Well, that's it for now and I hope you enjoyed this intro to T1-11 siding. Thanks for watching.

Siding Wars: James Hardie® VS LP SmartSide® VS Mastic® Quest (Vinyl)

16:07
Siding Wars: James Hardie® VS LP SmartSide® VS Mastic® Quest (Vinyl) http://www.stormgroupsiding.com http://www.stormgrouproofing.com Did you know there is a siding war going in on in America? There are few companies making claims that there are the best choice, attacking each other and throwing punches at competitors reputation. We have decided to put top three Siding Brands head to head to see who will win overall comparison in ten different test: durability, fire resistance, termite resistance, paint finish, maintenance, overall warranty, cost, installation, and safety. We rated each product and positioned each other per their performance accordingly. In each category each siding product could become number 1, 2, or 3. The less points overall gets you to better overall score. The results? Looks like we have a tie. Both James Hardie and Mastic Quest earned 17 points, and LP got 24 overall. All three products have weaknesses and strong points, but we wanted to rate them from consumer perspective and we think results are where they needs to be. No one scored "1" in each category, and no one got "3" in each. Results are results, and numbers don't lie. The best options on the market are Most popular, cheaper and maintenance free Vinyl Siding as well as more expensive, better looking James Hardie siding. ============================ Storm Group Residential and Commercial Roofing & Siding Contractor http://stormgrouproofing.com http://stormgroupsiding.com ============================ Let's Connect: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stormgroupro... Durasid - EN

19:31
Durasid is the perfect aesthetic cladding for side faces, gables, bay windows, dormers, garden sheds, pool houses and other constructions. Durasid offers a wide range of applications for both new-build and renovations projects. The Durasid cladding profiles are made from a rigid foam core covered with a durable, co-extruded top coat. Inside the top coat, a decorative wood grain texture is applied, so that Durasid combines the best of all other facades. Durasid has the charm and appeal of natural wood plus the ease of maintenance of plastic, which has allowed it to quickly establish itself as a smart and fully-fledged alternative to other other external wall coverings made from commonly used materials. Durasid retains its initial visual aspect and appeal for much longer than any wooden exterior cladding or a facade in a different material, which often tend look weathered and lose their appeal as time moves on.

Wood Siding vs James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding

02:16
Siding in Colorado is an important investment. With our harshly cold winters, and dry, hot summers, the choice you make in siding could mean protecting your home from the many small natural disasters that occur in our state. We’ve experienced damaging hail storms the last few years, and if you have vinyl siding, you may have experienced some serious destruction on your home. Vinyl siding is an affordable option that looks great, but it doesn’t stand up well to extreme weather conditions. http://www.coloradosiding.com/siding-choices/fiber-cement-siding

Sustainable Synthetic Siding on Point with Traditional Wood

02:47
We wanted something durable, green and sustainable that would also be attractive and authentic to the home’s appearance. Pining for a rough-hewn redwood exterior proved cost-prohibitive for an historic home renovation project. Unfortunately, the home’s exterior siding had become a patchwork from numerous repairs and alterations over the years. Extensive rot, pest damage and the need for earthquake retrofitting and waterproofing upgrades necessitated removal of the original material. You’d pay a huge premium, if you could even find it. Consequently, we sought to find an attractive, durable and cost-effective alternative for their special project and discovered Boral TruExterior® Siding & Trim. The Solution: Their TruExterior V-Rustic Siding profile matches to the T the wood that was originally used to side the home’s exterior. It reflects the look, feel and character of the charming home. It’s an historically and architecturally accurate profile. The siding is painted to further resemble the original old-growth redwood. The product consisting of 70 percent recycled content is made of the exclusive poly-ash material, a coal combustion product – otherwise bound for landfill – combined with a polymer, creating boards that can be milled and handled like wood. The synthetic siding, manufactured in the United States, is resistant to termites, moisture, rot and damage caused by environmental exposure. It also maintains its dimensional integrity and remains stable during weathering and temperature change. Same Day Repairs Why wait hours or days to complete a repair? With Bondo® Wood Filler, you can complete professional looking repairs in less than 30 minutes. The secret to a fast, permanent repair is in the 2-part technology. By mixing the filler with the cream hardener, provided with the filler, you can sand the wood filler in 15 minutes and stain or paint it in 25 minutes. Strength to Restore and Rebuild Bondo® Wood Filler can handle any wood repair ranging from the smallest to the largest of projects. Whether filling in minor furniture damage or rebuilding a missing piece of wood, the solution is Bondo® Wood Filler. When the filler and hardener are mixed, a reaction occurs which allows the filler to chemically bond to the surface you are repairing. For more advanced repairs, Bondo® Wood Filler can be applied in layers to rebuild rotted or missing pieces of wood. Unlike slower drying water or solvent based wood fillers that cure by evaporation, Bondo® Wood Filler chemically cross links to cure for a faster, more durable repair. Sikkens log and siding on Cedar wood

01:21
On this project we applied a stripping chemical to remove the old stain along with dirt and contaminants. We then neutralize the P.H. with a wood brightener. After it was dry we sealed the wood with a product called Sikkens Log and Siding in the Cedar color. This is a two coat process that provides a rich appearance and superior durability. This project was completed in Minneapolis, MN near lake Calhoun. For more information on our services please visit http://tinyurl.com/m2ys8lo

NASA Evaluation Finds LP® SmartSide® Siding More Impact Damage-Resistant Than Fiber Cement Siding

01:16
http://www.lpsmartside.com To help prove the superior durability of LP SmartSide engineered wood siding, LP Building Products asked the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to evaluate the impact damage resistance of both engineered wood siding from the LP SmartSide brand and fiber cement siding. Impact damage resistance was compared by impacting each type of siding with golf balls and baseballs, which could accidentally hit the side of a house, as well as marbles and rocks, which could be thrown from a lawn mower. High-speed video cameras were used to measure projectile speeds and view damage to the siding. According to NASA: "Under similar conditions, with all four projectiles more damage was sustained by the fiber cement siding product than the engineered wood siding product." A link to the full written evaluation can be found at LPSmartSide.com.

Cleaning Wood Siding

01:45
We cleaned this wood siding without a pressure washer. After we cleaned it with our solution, we rinsed with water and then sprayed Bleach Wash to stop the cleaning action. This is a typical result when cleaning most wood surfaces like fences, decks etc.

Problems Caulking Bottom of Siding - Water Damage Tips

03:56
http://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/repairs/siding/index.html Some home repair methods make sense, even though they shouldn't be used. Caulking the bottom of the siding isn't going to be beneficial to your house and will prevent any water that gets behind the wood siding to roll off of the front of the building paper correctly. The pictures that you will see in the video show some of the water and termite damage, simply because someone caulked the bottom of the siding. Not all of the damage came from the caulked siding, the siding was also installed incorrectly. I've ran into this type of siding damage often during my many travels working on homes and I truly believe that things like these make a lot of sense to intelligent people and I can understand why they do it. If you really want some good advice about siding installation, you should read the manufacturer's installation instructions and follow them. I've seen professional home builders and even carpenters who have worked in the industry for many years do the same thing. If you have any more tips or advice about siding damage, you can post them in the text comment area on this webpage.

Fiber Cement vs LP SmartSide vs insulated Vinyl Siding Water bucket test

After several months both the LP and Hardie are performing well. Because Hardie is a fiber cement (water based) product it has absorbed more water, but panel edges are performing well.

How to Paint Exterior Trim and Wood Home Siding

06:16
A fresh coat of paint is the best way to make the outside of a home look better. Before painting, be sure to prep the exterior properly. Once it is prepped, you will be ready to go. For this project you will need: exterior pant, stir sticks, rollers, brushes, roller grid, a ladder and masking supplies. To figure out how much paint you will need visit https://www.Lowes.com/Calculators. For any outdoor project, use acrylic latex paint. It drys quickly, is resistant to fading and cleans well with water. When beginning to paint, work from side to side from the top down. Start by cutting in around the trim with a brush, and don't forget to paint the under part of the siding. Once a section is cut in, you can paint with the face with a roller. Work in sections, and do not stop in the middle. After every side of the house is painted, you can now paint the trim. Mask the windows and using a trim brush, paint from top to bottom in clean even strokes. If you need to stop mid project, it is important to properly store your paint and paint brushes. Using the roller grid, rid any excess paint from the roller. Cover the bucket of paint with the lid. Using plastic wrap, wrap the brushes and rollers and store in a shaded area. Once you are finished, be sure to check for any spots you may have missed and touch up. Clean your supplies, and take a step back and see the refreshing look of your home. Exterior wood siding painting preparation - tips, tools, how to guide

03:18
Exterior painting can make a drastic improvement in the look of your home. When the surface is prepared correctly, you'll have piece of mind the paint job will last. Follow these steps for exterior paint removal and preparation: 1. Pressure wash the exterior to remove dirt, mold and pollutants. During this process you will also remove loose paint. 2. Scrape and pound in loose nails. We prefer a replaceable carbide blade with a handle for pounding loose nails. 3. Sand the surface to remove dead wood and feather out old paint. 4. Blow off the surface to remove dust. 5. Caulk expansion joints, making sure to wait the required dry time before priming. 6. Mask the windows, lights, etc. 7. Prime where needed. In our case we used peel bond primer. 8. Top coat. In our case we used Duration.
