What happened to the cards you have collected are over 2 years old? Wouldn't that be a waste if they are cast aside?
Dojob Man (5 months ago)
Standard isn’t the most popular. Modern and commander are more popular, just saying jimmy
Astro Games (6 months ago)
Ugh, no one else in my family ever wants to play any card games and I'm trying to get into magic right now.

I have a question though & humor me here it's my 1st time trying to play the game. Would Artifacts &/or Artifact Creatures count as spells & creatures? See I have a deck built of fire & nature as my 1st deck & did what you're clip says about the number of different cards but you didn't mention the artifact ones. & Idk how I should add them. If you could help me out with that I would appreciate it alot.
Uganda Knuckles (9 months ago)
A spell is any nonland card that has been played and thus placed on the stack. A card is only a spell when it is on the stack. Artifact creature is still a creature and a spell
Paxton Keskitalo (10 months ago)

Tuba whale (11 months ago)
just bought a pack of cards today. they cant be used in standard edit:also am i the only one who feels its difficult to find fun in magic, when you need to buy a new card set to play in standard every 2 years?
PP Hyjynx (8 months ago)
other formats exist, Modern and Legacy are eternal formats, you can use any cards in them (Modern only allows cards from 8th edition and up though)
Xx_ua_xX Gameplay (1 year ago)
So... If I play with a standar deck from the most recent set I have to change decks every 2 years???
PP Hyjynx (8 months ago)
well no, they have set rotation, so here's an example: When you start first playing you can use Sets A, B, C and D to make your deck, but then set E comes out, this means that set A is no longer allowed to be used, so you take out all of the cards in your deck from set A and replace them with cards from Sets B, C, D and E. And it keeps going like that.

So.. if I play standard, does it mean I have to have a new deck each 2 years?

The Humin (1 year ago)
There aren't any shops I can play magic in nearby cause I live in the UK and most of my friends don't know what it is.:-(
Raul Lapeira (3 months ago)
Your virginity is safe!
PP Hyjynx (8 months ago)
TheScotchaholic How delightfully offensive. Just so you know the UK has a higher average IQ than the USA, so idk where you're getting that from.
TheScotchaholic (1 year ago)
Most are too dumb to play. Their heads would explode if they tried to wrap their heads around it - which explains why so few females play MTG or any other card/board/RPG/video game. Find online versions to play against others if there is nothing local by your area.
Kevin Hodgson (1 year ago)
The Humin Do you live in the Highlands up in Scotland or something? Most places in England that I know have multiple places to play.
rondar2 (1 year ago)
Sooooo... I recently took my cards out of the box they were sitting in for 20 years to start playing again but the video says older than 2 years is not standart. I will need to bend the rules a bit it seems :)
PP Hyjynx (8 months ago)
Legacy and Modern are both formats that allow older cards
FinLord87 (1 year ago)
promos.... about that...
Sorual (1 year ago)
At my LGS, there is almost NEVER enough people to justify a standard day. Ever since siege rhino, everyone at my LGS plays either draft, modern, or commander.
Thomas Wilson (1 year ago)
Legacy is my favorite, it's the most richest format, with fair decks as well as good combo decks.
PP Hyjynx (8 months ago)
Legacy is stale friend, if you want diversity and fairness, then EDH is the way to go.
Slothful Gaming (1 year ago)
i dont have any friends to play with :-(
Damnationization (4 months ago)
Go to your local store, learn about Friday night Magic, and play at a pre-release.
Maurice De Kinder (1 year ago)
Jimmy, you are so nice
Shadow Fan (1 year ago)
PP Hyjynx (8 months ago)
TheScotchaholic no it really isn't, Draft is the most popular worldwide, then it's Modern, Then EDH, Then It's Standard, those are the facts.
TheScotchaholic (1 year ago)
Facts are facts, whether you like them or not. YOUR group or region may have something else popular, but, as a whole, standard IS the most popular.
Bota64 (1 year ago)
It kinda sucks you can ONLY use cards sets from the past two years :(
Damnationization (4 months ago)
You can also play casual. This is just any cards.
Nanofuture87 (1 year ago)
You don't though. That's only for Standard; if you want to play with older cards, you can play Modern, Legacy, Commander, etc.
Rafael A P Nascimento (1 year ago)
What about the older than 2 years sets?
Damnationization (4 months ago)
You can also play casual with friends and use the cards you like. :)
Nathan Solomon (1 year ago)
Rafael A P Nascimento They rotate out (You can't play those cards) but you can play them in non rotating formats (Modern, Commander, ect.)
Orlando Rotundo (1 year ago)
Note that older versions of standard reprints are also legal. For example Opt from Invasion.
Nanofuture87 (1 year ago)
I mean, it was kinda divisive, but now it's just been sort of dying off as far as I can tell. If you have a group that likes playing it then you do your thing, but it's not really comparable to the official formats.
Vaughn La Voice (1 year ago)
WOTC acting like Modern isn't the favorite format bc it doesn't sell booster packs. Its clear they are trying to get rid of the biggest, most celebrated format. Modern GPs are huge, everywhere.
Nanofuture87 (1 year ago)
+Turai12 I wouldn't call it cheap, but in the long run it tends to be less expensive than the other formats (Pauper being the main exception). With Draft and Standard you're constantly buying new cards, and with Legacy and (optimized) Commander you start getting into the true dual lands.
Turai12 (1 year ago)
It's also a format exclusive for rich people... or people with no other hobbies to speak of. Shit be expensive.
Nanofuture87 (1 year ago)
_They removed Modern from PTs_ This was actually good for the format. _reduced the number of Modern GPs_ Modern GPs in 2015: 8 Modern GPs in 2016: 9 Modern GPs in 2017: 10 _stopped talking about the format in general_ Modern Masters 2017 came out 3 months ago.
Vaughn La Voice (1 year ago)
For now yes. But look at the trends of the past year or two. They removed Modern from PTs, reduced the number of modern GPs, and stopped talking about the format in general. WOTC knows eternal formats don't sell booster packs and that is exactly why they want to distance themselves from eternal formats over time. When a multi-million dollar company gets rid of something, they do it slowly over time. Unless its Emerakul..
Nanofuture87 (1 year ago)
If they were trying to get rid of Modern, they wouldn't do Modern GPs.

My fav format right now is naked commander. Can't seem to keep a playgroup together though... :l

That's because you don't hold the cards with your hands. :)

Commander and Modern are the most popular. Standard is too frustrating and limited, with stuff constantly rotating out.
Jim Harris (2 months ago)
"Constantly" is a strong word, especially if they keep to the 2-year swap out.
Jon Howard (3 months ago)
I thought it was quite convenient that they neglected to mention Modern and Commander
Richard Perez (5 months ago)
Popular means people that play objectively, not individual value judgments.
Nanofuture87 (1 year ago)
I prefer Modern myself, but Standard is definitely played more.
RedCpt (1 year ago)
Let's be honest, there is only 1 way. EDH MASTER RAAAAAAYYCE
RedCpt (1 year ago)
Nanofuture87 I was being intentionally ridiculous.
Nanofuture87 (1 year ago)
You do you, but there are people who don't really like EDH.

Steel Dom (1 year ago)
What you described is pretty much Conspiracy. Check it out, if you don't know it yet. It's a blast to draft!
chochky (1 year ago)
They should release cubes as occasional supplemental products. Like a pack of ~360 cards (including new cards specifically designed for that cube) meant to be drafted or to play sealed.
Old Greg MTG (1 year ago)
Commander and modern are the most popular in my area. Fnm is commander and we play modern on Thursday and Sunday. We never have 8 for gameday. (I haven't played standard since 2013)
DJ Bourdeau (1 year ago)
Do you draft basic land cards?
Forte Fermata (1 year ago)
David Bourdeau Typically your game store should provide basics for you to use, but I know many players (myself included) like to use certain arts so you can bring your own, although Basic Lands are the only cards you can use from outside your personal draft/sealed pool.
BlyatGaming01 (1 year ago)
David Bourdeau No neither in sealed

wrong commander is the most popular format
Jim Harris (2 months ago)
It's the most popular casual format, maybe.  I'm pretty sure Jimmy is referring to sanctioned formats that WotC has actual numbers for.
The Command Zone (1 year ago)
FenrirEX This is based off of personal view and some of what WotC has said in the past. For instance we just finished GP Vegas, where we held the single largest gathering of Commander players, ever, at around 500 people. Players had every incentive to attend our free event, win giveaways, and receive free stuff. This number is still just a small percentage of those registered for the paid main events, like Modern, Legacy, or Limited. Commander is popular, but by just looking at any GP, it is obvious that it is not close to the most popular format for players. -jimmy
FenrirEX (1 year ago)
The Command Zone Can we get the metrics on this? Are we only talking official play, kitchen table? Was this free-response? Data can be massaged, after all.
Vaughn La Voice (1 year ago)
Emmet Chamberlin (1 year ago)
I assume that they gather most of their statistics from tournaments and since standard is their most pushed format, most tournaments are standard. The most popular format could be kitchen table magic since so many people don't comprehend the rules extremely well or are just more focused on fun than competition. Commander is definitely a popular format though, surely more played than vintage or legacy and if your circle of friends prefers fun over high competition then commander is usually the format of choice, although any format can be fun and competitive.
