Advice For Returning MTG Players: http://youtu.be/aq8fy8cbSGE Journey Into Nyx Crack-A-Pack: http://youtu.be/BGplZZ2caOA How To Double-Sleeve And WHY: http://youtu.be/FZ2tMSQcBr0 A Guide To Playmats: http://youtu.be/0HOjmAB4WaA Is It Worth It To Buy A Duel Deck: http://youtu.be/SQZy_97IxpM Is your Magic collection too big for a fat pack box? Are your cards in dissaray? Many Magic: The Gathering players ask the question, "How should I store and organize my collection?" This is a question whose answer will vary depending on what kind of collection you have. For the purposes of this video, I'll be talking about organizing and storing larger, long-term collections. Please remember: this is meant as a guideline, and not an absolute rule. The precise nature of how you organize and store your cards will be personal to you and your needs. Please consider doing an update to this video. Perhaps include things like shelving and rolling storage options.

My wife and I adopted this exact sorting method, and it has been a huge time saver. Thanks!

NEVER EVER USE RUBBER BANDS! Over time they melt, and mess your cards up.

awesome video man, im just now getting into magic and these are very helpful :)
William Jeanrie (1 month ago)
I dont differentiate between rarity at all... call me weird but i dont nesscessarily think a card is better simply because its rarer. set and colour though of course. i have a few drawers with plenty of boxes... i can fit most of my cards in the boxes that cards come in (dunno what theyre called... the mtg boxes that have art and a set name on em), dont even have a binder, but it works for me :P Great vid as always though prof :)
Gaming Group Knight (1 month ago)
At the 5 year mark on this topic, is this a topic worth updating? I know I've added sleeving foils and high dollar cards in binders and in boxes. Just asking...

How to increase your Magic: the gathering collection. I need this
george pitt (2 months ago)
what I did, is once my collection got too big to be sorted by color only, I started to get fat packs (or bundles, I guess) from every new set. all the new cards I get, go in a bundle of that set. as time goes on, I get new fat packs (bundles) from older and older sets too, and pick out the cards in that set and put them in that fat pack. after some time, it gets expensive to get a new fat pack, so I'd get a newer one, cover it in masking tape, and label it with something from the set I want to put there. then I have easily recognizable boxes from different sets. then, within those boxes, I sort them by rarity, then by color, then alphabetically. (that's just how I do it)
george pitt (2 months ago)
and the reason I do this instead of bcw boxes is because I don't actually end up buying that many cards from each set, I'd just get singles and have tons of decks laying around. if I got bcw boxes, they'd be half empty and just take up more space, and I'd rather have two fat packs from one random set than one bcw box half filled for the other 12 sets or something like that
Simon Willis (2 months ago)
I was just looking for something like this 👍
Nanashi Personne (3 months ago)
I wildly mix differents sets and order my cards to certain keywords like scry, draw, damage or neutralize. I find it easier to build decks around like this.

My cards are slightly bent. Any suggestions as to what causes it?

^Gecko^ (8 months ago)
Not hard to alphabetize sets that have numbers (263/350) on the bottom. putting them in numerical order automatically alphabetizes and color codes them.
Levi Stepanian (8 months ago)
I honestly just stack my cards if they're the same copy i dont have valuable enough cards so it doesn't matter yet
Souma Spiritus (8 months ago)
I chose to assort the bulk relatively the same way, but with some added extras: Step 1) Sort by color Step 2) Sort by set Step 3) Sort by rarity Step 4) Sort alphabetically Step 5) If there is alternate art: Step 5a) Sort by original first (should be closest to the end of the box depending on where the art faces) Step 5b) Sort by reprint years (The oldest is placed behind the original and the newest should be last)
Souma Spiritus (8 months ago)
Is this needlessly detailed? Yes. Izzet worth it? Yes.

I can't believe that you aren't sleeving your cards, like at all? Personally i've always got 100s of cheapo ones in for storing cards with to protect against fingerprints and what not. Then, when i need to use them i'll put a second "fancy" sleeve on it. Am i the only one here?...
Coffee Caesar (8 months ago)
If you're like me and you have nothing but time, you can sort out your cards by Mana cost.
Blake Evans (9 months ago)
If u only play sealed you will have a smaller collection, that makes no sense
SHAWN SHEPHERD (9 months ago)
i prefer instead of putting rares and foils in a binder i put them in ultra pro hard plastic sleeves to keep them in great condition and it works well
Jeffrey Terleckyj (9 months ago)
As a book shelver at a library, alphabetization would be nessesary.

I recently got back to magic. Been sorting to BCW 1000 card boxes. I sort each colour to creatures, enchantments, sorceries and instants. I keep lands in a bundle box (fat pack box).
Soranima (10 months ago)
Great help
Captain McPants (11 months ago)
Do you find it necessary to increase your sorting categories based on the number of cards you own in those categories (or their subcategories, for that matter)? E.g. At common rarity, a set will have about as many creatures as every other type in its colour combined. In this case, sorting by type alone means that it's more difficult to find a given creature in white than any other common type of white. How do you handle "arbitrary" subdivisions? Do you update non-rare cards according to format legality? What if a card changes rarity?

I've found that holiday gift boxes worked until they stopped making those

Are there any storage boxes out there that can hold toploaders? I keep my Alpha and Beta Cards in toploaders but I can't find good and sturdy boxes they fit in.
VivaLaRowsdower (11 months ago)
My girlfriend and I have a custom system involving the following: 1x Binder of rares, mythics and foils separated by labeled tabs for Standard, Modern and C/U Foils, respectively. 1x Binder with index pages locating favorite Tokens, Sorceries, Instants, Legendary Creatures, non basic lands and Enchantments 1x Binder with tabs delineating our favorite tribes (e.g. Elves, Vampires, Zombies, etc.)

hey professor, I've been trying to find ways to store sealed MTG booster packs. is there any way you can make a video about this more in a future vid segment? in pokemon, we use double sleeving with the card saver I and then something like a perfect fit PSA case sleeve over that, and that works nicely. mtg packs are a bit thicker, so I've been trying to find a good way to double sleeve the booster packs for collection storage. appreciate any tips!
Sanel Grgic (11 months ago)
Whats the best way to store foils?
William Simkulet (11 months ago)
I think Alphabetizing is a mistake. I prefer to sort by mana cost (Creatures up front, then by type) within a color, and "cycle" or "color" in lands.
Brock McKelvey (11 months ago)
I miss the old gift boxes (like from Kaladesh) that doubled as storage boxes. I'm using one for my medium-sized collection and it's working perfectly.
Fellipe Cicconi (1 year ago)
Prof, you should touch this subject again. Especially when we are very near from another rotation.

This comment is very late, but I personally havn't touched a magic card in twelve years... Until earlier this week when I cleaned out a storage area and found a giant box of cards dating to my teenage years. This time capsule of MTG immediately set me on a path to once again becoming a casual player. I also quickly found your channel, and have been burning through your video's in an attempt to catch up on formats like Modern and Pauper. But this video specifically is what I needed. Teenage me was not organized. I would often come back from a draft night and add my cards to a random box... twelve years later, I now need to finally sort the 3-4 thousand commons and uncommons; of which I had no idea where to start. Thank you for this video! and your content is exceptional
Thumpdizzle (1 year ago)
So I made the mistake of buying one of those 3x4 "card houses"... Yes they are great if they rent gonna get moved. But they are also very fragile.
Hannah Hart (1 year ago)
Also, I'm very much a casual player too! Probably explains why I wouldn't organize by set
Hannah Hart (1 year ago)
Um... U don't have to sort by set right? That seems so fancy to me haha. I just do it by color and I guess I could start labeling common and uncommons for each color too 😇 I'd like that thx for the advice!
Hannah Hart (1 year ago)
Tolarian Community College you know.. Ur the first youtuber EVER who has replied to a comment I've made on this app and not to mention so quickly even if it was from how long ago. U replying makes ur channel feel more genuine and community-like for me going on YouTube. I automatically subbed just for you doing that, have watched a few of ur other vids too. Ur very informative and knowledgeable about mtg and I appreciate that so much. I especially loved ur video about u explaining that you'd much rather have kids play mtg than doing whatever else they could be doing with their time. 😇 have a great day mtg teach! The YouTube community appreciates you! 😇
Absolutely you do not. Think of this video as a guide, but not hard rules. It gives you ideas, a starting point, but the goal is for you to sort via a system that is best for you. Different players will have different systems. Many don't know how to begin, and that was the intent here.

If you use a binder for your rares, what should you be using a portfolio for?

How can I find what cards are move out of standard, is there a website????
einhorn303 (1 year ago)
I basically have a 3 pool system, with the cards sorted by color within those pools: Pauper playables, Commander playables, and all other bulk. A lot of storage solutions depend on your favored formats and other personal needs.

Professor, I just recently returned to Magic and stumbled across your channel. Thank you for all of the great videos! I have a question though: What is the advantage of storing rares in binders instead of in top loaders inside boxes with the commons and uncommons?
Oxturnity (1 year ago)
Am I the only one who penny sleeves commons just so they don’t get edgeware in the boxes?
dungeonmaster16 (1 year ago)
At 3:55 for the ad card part what I do is I get penny sleeves (if ppl don't know it's literally avg 1 buck for 100 loose sleeves, mainly use to sleeve common/uncommon no to low value foils to keep them in good condition but good to sleeve ads and make as tabs) for them and put between them. Helps a lot for my sorting ways.

I'm not into Magic the Gathering but this applies to all card games. I collect yugioh cards and the way I store my bulks are in a regular collection binders with binder sleeves. Don't ask why I did that cause I started doing that like 13 years ago. I really wanna remove the bulks and separate them in sets, but the fact is I have so much binder sleeves that I have no clue what to do with them since I store my rares and holo cards in actual quality binders. I store everything on my little desk where everything looks so clustered. It requires a lot of room if you wanna build a big card collection. Obviously if I purchase a shelf like that my room will be full.
RMQuarter (1 year ago)
I got a 1600 card box and I am going to use it for old cards and then use my origins and amonkhet builders tool kit boxes to store standard cards, because I dont usually have large collections
Bosko Jal (2 years ago)
Careful when storing your cards in sleeve sheets binders, if you store your binder vertically, the weight of cards will bend the sleeves and also your cards
SwitchBladeX89 (2 years ago)
The Professor: "Is your Magic The Gathering collection to big for a fat pack box?" Me, Looking at my three BCW 800 count boxes FULL of MTG cards: "...YES!" 😅
Jackson Hill (2 years ago)
where did you get the pictures of the set symbols?
Ryan Clarke-Byrne (2 years ago)
Hey I have that ikea shelf in my living room
Mikael Bloomqvist (2 years ago)
Personally, I divided all of my cards by their color and have one or two colored binders to store them in... plus a binder for artifacts and one for multi color, non standard lands and tokens. I divided them all by creatures, instants, sorcery, and enchantments.. then by sub groups of those groups. It makes it easier to find cards that play off each other. I try to keep them all sorted by expansion within all that as well. It works for me, anyway. Regular lands I keep in the fat packs. I hate to think of a world where I have too many lands to fit in my fat packs.
Thanks this really helped

I'm curious to see how the new BitBox and Bitbox Mobile would work with organizing magic cards. You can order add-on foam for protection. Has anyone tried these yet?
Christopher Combs (2 years ago)
i use the 5k+ 5 row box but that just for colored commons from mana cost 1 - 3 mana cost 4 and up go in fat pack boxes uncommons get the 800 size box treatment also organized by mana cost basic lands taje up 5 1k count boxes non basice lands colorless cards and multi-color cards and tokens get their own 1k box rares and cards im brewing with at the time go in 2 fat pack boxes abd my 26 playable decks, my sliver collection, my planes chase, and arch enemy cards go in a carry case but thats me
rojoshow13 (2 years ago)
I sort my Pokemon cards by type, and alphabetize, and also keep the evolution cards with each other. This has proven challenging since some sets have a Pokemon as one type but another type in another set. And some Pokemon evolve into multiple different Pokemon of different types. It's a constant and neverending effort of moving a card from one place to another.

Why are BCW boxes so expensive? I tried ordering from BCW, but the site told me that the shipping would be nearly 100$, then I checked other sellers, as well as eBay and Amazon, and the markup is ridiculous. Any alternatives?
TheMonyarm (2 years ago)
My LGS does have 1 BCW box, a big one for all the bulk, but it's very beat up, and is the only BCW box they have.
Nanofuture87 (2 years ago)
I bring it up because most stores use something like BCW boxes to store their bulk singles, so they can be organized by set like in the Profs video.
TheMonyarm (2 years ago)
They sell singles, not sure what that has to do with anything ? They've got one really big box for all of the bulk, while everything else is in a binder.
Nanofuture87 (2 years ago)
That's... bizarre. Do they not sell singles?
TheMonyarm (2 years ago)
My LGS doesn't have them, they have pre-release boxes galore, but not BCW boxes.
I have a collection of over 30k cards, where almost nothing is more than 4 copies of a given card. (believe me, your collection gets a LOT smaller when you pare it down like that)... With a collection this large it takes like 35x of those 800 count boxes to hold all the cards. The collection has gotten so large that I HAD to get really really organized or I could not quickly get to any cards I needed, or even worse I could not keep track of what cards I needed to trade for or buy. After paring down the collection to playsets... I then entered the entire collection into software. At first, Magic Workstation. Now it's MTG Studio/Echo MTG. So every time I get new cards I have to take those new cards and first check if I already have copies of that card from previous sets or the same set. If not, I add them to the electronic database and then physically put them into the collection. YES it's a LOT of work... but - I know exactly what I have - I know exactly what the value is of my collection and cards - I can build a deck in a few minutes - I don't trade for or buy cards that I already have (makes me efficient) - If I want to make a trade I can immediate know if I need the card being offered or tell my trade partner if I have the card(s) he's going for. - If I ever wanted to insure my collection I have the data required to do so. - The automated tools inform me on price movements. After playsets of cards I don't use move up I trade/sell them for cards I need and do use. So yes, it's a huge time investment. But after doing this for 20 years I can tell you it's worth the effort. After posting this, I'll try to attach pictures of my cards in drawers (before I 3D printed dividers) and a picture of the dividers I 3D printed. (Edit: tried to attach pictures, didn't work. Sorry.)
Staine2009 (2 years ago)
Nice way to sort and store. Here is my way to sort my cards (rare and myth). I sort them by colors and then by type. For example : Black card. Enchantment together, Creature together (only rare) Instant, Sorcery, Legendary creature (for commander purpose) Mythic (Instant, enchant, whatever) For multi-colored card I sort them by "Guild" such as all the azorius goes together and I separate mythic and Legendary again. In multicolored I don't sort by card type. I donc have enough card which still justified this structure for now. For 3+ colored I put them together without any sorting excpet for legendary and mythic (for commander purpose again). Then I separate my lands card by "guild" colors or duo-colors. I also put common lands which are ofter used in commander in those binder. Oh and I forgot, planeswalker are regroup together. I dont look after their colors too. For the common and uncommon, I sort them the same way you do Tolarian ! :D I just wonder if it's valuable to keep a playset of each common/uncommon ? :/ (some are usefull... some are just useless). How can I process with un-wanted common/uncommon which are ofter worthless ?
Roofne telvin (2 years ago)
How can i do for common and uncommon card who cost many money like aether vial, lightning bolt or path to exile ? I put sleeve or i take a binder ?
Azathoth Cuetlachtli (2 years ago)
3:03 how did you made those dividers? did you tape them to something or how did you made that?
Azathoth Cuetlachtli (2 years ago)
I'm going to take some tips from this video, I find having my cards divided by color, type and then mana cost is easier and better than rarity (ej: Commons separated from uncommons)
Rapidcheetah (2 years ago)
I feel like this is way too late to ask, but where do you find the prints for the set symbols?
adamant12345 (2 years ago)
How does your tip for easy sorting using mainly loose binder sheets sit with your reviews of bound card folios? My temptation is to getting good quality card folios but that means not being able to switch sheets of cards out so easily...
adamant12345 (2 years ago)
Am I the only person that finds loose binder sheets curl at the corners and cause the cards themselves to curl? Only the sheets that are towards the middle and back flatten under the weight of the other cards for me...
