Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
ThePremordialGod yup: you can always set a max limit. I release two videos per month, and you can set your pledge to be charged for one of those videos and not the other. for example: I pledge $5, with a max limit of $5. creator uploads the first time (which I pay for), then uploads the second time (which i don't pay for).
ThePremordialGod (1 year ago)
Hey there, I am interested in supporting you on Patreon, but I want to control my budget by supporting you at my own pace, not that at which you put out content. Are there options to support you per month rather than per video released?
ManlyMadMoose (3 hours ago)
Sometimes I'm like "Eh, I don't got time at the moment", and it's always a mistake, because your videos are always top-notch, and a true work of skill and effort
Theon (11 days ago)
This is by far my favorite magic related content on Youtube. I've kept up with it even when I'm not playing the game itself. Please don't stop making it. at least until you run out of artists
Bob z (2 months ago)
Can you analize Ryan Pancoast? he has amazing artwork regarding color, light and brush stroke. Congrats, your videos are amazing.

every time i see Wurmcoil Engine i can barely hold my tears, bcause when i was 12 y.o. dumb kid, i attended at local tournament, everybody paid the price and was given ~10 boosters. If i remember correctly, my wurmcoil was the best drop (i did not know that back then). After a tounament some neckbeard guy asked me trade wurmcoil for a planeswalker (sarkhan vol it vas), and i took a bait and sold my wurm to the satan. And now i'm back to Magic and i need this fucking guy in my commander deck
Tom Lecluyse (4 months ago)
@Rhystic Studies, do you practice arts yourself? you seem to have really good understanding of it

I dont see swanland as a one-trick pony, just a man who knows what he’s good at.
Noah Wysocki (6 months ago)
It was rather difficult to narrow down which of Raymond's work in MTG would be my favourite, I adore his style in general so if I just listed all the ones I was looking between there would be several paragraphs of just listing names. The one I settled on was Sanctum of the Spirit Dragon, it's such a majestic, cinematic moment that invites to mind not just the moment depicted, but the moment immediately after it, when Ugin comes to a rest in the air and all that ghostly energy swims around him. Like much of his work it's a moment of triumph that gives a thrill no matter how many times I see it.
YourPalWicker (6 months ago)
Iv'e waited for this video, Raymond Swanland is one of my favorite artists.

Wurmcoil Engine by Swanland is my second favorite piece in the history of MtG, after Angelic Destiny, and Angelic Destiny has some similar elements to his work. I love playing with his art.

I wonder if the metallic worm from transformers was inspired by wurmcoil
killua zoldyck (8 months ago)

Album covers for metal bands? Not a surprise, lol. I love Swanland almost as much as Spencer.
Irishlawyer (8 months ago)
Some of my favorite Swanland art is from Ixalan; Deeproot Champion or World Shaper, particulary.
Luke Bowar (8 months ago)
Do eytan zana please! His avacyn restored basic land art alone is deserving
castle MAINEiac (9 months ago)
Underappreciated this channel is.

I really like his art for the new Merforlk, World Shaper. The coloring on that is just amazing.
Lucas Lopes (10 months ago)
Chris Rahn is a big name right now, I also enjoy looking at Cynthia Sheppard's work and Tyler Jacobson's. I would love to have some videos on these three if you were looking for video topics and whatnot.
Owen Sullivan (10 months ago)
He is my favourite magic artist
The futurists were fascist propagandists. Not the greatest of integrity for an artform. It does undenaiably looks good though.
Jackson Mccreery (10 months ago)
Can we talk about how he managed to make THOUSAND WINDS. A card depicting a vortex (i.e. a smooth spiral) *spiky*? Like, holy shit.
Andrew Zheng (1 year ago)
My favorite 2 arts in magic are the two wurmcoil engines from scars of mirrodin :)
Andrew Colen (1 year ago)
Thank you! This is a really important and amazing show. Art talk does not get enough time.

Mariusz Michalski (1 year ago)
Talkin about Swanland and no word about the most heavy metal card in MTG - Thraximundar?
Jonah Azzopardi (1 year ago)
These are great! Your delivery and thought is amazing. As a mostly line/ink-based artist, I wonder, do you have a Quinton Hoover video planned at any point? Either way I look forward to your future videos. :)
mysterioso2006 (1 year ago)
He's definitely a skilled artist, I think that's impossible to argue. But to me, his art comes off as extremely edgy and save for a few notable examples his visual aesthetic seems kind of bland.
wiart alexandre (1 year ago)
Thank you for this video. "Fear and Loathing in GP Vegas" nice one lol!
Aleksander K (1 year ago)
not my personal favorite artist - by thank you for a good presentation!
Zaza Bro (1 year ago)
I've only played a small amount of Magic, but I love these videos. They're classy, well edited and very enjoyable to watch.
Andrew Razborov (1 year ago)
Kev Walker next?
pickles623 (1 year ago)
my favorite artist :)
Nick Stelzer (1 year ago)
Love these! Stoked every time I see a new one. I feel like Svetlin Velinov would be an awesome video!
Aquificae (1 year ago)
I love this channel's "holistic" (I hate this word because of new age freaks, but ok) way of looking at Magic. There's so much about this game besides logic and mechanics. Binge watching for like 2 hours already, and loving every second.
All Things Aggro (1 year ago)
He is by far the best magic artist.
Troels Skovrup (1 year ago)
How do i buy magic illustraitions?
Nicholas Loran (1 year ago)
I come from an engineering/physics background, and am perhaps the farthest thing from a creative mind. So when I say that your passion and perspective for/on these artists work has changed my view and inspired me to look more deeply into this new world, it's a type of compliment I can't say I've made many times! Thank you, and keep up the great work raising the YouTube content bar!
nickjoeb (1 year ago)
His art is fantastic!
bOLT (1 year ago)
I will never see art differently again. This is my new favorite channel.
TheElectriboss (1 year ago)
My favorite artist is Peter Mohrbacher, but swanland has some amazing pieces.
Mr. Pandabites (1 year ago)
As always, this was a fantastic dissection of one of my favourite artists in Magic's history. I'm surprised you didn't mention the art of Richard Kane Fergusson in relation to him though, as his work most closely resembles Swanland's in both form and intention. I'd love you to please do a video on Mark Tedin, who is probably my favourite artist in all of MTG's history. Or perhaps a video talking about the general sameness of modern mtg art as opposed to its prior diversity. I would love to see the work of Scott Kirchner, Scott M. Fischer, Adam Rex, D. Alexander Gregory, Tedin and RKF back in magic. I feel it has been too long since we saw truly interesting and unique art in a set of magic. The beauty of Magic's art has really fallen to an increased focus on unified art direction and this is not a good thing.
icyphilippe (1 year ago)
how abouth Rob Alexander next ?
Sacha Daenens (1 year ago)
I always liked his art, but knowing he was with Oddworld Inhabitants just deifies him in my book...
Dylan Noonan (1 year ago)
Love your content man keep it up
Jakub Morawski (1 year ago)
Hey Sam! Can you please help a begginer YouTuber and tell me what kind of video editing software do you use? I love every single of your videos and I'm always stunned by the quality of them. Cheers! :)
Jakub Morawski (1 year ago)
Thank you a ton!
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
I use Premiere Pro to edit and Photoshop to prepare many of the images in every video :)
PMPMPMPM (1 year ago)
bro...you gotta release more content. Or start a podcast.
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
heh. twice a month is my maximum; the quality nosedives otherwise.

When will you get to Jaime Jones?! :)
Pogchamp ! (1 year ago)
Can you do an artist study video on Jason chan please? I think his work is really good
Pedro Sugane (1 year ago)
I dont know what the Patrons have choosen, but Zoltan Boros is too prolific - AND good - of an artist to not have a video, at least on the list of "anytime soon"
Lorenzo Tii (1 year ago)
wow Sam this was another amazing art video. keep if up
Matt Simpson (1 year ago)
Can I make a request for Rebecca Guay?
Joao Paulino (1 year ago)

Owen Wild (1 year ago)
Do Ryan Yee!
Zachary Lindahl (1 year ago)
please do one on Steve Argyle, he is very talented and has done lots of work for l5r and DND. it seems most magic players brush him off because they only remember him for bbe and lotv but he has many iconic cards played in all formats
MTG MTGYOUTUBE (1 year ago)
This video was really well done. Research and analysis. Very nice. Thanks.
Dylan Teno (1 year ago)
I'm really glad you've covered Raymond Swanland! His art really speaks to me. I'm not familiar with a lot of artists but he has created my favourite pieces - the greatest art I have ever seen.
Fabrox Fabrox (1 year ago)
That intro was amazing Sam, great work!
Tyler Schreck (1 year ago)
Not to be rude but this video felt rushed, the content was quality as always but did you try and talk quicker to make the video shorter?
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
...it's the longest video I've made this year?
bartholomewfargo (1 year ago)
Of all of the current artists, Raymond Swanland is my favorite. Every piece looks so detailed and involved, and as you point out full of action. I do wish for the old art styles to pop up once in a while (Drew Tucker, Anson Maddocks, Richard Kane Ferguson to name a few), Mr. Swanland's output is top notch. Easily one of the best artists MTG has ever had.
Roman Guzman (1 year ago)
May you do Clint Cearley next? Great and high quality video as always!
Daiyz (1 year ago)
Consider this a request for a Richard Kane Ferguson video.
MyJokesArgon (1 year ago)
Hey Sam! I've been watching your art videos quite a bit, and I'd like to suggest Svetlin Velinov for an artistic study.

Can I just say that this is without a doubt the best Magic:The Gathering channel on YouTube! The eye to detail on every aspect of the game is incredible, going to check out the Patreon page for sure! Keep it up! :D
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
I'm glad you're enjoying. thank you for the kind words.
Affinity for MTG (1 year ago)
I love Raymond's bristling, pointy style. Great video!
Shangheliee (1 year ago)
this guy has the best art
Herbert Jackson (1 year ago)
Awesome! I loved it! I happen to collect every single one of his cards in Magic. Missing a few foils still, unfortunately.
Herbert Jackson (1 year ago)
No, that was not me, but coincidentally a friend asked me the same thing a while ago. He came across the same thread on reddit, haha.
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
no kidding. did you post your collection on reddit a while back, by chance? I found a thread while researching this video about someone who was doing the same thing.
Connor Vana (1 year ago)
Loved the format
John Raynor Moore (1 year ago)
My favorites are his calmer blacks oddly enough... and colorless. Ugin and wurmcoil look great, but vampiric tutor and Rescue From the Underworld are great pieces
Liam Childs (1 year ago)
Loved the episode! Would it be possible to do the quiz that you had in some of the previous videos? I really liked that in the past as a way to test myself
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
I've moved away from that format, as I think it takes away from the momentum and pacing of this new style. I still would love to employ quizzes as content somewhere, but have to find a good fit for them.
Jesper Thomsen (1 year ago)
As impressed I am by Raymond's art, I am by your work done makings these video, Sam. I'm a huge fan. (y)
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
thank you man!
Rich Williams (1 year ago)
Nice stuff, Wurmcoil Engine is iconic. I've always liked Donato Giancola's work myself.
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
Donato is the best artist in Magic, bar none.
Solomon Somers (1 year ago)
Wow, I didn't know anything about Raymond as an artist, but some of those cards are some of my favorite for card art. Something about the jagged edges and dynamic, motion-like images get me excited. I mean genuinely excited. His art makes me pause for a second just to take it in. Thank you very much for making these videos. They have been pointing out the artistic side of one of my favorite games. Also, my suggestion for a video would be on Rebecca Guay. I LOVE her style, and would love to see your thoughts on her
Glen North (1 year ago)
The passion you have for art and your appreciation of these artists and their work is evident in all of your videos. I always enjoy them! I hope to see you do a video of RK Post someday :D
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
thank you for commenting on so many of my videos. I appreciate you reaching out so much.
Adam Finke (1 year ago)
Alex Grey, the artist for Tool!? I had never expected to find a connection to my favorite card game and one of my favorite bands

Please do one about Terese Nielson next!
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)

I now can't unsee the dutch angle. Also the Despise promo is one of my favorite Magic art pieces. Is there anyplace I can find a Hi res image of it? Does he sell prints? Great vid!
Rhystic Studies (1 year ago)
not sure about prints, but I also really dig the Despise piece quite a bit.
YomYestreen (1 year ago)
"Fear and Loathing in GP Vegas" Not going to lie, I would watch that movie.
