7270 ratings | 634024 views
In this episode we show you how to sharpen your knife like a razor. The grinds we discuss in this video are 'convex'' and 'scandi-vex'. We show you all the stones and the right technique for the right knife. At 2:32 you can clearly see the technique that creates the convex. If you have any questions, ask us in the comments! What’s wrong with v edges???????
marmooki james (3 months ago)
Dutch Bushcraft Knives holy shit I can’t believe you replied I love your channel
Dutch Bushcraft Knives (3 months ago)
V edges have a lot of friction with whatever you are cutting because of the hard corners / shoulders. A Secondary convex of any other edge without a Secondary v edge will cut much cleaner

The Pope Nutz Hang them up by a string so they only touch the air. Make sure there’s no wind draft in the room so they don’t get dull over time (6.000.000 years).

Osman Ali (6 months ago)
why do you hate V edges ?
Dutch Bushcraft Knives (6 months ago)
They cause a lot of friction with whatever you are cutting making them less comfortable to work with. A Secondary convex for example offers around the same strength without compromising the cutting capabilities

Quick question I can't seem to get answered, when the compound on the strop is full of metal, should you later more on or is there a technique to remove the compound I am unaware of?
Dutch Bushcraft Knives (8 months ago)
Don't worry to much about it. Just put new compound in top of it. Maybe once a year you can clean the strop by rubbing a sharp spine of a kitchen knife over the strop to get off all the compound and rough up the leather a bit

Can you do a bigger knife like a hunting one please

Sean (9 months ago)
Doesn‘t the convex grind get flat again if you sharpen it with a flat hard stone?
Sean (9 months ago)
Dutch Bushcraft Knives okay thanks
Dutch Bushcraft Knives (9 months ago)
The natural motion of your hands will make the convex. As long as you don't try too hard keeping the exact same angle it will always end up as a convex as your hand makes the angle of the bevel fluctuate

I got a smiths sharpening stone from my local store not so long ago, and just today I figured out that I could use it to sharpen my knives to the point where they can cut through spacetime. It’s a fine stone, it’s yellow in color and it has a little case on it. It works awesome in the field paired with my leather belt, I can strop without compound and make an even sharper knife. I got my mora back to factory sharpness with it (the chips in the blade just give it the character that makes it mine). But yeah, check it out. You’ll get good sharpness off of it. Now I just have to find a way to sharpen my axe.
Adrian McClyde (10 months ago)
wtf did i just watch?
Wesley Werneking (11 months ago)
Awesome video guys, I just created an account at DBKshop.com and will be placing an order for the new strop and diamond spray. Question for you, if you only had one stone for both outdoor and kitchen knives, what grit would it be? If you could have two stones, which would you have? This is assuming that you do also have a strop. Thanks guys!

Niko Mankinen (11 months ago)
How many degrees? In celsius pls
Dutch Bushcraft Knives (11 months ago)
For convex don’t worry too much about the angle. We normally sharpen between 18-25 degrees depending ob the knife and steel but dont focus too much on that it’s just not neccessary.
Kyle Hickey (11 months ago)
I’ve never seen anyone teach me the angle I need to use. Help.
Dutch Bushcraft Knives (11 months ago)
Don’t focus on exact angles it’s not needed. Depending on your intended use and the type of steel anywehre between 18-25c per side should be good

Hey guys, i am no 'newbie' when it comes to knives, i have a small collection but i NEVER sharpened any knife myself. I would like to know how to the grit on sharpening stones affects the sharpening progress.. Awesome videos you make !
Frederick Steinmann (1 year ago)
Thanks a lot gods !
These are some general rules 400 grit: grinding 1000 grit: sharpening 3000 grit is polishing. You generally start with 1000 if you have a dull knife and go to 3000 after that. Finish with a leather strop to remove any burr and you'll have a shaving edge. You start with the 400 stone if you have a damaged edge. You can even go higher or start lower but these 3 stones are most important in my opinion.

that's a nice video mate, fun ways of showing how to sharpen knife.. I got questions on sharpening though what to do if my knife is chipped? Can I use sharpening stone fix it? And also my knife is neither convex nor scandi-vex grind.. I think it's sabre grind/compound because it has a secondary micro bevel on the edges..
Joshua Heartnet (1 year ago)
well 3 years isn't that ancient mate haha.. I have only started to try sharpening now, and I'm still waiting to get my sharpening stone delivered.. I see so you really take it to the lowest grit to get rid of the chip. thanks for the pointer mate
Hey Joshua, I have an ancient video on that haha! you might like it to asnwer your question https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmMUgvGKwuo As for your grind. Don't worry too much about names. If you tell people you have a scandi with a secondary bevel everyone will understand.

TheMrWillje (1 year ago)
I've always used the sandpaper at ripping technique and it's always worked. Never rounded the edge.
TheMrWillje (1 year ago)
Dutch Bushcraft Knives I can definitely see that. I've seen people who use that method and, when stropping, and up with the knife at 45° at the end of the stroke. No wonder that can't get their knives sharp. I've been maintaining a bark river with sandpaper, and it's sharper than the day I got it, and it keeps that way for a long time! 4V is an amazing steel. You should get a Bark River Kephart 5 in 4V. Amazing knife.
It can definitely work but you have to know what you're doing. A lot of people will just ruin their edge

That's the first time I've seen a you tube video where the guy made a decent feather stick. Cool.
thanks a lot!
Dreamhawke (1 year ago)
So do you actually lift the spine up and down a bit intentionally on convex?
intentionally unintentionally haha. You just need to be a little sloppy by loosening up your wrists. The montion of going up and down will come naturally.

Wow thank you, keep up the great work guys! :=) -Greetings from Norway :D
If burr starts to build up on the other side it’s time to flip. Keep flipping it a few times untill the scratch pattern becomes even
